Autonomous Soaring Using Real-Time Wind Estimation, Mark J. Cutler, Dr. Timothy Mclain
Autonomous Soaring Using Real-Time Wind Estimation, Mark J. Cutler, Dr. Timothy Mclain
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are obtaining increasing utilization in many applications. Their small size (0.5-4m wingspan) allows them to fly close to the ground, providing useful observation and tracking data. This small size, however, comes at the expense of flight time. As UAV size decreases, the amount of stored energy (electrical or chemical) the UAV is able to carry also decreases. If long flight times are to be obtained with a small UAV, other energy sources must be exploited. Naturally occurring atmospheric phenomena provide one such potential energy source.

Dynamic Loading On Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blades, Christopher Brinkerhoff, Julie Vanderhoff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Currently, there is much interest involving technologies dealing with clean and renewable energy sources. The current goal in the United States is to produce 20% of its electrical needs by wind power by the year 2030. Wind energy is seen as a viable option for further research because of its low carbon footprint and virtually limitless supply of wind, but in order for it to be economically viable, there are certain aspects of wind technology that need improvement.
Economic And Environmental Justification Of A Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery System, John Christiansen, Dr. Matthew Jones
Economic And Environmental Justification Of A Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery System, John Christiansen, Dr. Matthew Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In recent years, the concepts of energy, energy production, effects of energy consumption on the environment, and sustainable development have become increasingly significant as members of society become more aware of their level of energy consumption. However, in energy production for home, commercial, or industrial use, up to 60 percent of the chemical energy potential (in the form of fossil or other fuels) is lost in the form of waste heat. In other words, when fossil or other fuels are burned, only 30 to 40 percent of the potential chemical energy is actually harnessed and converted into useful electricity! This …
Vision-Based Guidance For Air-To-Air Tracking And Rendezvous Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Joseph Walter Nichols
Vision-Based Guidance For Air-To-Air Tracking And Rendezvous Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Joseph Walter Nichols
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops the visual pursuit method for air-to-air tracking and rendezvous of unmanned aircraft systems. It also shows the development of vector-field and proportional-integral methods for controlling UAS flight in formation with other aircraft. The visual pursuit method is a nonlinear guidance method that uses vision-based line of sight angles as inputs to the algorithm that produces pitch rate, bank angle and airspeed commands for the autopilot to use in aircraft control. The method is shown to be convergent about the center of the camera image frame and to be stable in the sense of Lyapunov. In the lateral …

Development/Ballistics Testing Of Lightweight Sandwich-Composite Body Armor, Brian Spencer, Dr. Anton Bowden
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Body armor is one of the most important tools used in the protection of soldiers and other armed forces around the world. Although the current style of armor, using Kevlar fiber and ceramic inserts, is generally effective, it is bulky and heavy and can cause overheating and lack of mobility. Our research attempts to remedy these issues by using shear-thickening fluid (STF) impregnated Kevlar XP combined with corrugated plastic to create and test lighter, more effective body armor.
Critical Component Selection For Implementing Barriers To Reverse Engineering, Shane K. Curtis, Dr. Christopher Mattson
Critical Component Selection For Implementing Barriers To Reverse Engineering, Shane K. Curtis, Dr. Christopher Mattson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Reverse engineering is a prominent design strategy in industry, employed by many to uncover the enabling technologies of innovative products. Unfortunately, there is little motivation for original designers to create new products if competitors can reverse engineer these products and reproduce them at a lower development cost. One solution to this problem involves the incorporation of barriers to reverse engineering into products during the design process. These barriers not only increase the cost of reverse engineering but can also improve product performance with only a small increase in manufacturing or development time.

Geometric And Pattern Recognition Combined Algorithms Applied To Digital Image Processing In Aerial Search And Rescue Applications, Jamil Efren Anaguano Correa
Geometric And Pattern Recognition Combined Algorithms Applied To Digital Image Processing In Aerial Search And Rescue Applications, Jamil Efren Anaguano Correa
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The difficult task of generating an automated target detection system from aerial imagery can be achieved through different approaches. However, the robustness of any machine vision system lays on the implementation of vision algorithms. By combining geometric and pattern recognition algorithms, a more effective machine vision scheme is developed. Three modules-Color Identification (CIM), Color Matching (CMM), and Pattern Recognition (PRM)- work as main filters to process images and predict the location of targets based on a set templates. Multiple target detection is also accomplished by implementing a hide and seek method where all matching objects are scanned individually and isolated …
Analysis Of Connecting Rod Bearing Design Trends Using A Mode-Based Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Model, Travis M. Blais
Analysis Of Connecting Rod Bearing Design Trends Using A Mode-Based Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Model, Travis M. Blais
Theses
Available design trends for big end connecting rod bearings utilize widely adopted rapid methods for prediction of minimum film thickness due to their superior speed and ease of use. However, they impose unrealistic assumptions such as surface rigidity, which could compromise the accuracy of results. The significance of structural elasticity and updated models was investigated using a mode based elastohydrodynamic lubrication model which includes body forces, mass conserving cavitation, and surface roughness. Eight physical connecting rods were modeled using finite element methods and simulated over a variety of conditions, varying engine speed, bearing clearance, and oil viscosity. The results show …

Workshop A - Implementing The "Design Your Process Of Becoming A World Class Engineering Student" Project, Steffen Peuker, Raymond B. Landis
Mechanical Engineering
Many students come into an engineering program lacking a strong commitment to stay in an engineering program and to graduate with an engineering degree. For students to accomplish the challenging goal of graduating in engineering requires a strong commitment, and behaviors and attitudes to follow through that commitment. To strengthen the commitment of the freshman engineering students an innovative project has been developed. The project challenges students to develop their process to become a "World-Class Engineering Student". Having freshman engineering students design their individually tailored learning process as part of a semester long project in the setting of a student …
Implementing Team Based Learning In Freshmen Engineering Courses, Steffen Peuker, Jennifer Peuker
Implementing Team Based Learning In Freshmen Engineering Courses, Steffen Peuker, Jennifer Peuker
Mechanical Engineering
Team Based Learning (TBL) is a specific pedagogical tool that emphasizes collaborative learning. Oftentimes TBL is confused with group activities and other active learning strategies involving student teams. TBL is distinct because it follows a prescribed sequence of individual work and group work, and includes immediate feedback as well as peer evaluation. TBL is widely used in medical, pharmacy and nursing schools and the use of TBL in engineering education is growing. The advantages of using TBL in the class room include: (1) students are held accountable for individual (pre-class) and group (in-class) work. (2) The responsibility for learning shifts …

Propagation Of Thermo-Mechanical Waves In Deforming Nonlinear Viscoelastic Bodies, Lili Zhang
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work studies the propagation of thermo-mechanical disturbances in bodies made of viscoelastic materials that might already be loaded such that they are undergoing large inhomogeneous time varying deformations. In the process of this study we develop the general equations governing the thermo-mechanical motion of such disturbances and ones for internally constrained systems, provide the general structure of the solution, match the solution to existing results for the special case of time harmonic plane waves in elastic bodies and in viscoelastic bodies under constant homogenous loading, and consider some special applications.
The results of this work should have applications in …
Development Of A Sense And Avoid System For Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Robert Andrew Klaus
Development Of A Sense And Avoid System For Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Robert Andrew Klaus
Theses and Dissertations
Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) represent the future of modern aviation. Over the past 10 years their use abroad by the military has become commonplace for surveillance and combat. Unfortunately, their use at home has been far more restrictive. Due to safety and regulatory concerns, UAS are prohibited from flying in the National Airspace System without special authorization from the FAA. One main reason for this is the lack of an on-board pilot to "see and avoid" other air traffic and thereby maintain the safety of the skies. Development of a comparable capability, known as "Sense and Avoid" (SAA), has therefore …
An Applied Numerical Simulation Of Entrained-Flow Coal Gasification With Improved Sub-Models, Xijia Lu
An Applied Numerical Simulation Of Entrained-Flow Coal Gasification With Improved Sub-Models, Xijia Lu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The United States holds the world's largest estimated reserves of coal and is also a net exporter of it. Coal gasification provides a cleaner way to utilize coal than directly burning it. Gasification is an incomplete oxidation process that converts various carbon-based feedstocks into clean synthetic gas (syngas), which can be used to produce electricity and mechanical power with significantly reduced emissions. Syngas can also be used as feedstock for making chemicals and various materials.
A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) scheme has been used to simulate the gasification process for many years. However, many sub-models still need to be developed …

Relaxation Of Shear-Induced Precursors In Isotactic Polypropylene And Random Propylene–Ethylene Copolymers, Benjamin Schammé
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Flow induced crystallization (FIC) has a large impact on kinetics and morphology of semicrystalline polymers, and can therefore drastically change final properties such as dimensional and thermal stability, modulus and strength. Processing of polymers usually involves flow, so it is important to understand the mechanism of FIC. It is known that oriented precursors formed during flow are the key to FIC but they are not yet well understood. In this study, flow induced precursors are investigated by examining their relaxation, and the effect of comonomer is probed.
Using a commercial isotactic polypropylene and random propylene-ethylene copolymers, a fiber pull-out technique …

Makara Journal of Technology
Vacuum freeze drying is an excellent drying method, but it is very energy-intensive because a relatively long drying time is required. This research investigates the utilization of condenser waste heat for sublimation as a way of accelerating the drying rate. In addition, it also investigates the effect of internal cooling combined with vacuum cooling in the pressure reduction process. Jelly fish tentacles were used as the specimen, with different configurations for condenser heat waste and internal cooling valve opening. The results show that heating with condenser heat waste can accelerate the drying rate up to 0.0035 kg/m2.s. In addition, pre-freezing …

A New Experimental Approach To Evaluate Plasma-Induced Damage In Microcantilever, Yuki Nishimori, Shinji Ueki, Masakazu Sugiyama, Seiji Samukawa, Gen Hashiguchi
Makara Journal of Technology
Plasma etching, during micro-fabrication processing is indispensable for fabricating MEMS structures. During the plasma processes, two major matters, charged ions and vacuum–ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation damage, take charge of reliability degradation. The charged ions induce unwanted sidewall etching, generally called as “notching”, which causes degradation in brittle strength. Furthermore, the VUV irradiation gives rise to crystal defects on the etching surface. To overcome the problem, neutral beam etching (NBE), which use neutral particles without the VUV irradiation, has been developed. In order to evaluate the effect of the NBE quantitatively, we measured the resonance property of a micro-cantilever before and after …

Fatigue Life Prediction Of The Keel Structure Of A Tsunami Buoy Using Spectral Fatigue Analysis Method, Angga Yustiawan, Ketut Suastika, Wibowo Harso Nugroho
Makara Journal of Technology
One of the components of the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) is a surface buoy. The surface buoy is exposed to dynamic and random loadings while operating at sea, particularly due to waves. Because of the cyclic nature of the wave load, this may result in a fatigue damage of the keel structure, which connects the mooring line with the buoy hull. The operating location of the buoy is off the Java South Coast at the coordinate (10.3998 S, 108.3417 E). To determine the stress transfer function, model tests were performed, measuring the buoy motions and the stress at …

The Plasma Electrolysis Phenomenon In A Two-Compartment Reactor For Chlor-Alkali Production, Nelson Saksono, Fakhrian Abqari, Setijo Bismo
Makara Journal of Technology
Chlor-alkali is one of the most important processes in the chemical industry. It produces chlorine and caustic soda, which become the main feedstock of daily products. The aim of this study is to report the phenomenon of plasma electrolysis and how it can be used in chlor-alkali production for more efficient energy consumption. When the plasma is formed, the current fluctuates and gradually declines. Plasma electrolysis begins with the process of electrolysis itself. Due to Joule heating, gas bubbles are formed and a sheath is made on both electrodes, resulting in the plasma field. Plasma electrolysis can be identified by …

Observation Of Photovoltaic Effect And Single-Photon Detection In Nanowire Silicon Pn-Junction, Arief Udhiarto, Sri Purwiyanti, Daniel Moraru, Takeshi Mizuno, Michiharu Tabe
Makara Journal of Technology
We study nanowire silicon pin and pn-junctions at room and low temperature. Photovoltaic effects are observed for both devices at room temperature. At low temperature, nanowire pn-junction devices show their ability to detect single photon. This ability was not been observed for pin devices. Phosphorus-boron dopant cluster in the depletion region is considered to have the main role for single-photon detection capability. Fundamental mechanism of dopant-based single-photon detection in nanowire pn-junction is described in details.

Aligned Rutile TiO2 nanorods (r-TNRs) and TiO2 nanoflowers (r-TNFs) were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. Using hydrochloric acid (HCl) as chelating agent and titanium butoxide (TBOT) as precursor, aligned r-TNRs with r-TNFs were successfully growth onto fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) with different morphologies. The influences of surface morphologies to the rutile based Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) efficiency are discussed. The highest lightto- electric energy conversion efficiency, 1.80% is achieved using different concentration under simulated solar light illumination of 100 mWcm-2 (1.5 AM).

Determining The Air Gap Length Of An Axial Flux Wound Rotor Synchronous Generator, Abdul Multi, Iwa Garniwa, Uno Bintang Sudibyo
Makara Journal of Technology
The air gap length of the designed axial flux wound rotor (AFWR) synchronous generator is determined properly according to the design parameters. One of the distinct advantages of an axial flux (AF) machine is its adjustable air gap. An AF generator’s performance might be controlled by adjusting its air gap. The designed generator has a smallscale capacity that has 1 kW, 380 V, and 50 Hz. The windings are laid into slots made from laminated core. The slots are carved in the face of the stator and rotors. The generator has a single-double-sided slotted wound stator sandwiched between twin rotors. …

Finite Element Models Of The Knee & Hip Joints: Using Opensim To Predict Muscle Forces, Kevin S. Jones, Spencer D. Wangerin, Jeffrey D. Pyle, Stephen M. Klisch, Scott J. Hazelwood
STAR Program Research Presentations
Quantitative data of stresses and strains in the cartilage of the knee and hip joints are required to design prostheses and can be used to give accurate advice to patients with cartilage damage as to which activities should be avoided. Instrumented hip implants can only give the overall resultant force in the joint, not the stresses and strains throughout the cartilage. Finite Element (FE) models of the Knee and Hip are being constructed in order to obtain the stresses and strains in articular (of the joint) cartilage. Muscle forces and joint contact forces are required as inputs to these FE …
