Modeling Of Legged Locomotion With A Suspended Load In The Sagittal Plane, Karna P. Potwar Jan 2013

Modeling Of Legged Locomotion With A Suspended Load In The Sagittal Plane, Karna P. Potwar

Open Access Theses

Walking or running while carrying loads has always been a tedious task, more so when the loads are heavy. Such a task of carrying loads not only requires extra effort but also leads to physical pain and in some cases injury. Prior studies on human locomotion with a suspended load have used models that are restricted in their DOFs and so are not able to take into account the fore aft movement in human beings. The objective of this thesis is to model the dynamics of sagittal plane center-of-mass locomotion with a suspended load and apply findings to carrying loads …

Analysis Of An Actuated Two Segment Leg Model Of Locomotion, Nikhil Vinayak Rao Jan 2013

Analysis Of An Actuated Two Segment Leg Model Of Locomotion, Nikhil Vinayak Rao

Open Access Theses

Research studies on dynamic models of legged locomotion have generally focused on telescoping-type leg models. Such telescoping spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) models have been able to accurately predict observed center of mass (CoM) trajectories. There have been comparatively fewer studies on dynamics of locomotion

with segmented legs. Some earlier studies on the dynamics due to leg segmentation appear straightforward. For example, a simple model with the only joint moment being due to a passive springy knee has been shown to behave similarly to a telescoping spring-mass model. However, in real-life animal locomotion, there are multiple joint-moments acting at the …

Rotor Blade Operational Data Analysis Methods And Applications For Health Monitoring Of Wind Turbines Using Integrated Blade Sensing, Noah Jacob Myrent Jan 2013

Rotor Blade Operational Data Analysis Methods And Applications For Health Monitoring Of Wind Turbines Using Integrated Blade Sensing, Noah Jacob Myrent

Open Access Theses

Wind energy is one of the fastest growing sources of power production in the world today. In order to extract the maximum potential amount of energy from the wind, a wind turbine's reliability must be a top priority. As utility scale wind turbines increase in size and initial capital investment cost, there also comes an increasing need to monitor the health of the turbine. Currently, most wind turbines do not incorporate blade mounted inertial sensing in addition to blade strain measurements. This approach has the potential to detect inevitable blade damage types early on so that a maintenance schedule can …

Predicting Underwater Radiated Noise From Offshore Impact Pile Driving, Huikwan Kim Jan 2013

Predicting Underwater Radiated Noise From Offshore Impact Pile Driving, Huikwan Kim

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Offshore wind turbines have been installed throughout Europe and are expected to be built in the United States water shortly. Offshore wind is an attractive option because 53% of the nation’s population lives in coastal area where energy cost and demands are high. Offshore winds tend to blow harder and more uniformly than on land [1]. However, structure borne noise and vibration generated by offshore impact pile driving radiate into and propagate through the air, water, and sediment media. The objective of this project is quantitatively predicting noise level around the piling location at sea to estimate the effects of …

Dynamic Simulation Of Turbine Engine Used With Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell For Power Generation In The Megawatt Range, Carlos Eduardo Gutierrez Jan 2013

Dynamic Simulation Of Turbine Engine Used With Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell For Power Generation In The Megawatt Range, Carlos Eduardo Gutierrez

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) have a high operating temperature of approximately 650° C (1200° F) to achieve sufficient conductivity of its carbonate electrolyte. Therefore, a gas turbine engine coupled with a MCFC is desirable since the turbine engine can be used to provide hot gas to the cathode, and the cathode gas residue can be used to raise the temperature of the natural gas and water vapor mixture (fuel) before it enters the MCFC at the anode. Dynamic models of a hybrid power plant consisting of a gas turbine engine and a MCFC with their respective components were developed …

Shock Correlation Investigation In A Gaseous Fueled Axisymmetric Scramjet Flowpath, Jaime Omar Larios-Barbosa

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A pressure-based investigation was conducted on a gaseous fueled axisymmetric scramjet flowpath in Research Cell 22 located at Wright Patterson AFB. The investigation followed the work performed by Waltrup and Billig using combustion data to validate the form of the correlation in an attempt to achieve a good predictive tool for isolator length. Two years of axial wall pressure data using Mach values of 1.8 and 2.2 were analyzed in this investigation. The combustion data was shown to follow the same quadratic distribution show in Waltrup and Billig's work with the data being shifted to the right relative to the …

Wing Damage Effect On Dragonfly's Aerodynamic Performance During Takeoff, Kuo Gai Jan 2013

Wing Damage Effect On Dragonfly's Aerodynamic Performance During Takeoff, Kuo Gai

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Insect wing damage resulted from living environment or predation commonly happens in nature. This usually results in deterioration of insect's flight performance and as a consequence, the insect needs adjustment of flapping wings to compensate the effect from the wing loss. In this study, a dragonfly (Erythemis simpliciolis) with and without wing loss is chosen to study the change of aerodynamic performance of flapping wings. Three cases including flight with intact wings (IW), flight with one-sided forewing damage (OFD), and flight with double-side forewing damage (DFD) are determined. An integrated study using high-speed photogrammetry, three-dimensional surface reconstruction, and direct numerical …

Effect Of Process Variables On Sub-Melt Thermal Behavior And Solid-State Phase Transformations In Beam-Based Additive Manufacturing Of Ti-6al-4v, Heather N. Doak

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The success of laser and electron beam-based fabrication processes for additive manufacture and repair applications requires the ability to control melt pool geometry while maintaining a consistent and desirable microstructure. Previous work has employed a process map approach to link melt pool geometry to solidification microstructure (grain-size and morphology) in beam-based fabrication of Ti-6Al-4V. The current work extends the approach to investigate the effects of process variables on solid-state phase transformations below the solidification temperature through Finite Element Modeling, the 3-D Rosenthal Solution, and experimentation. Process maps for solid-state microstructure could be used to help maintain consistent and reliable mechanical …

This project is to design and prototype an electric wheelchair that is lighter, more flexible in …

An Experimental Investigation On The Control Of Tip Vortices From Wind Turbine Blade, Zhe Ning Jan 2013

An Experimental Investigation On The Control Of Tip Vortices From Wind Turbine Blade, Zhe Ning

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Wind turbine dynamics, wake effects and environmental impacts have been identified the most significant research topics needed for wind resource characterization and wind power generation. Among these issues, tip vortices generated from the blade tip have been recognized as a substantial resource for the turbulent wake flow as well as the aerodynamic noise emission from a wind turbine. An experimental study is conducted to characterize the evolution of the tip vortices downstream of a well-designed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) model. In addition to measuring dynamic wind loads (both aerodynamic forces and moments) and power output from the wind turbine …

Steps In The Development Of A Full Particle-In-Cell, Monte Carlo Simulation Of The Plasma In The Discharge Chamber Of An Ion Engine, Bryan James Penkal

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The design and development of ion engines is a difficult and expensive process. In order to alleviate these costs and speed ion engine development, it is proposed to further develop a particle-in-cell (PIC), Monte-Carlo collision (MCC) model of an ion engine discharge chamber, which has previously been worked on by the Wright State Ion Engine Modeling Group. Performing detailed and accurate simulations of ion engines can lead to millions of dollars in savings in development costs.

In order to recognize these savings more work must be done on the present day models used to simulate ion engine performance. The work …

Bull's-Eye Structure With A Sub-Wavelength Circular Aperture, Masoud Zarepoor Jan 2013

Bull's-Eye Structure With A Sub-Wavelength Circular Aperture, Masoud Zarepoor

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on improving the spatial resolution of terahertz (THz) imaging. Using a sub-wavelength aperture in a metal ground plane is the most common way to improve the spatial resolution, but a sub-wavelength aperture has low radiation transmission. To increase the radiation transmission of a sub-wavelength aperture, periodic circular grooves were put in the metal around the aperture. The sub-wavelength circular aperture and the periodic circular grooves around it are known as the bull's-eye structure. The bull's-eye structure shows high radiation transmission at its design frequency, and it also has sub-wavelength spatial resolution. This research designed the bull's-eye structure …

Structural-Acoustic Analysis And Optimization Of Embedded Exhaust-Washed Structures, Ryan N. Vogel Jan 2013

Structural-Acoustic Analysis And Optimization Of Embedded Exhaust-Washed Structures, Ryan N. Vogel

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The configurations for high speed, low observable aircraft expose many critical areas on the structure to extreme environments of intense acoustic pressure loadings. When combined with primary structural and thermal loads, this effect can cause high cycle fatigue to aircraft skins and embedded exhaust system components. In past aircraft design methods, these vibro-acoustic loads have often been neglected based on their relatively small size compared to other thermal and structural loads and the difficulty in capturing their dynamic and frequency dependent responses. This approach is insufficient for effective advanced designs of complex aerospace structures, such as internal ducted exhaust systems …

Solution-Processed Nanoparticle Super-Float-Gated Organic Field-Effect Transistor As Un-Cooled Ultraviolet And Infrared Photon Counter, Yongbo Yuan, Qingfeng Dong, Bin Yang, Fawen Guo, Qi Zhang, Ming Han, Jinsong Huang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

High sensitivity photodetectors in ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) range have broad civilian and military applications. Here we report on an un-cooled solution-processed UV-IR photon counter based on modified organic field-effect transistors. This type of UV detectors have light absorbing zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) sandwiched between two gate dielectric layers as a floating gate. The photon-generated charges on the floating gate cause high resistance regions in the transistor channel and tune the source-drain output current. This ‘‘super-float-gating’’ mechanism enables very high sensitivity photodetectors with a minimum detectable ultraviolet light intensity of 2.6 photons/µm2s at room temperature as well …

Analysis Of Electrically-Forced Vibrations Of Piezoelectric Mesa Resonators, Huijing He, Guo-Quan Nie, Jin-Xi Liu, Jiashi Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We study the electrically forced thickness-shear and thickness-twist vibrations of stepped thickness piezoelectric plate mesa resonators made of polarized ceramics or 6-mm class crystals. A theoretical analysis based on the theory of piezoelectricity is performed, and an analytical solution is obtained using the trigonometric series. The electrical admittance, resonant frequencies, and mode shapes are calculated, and strong energy trapping of the modes is observed. Their dependence on the geometric parameters of the resonator is also examined.

Selective Detection And Automated Counting Of Fluorescently-Labeled Chrysotile Asbestos Using A Dual-Mode High-Throughput Microscopy (Dm-Htm) Method, Myoung-Ock Cho, Hyo Mi Chang, Donghee Lee, Yeon Gyu Yu, Hwataik Han, Jung Kyung Kim

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Phase contrast microscopy (PCM) is a widely used analytical method for airborne asbestos, but it is unable to distinguish asbestos from non-asbestos fibers and requires time-consuming and laborious manual counting of fibers. Previously, we developed a high-throughput microscopy (HTM) method that could greatly reduce human intervention and analysis time through automated image acquisition and counting of fibers. In this study, we designed a dual-mode HTM (DM-HTM) device for the combined reflection and fluorescence imaging of asbestos, and automated a series of built-in image processing commands of ImageJ software to test its capabilities. We used DksA, a chrysotile-adhesive protein, for selective …

Molten Carbonates As An Effective Oxygen Reduction Catalyst For 550–650°C Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yunhui Gong, Xue Li, Lingling Zhang, Whitney Tharp, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

We report the first study that investigates the use of molten carbonates as an effective catalyst to promote electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). A series of binary Li-K carbonate compositions were incorporated into the porous backbones of a commercial cathode assembled in symmetrical impedance cells for electrochemical characterization. Within the temperature range of 550–650◦C, we observed that the polarization and ohmic area-specific resistances of the original sample can be significantly reduced by the introduction of molten carbonates. A new ORR charge-transfer model involving two intermediate species CO5 2− and …

Positive Matrix Factorization Of Pm2.5 - Eliminating The Effects Of Gas/Particle Partitioning Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds, Mingjie Xie, Kelley Barsanti, Michael P. Hannigan, Steven J. Dutton, Sverre Vedal

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gas-phase concentrations of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were calculated from gas/particle (G/P) partitioning theory using their measured particle-phase concentrations. The particle-phase data were obtained from an existing filter measurement campaign (27 January 2003-2 October 2005) as a part of the Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study, including 970 observations of 71 SVOCs (Xie et al., 2013). In each compound class of SVOCs, the lighter species (e.g. docosane in n-alkanes, fluoranthene in PAHs) had higher total concentrations (gas + particle phase) and lower particle-phase fractions. The total SVOC concentrations were analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Then the results were …

Mechanics Of Hip Dysplasia Reduction In Infants Using The Pavlik Harness: A Physics Based Computational Model, Orlando Ardila, Eduardo Divo, Faissal Moslehy, George Rab, Alain Kassab, Charles Price

Mechanical Engineering - Daytona Beach

Biomechanical factors influencing the reduction of dislocated hips with the Pavlik harness in patients of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) were studied using a three-dimensional computer model simulating hip reduction dynamics in (1) subluxated and (2) fully dislocated hip joints. Five hip adductor muscles were identified as key mediators of DDH prognosis, and the non-dimensional force contribution of each in the direction necessary to achieve concentric hip reductions was determined. Results point to the adductor muscles as mediators of subluxated hip reductions, as their mechanical action is a function of the degree of hip dislocation. For subluxated hips in …

Modeling The Structural-Thermal-Electrical Coupling In An Electrostatically Actuated Mems Switch And Its Impact On The Switch Stability, Hassen M. Ouakad, Mohammad I. Younis

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Modeling and analysis for the static behavior and collapse instabilities of a MEMS cantilever switch subjected to both electrical and thermal loadings are presented. The thermal loading forces can be as a result of a huge amount of switching contact of the microswitch. The model considers the microbeam as a continuous medium and the electric force as a nonlinear function of displacement and accounts for its fringing-field effect. The electric force is assumed to be distributed over specific lengths underneath the microbeam. A boundary-value solver is used to study the collapse instability, which brings the microbeam from its unstuck configuration …
