Assessment Of H2s-Induced Cracking Susceptibility In Steam Line Pipes And Weld Zones During Geothermal Well Construction, Riene Kaelamanda Pragitta, Yudha Pratesa
Assessment Of H2s-Induced Cracking Susceptibility In Steam Line Pipes And Weld Zones During Geothermal Well Construction, Riene Kaelamanda Pragitta, Yudha Pratesa
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
The susceptibility of steam line pipes, especially in the HAZ (heat-affected zone) and weldment areas, to hydrogen sulfide in the geothermal industry is crucial to understand from the early stages, particularly during construction. The combination of tensile stress from residual stresses after welding and metallurgical phase transformation makes the joint areas vulnerable to sulfide stress cracking. This condition becomes even more extreme when the equipment operates during the well stimulation phase. This research assesses the severity of H₂S-induced cracking using NACE MR0175 and ISO 15156-1 standards, focusing on the effects of pH and partial pressure of H₂S (pH₂S …
Co-Designing Manufacturing Systems For Robustness And Resilience: A Decision-Based Design Perspective, Mathew Baby
Co-Designing Manufacturing Systems For Robustness And Resilience: A Decision-Based Design Perspective, Mathew Baby
Theses and Dissertations
Manufacturing systems (MSs) comprise various stakeholders associated with the manufacture and supply of products required by customers and are interrelated by the flow of materials and information. The interrelated stakeholders make system-specific decisions and stakeholder-specific decisions across multiple levels of a decision hierarchy to satisfy many conflicting system-specific and stakeholder-specific requirements that define system and stakeholder performances. Given the stakeholder interrelations and conflicting nature of system-specific and stakeholder-specific requirements, system and stakeholder performances are correlated and conflicting.
In the Industry 5.0 era, there is an increased emphasis on the creation and equitable distribution of value among all the stakeholders in …

This study aims to explore the wave-induced flow dynamics around Reef Ball models using dye tracing techniques. Reef Balls are hemispherical artificial reefs with a hollow center and cavities throughout each face, they are designed in this manner to enhance coral reef restoration. Reef Balls rely on wave energy and current motion to facilitate water circulation and nutrient exchange within and surrounding their structure. To understand how wave action influences flow patterns around these artificial reefs, a scaled model experiment was designed to simulate real-world conditions. The experiments were conducted in the wave flume at Florida Institute of Technology’s Surf …
A Novel Macroscale Model For Deformation Twinning In Magnesium Alloys, Daniel S. Kenney
A Novel Macroscale Model For Deformation Twinning In Magnesium Alloys, Daniel S. Kenney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The characterization of deformation twinning in magnesium alloys is evaluated with macroscale modeling to predict material behavior and microstructure evolution with Internal State Variables (ISVs). Twinning in magnesium presents key challenges with constitutive modeling at the macroscale where the large number of grains with individual slip/twin must be generalized. This research proposes the Kearns factor (Kearns, 1965) as a method for quantifying the crystallographic texture associated with twinning and shows how the change in Kearns factors is associated with tension-compression asymmetry, anisotropic yielding and hardening, and anisotropic lateral strains. The material model developed in this work proposes a second rank …

Retrofitting Farm Equipment With Airflow Sensors, Jacob Bybee
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the Fall of 2024, our farm in Idaho upgraded our equipment from conventional seeding drills to more modern and sophisticated air seeder drills, particularly the John Deere 1900 Commodity Air Cart and John Deere 730 Air Disk Drill. In our case, this equipment was purchased used at an auction and had been a little modified. One modern convenience that this certain 730 Drill did not come with was a blockage monitoring system to alert the operator that a seed distribution tube was no longer distributing seeds. My question the became: Can an affordable, reliable airflow sensor system be designed …
Experimental And Theoretical Fracture Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Orthotropic V-Notches, Venkata Siva Sainath Bavapuram
Experimental And Theoretical Fracture Analysis Of Additively Manufactured Orthotropic V-Notches, Venkata Siva Sainath Bavapuram
Theses and Dissertations
This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the fracture behavior of additively manufactured orthotropic V-notched components made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) material. The research integrates both theoretical and finite element approaches to evaluate stress intensity factors (SIFs) in Modes-I and II, which are fundamental in characterizing stress field distributions around notches under applied loading conditions. Unlike isotropic materials, where stress fields depend only on geometry of the component, the anisotropic nature of 3D-printed ABS introduces a dependency on material properties that necessitate different approaches to include anisotropy of the material.
Tensile specimens are 3D-printed with specific material orientations to …

Tribological Characterization Of Laser Microtextured Ti-6al-4v Eli Alloy For Biomedical Applications, Nicholas Ricardo Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Titanium alloys have been gaining popularity in multiple fields due to their impressive physical properties, but struggle with poor tribological performance. This thesis aims to mitigate the poor tribological performance of titanium alloys through a laser microtexturing process. Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitial) alloy disks were evaluated against ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) pins. Four texturing patterns were created by changing the texture area fraction from 5 to 20% that were evaluated against untextured control samples. The tribological properties of the laser textured Ti-6Al-4V ELI disks were determined using a pin-on-disk tribometer under lubricated sliding …

Autonomous Control Of A Hybrid Unmanned Aerial Towed System On A Moving Platform, Zachary M. Miller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
With tethered rotor drones being more popular for aerial surveillance, moving platforms for tethered drones are being researched. However, these systems require constant power to the rotor drones for stabilization. With this difficulty in power consumption, a hybrid drone solution is presented. The hybrid drone is similar to an airplane, with quadcopter motors attached for stabilization and thrust when not moving.
The controller for the hybrid drone was tested and verified in simulation. The simulation of the system was built in Fortran and consists of a driver, a tether, and a hybrid drone. The driver was modeled after a generic …
Quantifying The Threshold For Fragmentation Of Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Drops, Aditya Parik
Quantifying The Threshold For Fragmentation Of Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Drops, Aditya Parik
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This dissertation investigates how the properties of liquid drops influence the minimum aerodynamic forces needed to cause the drop to fragment (breakup). For this work, we focus only on aerodynamic forces that are applied on a stationary drop by a sudden, uniform flow, a process called impulsive acceleration. Previous studies have largely focused on the fragmentation of spherical drops of Newtonian fluids (liquids with constant viscosity, like water), when impulsively accelerated in air-like ambient medium. Such systems only capture a limited range of drop and ambient properties (described by non-dimensional groups). Many real-world applications, such as aerial fire retardant delivery, …

Quantifying Buoyancy-Driven Exchange Flows Over Obstacle At The Great Salt Lake Using Rans Cfd, Mohammad Ikram Hossain Talukdar
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
This study examines how barriers, such as berms, affect the movement of water in the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The lake experiences two types of water flow: one, called a unidirectional gravity current, where denser water flows in a single direction, and another, known as buoyancy-driven exchange flow, where water flows in two opposite directions due to differences in both water density and surface elevation. These flows are important for understanding how water mixes and moves between the northern and southern parts of the lake. Using computer models, we simulated how these two types of water flows behave when …

Dynamics Of Rotating 2d Ellipse In Stratified Flow, Anton G. Kadomtsev
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Submersible vehicles that move through seawater are subjected to a variety of effects. Seawater has a non-uniform density because of uneven heating and the tendency of dense saltwater to sink. This non-uniform density distribution induced by gravity is known as stratification and introduces vertical confinement and internal gravity waves to flows around bodies. Along with translational motion, these vehicles also perform rotational motion. To identify the effects of density gradient, body shape, and rotation on the flow, 2D direct numerical simulations (DNS) are run and analyzed. The simulations are conducted using the open-source CFD solver Nek5000, utilizing its overset-grid-based methodology. …
