Thermal Analysis Of High Pressure Micro Plasma Discharge, Mostafa Mobli Aug 2014

Thermal Analysis Of High Pressure Micro Plasma Discharge, Mostafa Mobli

Theses and Dissertations

High pressure micro plasma discharge has been at the center of interest in recent years, because of their vast applications, ease of access and cost efficiency. This attributes to atmospheric discharges that are generated in ambient conditions and therefore can be readily applicable to everyday use. The absence of vacuum makes these high pressure discharges to be inexpensive to operate. Despite the ease of operation, the high pressure is a source of enhanced gas heating as the gas temperature cannot be controlled by diffusion alone. Gas heating is therefore an important factor when it comes to the simulation of high …

Implementing Dubins Airplane Paths On Fixed-Wing Uavs, Timothy Mclain, Randall W. Beard, Mark Owen

Faculty Publications

A well-known path-planning technique for mobile robots or planar aerial vehicles is to use Dubins paths, which are minimum-distance paths between two configurations subject to the constraints of the Dubins car model. An extension of this method to a three-dimensional Dubins airplane model has recently been proposed. This chapter builds on that work showing a complete architecture for implementing Dubins airplane paths on small fixed-wing UAVs. The existing Dubins airplane model is modified to be more consistent with the kinematics of a fixed-wing aircraft. The chapter then shows how a recently proposed vector-field method can be used to design a …

Dielectric Properties Of Composite Materials During Damage Accumulation And Fracture, Md. Rassel Raihan

Theses and Dissertations

Fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite materials have many unique properties and their high performance makes them available to use in many advanced technologies i.e. aerospace, microelectronics, and energy storage. There is a correlation that exists between the long term behavior of those materials under combined mechanical, thermal, and electrical fields, and the functional properties and characteristics of the composite materials that requires a fundamental understanding of the material state changes caused by deformation and damage accumulation. This will ultimately lead, for example, to the design and synthesis of optimal multifunctional material systems. Composite materials are heterogeneous and the complex morphology …

Plant-Biomimetic Hydrogel Actuators: Creating Movement In Hydrogels Through The Study Of Plants, Christen Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations

Plants are sessile organisms that have developed methods of movement to respond to environmental stimuli. Some of the approaches feature the unequal expansion of cells and controlling deformation direction through fibers under swelling and drying. Hydrogels are three dimensional polymer networks that have the capacity for large volume changes due their affinity for water and can be tough and/or stimuli-responsive. In this paper, three preliminary plant-biomimetic hydrogel actuator designs are discussed and tested from wet to dry. The first actuator design, termed a 1%-0.1% bilayer, features two layers of different swelling and drying rates due to differences in cross-linking density. …

Theses and Dissertations

Catalysts in the electrodes of polymer electrolyte cells serve a critical function in reactions which can be used to either generate electrical energy from chemical fuels or convert electrical energy into chemicals. For low temperature electrochemical fuel cells, platinum is often utilized for its exceptional catalytic activities towards hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions of the anode and cathode, respectively. However, the limited supply of platinum and high demand result in prohibitive costs plaguing commercialization of this technology. Therefore, minimal amounts of the catalyst should be used to achieve the maximum output to reduce expenses. Electrochemical behavior is governed by …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Heterogeneous (nano) composites, manufactured by the densification of variously sized grains, represent an important and ubiquitous class of technologically relevant materials. Typical grain sizes in such materials range from macroscopic to a few nanometers. The morphology exhibited by such disordered materials is complex and intricately connected with its thermal and electrical transport properties. It is important to quantify the geometric features of these materials and simulate the fabrication process. Additionally, granular materials exhibit complex structural and mechanical properties that crucially govern their reliability during industrial use. In this work, we simulate the densification of soft deformable grains from a low-density …

Porphyrin Interaction With Dna-Based Carbon Nanotubes And Regeneration For Light Harvesting, Sawyer E. Morgan, Hanyu Zhang, Jong Hyun Choi

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Limitations to current solar cells include the high cost of pure silicon and poor current transfer within cells. An emerging alternative is single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which when combined with DNA and porphyrin chromophores can generate a current when absorbing light. We sought to find a chromophore and conditions that would promote bonding to the SWCNTs and improve light harvesting, while being able to regenerate on the film after being damaged. This was experimentally tested by first making SWCNT films on conducting glass slides. These were then functionalized in solutions of chromophore and spectra were measured to determine the bonding …

Development Of Integration Software For Multiple Inkjet Functionalization Systems, Jieyu Lu, J. William Boley, George T.-C. Chiu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Inkjet printing is widely used in functional product manufacturing. Performing a printing task requires communication and synchronization among multiple subsystems (e.g. motion and drop ejection), which introduces complexity in the overall printing system. A user interface has been developed, which enables users to input printing parameters and patterns for printing functional materials. The interface then sends commands to the controllers that execute the printing process. The software can also be expanded to carry out standard experiments for functional printing research and characterization. Moreover, the software is transferable to multiple systems. One application explored using the software is drug anti- counterfeiting …

Motion Control Of Robotic Arm With Command Shaping Method, Yumeng Wu, Peter H. Meckl, Alok Agrawal

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In the manufacturing industry, lots of rapid point-to-point motion is required while the residual vibration is unfavorable. Residual vibrations caused by flexible elements are limiting the performance of mechanical system, especially when the system needs to make rapid point-to-point motion. As proved in earlier studies, avoiding natural frequencies of the mechanical system reduces the residual vibrations. This work is based on a non-linear, two-link flexible jointed robot with configuration dependent resonance. Command shaping method consisting different combinations of base functions and weighting factors are compared in this work. The compatibility of command shaping with classical feedback control structure allows a …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Gasification of biomass has the potential to provide a carbon-negative source of liquid fuels. The current limited use of gasification is due in part to the high temperatures necessary to achieve high conversion levels. These temperatures can be lowered by the use of catalysts, but the mechanisms by which catalysts affect the reaction rate are not fully understood. Here, the structural component of potassium carbonate’s role in the gasification process was examined. Samples of pinewood sawdust were impregnated with potassium carbonate, then pyrolyzed with N2 in a fixed bed reactor at 750°C (heater thermocouple reading). Half of the char was …

Plasma-induced combustion (PIC) has been shown to improve the reliability, efficiency, and delay time of ignition in flight systems like augmentors and scramjets. These high-velocity systems are mostly used in military applications, and improvement may help commercial viability. To understand this chemical process, the concentration of radicals, particularly H radicals, must be tracked through the flame using laser diagnostics. This requires a steady source of plasma-assisted combustion to be secured and well-understood. A plasma torch flowing partially premixed air and methane was installed and successfully operated, and preliminary testing was carried out. Primarily it was observed that PIC created stable …

Most additive manufacturing processes are layer-by-layer deposition, thus its mechanical properties could be very different than those made from traditional manufacturing processes. This paper summarizes a mini-tensile testing methodology for additive manufacturing. Research concerning the tensile testing of metallic material has been conducted and test methods have been defined. It encompasses the methods for determination of yield strength, yield point elongation, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area. The study of positional variation and cooling-rate dependency in case of additive manufacturing proves to be expensive and time consuming with the full-size test specimens. Thus, this paper discussed a technique for …
