Design And Development Of A Resonance Ignition System Using Gaseous Propellants, Benjamin J. Hoefer
Design And Development Of A Resonance Ignition System Using Gaseous Propellants, Benjamin J. Hoefer
Master's Theses
This work presents the development and experimental evaluation of a resonance igniter (RI) operating with premixed gaseous propellants. Resonance ignition is a non-electrical ignition concept in which an underexpanded jet impinges on a closed-end Hartmann–Sprenger tube (HST), generating cyclic compression and expansion waves that rapidly heat gas near the tube endwall. A modular experimental system was designed and built to investigate resonance ignition using methane–air and methane–oxygen mixtures. The system includes a supplemental configuration that may probe for mixture conditions favorable to ignition, informing RI testing. Pressure and temperature measurements were used to characterize pressure control, mixture pressure ratio (MPR), …

Honors College Theses
A comprehensive analysis was conducted to research the viability of Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and S8 Synthetic Kerosene fuels as a drop-in replacement for conventional petroleum-based fuels, Jet-A and ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel). Global transportation remains heavily dependent on liquid fossil fuels, while renewable aerospace fuels offer a promising pathway to reducing life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. However, the combustion performance and long-term feasibility of these fuels remain insufficiently characterized. This study performed a thorough assessment of each fuel's thermophysical and combustion properties. Thermophysical characterization encompassed viscosity, freezing point, energy density, spray atomization, and volatility. …
Development Of A Mixing-Controlled Combustion Model For 0d Engine Modeling: Using High-Order Models To Guide The Formulation Of Reduced-Order Models, James Gohn
All Dissertations
Vehicles are becoming increasingly complex to comply with the increasingly stringent regulations placed on all market sectors while still maintaining performance requirements. This increased complexity leads to increases in the cost and time it takes to develop and produce these next generation vehicles. To meet demand therefore, it becomes necessary to evaluate numerous design iterations using computer models. There are multiple levels of models that may be necessary for different purposes or use cases. All levels of modeling for virtual prototyping, however, require a level of validation and predictive ability to be useful. To this end, the following thesis presents …

Experimental And Numerical Study On The Stability Limits Of Ammonia And Ammonia/Hydrogen Flames Inside A Toroidal Jet-Stirred Reactor, Guillermo Alberto Barrios Cadenas
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Ammonia’s (NH3) properties as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier, its phase characteristics, and its wide global infrastructure present a solid case as a potential surrogate for carbon-based aviation fuels. Delivering a zero-emission NH3-based engine requires careful integration and optimization of the combustor and thermal management systems, a process that requires high-fidelity chemical reacting models experimentally validated through the use of simplified combustors. This study investigates NH3 fundamental combustion characteristics at conditions relevant to aviation gas turbines using a newly constructed toroidal jet-stirred reactor (TJSR) facility. Lean blow-off (LBO) experiments were carried out for NH3 blends …
Enhanced Atomization And Combustion In Subsonic Ljic Systems Using Ultrasonically Driven Solid Obstructions, Daniel Sebastian Cruz
Enhanced Atomization And Combustion In Subsonic Ljic Systems Using Ultrasonically Driven Solid Obstructions, Daniel Sebastian Cruz
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The liquid fueling methods used in aircraft propulsion have undergone extensive optimization, with Liquid Jets in Crossflow (LJIC) emerging as a simple yet effective injection scheme. LJIC enables sufficient fuel mass flow rates and penetration for high-speed operation, however fuel trajectory and droplet size remain highly sensitive to crossflow conditions. As a result, wide flight envelopes introduce variability in atomization, leading to unsteady combustion performance. Recent work has incorporated a pintile, a solid obstruction placed in the path of the fuel jet, to redistribute momentum and reduce trajectory variability across varying flow conditions. While this approach improves trajectory uniformity, it …

Shock Tube Speciation Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Relevant To Solid Fuel Combustion, Diego N. Ruiz Pena
Shock Tube Speciation Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Relevant To Solid Fuel Combustion, Diego N. Ruiz Pena
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Solid Fuel Ramjets (SFRJs) are often used in tactical applications due to their simplicity, robustness, and reliability. No moving parts, atmospheric oxidizer usage, and scalable fuel grain designs make them a great solution for compact, high-speed air-breathing propulsion systems. SFRJs operate by compressing incoming air through a fixed geometry inlet and directing it over a regressing solid fuel surface, where pyrolysis gases are released and transported downstream to the combustion chamber where thrust is generated. Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a commonly used fuel binder in SFRJ systems due to its high energy density, stable combustion behavior, and ease of processing. …
Opposed-Piston Two Stroke Engine As A High Power Density Solution In Heavy Duty Applications: An Experimental Evaluation With Diesel And Ethanol, Ankur Bhatt
All Dissertations
With an increasing demand to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the conventional powertrain technology is at a saturation point. There is reinvigorated research interest in alternative powertrain designs that offer potentially higher efficiencies and lower engine-out emissions compared to conventional powertrains. The opposed piston two-stroke (OP2S) engine is one such alternative engine architecture that has demonstrated a reduction in engine-out emissions and increased efficiency compared to conventional four-stroke diesel engines. Like any two-stroke engine, the scavenging process and the composition of the internal residuals are predominantly governed by the pressure differential between the intake and the exhaust ports. Without dedicated …

Mid-Wave Infrared Imaging Of Supersonic Combustor Exhaust Flow, Nathan Childs
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
A study was completed on the application of mid-wave infrared (MW-IR) imaging for diagnostics in supersonic combustion exhaust flows, with the objective of enhancing optical access and measurement accuracy. Other optical based techniques of thermography require complicated setups and analysis to determine the temperature of a flow with high accuracy, where MW-IR is a more simplistic "point and shoot" technique. The simplicity of MW-IR comes with the trade off of gaining simplicity but adding uncertainty into the measurements. The MW-IR camera was positioned to view the exhaust of the combustor to provide an unobstructed view of the flow, addressing limitations …

Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman
Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Increasingly stringent emissions regulations have motivated the exploration of ways to decarbonize the internal combustion engine (ICE). Alternative fuels are of interest as they can easily be implemented with existing infrastructure. Among these alternative fuels, natural gas stands out due to its large abundance and high hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, which can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Due to its low reactivity, most natural gas engines today are premixed lean burn spark ignited (SI) engines. These engines produce criteria pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO), but due to their premixed nature, also produce relatively large amounts of unburned methane …

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are seen as the path forward for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors. Using SAFs over traditional fossil fuels abates carbon dioxide emissions but still may present soot emission problems. A milestone in the abatement of soot would be understating its formation mechanisms.
This study aims to quantify soot products resulting from an ethylene flame doped with iso-dodecane, a surrogate SAF component. The burner selected for the investigation is the novel Planar Mixing Layer Flame (PMLF) which allows the tracking of soot formation with the height above the burner (HAB) in a stable diffusion flame. A baseline ethylene-fueled flame …
Development Of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady State Approximation For Chemical Kinetics In Cfd, Abhinav Balamurugan
Development Of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady State Approximation For Chemical Kinetics In Cfd, Abhinav Balamurugan
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study analyzes the feasibility of On-The-Fly Quasi-Steady-State Approximation (OTF-QSSA) application for solving chemical kinetics within Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, aiming to reduce the computational demand of detailed mechanisms. An algorithm that dynamically identifies and designates Quasi-Steady-State (QSS) species at specific grid locations and instances during the simulation was developed. With this information, our method pseudo-delays the advancement of concentrations for these QSS species—effectively setting their rate of concentration change to zero for a set number iteration before updating using the detailed mechanism and thereby omitting the computationally intensive processes typically required for their calculation during those skipped iteration. …

Analysis Of Variations In Flow-Independent Liquid Jet-In-Crossflow Injections, Michael Scott
Analysis Of Variations In Flow-Independent Liquid Jet-In-Crossflow Injections, Michael Scott
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Liquid fuel injection is a critical mechanism for the deliverance of liquid fuel in contemporary aircraft propulsion combustion systems due to its outsized influence in providing optimal combustion conditions and improving overall aircraft efficiency and performance. Despite this, these liquid jet in crossflow (LJIC) systems are highly variable due to conditions in the jet and the surrounding airflow, leading to variability in performance behavior and inconsistency in fuel mixing and combustion efficiency. This has prompted the introduction of solid pintile obstructions of novel designs to provide a more flow-independent fuel injection scheme and decrease variability of the jet properties against …

Strategies to prevent or minimize propagation of thermal runaway in a pack of Li-ion cells are critically needed to ensure safe operation, storage and transportation. While significant literature already exists on thermal runaway simulations, several key questions of practical relevance have remained unaddressed. This work presents multi-mode heat transfer simulations to predict the onset and propagation of thermal runaway in a pack of cylindrical Li-ion cells. The impact of inter-cell gap and thermal properties of the interstitial material on onset and propagation of thermal runaway is studied. It is shown that high interstitial thermal conductivity promotes thermal runaway propagation. However, …

Automated Combustion Model Classification For Char Particle Distributions Using 3-D Morphology Analysis And Pore-Resolving Cfd Simulations, Dongyu Liang, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Combustion of pulverized coal involves millions of particles with a distribution of morphologies. A workflow is presented to characterize, classify, and model distributions of highly porous coal char particles. To understand the impacts of morphology, 3-D pore-resolving combustion simulations for 150 particles imaged with micro-CT are first performed. To facilitate modeling distributions of morphology in reactor-scale CFD, a machine learning algorithm is then trained to classify particles according to their expected combustion behavior and to select an accurate, computationally efficient 1-D particle-scale combustion model. Whereas existing approaches classify particles solely according to morphology and use 2-D measurements, the present approach …
A Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis Of Oxyacetylene Combustion Flow For Use In Material Response Boundary Conditions, Craig Meade
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Oxyacetylene torches are used in the aerospace industry and research to test thermal protection system materials (TPS) due to their high flame temperatures and high heat flux capabilities. The purpose of this work is to determine a combustion model to accurately simulate the high temperature flow of an oxyacetylene torch. The flow conditions around a sample material can then be used as boundary conditions when modeling TPS material response. Two separate combustion models with equilibrium chemistry were investigated using ANSYS Fluent™; the Eddy-Dissipation Model, and the Partially Premixed model. The results of this study are compared to existing experiments for validation.
Modeling Thermal Radiation In Combustion Environments: Progress And Challenges, Sandip Mazumder, Somesh P. Roy
Modeling Thermal Radiation In Combustion Environments: Progress And Challenges, Sandip Mazumder, Somesh P. Roy
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Modeling thermal radiation in combustion environments can be extremely challenging for two main reasons. First, the radiative transfer equation (RTE), which is the cornerstone of modeling radiation in such environments, is a five-dimensional integro-differential equation. Second, the absorption and scattering coefficients of molecular gases and particulates prevalent in combustion environments oscillate strongly with the wavenumber (or wavelength), i.e., the medium is strongly nongray, requiring the solution of the RTE for a large number of wavenumbers. This article reviews the progress that has been made in this area to date with an emphasis on the work performed over the past three …

The supercritical CO2 power cycle (sCO2 ) is a relatively new technology, which promises to reduce CO2 emissions with potentially higher efficiencies. However due to challenging conditions posed by supercritical pressures, the mixing and ignition phenomena in sCO2 combustion is relatively less understood and studied. The primary objective of the current study is to investigate these fundamental processes using homogeneous ignition calculations (HMI) and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Broadly, the study is divided into two major parts. In the first part supercritical mixing in sCO2 relevant conditions is investigated. To achieve this, DNS of temporally …
Characterization Of A Flex-Fuel Oxy-Combustion System Through Experimental Investigation And Computational Modeling, Md Mohieminul I. Khan
Characterization Of A Flex-Fuel Oxy-Combustion System Through Experimental Investigation And Computational Modeling, Md Mohieminul I. Khan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Oxy-fuel combustion has the potential to offer high thermal efficiency and lower pollutants emission compared to other existing combustion technologies. More than 63% of the worldâ??s electricity is produced by fossil fuel combustion which also is the major reason for greenhouse gas emissions. Oxy combustion offers a solution to it. Oxy combustion uses pure oxygen as an oxidizer instead of air which eliminates the NOx and SOx products from the exhaust. In oxy-combustion flue gas mainly consists of CO2 and water vapor. Furthermore, combustion in presence of pure oxygen results in higher flame temperature and hence promises higher thermal efficiency. …
Mean Pressure Gradient Effects On Flame-Flow Dynamics In A Cavity Combustor, David M. Smerina
Mean Pressure Gradient Effects On Flame-Flow Dynamics In A Cavity Combustor, David M. Smerina
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Pressure gradient confinement effects are experimentally investigated within a cavity combustor to analyze the flame interactions of premixed, cavity stabilized, flames in a high-speed combustor. Pressure gradient confinement effects are generated in a dual mode ramjet-scramjet (DMSR) by varying the wall geometry to form converging, diverging, and nominal configurations. The velocity field and flame position are captured temporally using simultaneous high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) and CH chemiluminescence. The evolution of the flow field and flame structure are analyzed, and the high temporal resolution of these measurements allows for the characterization of turbulence-flame interactions. Consideration of the combustion mode and …
Influences Of The Internal Residual On Combustion Instabilities In The Misfire And Partial Burn Regimes Of A Dilute Spark-Ignition Engine, Rachel Inez Stiffler
Influences Of The Internal Residual On Combustion Instabilities In The Misfire And Partial Burn Regimes Of A Dilute Spark-Ignition Engine, Rachel Inez Stiffler
Doctoral Dissertations
"Dilution in spark-ignition (SI) engines can improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions; however, increased levels of dilution either from excess oxidizer or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) causes combustion to become more strained and cycle-to-cycle variations increase. At high levels of dilution incomplete combustion events (i.e. misfires and partial burns) start to occur, which cause combustion instabilities and eventually a dilute limit is reached. It is known the combustion instabilities seen are primarily due to the feed-forward mechanism present in the residual gases, but it is still unknown what about the residual is influencing the dynamics under high levels of dilution …
