Deepsea Coral Sample Container, Sara Passantino, Andrew Noble, Casey Smith, Thomas Smith

Mechanical Engineering

In order to better understand the health of our oceans and the species that inhabit them, scientists often collect samples for later analysis onshore. The demanding deep-sea environment makes this collection process a challenging engineering task. Samples must first be located, then removed from the seafloor and stored for transportation to the surface. The performance of the engineered solutions that complete each of these tasks is critical in allowing marine scientists to maximize the insight obtained from their expeditions. Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE) is an organization that performs such collection of organisms with the help of remotely operated …

One proposed pathway forward is to utilize a gas phase for the working fluid in the system such as supercritical carbon dioxide.

A composite gas phase modular receiver is being developed by researchers at Boise State University and the University of Tulsa. The …

Constitutive Modeling Of Force-Controlled Fatigue Testing In Human Meniscus Tissue, Bradley Scott Henderson Dec 2020

Constitutive Modeling Of Force-Controlled Fatigue Testing In Human Meniscus Tissue, Bradley Scott Henderson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The meniscus is a wedge-shaped fibrocartilaginous tissue located between the femur and tibia that helps stabilize the knee and protect the underlying cartilage. There are 2.5 million reported knee injuries each year, making it the most injured joint in the human body. Nearly twenty percent of these injuries are due to a torn meniscus, leading to over half a million meniscus surgeries performed in the United States annually. Therefore, it is critical to understand the failure modes of meniscus tissue to prevent these debilitating injuries. A failure mode that accounts for one-third of all meniscus injuries is repeated exposure to …

In Vitro Method To Quantify And Visualize Volumetric Wear In Meniscus Subjected To Joint Loading Using A 3d Optical Scanner, Kate J. Benfield

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The menisci are fibrocartilaginous soft tissues that act to absorb and distribute load across the surface of the knee joint. As a result of mechanical wear and large repetitive loading, meniscus tissue can begin to breakdown, or degenerate. Meniscus degeneration increases the risk of tearing, weakened tissue integrity, and the progression of osteoarthritis. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the wear behavior of whole human meniscus to identify conditions that may significantly increase the risk of degeneration.

The objective of this study is to develop and validate an in vitro methodology for characterizing volumetric wear behavior in whole human meniscus …

A Modified Peng-Robinson Cubic Equation Of State Based On Bayesian Framework, Wei Chen Dec 2020

A Modified Peng-Robinson Cubic Equation Of State Based On Bayesian Framework, Wei Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Peng-Robinson cubic equations of state (PR-EoSs) as one of the most popular two-parameter cubic equations of state (2P-EoSs) are widely used to calculate thermodynamic properties of pure substances and their mixtures. However, the prediction accuracy of 2P-EoSs varies significantly among different substances due to its intrinsic limitation. To this end, many modifications have focused on changing the dependence structure of 𝛼 function with temperature for PR-EoS to enhance prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian framework to calibrate a new 𝛼 function, which is a bias-corrected parametrized model form for the PR-EoS. The developed PR-EoS with the calibrated …

Nonlinear Frequency Tuning Of Pre-Curved Micro-Scale Beams, Mackenzie Rae Robatin Dec 2020

Nonlinear Frequency Tuning Of Pre-Curved Micro-Scale Beams, Mackenzie Rae Robatin

Theses and Dissertations

Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) have many common advantages in applications due to their small size and ability to integrate with electronics. For MEMS with vibrating elements, other advantages include their tunable resonant frequencies and the frequency range in which the systems operate. Also, the damping in these devices is often so light that it is nearly negligible, resulting in sharp resonance peaks with good frequency selectivity. Most such devices are designed to operate in their linear range. However, large amplitudes are often desired in order to reduce the relative effects of noise. In such cases, due to mechanical and electrostatic nonlinear …

Material Model Characterization Of A Ti/Sic Metal Matrix Nanocomposite Coating Subjected To Hypervelocity Impact, Pouya Shojaei, Riccardo Scazzosi, Mohamed Trabia, Brendan Otoole, Marco Giglio, Xing Zhang, Yiliang Liao, Andrea Manes

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Titanium alloys have been extensively used in the aerospace industry because of their outstanding properties, such as high strength-to-weight ratios, high corrosion resistances, and high melting points. However, it is hypothesized that the performance of titanium alloys can be further enhanced to be more resistant to hypervelocity impact by coating them. Earlier experimental investigations showed that coating a Ti-6Al-4V substrate by Ti/SiC Metal Matrix Nanocomposite (MMNC) improved hypervelocity impact resistance of the composite. The coating had 7% SiC by volume. These experiments were simulated using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) modeling approach. Johnson-Cook material models were used for the Ti-6Al-4V …

Lead To Can Abrasion (Ltca) Test, Scott Mangin, Karthik Padmanabhan, Craig Icban

Mechanical Engineering

Pacemakers are medical devices which regulate a person’s heartbeat through electric pulses delivered via an endocardial lead attached to the heart. When a pacemaker is implanted in a patient, there is usually excess length left on the lead. Surgeons will typically wrap the excess lead length around the pacemaker device and close the wound. However, wrapping the lead around the pacemaker outer surface can open the lead to abrasion and cause the lead’s vital electrical insulation to be compromised. This is currently tested using an existing abrasion fixture at Abbott. However, the current tester does not yield consistent data results …
