Bone is the primary structural element of mammalian animals. It plays a critical role in support, strength, and resilience, and has been the subject of many investigations into its material properties. The high strain rate behavior of bone has remained relatively unexplored, however, and its properties under dynamic loads perpendicular to the diaphysis of the bone are somewhat poorly understood. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is applied to distinct data sets in order to characterize the propagation of error arising from basis truncation in the description of turbulence. Experimental data from stereo particle image velocimetry measurements in a wind turbine array and direct numerical simulation data from a fully developed channel flow are used to illustrate dependence of the anisotropy tensor invariants as a function of POD modes used in low-order descriptions. In all cases, ensembles of snapshots illuminate a variety of anisotropic states of turbulence. In the near wake of a model wind turbine, the turbulence field reflects the periodic …

The Fan Assessment Numeration System (FANS) is a measurement device for generating ventilation fan performance curves. Three different-sized FANS currently exist for assessing ventilation fans commonly used in poultry and livestock housing systems. All FANS consist of an array of anemometers inside an aluminum shroud that traverse the inlet or outlet of a ventilation fan. The FANS design has been updated several times since its inception and is currently in its fourth-generation (G4). Interferometric vibration sensors are widely used for ground vibration measurements where traditional contact sensors are not desired. Laser Doppler vibrometers (LDV) and digital speckle pattern interferometers are studied in this thesis. The working principle of laser Doppler vibrometry and digital shearography is described. The effect of vibration of the unconsolidated sand on the performance of both sensors is experimentally investigated.

Mathematical models have been developed to streamline and facilitate decision making activities, and among these, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) constitutes one of the most utilized multi-criteria decision analysis methods. This study examined consumer and professional grade handheld engines. Twenty-four consumer grade 50 hour Emissions Determination Period (EDP) trimmers and 24 professional grade 300 hour EDP backpack leaf blowers were run on four different ethanol fuel concentrations; E0, E10, E15, and E20. Six engines of each type were run on each of the fuel blends through their full EDP.

All engines were broken-in and adjusted to manufacturer specifications on E0. Then engines were emissions tested on E0 to provide a baseline and to determine the rich to lean order of the engines. Next, the leanest operating engine received E20 and …

Hybrid rockets are the combination of liquid and solid propellant systems. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is currently researching combining Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene (HTPB) and Hydroxyl Ammonium Nitrate (HAN) in preparation for conducting testing using an Air Force developed monopropellant known as AF-M315E as an oxidizer. A new system was developed to conduct this testing based in the Goddard Laboratory at UTEP. The incessant demand for fiber reinforced polymer composites, or FRPCs, in industrial applications which desire materials that possess high strength-to-weight ratios, generates a theory-to-practice void which must be filled with scientific research. In this Thesis, woven carbon/vinyl ester composites are studied under a wide spectrum of settings and conditions. The adverse effects of sea water environment and arctic temperatures on such mentioned composites are explored in the form of moisture uptake, impact on flexural modulus, strength and structural damage. Extreme environments associated with nuclear applications often results in degradation of the physical, mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of the materials. Tungsten (W) exhibits unique physical and mechanical properties, which makes tungsten a good candidate for nuclear applications; however, intrinsic W exhibits low fracture toughness at all temperatures in addition to a high ductile to brittle transition. In the present work, nanocrystalline W, W-Y and W-Mo alloys were nanoengineered for nuclear applications. A comprehensive statistical analysis of creep data is a difficult task because there are many layers of uncertainty for a given dataset. Sources of uncertainty are inherent in both the databases that provide data, and the data themselves.
