Qualifying Composition Dependent P And N Self-Doping In Ch3Nh3Pbi3, Qi Wang, Yuchuan Shao, Haipeng Xie, Lu Lyu, Xiaoliang Liu, Yongli Gao, Jinsong Huang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report the observation of self-doping in perovskite. CH3NH3PbI3 was found to be either n- or p-doped by changing the ratio of methylammonium halide (MAI) and lead iodine (PbI2) which are the two precursors for perovskite formation. MAI-rich and PbI2-rich perovskite films are p and n self-doped, respectively. Thermal annealing can convert the p-type perovskite to n-type by removing MAI. The carrier concentration varied as much as six orders of magnitude. A clear correlation between doping level and device performance was also observed.

Predictive Modeling Of Coupled Multi-Physics Systems: Ii. Illustrative Application To Reactor Physics, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Madalina Corina Badea

Faculty Publications

This work presents paradigm applications to reactor physics of the innovative mathematical methodology for "predictive modeling of coupled multi-physics systems (PMCMPS)" developed by Cacuci (2014). This methodology enables the assimilation of experimental and computational information and computes optimally predicted responses and model parameters with reduced predicted uncertainties, taking fully into account the coupling terms between the multi-physics systems, but using only the computational resources that would be needed to perform predictive modeling on each system separately. The paradigm examples presented in this work are based on a simple neutron diffusion model, chosen so as to enable closed-form solutions with clear …

The challenge of creating impactful and long-lasting service opportunities for engineering students lies in how to best implement programs in the unique setting of each academic institution. This paper presents a critical reflection of two different models of learning through service opportunities for engineering students that have evolved over the past six years at Loyola Marymount University. In particular, we highlight the history and lessons learned from four different case studies involving both extra-curricular international service projects and course-based service-learning opportunities for engineering students. Overall lessons learned that emerged from our experience include: 1) Students should receive course credit for …

Bio-Inspired Flow Sensing For Underwater Guidance And Navigation, Levi Devries Jan 2014

Bio-Inspired Flow Sensing For Underwater Guidance And Navigation, Levi Devries

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Stream-dwelling fish and aquatic mammals have an innate ability to navigate often-tumultuous environments with impressive precision, a highly desirable trait for underwater vehicle applications. For example, trout use their lateral line to sense vortices shed by an upstream obstacle and slalom between the vortices to reduce energy expenditure compared to free-stream swimming [3]. Moreover, harbor seals can use their whiskers to follow the trail of flow disturbances created in the wake of an object that has passed minutes before [4]. Recent developments in materials science have produced sensors that can measure local flow velocity similar to seal whiskers, and integration …

The optimal design of geothermal power plants across the entire spectrum of meaningful geothermal brine temperatures and climates is investigated, while accounting for vital real-world constraints that are typically ignored in the existing literature. The constrained design space of both double-flash and binary geothermal power plants is visualized, and it is seen that inclusion of real-world constraints is vital to determining the optimal feasible design of a geothermal power plant. The effect of varying condenser temperature on optimum plant performance and optimal design specifications is analyzed. It is shown that condenser temperature has a significant effect on optimal plant design …

A Practical Tool For The Determination Of Surface Stresses In Railroad Bearings With Different Contact Geometries And Load Conditions Using Finite Element Analysis, Michael A. Mason Jan 2014

A Practical Tool For The Determination Of Surface Stresses In Railroad Bearings With Different Contact Geometries And Load Conditions Using Finite Element Analysis, Michael A. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

The connection between contact geometry and fatigue in tapered roller bearings utilized in the railroad environment is still of interest. Roller bearings for railroad applications are typically precision ground with crowned contact geometries to prevent edge loading of components. This normally results in completely elastic Hertzian contact stresses under standard railcar loads. However, under extreme load conditions, detrimental edge loading has been known to occur. It is proposed to develop a tool, using finite element analysis, that can be utilized to optimize complex raceway crown geometries for severe applications.

A successful implementation of this tool is presented and validated using …

Relating Microstructure To Process Variables In Beam-Based Additive Manufacturing Of Inconel 718, John Ryan Thompson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The advancement of laser or electron beam-based additive manufacturing requires the ability to control solidification microstructure. Previous work combined analytical point source solutions and nonlinear thermal finite element analysis (FEA) to explore the effects of deposition process variables on Ti-6Al-4V solidification microstructure. The current work seeks to extend the approach to Inconel 718, with the addition of Cellular Automaton-Finite Element (CAFE) models. Numerical data from finite element results are extracted in order to calculate accurate melt pool geometry, thus leading to corresponding cooling rates and thermal gradients. The CAFE models are used to simulate grain grown and nucleation, providing a …

Fatigue Based Structural Design Exploration Via Engineering Data Analytics, Hao Li

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In manufacturing industry, a successful machine development requires the durability of structure components to meet fatigue life targets. The typical way to obtain fatigue design loads for conceptual design exploration is based on hand calculations or historical data to capture envelopes of expected system responses, which may not guarantee to capture actual damaging loads. In this study, a new approach is developed to extract a fatigue design load set directly from measured load data for a conceptual design exploration. The proposed framework integrates the techniques from data analytics and physics based engineering mechanics to amplify and detect fundamental damaging load …

Stochastic Modeling Of Geometric Mistuning And Application To Fleet Response Prediction, Emily Brooke Henry Jan 2014

Stochastic Modeling Of Geometric Mistuning And Application To Fleet Response Prediction, Emily Brooke Henry

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

An improved spatial statistical approach and probabilistic prediction method for mistuned integrally bladed rotors is proposed and validated with a large population of rotors. Prior work utilized blade-alone principal component analysis to model spatial variation arising from geometric deviations contributing to forced response mistuning amplification. Often, these studies considered a single rotor measured by contact probe coordinate measurement machines to assess the predictive capabilities of spatial statistics through principal component analysis. The validity of the approach has not yet been demonstrated on a large population of mistuned rotors representative of operating fleets, a shortcoming addressed in this work. Furthermore, this …

Agriculture is a significant measure of an economy for a number of countries in the world. Currently, the agriculture sector relies heavily on conventional sources of energy for irrigation and other purposes. When, considering factors such as increasing costs of fossil fuels and extending new power lines, especially to remote locations where grid electricity is either inaccessible or expensive, a solar PV (photovoltaic) irrigation system can be an effective choice for irrigating farmland. Solar power eliminates the need to run electrical power lines to remote agriculture locations, which quickly turns the monetary equation in favor of solar irrigation over grid-powered …

Polymer Aggregation Correlated Transition From Schottky-Junction To Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells, Bin Yang, Zhengguo Xiao, Jinsong Huang Jan 2014

Polymer Aggregation Correlated Transition From Schottky-Junction To Bulk Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells, Bin Yang, Zhengguo Xiao, Jinsong Huang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The fullerene-based organic Schottky-junction solar cells have recently attracted intensive research interest because of their unique electrical performance, such as significant photocurrent generation from excitons created in fullerenes and large open-circuit voltage (VOC) output induced by high Schottky-barrier height between the anode and the fullerene acceptor. This manuscript reports another remarkably appealing advantage that the fullerene-based Schottky-junction solar cells are more stable than the bulk heterojunction counterparts. The better stability is likely due to mitigative polymer photo-oxidation and/or little morphological change of active film in the aged Schottky-junction devices. The transition from Schottky-junction to bulk heterojunction appears at …

Phase Transitions In Mechanically Milled Mn-Al-C Permanent Magnets, Michael J. Lucis, Timothy E. Prost, Xiujuan Jiang, Meiyu Wang, Jeffrey E. Shield

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Mn-Al powders were prepared by rapid solidification followed by high-energy mechanical milling. The rapid solidification resulted in single-phase ε. The milling was performed in both the ε phase and the τ phase, with the τ-phase formation accomplished through a heat treatment at 500 °C for 10 min. For the ε-milled samples, the conversion of the ε to the τ phase was accomplished after milling via the same heat treatment. Mechanical milling induced a significant increase in coercivity in both cases, reaching 4.5 kOe and 4.1 kOe, respectively, followed by a decrease upon further milling. The increase in coercivity was the …

Biomechanical Strain As A Trigger For Pore Formation In Schlemm’S Canal Endothelial Cells, Sietse T. Braakman, Ryan M. Pedrigi, A. Thomas Read, James A. E. Smith, W. Daniel Stamer, C. Ross Ethier, Darryl R. Overby

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The bulk of aqueous humor passing through the conventional outflow pathway must cross the inner wall endothelium of Schlemm’s canal (SC), likely through micron-sized transendothelial pores. SC pore density is reduced in glaucoma, possibly contributing to obstructed aqueous humor outflow and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Little is known about the mechanisms of pore formation; however, pores are often observed near dome-like cellular outpouchings known as giant vacuoles (GVs) where significant biomechanical strain acts on SC cells. We hypothesize that biomechanical strain triggers pore formation in SC cells. To test this hypothesis, primary human SC cells were isolated from three non-glaucomatous …

Braakman, Ritika Gupta, Kristin M. Perkumas, Joesph M. Sherwood, Amir Vahabikashi, Quynh Dang, Jae Hun Kim, C. Ross Ethier, W. Daniel Stamer, Jeffrey J. Fredberg, Mark Johnson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Increased flow resistance is responsible for the elevated intraocular pressure characteristic of glaucoma, but the cause of this resistance increase is not known. We tested the hypothesis that altered biomechanical behavior of Schlemm’s canal (SC) cells contributes to this dysfunction. We used atomic force microscopy, optical magnetic twisting cytometry, and a unique cell perfusion apparatus to examine cultured endothelial cells isolated from the inner wall of SC of healthy and glaucomatous human eyes. Here we establish the existence of a reduced tendency for pore formation in the glaucomatous SC cell—likely accounting for increased outflow resistance—that positively correlates with elevated subcortical …

Arising Applications Of Ferroelectric Materials In Photovoltaic Devices, Yongbo Yuan, Zhengguo Xiao, Bin Yang, Jinsong Huang Jan 2014

Arising Applications Of Ferroelectric Materials In Photovoltaic Devices, Yongbo Yuan, Zhengguo Xiao, Bin Yang, Jinsong Huang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The ferroelectric-photovoltaic (FE-PV) device, in which a homogeneous ferroelectric material is used as a light absorbing layer, has been investigated during the past several decades with numerous ferroelectric oxides. The FE-PV effect is distinctly different from the typical photovoltaic (PV) effect in semiconductor p–n junctions in that the polarization electric field is the driving force for the photocurrent in FE-PV devices. In addition, the anomalous photovoltaic effect, in which the voltage output along the polarization direction can be significantly larger than the bandgap of the ferroelectric materials, has been frequently observed in FE-PV devices. However, a big challenge faced by …

Extracting Continuum-Like Deformation And Stress From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lili Zhang, John Jasa, George Gazonas, Antoine Jerusalem, Mehrdad Negahban Jan 2014

Extracting Continuum-Like Deformation And Stress From Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lili Zhang, John Jasa, George Gazonas, Antoine Jerusalem, Mehrdad Negahban

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We present methods that use results from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to construct continuum parameters, such as deformation gradient and Cauchy stress, from all or any part of an MD system. These parameters are based on the idea of minimizing the difference between MD measures for deformation and traction and their continuum counterparts. The procedures should be applicable to non-equilibrium and inhomogeneous systems, and to any part of a system, such as a polymer chain. The resulting procedures provide methods to obtain first and higher order deformation gradients associated with any subset of the MD system, and associated expressions for …

Comparison Of Magnetic Probe Calibration At Nano And Millitesla Magnitudes, Ryan A. Pahl, Joshua L. Rovey, David Pommerenke

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Magnetic field probes are invaluable diagnostics for pulsed inductive plasma devices where field magnitudes on the order of tenths of tesla or larger are common. Typical methods of providing a broadband calibration of Ḃ probes involve either a Helmholtz coil driven by a function generator or a network analyzer. Both calibration methods typically produce field magnitudes of tens of microtesla or less, at least three and as many as six orders of magnitude lower than their intended use. This calibration factor is then assumed constant regardless of magnetic field magnitude and the effects of experimental setup are ignored. This work …

Electrospinning is a widely applicable technique that generates non-woven fibers in the micro and nano range. In this project two of its applications are highlighted namely filtration media and enhancement of wettability. The first project demonstrates that electrospinning can be used to produce new fiber filtration media with controlled microstructure. The bimodal and unimodal orthogonal and random filters were made and characterized against their filtration efficiency and pressure drop. Figure of Merit (FOM) was also calculated and discussed. It is shown that the FOM increases when the electrospun fibers are arranged into alternating layers of aligned course and fine fibers. …

Ambulatory Extracorporeal Arterioveous Co2 Removal Via Subclavian Vessels, Alejandra Macias, Alvaro Rojas-Pena Jan 2014

Ambulatory Extracorporeal Arterioveous Co2 Removal Via Subclavian Vessels, Alejandra Macias, Alvaro Rojas-Pena

McNair Poster Presentations

Lung transplantation is the last recourse for patients with severe respiratory failure. However, transplantable lungs do not keep up with the demand, and 15.4% of patients die awaiting transplant. An alternative therapy is extracorporeal life support (ECLS), which uses a pump and an oxygenator to serve as a bridge to transplant. However, this technology limits ambulation and requires ICU care. This novel study implements pumpless arteriovenous (AV) ECLS technology to remove CO2 via the subclavian vessels, providing respiratory support and hypercapnia (excessive CO2 retention) sympton relief for patients while allowing ambulation.
