Investigating The Thermal Multibody Effects In Spherical Inclusions Of A Porous Matrix For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Nicholas Scholz
Open Access Master's Theses
As technology improves, there is a need for better and more efficient energy storage and lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the primary energy storage device. They have positive electrochemical properties, are easily accessible, and rechargeable. However, lithium-ion batteries have been known to fail, leading to research into the failure mechanisms. As some of these failure mechanisms, such as thermal runaway, depend on thermal interactions, this paper aims to investigates thermal multibody effects of spherical inclusions in a porous matrix to gain insight into thermal effects of a realistic lithium-ion battery microstructure. Analytical solutions to this problem, such as Maxwell’s thermal …
Propagation Of Vibro-Acoustic Energy In Ducts: Measurement, Simulation, And Attenuation Studies, Caoyang Li
Propagation Of Vibro-Acoustic Energy In Ducts: Measurement, Simulation, And Attenuation Studies, Caoyang Li
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Vibro-acoustic energy propagates through heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems through both airborne and structureborne paths. In this research, measurement and simulation studies are performed to better understand this propagation of energy and how to better attenuate the sound before it impacts building occupants.
First, a scaled-down experiment was developed to assist in the validation of numerical simulation models. A small source room was attached to a wooden duct with variable cross-sectional area. The sound power for both untreated and treated ductwork was measured using sound intensity scanning, and the insertion loss is the difference between untreated and treated …

Artificial Intelligence Enabled Machinery Fault Detection And Diagnosis Using Vibro-Acoustic Signals, Srinivasa Rao Ippili
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In various industries, the early detection of faults in rotating machinery is crucial to prevent system failures and ensure customer satisfaction. Typically, vibration measurement and diagnosis are employed for fault detection, but this process faces challenges in automation due to the complexity of installing and maintaining accelerometers, particularly in end-of-line quality control or pre-installed machinery health assessments. Acoustic signals, as a form of mechanical wave, offer an alternative for monitoring machinery while in operation. Unlike accelerometers, acoustic transducers are non-contact and easy to set up, enabling real-time data collection without interrupting equipment operation. However, utilizing acoustic signals in manufacturing poses …
Measurement And Simulation Of Aeroacoustic Sources Generated By Elementary Muffler Components, Seth Donkin
Measurement And Simulation Of Aeroacoustic Sources Generated By Elementary Muffler Components, Seth Donkin
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Mufflers and silencers are commonly used to control noise from sources such as internal combustion engines and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In these applications, flow interacts with muffler components generating aeroacoustic noise sources. In order to measure these sources in a lab setting, specialized flow rigs are designed to isolate aeroacoustic noise sources. Flow sometimes compromises muffler performance. However, muffler performance is sometimes improved because flow can increase the attenuation of some muffler elements such as perforates. To better understand the complicated impact of flow, the University of Kentucky developed a muffler test rig to measure insertion …

Microstructure-Based Modeling And Simulation Via A Nonlocal Multiphysics Discrete Approach, Donglai Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Many structures in engineering are subject to multiphysics loadings or environment. Computational modeling plays a significant role to predict or evaluate the performance of these structures, especially in the scenarios where the experimental investigation is cumbersome or prohibitively expensive. Microstructure-based modeling incorporates the information of microstructures of materials in numerical models, which can provide insights about the relationship between microstructures and mate- rial properties. This research developed a microstructure-based modeling framework for coupling diffusion-deformation simulation of solids. The model is based on a recent developed meshfree method referred to as lattice particle method in the literature. In the developed model, …

Provably Safe Control For Input-Constrained Robotic Systems, Pedram Rabiee
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation addresses challenges in control design for safety-critical robotic systems with input constraints. It focuses on developing novel control barrier function (CBF) approaches to ensure safety while optimizing performance. The work is motivated by the limitations of traditional methods in handling nonlinear systems with multiple constraints and actuator limits.
Three main contributions are presented. First, a soft-minimum barrier function is introduced, utilizing finite-time horizon predictions to create control forward invariant subsets of the safe set while respecting actuator constraints. This method is extended to multiple backup controls, which can enlarge the safe operating region.
Second, a technique for composing …

High-Fidelity Coupling For Studies Of Ablative Materials At Hypersonic Conditions, Aleksander Zibitsker
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The development of accurate models and robust numerical tools for simulating ablative thermal protection materials (TPMs) in hypersonic flows is crucial for advancing atmospheric entry and hypersonic technologies. Traditional methods for simulating ablative materials often rely on heavy assumptions, such as equal heat and mass transfer coefficients and chemical equilibrium in the boundary layer, leading to conservative thermal protection system (TPS) designs and insufficient accuracy for certain in-flight ablation phenomena.
This work presents a high-fidelity and versatile coupled framework between hypersonic flow and material response solvers. The flow domain is modeled with an innovative overset CHAMPS NBS-Cart solver, which features …
Multiscale Fiber Remodeling In The Heart Using A Finite Element Framework, Mohammad Mehri
Multiscale Fiber Remodeling In The Heart Using A Finite Element Framework, Mohammad Mehri
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The organization of myofibers and extra cellular matrix within the myocardium plays a significant role in defining cardiac function. When pathological events occur, such as myocardial infarction (MI) or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), this organization can become disrupted, leading to alteration in pumping performance. The current study proposes a multiscale finite element (FE) framework to determine realistic fiber distributions in the left ventricle (LV). This is achieved by implementing a stress-based fiber reorientation law, which seeks to align the fibers with local traction vectors, such that contractile force and load bearing capabilities are maximized. By utilizing the total stress (passive and …

On The Use Of The Local Reflection Coefficient To Assess The Diffuse Field Sound Absorption Coefficient Of A Porous Material, Franck Sgard, Noureddine Atalla, Olivier Robin
Études primaires
The diffuse field sound absorption coefficient (SAC) of a sound absorber can be obtained from an average over the incidence angles of the oblique incidence plane wave SAC. The plane wave SAC can be derived from the plane wave complex-valued reflection coefficient defined as the ratio of the reflected sound pressure at a given point on the material surface to the incident sound pressure at the same point. In practice, the material is excited by a monopole, and the reflection coefficient becomes a local quantity which is a function of the source height and the radial distance from the source. …

On Uncertainty For Ill-Posed Robot Decision Problems, Jared Joseph Beard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As robots adopt more real world responsibilities, they will be expected to solve more complicated problems. In some cases limited prior knowledge will result in unmodelled environmental conditions; in others, multiple users may have competing perspectives on how to frame a decision problem. Many existing frameworks, namely Markov decision processes (MDP) presuppose users have identified a specific problem with models sufficient to solve or learn a problem. If we wish to extend MDPs to novel problems or those heavily dependent on user feedback, autonomous decision makers must be able to identify limitations in how a given problem is framed and …

Impact Of Operational Conditions On The Transient Thermal Behavior Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Jairo Sebastian Casa
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Considering the high increase of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through the years, it is important to analyze the impact of the operational conditions, such as charging and discharging on the transient thermal behavior of LIBs for thermal management of Li-Ion batteries. A pseudo two-dimensional mathematical model based on the finite volume method (Doyle-Fuller Newman) available in an open-source environment such as Python, was utilized for the electrochemical evaluation of the Li-Ion battery. For simplicity, a lumped thermal model was integrated with the electrochemistry model to evaluate the transient behavior of Li-Ion cells under varying conditions. Both the electrochemistry and lumped thermal …
Stability Analysis Of Vertical Industrial Pressure Vessel Resting On Load Cells Subjected To A Seismic Load., Kameron W. Nez
Stability Analysis Of Vertical Industrial Pressure Vessel Resting On Load Cells Subjected To A Seismic Load., Kameron W. Nez
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Instability of structures, such as large vertical pressure vessels, is always an issue under the seismic load. In this current work, the acceleration that causes instability for a vertical pressure vessel has been determined experimentally using scaled models. This instability is caused by the tipping of the tall structure that is not completely fixed to the ground. This method is applied for three different sizes of pressure vessels, representing 50 CuFt to 1100 CuFt full scale models. These experimental results are compared with theoretical models. Using dimensional analysis, the accelerations that will cause the instability in the actual full-size models …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The settling behavior of individual spheres in a quiescent fluid was studied experimentally. The dynamics of the spheres was analyzed in the parameter space of particle-to-fluid density ratio (Γ) and Galileo number (Ga), with Γ ∈ (1.1,7.9) and Ga ∈ (100,340). The experimental results showed for the first time that the mean trajectory angle with the vertical exhibits a complex behavior as Ga and Γ are varied. Numerically predicted regimes such as Vertical Periodic for low Γ values, and Planar Rotating for high Γ values were validated. In particular, for the denser spheres, a clear transition from planar to non-planar …

Barriers And Variable Spacing Enhance Convective Cooling And Increase Power Output In Solar Pv Plants, Brooke Stanislawski, Todd Harman, Raul Bayoan Cal, Marc Calaf
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
When the temperature of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules rises, efficiency drops and module degradation accelerates. Thus, it is beneficial to reduce module operating temperatures. Previous studies of solar power plants have illustrated that incoming flow characteristics, turbulent mixing, and array geometry can strongly impact convective cooling, as measured by the convective heat transfer coefficient h. In the fields of heat transfer and plant canopy flow, previous work has shown that system-scale arrangement modifications—e.g., variable spacing, barriers, or windbreaks—can passively alter the flow, enhance turbulent mixing, and influence convection. However, researchers have not yet explored how variable spacing or barriers …

1d Granular Chains Of Closed-Cell Pvc Foams Under Low And Medium Velocity Impacts, Vikranth Kumar Reddy Madhirala
Open Access Dissertations
Chapter 1: This study experimentally analyses the deformation and energy retention behavior often closed-cell PVC foam disks constituting a one-dimensional granular chain subjected to low-velocity impacts. A pressure-driven impactor loads disk chains of two densities, each at 1 and 10 m/s. The deformations of the disks are captured using high-speed cameras, and the chain’s input and output forces are recorded during the impact. Energy retained by the chain and the disks is calculated using the deformations of the disks, input, output, and contact forces. The results show that the energy retained by the chain of H130 foam is 3 …
