In this study, the changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties during isothermal heat treatment of cast steel before and after hot deformation were investigated using medium carbon steel with low alloy content. The microstructural characteristics of the cast and hot-rolled medium-carbon steel under isothermal heat-treatment conditions were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with electron backscatter diffraction. The variation in the mechanical properties was evaluated using Rockwell hardness and tensile tests. Nowadays, most indoor cooling control strategies are based solely on the dry-bulb temperature, which is not close to a guarantee of thermal comfort of occupants. Prior research has shown cooling energy savings from use of a thermal comfort control methodology ranging from 10 to 85%. The present research advances prior research to enable thermal comfort control in residential buildings using a smart Wi-Fi thermostat. "Fanger's Predicted Mean Vote model" is used to define thermal comfort. This research focuses on developing metal matrix composite reinforced by polymer-derived ceramic fibers. The force-spun AMT nanofibers were heat treated into tungsten carbide and then mixed with aluminum powder using cold pressing and sintering to produce the composites. The basic mechanical properties of this composite are investigated by density measurement, hardness and compression testing. SEM, EDS and XRD were used to test the morphology of tungsten carbide fibers. EDS identified a near-perfect W-C ratio in tungsten carbide fibers 1000 °C. In this thesis, we employ a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to identify the effect of chemical doping on (a) thermodynamic phase stability, and (b) Na-ion conduction in Na3SbS4 (NSS) solid-state electrolytes. We found that (a) Se doped electrolytes, namely, Na3SbSexS4-x undergo a tetragonal-to-cubic structural phase transition at x > 3 (Se-rich), and (b) the size, valence, and electronegativity of chemical dopants that substitute Na in Na3SbS4 have a cumulative profound impact on Na-ion conductivity. Strain hardening and associated deformation mechanisms play a determining role in the performance of metallic materials. The objective of the doctoral research was to explore and fundamentally understand the strain hardening mechanisms in the next generation of advanced engineering steels. Two main work hardening mechanisms, notably, twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)) were identified that governed strength and ductility. In the nanograined austenitic steel with high strength-high ductility combination, processed by the novel phase reversion concept, twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) was the governing deformation mechanism and contributed to good ductility. In this work, we report on the synthesis, characterization of tin (Sn) incorporated gallium oxide Ga2O3 compounds, also included in this work is the effect of tin concentration related to the optical and electrochemical properties. The Sn incorporation into Ga2O3 creates a significant reduction in the bandgap and causes a nonlinear optical activity as the concentration varies. Substantial investigation performed to the structure, phase, and morphology of the mixed compounds governed by the stoichiometry equation Ga2−2xSnxO3-ɗ indicates that the Sn incorporation from 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.30 has a significant effect on these properties. This work presents the fundamental ice collection experiments conducted under rarefied flow regime to develop a high-capacity cryogenic heat pipe for ice recollection on the Moon’s surface. Preliminary ice collection experiments are conducted under cryogenic vacuum environment of 1.5 × 10-2 Torr and -60 °C. Natural titanium diboride (TiB2) has been reported the 5th hardest material on earth. Due to its superior properties, such as high density, high elastic modulus, and high compressive strength, TiB2 becomes one of the most suitable ceramic reinforcements for applications with severe friction and heavy loading conditions.
