Simulation Of An Ethylene Flame With Turbulence, Soot And Radiation Modeling, Santu Golder Jan 2018

Simulation Of An Ethylene Flame With Turbulence, Soot And Radiation Modeling, Santu Golder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will investigate soot models that are available in commercial codes. We will look at the effect of turbulence models, gravity, soot models and radiation. Simulations will be compared to Coppalle and Joyeux [1]. The flame is an ethylene air diffusion flame at a Reynolds number of 5700. Simulations show the SST turbulence model, one-step soot model and Rosseland radiation model including gravity agree well with experimental data (temperature and soot). Flamelet soot modeling from Carbonell et al. [2] and flamelet radiation modeling from Doom [3] has been incorporated and compared as well.

A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao Nov 2017

A Multi-Scale Approach For Modeling Shock Ignition And Burn Of Granular Hmx, Pratap Thamanna Rao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) in confined, low-density granular HMX (65%-85% Theoretical Maximum Density, TMD) occurs by a complex mechanism that involves compaction shock interactions within the material. Piston driven DDT experiments indicate that detonation is abruptly triggered by the interaction of a strong burn-supported secondary shock and a piston-supported primary (input) shock, where the nature of the interaction depends on initial packing density and primary shock strength. These interactions influence transition by affecting hot-spot formation within the micro-structure during pore collapse. In this study, meso-scale simulations of hot-spot formation in shock loaded granular HMX are used to guide the development of …

Application Of A Multi-Zone Model For The Prediction Of Species Concentrations In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, David Wilson Apr 2016

Application Of A Multi-Zone Model For The Prediction Of Species Concentrations In Rapid Compression Machine Experiments, David Wilson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Accurate chemical kinetic models, which predict species evolution and heat release rates in chemically reactive systems, are essential for further advancements in fuel and combustion technology. An experimental facility that is widely used for evaluating the accuracy of kinetic models is a rapid compression machine (RCM), which creates a well-defined reaction environment by compressing a reactive mixture inside a chamber. Generally, RCM experiments are conducted in order to obtain ignition delay data. However, chemical speciation data provides greater insight into reaction pathways, and is therefore a more rigorous benchmark for validating kinetic models. In order for a chemical kinetic model …

Economical Retrofit System To Reduce Cooking Emissions In Third World Dwellings, Jonathan Vanzummeren, Tyler Sturgeon, Ben Dalessandro

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Abstract:

The purpose of this document is to propose and demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of substituting an open flame biomass cooking process with a closed system with the capabilities of sustaining an adequate fire. Clay ovens or “chulhas” are the traditional piece of cooking equipment used in poorer areas of the world. They are often built inside cramped one-room housing units with little or no ventilation. The emissions released from burning fuel sources such as wood, coal, or animal waste bring with them detrimental and often fatal health problems and results in approximately 1.3 million deaths per year.

High Pressure Combustion And Supersonic Jet Ignition For H2/Air, Michael G. Woodworth, Sayan Biswas, Li Qiao Aug 2015

High Pressure Combustion And Supersonic Jet Ignition For H2/Air, Michael G. Woodworth, Sayan Biswas, Li Qiao

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There are many incentives to increase the fuel efficiency of combustion processes. This paper looks at two available options to achieve this goal. The former aims to develop an experimental method that can analyze combustion at extremely high pressures to improve the understanding of high pressure H2/air combustion. Experimental data has been lacking a suitable combustion diagnostic to visualize high pressure combustion processes, making it difficult to improve the process. Improvement of x-ray diffraction tomography in a windowless combustor makes it possible to see flame propagation at high pressure. The procedure and chamber are still in the design phase, yet …

In this research, La0.7Sr0.3Fe0.7Ga0.3O3−δ (LSFG) perovskite oxide was successfully prepared using a microwave-assisted combustion method, and employed as both anode and cathode in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells. A maximum power density of 489 mW cm−2 was achieved at 800 °C with wet H2 as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant in a single cell with the configuration LSFG|La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O3−δ|LSFG. Furthermore, the cells demonstrated good stability in H2 and acceptable sulfur tolerance.

Incorporating Dynamic Flame Behavior Into The Scaling Laws Of Wildland Fire Spread, Brittany A. Adam Jan 2015

Incorporating Dynamic Flame Behavior Into The Scaling Laws Of Wildland Fire Spread, Brittany A. Adam

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A challenge for fire researchers is obtaining data from those fires that are most dangerous and costly. While it is feasible to instrument test beds, test plots, and small prescribed burns for research, it is uncommon to successfully instrument an active wildland fire. With a focus on very specific facets of wildland fire, researchers have created many unique models utilizing matchsticks, cardboard, liquid fuel, excelsior, plywood, live fuels, dead fuels, and wood cribs of different packing densities. Such scale models, however, only serve as valid substitutes for the full-scale system when all functional relations of the scale model are made …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of The Effects Of Water Injection In A Diesel Engine, Rabun Z. Wallace Jan 2015

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of The Effects Of Water Injection In A Diesel Engine, Rabun Z. Wallace

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Water injection has been used in internal combustion engines for many years. It has been used to cool combustion temperatures, reduce emissions, and in some instances clean carbon buildup from the cylinder. Research has shown that the water to fuel mass ratio is most effective between 20-30%, so the upper and lower limit were used for simulations in Converge CFD. To validate the CFD model, a case without water injection was compared to experimental data from Sandia National Laboratory. The predicted in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate showed good agreement with the experimental data. Cases were run with the injection …

An Optical Analysis Of The Blowoff Behavior For Bluff Body-Stabilized Flames In Vitiated Flow, Trevor Jensen Aug 2011

An Optical Analysis Of The Blowoff Behavior For Bluff Body-Stabilized Flames In Vitiated Flow, Trevor Jensen

Master's Theses

In bluff body-stabilized flames, a variety of physical phenomena contribute to the flame destabilization as lean blowoff is approached. These effects include increased strain on the flame shear layers, decreased attenuation of Bénard-von Kármán vortex shedding, and the presence of thermoacoustic instabilities. Lean, bluff body-stabilized flames were studied in an enclosed rectangular-duct, turbulent combustion rig with a triangular flame holder under vitiated conditions with both symmetric and asymmetric fuel distributions. Air and fuel flows within the rig were characterized using a PIV system and a continuous emissions gas analyzer, respectively.

High-speed videos of these flames undergoing blowoff were taken to …

Numerical Investigation Of Cavity-Vane Interactions Within The Ultra Compact Combustor, Jonathan F. Anisko Mar 2006

Numerical Investigation Of Cavity-Vane Interactions Within The Ultra Compact Combustor, Jonathan F. Anisko

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical analysis and design optimization of the Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) has been conducted. The UCC is a combustor designed to incorporate high-g loadings to increase flame propagation speed while reducing flame length, thereby helping to significantly reduce the size of a combustor. A commercial CFD package with a k-Ⲉ turbulence model has been used to develop design rules for the construction of future UCCs. There have been several versions of UCC that have been designed, built and tested by AFRL/PRTC. Since real experimental tests are expensive and construction time is prohibitive to test many different design configurations, CFD …

Numerical Study Of Combustion Of Hydrogen And Ethylene In A Two-Dimensional Dual-Mode Scramjet Combustor, Robert A. Carson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents computational fluid dynamics results for two-dimensional flow geometries utilizing two fuels, hydrogen (H2) and ethylene (C2H4). Upstream interaction was evident with the use of both fuels due in part to recirculation in the combustor, the inlet pressures and the combustion process. Results were obtained for hydrogen using a reduced chemical kinetic model while results obtained for ethylene employed a reduced chemical kinetic model as well as an expanded chemical kinetic model.

Initially, an examination of grid composition was conducted in order to select the most numerically efficient and accurate grid for reacting flow in the current combustor …

Radiative Interactions In Thermochemical Nonequilibrium Expanding Flows, Srikanth B. Pidugu Jan 2001

Radiative Interactions In Thermochemical Nonequilibrium Expanding Flows, Srikanth B. Pidugu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A numerical study is conducted to investigate radiative interactions in flows with thermal and chemical nonequilibrium. The two dimensional spatially elliptic Navier-Stokes equations have been used to numerically investigate different physical processes in the nozzle flow problem. The system of governing equations are solved using explicit, unsplit MacCormack predictor-corrector scheme. The chemistry source term is treated implicitly to alleviate stiffness associated with fast chemical reactions.

Different physical processes considered in this study are investigated in a systematic manner. Finite chemical processes in chemically reacting supersonic nozzle flows are studied. Five hydrogen-air combustion models have been employed to study the influence …

Studies On Nonequilibrium Phenomena In Supersonic Chemically Reacting Flows, Rajnish Chandrasekhar Jul 1993

Studies On Nonequilibrium Phenomena In Supersonic Chemically Reacting Flows, Rajnish Chandrasekhar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study deals with a systematic investigation of nonequilibrium processes in supersonic combustion. The two-dimensional, elliptic Navier-Stokes equations are used to investigate supersonic flows with nonequilibrium chemistry and thermodynamics, coupled with radiation, for hydrogen-air systems. The explicit, unsplit MacCormack finite-difference scheme is used to advance the governing equations in time, until convergence is achieved.

For a basic understanding of the flow physics, premixed flows undergoing finite rate chemical reactions are investigated. Results obtained for specific conditions indicate that the radiative interactions vary substantially, depending on reactions involving HO$\sb2$ and NO species, and that this can have a noticeable influence on …

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Kerosene Cook Stoves, Edna B. Snyder Nov 1932

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Kerosene Cook Stoves, Edna B. Snyder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The purpose of this investigation was to learn the effect of constructional details of the burner and the framework on the performance of kerosene stoves. Six stoves were used, four of the long-chimney type and two of the short-chimney type. Of the long-chimney burners, three were from the same manufacturer; the fourth was similar in appearance, but differed in performance. Of the short chimneys one burner used a wick, the other a lighting ring. The effect of: (1) draft variations and constructional details and (2) the framework on the heating time and thermal efficiency of stoves was studied.
