Studies Of Dislocation Density Quantification Via Cross-Correlation Ebsd, Samuel Searle Friedbaum
Studies Of Dislocation Density Quantification Via Cross-Correlation Ebsd, Samuel Searle Friedbaum
Theses and Dissertations
One conventional method for studying dislocations uses the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), a complex and expensive piece of equipment which requires extensive specimen preparation in order to thin the specimens to electron transparent thickness. Newer High Resolution Electron Backscatter Diffraction (HREBSD) methods of determining geometrically necessary dislocation content via cross-correlation promise to be able to produce estimates of the dislocation density of the sample over a larger area with considerably less preparation time and using a much more accessible instrument. However, the accuracy of the new EBSD technique needs more experimental verification, including consideration of possible changes in the specimen …
Foot-Controlled Supernumerary Robotic Arm: Foot Interfaces And Human Abilities, Brandon William Rudolph
Foot-Controlled Supernumerary Robotic Arm: Foot Interfaces And Human Abilities, Brandon William Rudolph
Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering
A supernumerary robotic limb (SRL) is a robotic limb that can act as an extra arm or leg for a human user. An unsolved issue with SRLs is how to operate them well. One possibility is to control an SRL with the foot, which offers the benefit of a third arm because the user’s arms remain unoccupied. While hand interfaces are common, foot interfaces are not well understood. Developing a good foot interface is challenging because of differences between feet and hands, such as the larger inertia of the leg. This thesis presents work to determine some design principles for …
The Axisymmetric Harmonic Element Including Gyroscopic Effects: A Complete Derivation, Zachary Charles Glick
The Axisymmetric Harmonic Element Including Gyroscopic Effects: A Complete Derivation, Zachary Charles Glick
Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering
Various types of finite elements have been used in the prediction of critical speeds of turbomachinery. Among these, axisymmetric harmonic elements provide both accurate natural frequency prediction and computational speed. Yet, a full derivation of such an element including gyroscopic effects is not widely available in the relevant literature. In this work, the finite elements for rotordynamics available in the literature are reviewed. Derivations necessary for the axisymmetric harmonic element mass, gyroscopic damping, and stiffness matrices and the equations of motion are clearly expounded using Hamilton’s principle. The formulation is applied to two model shafts, and the comparison of results …
Calibration Of Hot-Film X-Probes For High Accuracy Angle Alignment In Wind Tunnels, Dallin L. Jackson
Calibration Of Hot-Film X-Probes For High Accuracy Angle Alignment In Wind Tunnels, Dallin L. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis investigates the use of hot-film thermal anemometers to align a plate on a wind tunnel at Hill Air Force Base that is used to calibrate Angle of Attack Transmitters on F-16s. A reoccurring problem with this wind tunnel is that no two instruments can verify an angle reading of the the mounting plate for the Angle of Attack Transmitters to the air stream in the wind tunnel. Multiple thermal anemometer calibration methods, such as Jorgensen’s equation and a look-up table are implemented to attempt to achieve consistent measurements between multiple probes. The results show that it is necessary …
Isentropic Efficiency And Theoretical Analysis Of The Planetary Rotor Expander, Joseph L. James
Isentropic Efficiency And Theoretical Analysis Of The Planetary Rotor Expander, Joseph L. James
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Expanders allow pressurized fluids to undergo a pressure decrease in a controlled environment via volumetric growth to extract fluid energy. There are many types of expanders, and the objective of this thesis is to model the efficiencies of the planetary rotor expander (PRE), a century-old design undeveloped due to insufficient manufacturing capabilities (until recently). Geometric relationships are derived and mathematical models are generated to determine the efficiency of the PRE as a function of design variables. Two industrially relevant case studies show that, to maximize isentropic efficiency, the planetary rotor expander (PRE) rotational frequency is maximized and rotor geometry optimized.

Trouble free use of a product and its associated services for a specified minimum period of time is a major factor to win the customer's trust in the product. Rapid and easy serviceability to maintain its functionalities plays a key role in achieving this goal. However, the sustainability of such a model cannot be promised unless the current health status of the product is monitored and condition-based maintenance is exercised. Internet of Things (IoT), an important connectivity paradigm of recent times, which connects physical objects to the internet for real-time information exchange and execution of physical actions via wired/wireless protocols. …

During the part forming in laser powder bed fusion process, thermal distortion is one big problem due to the thermal stress which is caused by the high cooling rate and temperature gradient. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of process parameters on thermal and stress evolution in the melt zone. In this paper, a 3D finite element model for Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process based on sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical field analysis was developed for accurately predicting thermal history and surface features, like distortion and residual stress. Temperature dependent material properties for performed material 304L stainless steel are incorporated …

Takeoff And Performance Tradeoffs Of Retrofit Distributed Electric Propulsion For Urban Transport, Kevin Moore, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
While vertical takeoff and landing aircraft have shown promise for urban air transport, distributed electric propulsion on existing aircraft may offer immediately implementable alternatives. Distributed electric propulsion could potentially decrease takeoff distances enough to enable thousands of potential inter-city runways. This conceptual study explores the effects of a retrofit of open-bladed electric propulsion units. To model and explore the design space we use blade element momentum method, vortex lattice method, linear-beam finite element analysis, classical laminate theory, composite failure, empirically-based blade noise modeling, motor and motor-controller mass models, and gradient-based optimization. With liftoff time of seconds and the safe total …
Application Of Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (Efit) To Three-Dimensional Wave Propagation And Scattering In Arbitrary Geometries, Sean M. Raley
Master's Theses
Over several decades, railroad Ultrasonic Testing (UT) industry techniques have primarily been developed through simple analytical modelling and experimental approaches. However, with present-day computational capabilities, we can use numerical techniques like the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT) to fine-tune systems for complex applications before the fabrication process begins. EFIT is well-established as a useful method in numerical analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation with distinct advantages over the Finite Difference Time Domain method. Several software packages exist that use EFIT as the primary method for simulating the behavior of ultrasonic waves over time in 2 or 3 dimensions, but none of …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The demand of data storage in the world is increasing, with this increase, demand for large data centers is growing. In response, we need to look for energy-efficient solutions to reduce the energy consumptions of the data centers. We want to reduce the energy used for cooling while keeping the data center equipment temperature in allowable range in high power density data center. The liquid or hybrid cooled servers are the alternatives that may be used instead of traditional air-cooled servers at Rack Level for the cooling power - different inlet temperatures and different percentage of hybrid cooling. This will …

Parameter Estimation And Dynamic State Observer Design For Vapor Compression Systems, Travis D. Pruitt
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Between cooling our house, our workplace, and keeping our food cold both in home and commercially (among other uses), the vapor compression cycle (VCC) is a common method for removing heat from various environments and it accounts for a significant amount of the energy used throughout the world. Therefore, with an ever-growing demand for more efficient processes and reduced energy consumption, improving the ability to accurately model, predict the performance of, and control VCC systems is beneficial to society as whole.
While there is much information available regarding the performance for some of the components found in VCC systems, much …
Electrostatically Actuated Double Wall Carbon Nanotubes To Include Intertube Van Der Waals Forces, Ezequiel Juarez Ocanas
Electrostatically Actuated Double Wall Carbon Nanotubes To Include Intertube Van Der Waals Forces, Ezequiel Juarez Ocanas
Theses and Dissertations
This work deals with the amplitude-frequency and amplitude-voltage responses of parametric and primary resonances of electrostatically actuated double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). Nonlinear forces acting on the DWCNT are intertube van der Waals and electrostatic forces. Soft AC excitation and small viscous damping are assumed. In coaxial vibration, the outer and inner carbon nanotubes move together (in-phase), maintaining their geometric concentricity; while in noncoaxial vibration, the CNTs move in opposite direction (out-of-phase). Modal coordinate transformation is formulated. The Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) is used to find the free response solutions of the DWCNT. The Reduced Order Model (ROM) method is also …

An automatic powder deposition and leveling mechanism was designed and constructed to assist in surface roughness experiments for titanium-boron samples. Previously developed energy models and x-ray diffraction analysis was used to confirm the creation of titanium diboride samples. To study TiB2 at different energy values, a 52 (2 factors, 5 levels) factorial design was used and carried out under an argon atmosphere, through the AM250 laser melting system. Two experimental runs were carried out and a total of 50 samples were assigned a surface roughness measurement through the Dektak XT profilometer. Graphically and with statistical analysis, the data was determined …
Optimal Control Strategies For Complex Biological Systems, Afroza Shirin
Optimal Control Strategies For Complex Biological Systems, Afroza Shirin
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
To better understand and to improve therapies for complex diseases such as cancer or diabetes, it is not sufficient to identify and characterize the interactions between molecules and pathways in complex biological systems, such as cells, tissues, and the human body. It also is necessary to characterize the response of a biological system to externally supplied agents (e.g., drugs, insulin), including a proper scheduling of these drugs, and drug combinations in multi drugs therapies. This obviously becomes important in applications which involve control of physiological processes, such as controlling the number of autophagosome vesicles in a cell, or regulating the …
All Season Heat Pipe System., Adrienne Marie Parsons
All Season Heat Pipe System., Adrienne Marie Parsons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our energy choices impact the earth’s natural systems and climate. As this becomes increasingly important, the need for decreasing our energy usage is essential. Conventional passive solar systems can significantly reduce the heating load. Similarly, passive ambient energy systems, such as ventilation and sky radiation, can reduce cooling loads. However, the integration of passive heating and cooling systems in the same building and the benefits of actively controlling these otherwise passive systems to maximize annual energy savings has largely been unexplored. This study first evaluates the building cooling capacity of sky radiation, which was previously identified to have the greatest …
Improving Flow-Induced Hemolysis Prediction Models., Mohammad Mohaghegh Faghih
Improving Flow-Induced Hemolysis Prediction Models., Mohammad Mohaghegh Faghih
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Partial or complete failure of red blood cell membrane, also known as hemolysis, is a persistent issue with almost all blood contacting devices. Many experimental and theoretical contributions over the last few decades have increased insight into the mechanisms of mechanical hemolysis in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes, with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive, mechanistic and universal hemolysis prediction model. My research is broadly divided into two sections: theoretical/analytical/Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses and experimental tests. The first part of my research revolved entirely around analyzing the simplest and most popular hemolysis model, commonly called as the …
Computational Studies Of Thermal Properties And Desalination Performance Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Yang Hong
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
During the last 30 years, microelectronic devices have been continuously designed and developed with smaller size and yet more functionalities. Today, hundreds of millions of transistors and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor cells can be designed and integrated on a single microchip through 3D packaging and chip stacking technology. A large amount of heat will be generated in a limited space during the operation of microchips. Moreover, there is a high possibility of hot spots due to non-uniform integrated circuit design patterns as some core parts of a microchip work harder than other memory parts. This issue becomes acute as stacked microchips get …
Simulation Framework And Potential Field Relocation For Systems Of Shared Autonomous Vehicles, Landon Blaine Wright
Simulation Framework And Potential Field Relocation For Systems Of Shared Autonomous Vehicles, Landon Blaine Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Shared autonomous vehicles present a significant opportunity to change the way that urban mobility is viewed by society. By providing a shared mobility platform at a cost lower than has previously been obtainable there are significant possibilites to enable a new era of mobility for consumers. This opportunity, however, comes with significant risks in the form of emissions and increased road usage. Understanding how the risks and benefits of shared autonomous vehicles can be balanced is crucial to be able to adequately prepare for their introduction. One of the primary ways to understand the interplay between the risks and benefits …

Characterization Of Dislocation - Grain Boundary Interactions Through Electron Backscatter Diffraction, Landon Thomas Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Further understanding of dislocation-GB interactions is critical to increasing the performance of polycrystalline metals. The research contained within this dissertation aims to further dislocation-GB interaction understanding through three research studies. First, the effect of noise in EBSPs on GND calculations was evaluated in order to improve dislocation characterization via HR-EBSD. Second, the evolution of GNDs and their effects on back stress was studied through experimental and computational methods applied to tantalum oligo specimens. Third, statistical analysis was used to evaluate grain parameters and current GB transmission parameters on their correlation with dislocation accumulation.

Distribution Of Tremorogenic Activity Among The Majorsuperficial Muscles Of The Upper Limb Insubjects With Essential Tremor, David Jordan Standring
Theses and Dissertations
Optimized peripheral tremor suppression could address many limitations of surgical or medicinal treatments of Essential Tremor, however it is not well understood how the tremorogenic activity is distributed among the muscles of the upper limb, and therefore how to optimize such suppression. We recorded electromyographic (EMG) activity in the 15 major superficial muscles from the shoulder to the wrist while subjects performed postural and kinetic tasks similar to activities of daily living. We calculated the power spectral density and computed the total power in the tremor band (4"12 Hz) for each muscle, from which we determined the distribution of tremorogenic …

A Displacement Controlled Fatigue Test Method For Additively Manufactured Materials, Mohammad Masud Parvez, Yitao Chen, Sreekar Karnati, Connor Coward, Joseph William Newkirk, Frank W. Liou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel adaptive displacement-controlled test setup was developed for fatigue testing on mini specimens. In property characterization of additive manufacturing materials, mini specimens are preferred due to the specimen preparation, and manufacturing cost but mini specimens demonstrate higher fatigue strength than standard specimens due to the lower probability of material defects resulting in fatigue. In this study, a dual gauge section Krouse type mini specimen was designed to conduct fatigue tests on additively manufactured materials. The large surface area of the specimen with a constant stress distribution and increased control volume as the gauge section may capture all different types …

Fluid Flow Analysis Of Diluted Evaporating American Whiskey Droplets., Martin J. Brown Vi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The recent discovery of the unique structures, whiskey webs, formed when the evaporation of diluted American whiskey, has raised many questions as to the nature of the structures. Their formation process follows as such: (1) dilution of the whiskey to form nanoaggregates, (2) formation of a monolayer at the air-liquid interface, (3) chaotic ethanol evaporation caused monolayer collapse (via dynamic pressure), (4) bulk fluid evaporation caused monolayer collapse (via reduction of surface area), where the web-like structures reside on the surface, and finally, (5) web-like structures deposit on the substrate. The webs imaged via SEM had a striking resemblance to …

On The Measurement Of Energy Dissipation Of Adhered Cells With The Quartz Microbalance With Dissipation Monitoring, Amir Monemian Esfahani, Weiwei Zhao, Jennifer Y. Chen, Changjin Huang, Ning Xi, Jun Xi, Ruiguo Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We previously reported the finding of a linear correlation between the change of energy dissipation (ΔD) of adhered cells measured with the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and the level of focal adhesions of the cells. To account for this correlation, we have developed a theoretical framework for assessing the ΔD-response of adhered cells. We rationalized that the mechanical energy of an oscillating QCM-D sensor coupled with a cell monolayer is dissipated through three main processes: the interfacial friction through the dynamic restructuring (formation and rupture) of cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) bonds, the interfacial viscous damping by the liquid …

A Study Of Human Balance And Coordination Using A Head Mounted Display, Daniel Gracia De Luna
Theses and Dissertations
Virtual Reality (VR) is growing with new technologies and applications. The new technologies help the user to feel more immersed in virtual environments, but interaction and immersion is an area that has not been well studied. Immersion is the feeling and reaction of users while they are in a virtual environment. This investigation is focused on the study of the human balance and coordination when human subjects are inside a virtual environment. Over 60 subjects are studied under an experiment, where their trajectory is captured and analyzed to identify possible differences or similitudes between male and female subjects.

The electrochemical behavior and susceptibility to pitting corrosion of CrFeCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloys were studied in a 0.1 M NaCl solution at temperatures ranging from 25 to 75 °C. Electrochemical measurements revealed that CrMnFeCoNi is more susceptible to oxide film breakdown and localized corrosion compared to CrFeCoNi. Post corrosion microscopic observations showed severe pitting corrosion for CrMnFeCoNi in higher temperatures compared to CrFeCoNi. Based on in-depth XPS profile measurements on the remaining oxide films, this behavior was attributed to the depletion of Cr in the oxide film and detrimental presence of Mn in the matrix solid solution of …

In order to minimize loss of economic investment and human lives, structural health monitoring (SHM) of these high-rate systems is being researched. An experimental testbed has been developed to validate SHM methods in a controllable and repeatable laboratory environment. This study applies the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory to this testbed to develop analytical solutions of the system. The transverse vibration of a clamped-pinned-free beam with a point mass at the free end is discussed in detail. Results are derived for varying pin locations and mass values. Eigenvalue …
Design Optimization, Analysis, And Control Of Walking Robots, Wankun Sirichotiyakul
Design Optimization, Analysis, And Control Of Walking Robots, Wankun Sirichotiyakul
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Passive dynamic walking refers to the dynamical behavior of mechanical devices that are able to naturally walk down a shallow slope in a stable manner, without using actuation or sensing of any kind. Such devices can attain motions that are remarkably human-like by purely exploiting their natural dynamics. This suggests that passive dynamic walking machines can be used to model and study human locomotion; however, there are two major limitations: they can be difficult to design, and they cannot walk on level ground or uphill without some kind of actuation.
This thesis presents a mechanism design optimization framework that allows …

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to predict the transient thermal cycle and optimize process parameters to analyze these effects on deformation and residual stresses. However, the process of predicting the thermal history in this process with the FEA method is usually time-consuming, especially for large-scale parts. In this paper, an effective predictive model of part deformation and residual stress was developed for accurately predicting deformation and residual stresses in large-scale parts. An equivalent body heat flux proposed from the single layer laser scan model was imported as the thermal load to the layer by layer model. The hatched layer …
