Combustion Kinetics Of Advanced Biofuels, Ghazal Barari
Combustion Kinetics Of Advanced Biofuels, Ghazal Barari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Use of biofuels, especially in automotive applications, is a growing trend due to their potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions from combustion. Ketones are a class of biofuel candidates which are produced from cellulose. However, ketones received rather scarce attention from the combustion community compared to other classes such as, alcohols, esters, and ethers. There is little knowledge on their combustion performance and pollutant generation. Hence their combustion chemistry needs to be investigated in detail. Diisopropyl ketone (DIPK) is a promising biofuel candidate, which is produced using endophytic fungal conversion. A detailed understanding of the combustion kinetics of the oxidation …
Modeling Phase Change Heat Transfer Of Liquid/Vapor Systems In Free/Porous Media, James Wilson
Modeling Phase Change Heat Transfer Of Liquid/Vapor Systems In Free/Porous Media, James Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Effective solvent extraction incorporating electromagnetic heating is a relatively new concept that relies on Radio Frequency heating and solvents to replace steam in current thermal processes for the purpose of extracting bitumen from oil rich sands. The work presented here will further the understanding of the near wellbore flow of this two phase system in order to better predict solvent vaporization dynamics and heat rates delivered to the pay zone. This numerical study details the aspects of phase change of immiscible, two component, liquid/vapor systems confined in porous media heated by electromagnetic radiation, approximated by a spatially dependent volumetric heat …
Large Eddy Simulations With A Tabulated Conditional Moment Closure Moment Closure Model For Turbulent Premixed Combustion With Heat Loss, Carlos Velez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Tabulated Premixed Conditional Moment Closure (T-PCMC) method has been shown to provide the capability to predict turbulent, premixed methane flames with detailed chemistry and reasonable run times in a RANS/URANS adiabatic environment. Here the premixed T-PCMC method is extended in a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) framework for non-adiabatic premixed flames, allowing heat loss to occur in the mixture before, during and after combustion. It is proposed that the LES framework is a more suitable representation for both chemical and turbulent scales in premixed combustion. By resolving the high energy turbulent scales and modeling the small scale turbulence, it is …
Multi-Row Film Cooling Boundary Layers, Greg Natsui
Multi-Row Film Cooling Boundary Layers, Greg Natsui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High fidelity measurements are necessary to validate existing and future turbulence models for the purpose of producing the next generation of more efficient gas turbines. The objective of the present study is to conduct several different measurements of multi-row film cooling arrays in order to better understand the physics involved with injection of coolant through multiple rows of discrete holes into a flat plate turbulent boundary layer. Adiabatic effectiveness distributions are measured for several multi-row film cooling geometries. The geometries are designed with two different hole spacings and two different hole types to yield four total geometries. One of the …

Coalescence-Induced Jumping Of Droplet: Inertia And Viscosity Effects, Samaneh Farokhirad, Jeffrey F. Morris, Taehun Lee
Publications and Research
The problem of coalescence-induced self-propelled jumping of droplet is studied using three-dimensional numerical simulation. The focus is on the effect of inertia and in particular the effect of air density on the behavior of the merged droplet during jumping. A lattice Boltzmann method is used for two identical, static micro-droplets coalescing on a homogeneous substrate with contact angle ranging from 0◦ to 180◦. The results reveal that the effect of air density is significant on detachment of the merged droplet from the substrate at the later stage of the jumping process; the larger the air density, the larger the jumping …
Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby
Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby
Theses and Dissertations
In the friction stir welding (FSW) process, tool stirring and synchronized movement of the weld materials along a pre-existing seam line causes thermal gradients and severe plastic deformation resulting in the bonding of the adjacent materials. For a given set of welding parameters, tool pin geometries (dimensions, shape) and vertical/helical features that dictate the material motion also have significant effects on process response variables during FSW. Among the primary process controlling parameters in FSW, tool pin geometry and feature vary multifariously in terms of shape, dimensions, feature insertion technique depending on the weld material and application of joint. The current …
Vibration Of Steel-Framed Floors Supporting Sensitive Equipment In Hospitals, Research Facilities, And Manufacturing Facilities, Di Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Floors have traditionally been designed only for strength and deflection serviceability. As technological advances have been made in medical, scientific and micro-electronics manufacturing, many types of equipment have become sensitive to vibration of the supporting floor. Thus, vibration serviceability has become a routinely evaluated limit state for floors supporting sensitive equipment. Equipment vibration tolerance limits are sometimes expressed as waveform peak acceleration, and are more often expressed as narrowband spectral acceleration, or one-third octave spectral velocity.
Current floor vibration prediction methods, such as those found in the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Guide 11, Floor Vibrations Due to Human …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This paper presents an introduction to fiber optic cable and the fiber optic communication system. An important phase in the supply of this new technology is to transport the fiber optic cable to the vicinity of service. Cable pulling and cable blowing - laminar flow; piston type - are the two main methods of installing fiber optic cable. Both methods of installation have limiting factors that need to be evaluated in order to perform a successful installation. The limiting factors for laminar type cable blowing are further discussed in this paper. A method was proposed to determine the forces - …
Cacti- And Shorebirds-Inspired Transports Of Liquid Drops And Two Related Fog Collectors, Xin Heng
Cacti- And Shorebirds-Inspired Transports Of Liquid Drops And Two Related Fog Collectors, Xin Heng
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Motivated by what has been used in cacti and shorebirds to directionally manipulate water drops, we have explored two approaches to guide the movement of liquid drops. Based on these approaches, in addition to separating oil from its mixture with water, we have further developed two fog collectors. The first fog collector has a configuration similar to its counterpart in a cactus. This collector includes a large ZnO wire and an array of small ZnO wires that are branched on the large wire. All these wires have conical shapes, whose diameters gradually increase from the tip to the root of …
On The Design Of A Nearly Constant-Force Modular Device Based On A Compliant Slider Mechanism, Krutika Karthik
On The Design Of A Nearly Constant-Force Modular Device Based On A Compliant Slider Mechanism, Krutika Karthik
Masters Theses
"Compliant mechanisms derive some or all of their mobility from the deflection of their flexible members. A pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) provides a simple and efficient way of modeling and analyzing large deflections in compliant mechanisms. In this work, a partially compliant slider mechanism, composed of rigid and compliant segments as well as rigid-body revolute and prismatic pairs, is considered. In recent works, such mechanisms have been dimensionally synthesized to produce substantially constant-force output over a finite range of input link displacement in an in-line PRBM of a compliant slider mechanism. In this thesis, the current practice of using partially compliant …

On The Dynamic Analysis Of Compliant Mechanisms Based On The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model, Andrew Christian
Masters Theses
"Compliant mechanisms derive some or all of their mobility from the deflection of flexible members. A pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) provides an elegant and simple way of modeling and analyzing traditionally nonlinear large-deflection problems pertaining to compliant mechanisms. In this work, several aspects pertainting to the dynamics of compliant mechanisms are considered. First, dynamic models are derived to predict not only the natural frequency of the large-deflection systems, but also the transient response, using the PRBM approach. A unique multi-stage damping model is developed to determine the transient response in free vibration. Recent works have neglected to consider the transient response …

Compact Deployable Antenna For Cubesat Units, Sarah Bolton, Dominic Doty, Peter Rivera
Mechanical Engineering
CubeSats are an appealing platform for space exploration due to their low build and launch costs. Due to their small size, communication rates are often severely limited, preventing missions beyond low earth orbit. A low cost, high gain, high frequency antenna is needed to extend the capabilities of CubeSats.
The goal of the project was to design and build an axisymmetric parabolic antenna that could be deployed from a 10cm x 10cm x 15cm (1.5U) volume and operate at Ka band frequencies. The design selected consisted of an expanding perimeter truss supporting a tensioned mesh reflector. The perimeter truss was …

Thermal analysis was required in order to aid in the design and testing of a radiation tolerant computing (RTC) system using a radiation sensor. During development of the system, different test beds were employed in order to characterize the radiation sensor and its supporting electronic systems. The most common preliminary tests are high altitude balloon tests which allow the sensor to experience cosmic radiation at high altitudes, consistent with space flight operations. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to evaluate primary system architecture, system support structures, and the flight payload in order to determine if the system …

Magnus Effect In Duct Flow, Jesse S. Batko, Cameron W. Clarke, Kenneth W. Smith Jr.
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The following research paper details the preliminary research carried out by this team. The project was originally conceived to determine if Magnus Lift could be utilized in an unconventional way to assist rockets during takeoff. Several conceptual designs were proposed, but the idea was scrapped when it became apparent that the team would not be able to generate the desired lift without inducing significant amounts of drag and additional weight on a rocket. Instead, the team focused on researching an interesting topic that hasn’t been previously explored: Magnus lift on a cylinder within a duct.
An experimental procedure that could …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study Of Single Dna Nucleotides Transport Through Nanoslits, Kai Xia
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study Of Single Dna Nucleotides Transport Through Nanoslits, Kai Xia
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
There is potential for flight time based DNA sequencing involving disassembly into individual nucleotides which would pass through a nanochannel with 2 or more detectors. Molecular dynamics simulation of electrophoretic motion of single DNA nucleotides through 3 nm wide hydrophobic slits was performed. Electric field strength (E) varied from 0.0 to 0.6 V/nm. Slit walls were smooth or had a roughness similar to nucleotide size. Multiple nucleotide-wall adsorptions occurred. The electric field did not influence the nucleotide adsorption and desorption mechanism for E ¡Ü 0.1 V/nm, but influenced nucleotide orientation relative to the field direction. The nucleotide-wall interactions differed due …

Cerebral vasculature is a complex network that circulates blood through the brain. However, the role of this networking effect in brain dynamics has seldom been inspected. This work is to study the effects of blood vessel networks on dynamic responses of the brain under blast loading. Voronoi tessellations were implemented to represent the network of blood vessels in the brain. The brain dynamics in terms of maximumprincipal strain (MPS), shear strain (SS), and intracranial pressure (ICP) weremonitored and compared. Results show that blood vessel networks significantly affected brain responses. The increased MPS and SS were observed within the brain embedded with …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
In situ longitudinal (axial) pre-stretch (LPS) plays a fundamental role in the mechanics of the femoropopliteal artery (FPA). It conserves energy during pulsation and prevents buckling of the artery during limb movement. We investigated how LPS is affected by demographics and risk factors, and how these patient characteristics associate with the structural and physiologic features of the FPA. LPS was measured in n=148 fresh human FPAs (14–80 years old). Mechanical properties were characterized with biaxial extension and histopathological characteristics were quantified with Verhoeff-Van Gieson Staining. Constitutive modeling was used to calculate physiological stresses and stretches which were then analyzed …

Phase Transformation And Magnetic Properties Of Rapidly Solidified Mn-Al-C Alloys Modified With Zr, Yunlong Geng, Micheal J. Lucis, Pamela Rasmussen, Jeffrey E. Shield
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Mn54-xAl43C3Zrx (x=1, 3) alloys were prepared by rapid solidification followed by heat treatment to produce the ferromagnetic s phase. The substitution of Zr for Mn in the structure resulted in an increase of the saturation magnetization (Ms) compared to that of Mn54-xAl43C3. While the highest Ms (12861 emu/g) was obtained in Mn54-xAl43C3Zr1, the coercivity was also improved to 1.62 kOe, compared to 1.25 kOe for Mn54-xAl43C3. To further improve the coercivity through grain …

Extracting Continuum-Like Deformation And Stress From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lili Zhang, John Jasa, George Gazonas, Antoine Jerusalem, Mehrdad Negahban
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We present methods that use results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to construct continuum parameters, such as deformation gradient and Cauchy stress, from all or any part of an MD system. These parameters are based on the idea of minimizing the difference between MD measures for deformation and traction and their continuum counterparts. The procedures should be applicable to non-equilibrium and inhomogeneous systems, and to any part of a system, such as a polymer chain. The resulting procedures provide methods to obtain first and higher order deformation gradients associated with any subset of the MD system, and associated expressions for …

Rigidly Foldable Origami Twists, Thomas A. Evans, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell
Faculty Publications
Rigid foldability is an important characteristic of origami structures that becomes significant with non-paper materials. A rigidly foldable origami tessellation is one where the sectors remain rigid and all deflection occurs at the crease lines. Many rigidly foldable patterns have only one degree of freedom, making them potentially useful for deployable structures. Methods have been developed to construct rigidly foldable origami tessellations using materials with finite thickness based on zero-thickness rigidly foldable patterns. [Tachi 11].
Origami methods have been considered for application in deployable structures such as solar panels [Miura 85] [Zirbel et al. 13] and sterile shrouds [Francis et …

In this research, the dynamic response and energy absorption characteristics of four different types of commercially available glass have been investigated experimentally. Soda Lime, Starphire, Borosilicate, and Fused Silica were characterized using a Dynatup 8250 drop weight impact test system, and a modified Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). In the low-velocity punch-shear experiment, similar trend has been observed for all glass types, and Starphire and Borosilicate demonstrated the highest total energy absorption. High strain-rate SHPB compression tests were carried out on cylindrical glass samples at two different strain-rates. Borosilicate shohigher compressive strength and energy absorption in comparison to the other …
High Definition 3d Printing – Comparing Sla And Fdm Printing Technologies, Tyler Finnes
High Definition 3d Printing – Comparing Sla And Fdm Printing Technologies, Tyler Finnes
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
For consumer level additive manufacturing, there are currently two main methods to 3D print objects: Stereo lithography and Fused Deposition Modeling. Both processes add material, layer by layer, to create objects. Stereo lithography (SLA) uses a UV light source to selectively cure resin while Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) extrudes semi-liquid plastic in a specific layout to create objects. As with most technologies, both styles of printing have advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage of SLA 3D printing is very high resolution. SLA 3D printing can produce objects with more than double the resolution of FDM printers. The mUVe 3D SLA …

The Study Of Ionization In A Military, Heavy-Duty, Diesel Engine, Steven Zielinski
Wayne State University Theses
This thesis is an investigation of ionization in a military, heavy-duty, diesel engine. Ionization is a phenomenon which occurs in both spark-ignited and diesel engines. During the reactions of combustion, charged molecules and electrons are produced. The current produced, ion current, from these charges can be measured. The measurement of ion current can serve as an in-cylinder diagnostic for closed-loop engine control strategies. In this work, a literature review was performed to survey previous work as it pertains to ionization in diesel engines. In addition, a detailed description and comparison of the HEUI injection system was made to HPCR. This …

Eigenvector Pruning Method For High Resolution Beamforming, Jorge E. Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper introduces an eigenvector pruning algorithm for the estimation of the signal-plus-interference eigenspace, required as a preliminary step to subspace beamforming. The proposed method considers large-aperture passive array configurations operating in environments with multiple maneuvering targets in background noise, in which the available data for estimation of sample covariances and eigenvectors are limited. Based on statistical properties of scalar products between deterministic and complex random vectors, this work defines a statistically justified threshold to identify target-related features embedded in the sample eigenvectors, leading to an estimator for the signal-bearing eigenspace. It is shown that data projection into this signal …
