Solar Furnace: Heliostat And Concentrator Design, Tyler Heagney, Andrew Schiller, Matthew Gaide Jan 2011

Solar Furnace: Heliostat And Concentrator Design, Tyler Heagney, Andrew Schiller, Matthew Gaide

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In recent decades, solar energy has been shown as a viable, clean, and abundant alternative to fossil fuels. Many methods of solar energy collection are being researched, with solar thermal electrochemistry being one of the most promising. Solar thermal electrochemistry uses sunlight to heat a furnace to temperatures nearing 2000 K. At these temperatures, metallic oxides can be decomposed to metals and oxygen with minimal electrical work. Achieving these high temperatures requires a solar furnace that consists of a heliostat to track and reflect the sun’s rays into a concentrator, which then focuses the sunlight to a single point in …

Oxidation Performance Of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics In Air And A Simulated Combustion Environment, Tim Englert Jan 2011

Oxidation Performance Of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics In Air And A Simulated Combustion Environment, Tim Englert

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The oxidation resistance of various (Zr or Hf)B2-based ceramics will be tested in order to evaluate their respective performances in both furnace and oxyacetylene torch environments. Furnace testing will allow experimentation at temperatures similar to hypersonic travel or reentry conditions (>2000°C); use of an oxyacetylene torch flame will enable the replication of severe thermal gradients and combustion conditions. Oxidation resistance will be firstly quantified by measuring a sample’s change in mass after exposure to the testing environment for a defined time period. A sample that experiences a smaller change in mass is better able to resist oxidation. Oxidation rate …

Solar Thermal Electrolytic Production Of Mg From Mgo, William Sheline, L. Matthews, N. Lindenke, S. Duncan, R. Palumbo

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The electrolytic production of Mg from MgO was experimentally and theoretically investigated near 1550 K. The oxide was dissolved in either CaF2 or MgF2. The cathode was Mo and the anode was either Pt or Cgr. Mg evolved as a gas, was quenched on cooling coils at the exit of the reactor and was collected for analysis. A thermodynamic cycle study indicates that the ideal thermal efficiency for the solar process is 35 percent for an inert anode and 39 percent for a carbon anode, making the process competitive with the industrial potential of other solar to metal processes. Experimental …

Decoupled Solar Thermal Chemical Electrolysis Of Water To Produce Hydrogen, Melissa Meyer, Megan Wilken Jan 2011

Decoupled Solar Thermal Chemical Electrolysis Of Water To Produce Hydrogen, Melissa Meyer, Megan Wilken

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Solar thermal chemical research at Valparaiso University focuses on using concentrated solar energy to produce hydrogen, which can be used to generate electricity in fuel cells. A two-step solar electrolytic process has been proposed for chemical systems such as Fe2O3/Fe3O4, Co3O4/CoO, and Mn2O3/MnO. This new process produces hydrogen using ideally 63-82% less electricity than the traditional electrolytic process. Theoretical solar-to-electrical efficiencies are approximately 19-40%, a range comparable to similar solar thermal chemical processes. Preliminary experimental work with the Fe2O3/Fe3O4 system has validated the chemical possibility of each step of the process. Future work seeks to determine if the proposed processes …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The objective of this experiment is to evaluate the oxidation performance and heat resistance of the Ultra-high Temperature Ceramics (UHTCs) ZrB2 and HfB2 under high temperature, high heat flux, ablative, and oxidative environments. The investigation of UHTCs such as ZrB2 and HfB2 could potentially lead to new, easily reusable thermal protection systems (TPS) for space craft. The UHTC samples will be oxidized using an oxy-acetylene torch and a high temperature air furnace. The torch will expose the samples to rapid heating, high velocity combustion gasses, and sample temperatures in excess of 3000°C. The furnace will expose the samples to temperatures …

Parametric Analysis Of A Detonation-Type Turbofan, Yashwanth M. Swamy Jan 2011

Parametric Analysis Of A Detonation-Type Turbofan, Yashwanth M. Swamy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

A new type of turbofan which detonates a fuel-air mixture was theoretically found to perform better than a conventional turbofan. A continuous detonation process is described and considered inside the core of the turbofan. The detonation-type turbofan needs certain modifications to detonate the fuel-air mixture at the core of the turbofan, namely, an annular detonation chamber to achieve continuous detonation. A parametric analysis of the new detonation-type turbofan was developed and used to calculate the performance parameters.

Improving Sample Collection Of Trace Particles Of Mock Explosive On Nano Coated Sensor, Daniel Woldemichael Yebo Jan 2011

Improving Sample Collection Of Trace Particles Of Mock Explosive On Nano Coated Sensor, Daniel Woldemichael Yebo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In protection against explosive-based terrorism, development and mass deployment of miniature sensors can play a tremendous role. In trace explosive detection, one of the challenges is bringing explosive vapor samples from the environment to the sensor element. Such collection of a selective and sufficient amount of air sample will enable the device detect the explosive at lower concentration. This can be done by adsorption of the explosive vapor on a substrate. This research implements the idea by developing a nano coated sensor on a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) substrate. The effects of varying the amount of polyethyleneimine in the nano …

Effects Of A Heated Turbulent Boundary Layer On Surface Pressure Fluctuations, David William Rich Jan 2011

Effects Of A Heated Turbulent Boundary Layer On Surface Pressure Fluctuations, David William Rich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent work has shown that spatial correlation of surface pressure fluctuations in a fully turbulent atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) can give information about the velocity field and turbulence. This is of particular importance to the future of wind energy to predict the incoming velocity flow field of wind turbines so as to actively control them for peak operating efficiency and damage reduction. All of the environmental effects on the surface pressure fluctuations need to be fully understood before a suitable flow prediction algorithm can be constructed. One such environmental effect which has not been previously studied is the effect of …

Quantification Of An Ultrasound Test Apparatus And Its Potential Use To Control Nuisance Species In Commercial Aquaculture Settings, Bradley T. Goodwiller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As one step in the investigation of using acoustics to improve aquaculture production, work was pursued on the possible use of ultrasound to control the Bolbophorus trematode in commercial catfish ponds. The trematode population can be controlled by eliminating the host ram's horn snail via exposure to high amplitude ultrasound. Initial laboratory tests indicated that a commercially available sonicator (operating at 20 kHz) is capable of killing individual snails in fish tanks. More thorough testing indicated efficiency rates of approximately 35% on batches of 10 snails. In addition to the snails killed immediately, there was evidence that the sonication technique …

Locating And Extracting Acoustic And Neural Signals, Na Zhu Jan 2011

Locating And Extracting Acoustic And Neural Signals, Na Zhu

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. Combining these two approaches leads to a novel technology …

The Fourier Spectral Element Method For Vibration Analysis Of General Dynamic Structures, Xuefeng Zhang Jan 2011

The Fourier Spectral Element Method For Vibration Analysis Of General Dynamic Structures, Xuefeng Zhang

Wayne State University Dissertations

The Fourier Spectral Element Method (FSEM) was proposed by Wen Li on the vibration of simple beams (Li, 1999), and was extended to the vibration of rectangular plates (Li, 2004). This dissertation proposes a revised formulation on the vibration of rectangular plates with general boundary conditions, and extends the FSEM on the vibration of general triangular plates with elastic boundary supports. 3-D coupling formulation among the plates and beams is further developed. A general dynamic structure is then analyzed by dividing the structure into coupled triangular plates, rectangular plates, and beams. The accuracy and fast convergence of FSEM method is …

Study Of Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, Lian Duan, M. Pino Martín Jan 2011

Study Of Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction In Hypersonic Turbulent Boundary Layers, Lian Duan, M. Pino Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Studies of the turbulence-chemistry interaction (TCI) are performed in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers using direct numerical simulation (DNS) flow fields under typical hypersonic conditions representative of blunt-body and slender-body hypersonic vehicles, with super catalytic and noncatalytic wall conditions in pure air. Nondimensional governing parameters, 'interaction' Damk̈ohler number and relative heat release, are proposed to measure the influence of TCI on flow composition and temperature. Both a priori and posteriori studies are performed to assess the effect of TCI on chemical production rates and mean and turbulence flow characteristics. In addition, an effective approach (called PDF-TS) to estimate the intensity of …

Negative Pressure Characteristics Of An Evaporating Meniscus At Nanoscale, Shalabh Maroo, J N. Chung Jan 2011

Negative Pressure Characteristics Of An Evaporating Meniscus At Nanoscale, Shalabh Maroo, J N. Chung

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

This study aims at understanding the characteristics of negative liquid pressures at the nanoscale using molecular dynamics simulation. A nano-meniscus is formed by placing liquid argon on a platinum wall between two nanochannels filled with the same liquid. Evaporation is simulated in the meniscus by increasing the temperature of the platinum wall for two different cases. Non-evaporating films are obtained at the center of the meniscus. The liquid film in the non-evaporating and adjacent regions is found to be under high absolute negative pressures. Cavitation cannot occur in these regions as the capillary height is smaller than the critical cavitation …

Evaluation Methods For Health Monitoring Of Aerospace Structure Rotary Joints, Sergio Armando Navarro Jan 2011

Evaluation Methods For Health Monitoring Of Aerospace Structure Rotary Joints, Sergio Armando Navarro

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In September 2007, the excessive vibrations played a significant role in the station operation since one of the rotary joints, which provides the station electrical energy, presented an anomaly. The replacement of its bearing components and re-lubrication were necessary to reduce the problem. To avoid a new anomaly, the inspection of the rotary joints performance continues by using the accelerometers data. This thesis presents three new approaches to monitor the vibrations at the International Space Station based on Root-Mean-Square, kurtosis, and Approximate Entropy (ApEn). MATLAB functions and codes were necessary to implement the three monitoring techniques results from the provided …

Application Of The Tdma Technique Toward The Size And Charge Distribution Measurement Of Graphite, Gold, Palladium, And Silver Aerosols, Matthew Paul Simones

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The knowledge of charge distributions among aerosol particles has been an important topic for many years because of the strong electrostatic interactions which can greatly influence aerosol transport and evolution. Theoretical models have been developed although experimental verification has been limited because of the difficulty in measuring charged aerosols. Recently a method utilizing a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA) has been shown to be applicable toward measuring both the size and charge distributions of nanosized combustion aerosols. The goal of this work is on further exploration of this method toward the measurement of non-combustion aerosols and in particular those associated …
