Broadening The Capability Of Kinetics Analysis In Biomechanics, Nicholas Nelson
Broadening The Capability Of Kinetics Analysis In Biomechanics, Nicholas Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two studies are discussed in this manuscript each preceded by a literature review of the topic. The first review and study explore agility movements and the effect that alternative upper designs in shoes might have on ground reaction force measures of performance. The second review and study evaluate methods of predicting ground reaction forces without the use of a force platform. A method of using effective forces and ways of improving its accuracy are evaluated in depth.
The Effects And Analysis Of Implant Type And Surgical Approach In Total Hip Arthroplasty Dislocation Resistance, Brittany Marshall
The Effects And Analysis Of Implant Type And Surgical Approach In Total Hip Arthroplasty Dislocation Resistance, Brittany Marshall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most successful orthopaedic surgeries performed, in which the hip joint is reconstructed to decrease pain and to improve the functionality to the joint. Although these surgeries are very successful, there still remain areas for improvement, such as failures due to instability and dislocation of the implanted joint. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effect of surgical entrance approach on dislocation, the effect of implant type, and the effect of capsule repair and closure. The need to quantify the resistance to dislocation is important in understanding the effect that each …
In Vivo Data Capture Using Hssr For Calibration Of Computational Models, Thor Erik Andreassen
In Vivo Data Capture Using Hssr For Calibration Of Computational Models, Thor Erik Andreassen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Computational modeling is a vital tool for understanding and evaluating healthy and unhealthy function of the musculoskeletal aspects of the human body. However, the accuracy of the musculoskeletal models depends significantly on the accuracy of the input data used to calibrate various behavioral parameters of the model. To date, most computational models have been built using generic in vitro data, mostly because of a lack of accurate and meaningful datasets from in vivo testing. The next major step in computational modeling is to create subject-specific computational models using calibration data taken from in vivo testing. The overall goal was to …
Effects On Initial Fixation Of Cementless Tibial Trays In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Brooke Fritts Thompson
Effects On Initial Fixation Of Cementless Tibial Trays In Total Knee Arthroplasty, Brooke Fritts Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bone mineral density (BMD), among other factors, largely effect the initial stability of the cementless tibial tray component in a total knee replacement (TKR), where increased motion at the tray-bone interface hinders bony ingrowth. With a lack of bony ingrowth, the cementless implant will not experience long-term success. Understanding which factors influence initial stability yields insight into surgical technique considerations and help inform a surgeon’s implant choice. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors influencing the initial stability of cementless tibial trays using a 6-degree of freedom (6-DOF) robotic joint simulator, the AMTI VIVO, and combined loading scenarios …
Side-To-Side Comparison Of Total Shoulder Arthroplasty And Intact Function In Individuals, Sarah Rose Walden
Side-To-Side Comparison Of Total Shoulder Arthroplasty And Intact Function In Individuals, Sarah Rose Walden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) is a surgery which replaces the shoulder joint, or the interface between the humerus and the scapula glenoid. To test TSA success, most prior research compares patients with TSA to healthy controls. However, the shoulder anthropometry, motion, and musculature of individuals varies widely across the population making it important to assess TSA performance in individuals. The overall goal of this study is to determine if patients with one of two TSA implant designs on one side achieve the same range of motion as their intact side, and if so to find if they compensate using increased …
Finite Element And Probabilistic Analysis Of Soft Tissue Structures Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Dana Joseph Coombs
Finite Element And Probabilistic Analysis Of Soft Tissue Structures Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Dana Joseph Coombs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human lumbar spine mechanics are influenced by soft tissue structures. Understanding and properly modeling these structures can help determine pathology, treatment, and implant design and performance. Finite element models of the L4-L5 level of the lumbar spine are often used, which include a representation of the intervertebral disc and spinal ligaments. Validation of these models are typically based on torque rotation data from a single subject or the models use average properties reported in literature. However, experimental testing reports variation up to 40% in ligament stiffness and even greater variability for annulus fibrosis properties. Probabilistic approaches enable consideration of the …
Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger
Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The natural knee is a hinge joint with significant functional requirements during activities of daily living; as a result, acute and chronic injuries can occur. Pathologies are influenced by joint anatomy and may include patellar maltracking, cartilage degeneration (e.g. osteoarthritis), or acute injuries such as meniscal or ligamentous tears. Population variability makes broadly applicable conclusions about etiology of these conditions from small-scale investigations challenging. The work presented in this dissertation is a demonstration of statistical modeling approaches to evaluate population variability in anatomy of the knee and function of its tibiofemoral (TF) and patellofemoral (PF) joints. Three-dimensional (3D) computational models …
Probabilistic Musculoskeletal Simulation Methods To Address Intersegmental Dependencies Of The Knee, Hip, And Spine, Casey A. Myers
Probabilistic Musculoskeletal Simulation Methods To Address Intersegmental Dependencies Of The Knee, Hip, And Spine, Casey A. Myers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Orthropaedic clinical practice in the area of the knee, hip, and spine has benefited from the concept of regional interdependence, where interventions applied to one region can influence the outcome and function of other regions of the body that may be seemingly unrelated to the applied intervention. An understanding of the biomechanical mechanisms that describe clinical practice involving knee, hip, and spine regional interdependence can improve treatment of a wide range of pathological conditions. Improvement in this area can be particularly impactful on the outcomes of patients with total joint replacement, where pathology and compensatory strategies develop during multi-joint interactions. …
Evaluation Of Novel High-Density Emg Feedback Parameters On The Spatial Distribution Of Trapezius Muscle Activity, Brecca M. Gaffney
Evaluation Of Novel High-Density Emg Feedback Parameters On The Spatial Distribution Of Trapezius Muscle Activity, Brecca M. Gaffney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Each year, 17.9% of adults working in a computer-dominated work environment develop an episode of chronic neck and shoulder pain. An effective treatment method for chronic pain is postural correction through therapist. The understanding of the relation between cervicoscapular posture and trapezius muscle activity is not fully understood because the anatomy of the scapula is not accessible for direct observation. Until recently, the spatial distribution of trapezius muscle activity could not be measured due to the limitation in size of detection zone in traditional bipolar electrodes. The primary goal of postural correction when treating cases of chronic neck and shoulder …
Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom
Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic proteins are used to successfully treat hemophilia, Crohn's Disease, diabetes, and cancer. Recent product recalls have occurred because of sub-visible particle formation resulting from the inherent instability of proteins. It has been suggested that particle formation is associated with late stage processing steps of filling, shipping, and delivery. Previous work at the University of Denver demonstrated that fluid cavitation can generate a large number of sub-visible protein particles in ultra clean formulations, but that mitigation can be achieved with fluid property manipulation. The goal of this research was to (1) assess the risk of cavitation under common pharmaceutical manufacturing …
