Effect Of Aggregation And Particle Size On The Thermal Conductivity Of Nickel-Epoxy Nanocomposites, Jacob M. Faulkner, Xiangyu Li, Xiulin Ruan Dr.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Microprocessor advancements have been stunted in recent years by inadequate means of heat dissipation as power continues to grow and size continues to shrink. One way to increase thermal conductivity while maintaining electrical insulation is to add metal nanoparticles to a polymer matrix. This cheap material has become a popular thermal interface for this reason. However, optimization of the interface is dependent upon a number of factors including particle size, shape, orientation, and aggregation. Various theoretical models and numerical approximations have been developed to find the effective thermal conductivity of such nanocomposites, but none has been able to fully incorporate …

Atomistic And Mesoscopic Simulations Of Heat Transfer Across Heterogeneous Material Interfaces, Sridhar Sadasivam

Open Access Dissertations

The study of heat transfer and the associated thermal interface resistance at heterogeneous material interfaces is over 70 years old since the first measurements of thermal interface resistance by Kapitza in 1941. However, recent developments in experimental metrology techniques that enable spectrally-resolved phonon transport measurements at the nanoscale along with the development of high-fidelity simulation methods have provided a renewed interest in the fundamental physics of heat transfer across interfaces. Miniaturized electronic devices and nanostructured materials for energy applications are among technologies that would benefit from a fundamental understanding of interfacial thermal transport. This dissertation focuses on the study of …

The Design, Fabrication, And Validation Of A Film Cooled Rotating Turbine Cascade With An Actively Cooled Shroud In A Closed Loop Wind Tunnel, Christopher Michael Drewes

LSU Master's Theses

To test shroud and blade cooling effectiveness, a closed loop, heated wind tunnel housing a film cooled rotating turbine cascade with prescribed blade and vane geometry surrounded by a fully cooled shroud with a leading edge gap were designed and assembled on Louisiana State University’s campus. Heat transfer coefficients and film cooling effectiveness results were computed using a 1-D semi-infinite solid conduction analysis of material temperatures obtained with liquid crystal thermography. Proper analysis required a step change in air temperature; so a bypass loop provided mainstream air heating while maintaining the shroud and blades at ambient temperature. Also, analysis required …

Simulation And Validation Of Radio Frequency Heating Of Shell Eggs, Soon Kiat Lau

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Finite element models were developed with the purpose of finding an optimal radio frequency (RF) heating setup for pasteurizing shell eggs. Material properties of the yolk, albumen, and shell were measured and fitted into equations that were used as inputs for the model. When the egg was heated by itself, heating tend to be focused at the air cell to result in a “coagulation ring.” The focused heating near the air cell of the egg prevented satisfactory pasteurization of the egg, but deeper analysis of the simulation results offered a new perspective on how non-uniform RF heating could occur in …

An Analytical Model For Heat Transfer Through A Thermoelectric Device Used In Waste Heat Recovery, Zachary Smith, Dr. Matthew Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A considerable amount of energy that is produced in a typical power generation process is rejected to the environment as low-grade waste heat. This heat is rejected at a temperature that is difficult to efficiently convert into electricity. One promising method of recovering this waste heat is through the use of thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that operate by means of the Seebeck effect. Effort has previously been placed in predicting the power output of TEGs. With knowledge of the temperature differential across a thermoelectric device and the properties of the electrical components the device is connected to, the electrical power output …

Flame Jet Impingement Heat Transfer, Todd Moss, Dr. Brent Webb Sep 2013

Flame Jet Impingement Heat Transfer, Todd Moss, Dr. Brent Webb

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Impinging flame jets are used widely in industry and manufacturing because of their high heat transport characteristics and tight spatial control of the heating. The technique is used in heating or re-heating of stock in the metals and glass industries, and in welding and soldering operations. However, these impinging flame jets are not well understood, and few studies reporting local and average heat transfer characteristics exist in the open literature which might be used by designers (Baukal and Gebhart, 1995a, 199b). The purpose of this research is to experimentally characterize and correlate the local and average heat transfer behavior of …

Thermal Transport To Sessile Water Droplets On Heated Superhydrophobic Surfaces Of Varying Cavity Fraction, Robb C. Hays Aug 2013

Thermal Transport To Sessile Water Droplets On Heated Superhydrophobic Surfaces Of Varying Cavity Fraction, Robb C. Hays

Theses and Dissertations

The hydrophobicity of a surface is defined as the degree to which it repels water molecules, and the internal contact angle that the droplet makes with the surface is a measure of the hydrophobicity. Contact angles less than 90° occur on hydrophilic surfaces, while contact angles greater than 90° occur on hydrophobic surfaces. If a surface's contact angle is greater than 120° the surface is commonly defined as superhydrophobic (SH). Superhydrophobicity is accomplished through a combination of microscale surface roughness and water repellant surface chemistry. The roughness creates cavities, or pockets, of vapor underneath the droplet which act to increase …
