Assembly Of Ceramic Particles In Aqueous Suspensions Induced By High-Frequency Ac Electric Field, James E. John Iv
Assembly Of Ceramic Particles In Aqueous Suspensions Induced By High-Frequency Ac Electric Field, James E. John Iv
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Ceramic materials processed using colloidal methods have been the focus of a great deal of research aimed at tailoring the final structure and microstructure of the finished ceramic sample. To this end, various external field effects have been investigated to modify the suspension microstructure without manipulating the ceramic particles directly. In a previous work in the field of ice templating it has been shown that AC electric fields are able to produce microstructural changes in ice templated ceramics that have significantly improved the final mechanical properties. However, the mechanisms for this process are still not well understood in ceramics.

Modeling, Identification, Validation And Control Of A Hybrid Maglev Ball System, Ahmed Elhussein E. Mekky
Modeling, Identification, Validation And Control Of A Hybrid Maglev Ball System, Ahmed Elhussein E. Mekky
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, the electrodynamics of a single axis hybrid electromagnetic suspension Maglev system was modeled and validated by applying it to a single axis hybrid maglev ball experiment. By exploring its linearized model, it was shown that the single axis hybrid Maglev ball has inherently unstable dynamics. Three control scenarios were explored based on the linearized model; (1) Proportional, Deferential (PD) control, (2) Proportional, Deferential, Integral (PID) and (3) PID controller with pre-filtering. This thesis has shown that a PID controller with a pre-filtering technique can stabilize such a system and provide a well-controlled response.

Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge
Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Vehicle-guideway interaction studies of Magnetically Levitated (Maglev) vehicles indicate that structural flexibility can adversely affect the overall stability and performance of such systems. This is one of the reasons why guideways are generally made very rigid. This in turn leads to increased cost of the overall system since guideway construction forms a significant portion of the overall cost. In this dissertation, the influence of structural flexibility on the stability of Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) Maglev systems is studied. It is shown how inherently unstable and flexible structure EMS Maglev systems can achieve guaranteed stability by using collocated actuators and sensors, along …
Advanced Design And Performance Characterization Of A Micromachined Tuning-Fork Gyroscope With High Quality Factors, Shiva Krishna Durgam
Advanced Design And Performance Characterization Of A Micromachined Tuning-Fork Gyroscope With High Quality Factors, Shiva Krishna Durgam
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Over the past two decades, micromachined gyroscopes fabricated using MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) technology have attracted a great deal of attention from various industrial and military sectors due to their significant advantages over traditional bulky gyroscopes, including small size, batch fabrication, low power consumption, and low cost. Among the various micromachined gyroscopes developed so far, tuning-fork gyroscopes with integrated electrostatic transducers have been extremely attractive because of their significant advantages over other structural forms and other types of transducers., including larger proof mass, large vibration amplitude in the drive-mode, and relative ease of fabrication.

Development And Validation Of A Dynamic Model Of The Maglev Transportation System At Old Dominion University, Ajinkya V. Deodhar
Development And Validation Of A Dynamic Model Of The Maglev Transportation System At Old Dominion University, Ajinkya V. Deodhar
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A dynamic model for the vehicle-guideway coupled with a controller is developed using dynamic modelling software, MADYMO. The fundamental characteristics of the vehicle are obtained from detailed FE analysis in NASTRAN. The vehicle is then converted into a 21-degree-of-freedom rigid body system with 12 FE magnets. A two span concrete guideway of 54 meters in length is modelled using 3D solid Hex8 elements. The air gap is modelled as a penetration of the magnets in the guideway. The PD controller aims at achieving constant penetration (i.e. the air gap) of all magnets in the guideway, throughout the simulation. This PD …
