Correlation Microanalysis Of Localized Molecular Structure And Nano-Mechanical Property Of Pvdf Based Copolymer, Wen Qian, Shuo Sun, Charles Nguyen, Stephen Ducharme, Joesph A. Turner

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Poly (vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers, are well-recognized electroactive polymers. The PVDF polymer can crystallize in a quasi-hexagonal close-packed “β-phase” structure with the dipoles of all chains aligned with maximum spontaneous polarization [1-3]. Due to the limited availability of quantitative methods for nanoscale molecular structure and mechanical analysis, the polymer organization has not been fully optimized. For such ferroelectric polymers, the influence of nanoscale molecular structure on mechanical response is not well understood. In this paper, we demonstrate nanoscale characterization and measurement techniques, by comprehensive integrating atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nano-infrared (nanoIR) spectroscopy, nanoindentation, chemical nanoIR mapping, …

The objective of this study is to characterize the micromechanical properties of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) composites reinforced by grade 420 stainless steel (SS) particles with a specific focus on the interphase properties. The specimens were manufactured using 3D printing techniques due to its many benefits, including high accuracy, cost effectiveness and customized geometry. The adopted fused filament fabrication resulted in a thin interphase layer with an average thickness of 3 μm. The mechanical properties of each phase, as well as the interphase, were characterized by nanoindentation tests. The effect of matrix degradation, i.e., imperfect bonding, on the elastic modulus of …

Hemodynamic Interference Of Serial Stenoses And Its Impact On Ffr And Ifr Measurements, Siyeong Ju, Linxia Gu Jan 2019

Hemodynamic Interference Of Serial Stenoses And Its Impact On Ffr And Ifr Measurements, Siyeong Ju, Linxia Gu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The hemodynamic interference of serial stenoses poses challenges for identifying the functional severity using the fractional flow reserve (FFR) method. The instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR), i.e., the distal-to-proximal pressure ratio at 75% of diastole, was recently proposed to overcome the disadvantages of the FFR. However, the underlying mechanism remained ambiguous due to the lack of quantitative definition of hemodynamic interference. The objective of this study is to quantitatively define the hemodynamic interference and then examine its role on the FFR and iFR measurements. Pressure distributions, velocity fields, and Q-criterion which identifies vortices, were obtained through the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

Interface Facilitated Reorientation Of Mg Nanolayers In Mg-Nb Nanolaminates, Y. Chen, Mingyu Gong, N. A. Mara, Jian Wang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Mg/Nb nanolaminates synthesized through vapor deposition techniques exhibit high flow strength without conventional twinning in Mg. In this work, we investigated the influence of laminated microstructures on deformation mechanisms of Mg nanolayers. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we explored that (0001)-oriented Mg layers transform or re-orient to {10¯10}-oriented Mg layers through nucleation and growth of {10¯12} twins by atomic shuffling, instead of conventional {10¯12} twinning shear. Such a reorientation accommodates in-plane compressive strain and out-of-plane tensile strain when Mg/Nb laminates are subjected to compression parallel to the Mg/Nb interfaces. The nucleation of {10¯12} twins is promoted at the Mg/Nb interface due …

Predictive Peridynamic 3d Models Of Pitting Corrosion In Stainless Steel With Formation Of Lacy Covers, Siavash Jafarzadeh, Florin Bobaru, Ziguang Chen

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this work, the peridynamic corrosion model is used for 3D simulation of pitting corrosion in stainless steel. Models for passivation and salt layer formation are employed to predict detailed characteristics of pit growth kinetic in stainless steels, such as lacy cover formation on top of the pit, and the diffusion-controlled regime at the pit bottom. The model is validated against an experimentally grown pit on 316L stainless steel in NaCl solution. Lacy covers in this model are formed autonomously during the simulation process. They are remarkably similar to the covers observed on top of the real pits.

Propagating, Evanescent, And Complex Wavenumber Guided Waves In High-Performance Composites, Victor Giurgiutiu, Mohammad Faisal Haider Jan 2019

Propagating, Evanescent, And Complex Wavenumber Guided Waves In High-Performance Composites, Victor Giurgiutiu, Mohammad Faisal Haider

Faculty Publications

The study of propagating, evanescent and complex wavenumbers of guided waves (GWs) in high-performance composites using a stable and robust semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) method is presented. To facilitate understanding of the wavenumber trajectories, an incremental material change study is performed moving gradually from isotropic aluminum alloy to carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The SAFE results for an isotropic aluminum alloy plate are compared with the exact analytical solutions, which shows that N = 20 SAFE elements across the thickness provides <0.5% error in the highest evanescent wavenumber for the given frequency-wavenumber range. The material change study reveals that reducing the transverse and shear moduli moves the wavenumber solution towards one similar to composite material. The comparison of the propagating, evanescent and complex wavenumber trajectories between composites and aluminum alloy show that antisymmetric imaginary Lamb wave modes always exist in composites although they may not exist in isotropic aluminum alloy at some frequencies. The wavenumber trajectories for a unidirectional CFRP plate show that the range of real wavenumber is much smaller than in the isotropic aluminum alloy. For laminated CFRP composite plates (e.g., unidirectional, off-axis, transverse, cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates), the quasi Lamb wave and shear horizontal (SH) wave trajectories are also identified and discussed. The imaginary SH wave trajectories in laminated composites are distorted due to the presence of ±45 plies. The convergence study of the SAFE method in various CFRP laminates indicates that sufficient accuracy can always be achieved by increasing the number of SAFE elements. Future work will address the stress-continuity between composite layers.

Scaling Analysis And Experimental Investigation Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, David Thomas Billups Jan 2019

Scaling Analysis And Experimental Investigation Of A Rotating Detonation Engine, David Thomas Billups

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pressure gain combustion (PGC) technologies, specifically rotating detonation engines (RDEs), are poised to provide the next big leap in gas turbine engine advancement, significantly increasing the thermal. RDEs make use of thermodynamic advantages of isochoric as opposed to isobaric combustion. Theorized to increase thermal efficiency by up to 7% [1], the RDE would have significant impact on reducing anthropogenic carbon emissions. In addition to efficiency gains, the RDE also provides mechanical simplicity and reduced size advantages compared to it’s traditional counterparts and PGC competition.

The Educational Value Of Modelling Complex Thermodynamic Systems With System Dynamics Software, Stephen Crown, Constantine Tarawneh Jan 2019

The Educational Value Of Modelling Complex Thermodynamic Systems With System Dynamics Software, Stephen Crown, Constantine Tarawneh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The solution of problems involving complex thermodynamic systems often occupies much of a students' time and can be a distraction from them developing a clear understanding of system components, interaction of subsystems, modelling simplifications and assumptions, and design optimization. Refocusing students on the fundamental concepts of thermal systems design and analysis is possible with the introduction of system modelling software that carries some of the load of repetitive calculation required for complex systems. Models of thermodynamic systems encountered in an advanced undergraduate thermodynamics course were developed by students (some provided to students) to solve homework problems of complex steam power …

Simulation To Fabrication—Understanding The Effect Of Niaucu Alloy Catalysts For Controlled Growth Of Graphene At Reduced Temperature, Huahan Zhan, Bin Jiang, Otto Zietz, Samuel Olson, Jun Jiao

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is a significant challenge to grow large-scale, high quality, monolayer graphene at low temperature for the applications in industry, especially for the complementary metal oxide semiconductor fabrication process. To overcome this difficulty, we simulated the decomposition of acetylene (C2H2) on (100) surfaces of primarily nickel (Ni) catalysts with small mol fractions of gold (Au) and copper (Cu), using a 4 × 4 × 4 periodic supercell model. Based on the calculation of the reaction energies to decompose the C-H or C≡C bonds on different catalyst surfaces, a differential energy is proposed to clearly scale the decomposition difficulties such that …

Development Of A Neural Network-Based Object Detection For Multirotor Target Tracking, Spencer Harwood Jan 2019

Development Of A Neural Network-Based Object Detection For Multirotor Target Tracking, Spencer Harwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have, for the past few decades, seen an increased popularity in industry and research centres. Despite this intense utilization by both markets there exists an active demand for the development of autonomous guidance, navigation, and control strategies. One need relates to the achievement of a high level of autonomy to identify and track a target object. An elective technique for this set of tasks is neural networks. In the development and study of these networks there is a distinct lack of substantive validation techniques to qualify network performances when implemented in a multirotor UAV. This thesis …

Static Load Bolted Joint Elastic Resilience Testing Methodology, Paul Melino Jan 2019

Static Load Bolted Joint Elastic Resilience Testing Methodology, Paul Melino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elastic resilience is the ratio of deformation over force an object experiences when under stress. Knowing the how much the bolt and clamped part deform under load is critical when determining fasteners for a bolted joint. VDI 2230 is the internationally recognized bolt sizing standard and contains the equations used to determine each of the bolted joint component’s resilience as well as values for embedment estimates based on component surface roughness. Embedment is the local plastic deformation due to uneven contact over the contact planes of a bolt-clamped interface (Bolt head to plate, plate to plate, plate to nut, and …

Introduction For The Special Issue On Beyond The Hypes Of Geospatial Big Data: Theories, Methods, Analytics, And Applications, Qianxing Wang, Allison Kealy, Shengjie Zhai

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

We live in the era of ‘Big Data’. In particular, Geospatial data, whether captured through remote sensors (e.g., satellite imagery) or generated from large-scale simulations (e.g., climate change models) have always been significantly large in size. Over the last decade however, advances in instrumentation and computation has seen the volume, variety, velocity, and veracity of this data increase exponentially. Of the 2.5 quintillion (1018) bytes of data that are generated on a daily basis across the globe, a large portion (arguably as much as 80%) is found to be geo-referenced. Therefore, this special issue is dedicated to the innovative theories, …

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing Jan 2019

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing

Master's Theses

Replacing a weight-bearing joint is accompanied by long procedures, even longer recovery times, and intensive monitoring. This burden increases after infection; a complication requiring revision surgeries and therefore extensive additional recovery time. Infection can present itself at any time during the process, making it hard to predict. Currently, a two-part revision surgery is completed by removing all infected tissue and implanting an antibiotic spacer. The spacer fills the joint gap and is removed prior to the revision total knee replacement. A revision total knee replacement follows the same procedure as the initial surgery. Not only is this detrimental to patient …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Stirling Engine Robust Foil Regenerator, Koji Yanaga Jan 2019

Experimental And Numerical Study Of The Stirling Engine Robust Foil Regenerator, Koji Yanaga

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The regenerator is located between the heat accepter and the heat rejecter of the Stirling engine. It works as a thermal energy storage component in the engine. Most of the regenerators are made of woven screen or random fiber. However, the flow going through the woven screen or random fiber is similar to the cylinders in crossflow which has flow separation. To achieve higher engine efficiency, it is required to design a regenerator which has higher convective heat transfer, lower pressure drops. Therefore, a parallel channel regenerator called a robust foil regenerator was designed and manufactured.

In this study, a …

Dynamic Discrepancy Reduced Order Modeling For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis Over Cobalt-Based Catalyst, Jose Miguel Bohorquez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Advances in carbon capture techniques and demands in alternative fuel sources have increased over the past couple of decades. The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) provides a viable way to produce hydrocarbons from natural gas, coal, CO2, or biomass. However, current comprehensive models for FTS encompass large number of reacting species, readsorption and conversion of primary products, surface intermediates, and coverage-dependent reaction rates. To accurately predict the products obtained through the process a reduced order model has been developed. By reducing the number of parameters of an existing comprehensive model, uncertainty is introduced. The uncertainty can be quantified by using …

Virtual Morphology As A Method Of Robotic Control, Conner Todd Castle Jan 2019

Virtual Morphology As A Method Of Robotic Control, Conner Todd Castle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis presents Virtual Morphology (VM), a method that explores a different perspective on the design of robot autonomy using inspiration from morphological computing and programmed computation. Morphological computation offers physical solutions that solve complex tasks, like robotic grasping of unknown objects, with relative ease. Unfortunately, these physical solutions are difficult to adjust post-development, and are usually designed to complete only one or a few specific tasks. Programmed computational approaches are more flexible because they can be implemented and adjusted through software, but unfortunately, these approaches can become rather complex as tasks become more difficult. This thesis explores the potential …
