This paper provides results from a study that characterized the particle distributions found from variable contaminated airstreams in energy recovery ventilators (ERV) during two different test scenarios. The first scenario involved the measurement of the particulate concentrations during an operational situation when the pressure differential forces cross-flow leakage between the exhaust and intake streams. The second scenario involved the characterization of aerosol particulate concentrations from the carry-over contamination when the wheel was not in operation. The findings from the study concluded that if a source of aerosol particulate matter is present in an environment utilizing an ERV system, then cross-over …

Effect Of Electrical Double Layer On Electric Conductivity And Pressure Drop In A Pressure-Driven Microchannel Flow, Heng Ban, Bochuan Lin, Zhourui Song
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The effect of an electrical double layer (EDL) on microchannel flow has been studied widely, and a constant bulk electric conductivity is often used in calculations of flow rate or pressure drop. In our experimental study of pressure-driven micropipette flows, the pipette diameter is on the same order of magnitude as the Debye length. The overlapping EDL resulted in a much higher electric conductivity, lower streaming potential, and lower electroviscous effect. To elucidate the effect of overlapping EDL, this paper developed a simple model for water flow without salts or dissolved gases (such as CO2) inside a two-dimensional …

Solar Radiative Heating Of Fiber-Optic Cables Used To Monitor Temperatures In Water, Bethany T. Neilson, Christine E. Hatch, Heng Ban, Scott W. Tyler
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
In recent years, applications of distributed temperature sensing (DTS) have increased in number and diversity. Because fiber-optic cables used for DTS are typically sheathed in dark UV-resistant materials, the question arises as to how shortwave solar radiation penetrating a water column influences the accuracy of absolute DTS-derived temperatures in aquatic applications. To quantify these effects, we completed a modeling effort that accounts for the effects of radiation and convection on a submersed cable to predict when solar heating may be important. Results indicate that for cables installed at shallow depths in clear, low-velocity water bodies, measurable heating of the cable …

Parametric Analysis Of A Coupled Photovoltaic/Thermal Concentrating Solar Collector For Electricity Generation, Todd Otanicar, I. Chowdhury, P. E. Phelan, R. Prasher
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
The analysis of the combined efficiencies in a coupled photovoltaic (PV)/thermal concentrating solar collector are presented based on a coupled electrical/thermal model. The calculations take into account the drop in efficiency that accompanies the operation of PV cells at elevated temperatures along with a detailed analysis of the thermal system including losses. An iterative numerical scheme is described that involves a coupled electrothermal simulation of the solar energy conversion process. In the proposed configuration losses in the PV cell due to reduced efficiencies at elevated temperatures and the incident solar energy below the PV bandgap are both harnessed as heat. …

Nanofluid-Based Direct Absorption Solar Collector, Todd Otanicar, P. E. Phelan, R. S. Prasher, G. Rosengarten, R. A. Taylor
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
Solar energy is one of the best sources of renewable energy with minimal environmental impact. Direct absorption solar collectors have been proposed for a variety of applications such as water heating; however the efficiency of these collectors is limited by the absorption properties of the working fluid, which is very poor for typical fluids used in solar collectors. It has been shown that mixing nanoparticles in a liquid (nanofluid) has a dramatic effect on the liquid thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity. Nanoparticles also offer the potential of improving the radiative properties of liquids, leading to an increase in the …

Modeling And Simulation For Shape Memory Polymer Based Self-Healing Syntactic Foam, Wei Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Syntactic foams, renowned for their low density and high mechanical properties, are enjoying continuing growth in various civilian and military sectors. However, like laminated composites, foam cored structures are vulnerable to impact damages and suffering from inabilities in repairing macro-scale cracks. A self-healing mechanism for structural damage is genuinely desired. A recent development in self-healing structural damage is a two-step close then heal (CTH) scheme proposed by Li and Nettles [1] and elucidated by Li and Uppu [2], by mimicking the self-healing process of human skin. This concept has been further demonstrated in Nji and Li’s work [3] that a …
Molecular Simulation Of The Infrared Absorption Cross Section And Thermophysical Properties Of A Polyatomic Fluid, Zhi Liang
Doctoral Dissertations
"The work presented in this dissertation aims at ab initio calculations of the infrared absorption cross section, heat capacity, self-diffusion coefficient, shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of a polyatomic fluid with the aid of statistical mechanics. The simulation is firstly focused on calculating single-molecule properties such as molecular structure, vibrational energy eigen values and transition dipole moments using an efficient method based on the density functional theory. Based on these ab initio results, the infrared absorption cross sections are determined by the Fermi's Golden rule, and the thermophysical properties are determined from molecular dynamics simulations. Using carbon dioxide as an …

Analysis Of Laminated Architectural Glazing Subjected To Combined Wind And Debris Impact Loading, Mahesh Shibarooru Shetty
Doctoral Dissertations
"Laminated glazing has been a popular form of window glazing in recent years and is found to be effective during extreme weather conditions like hurricane. Laminated glass is composed of two glass layers with a polymer as an interlayer. The main objective of this work involves studying the stress response, failure and damage analysis of rectangular laminated architectural glazing against combined wind and windborne debris impact. Here both small-hard (like roof gravel) and large-soft (like timber) windborne debris are considered. The stress response of the rectangular laminated architectural glazing was modeled using the finite element code ABAQUS. The effect of …
Effects Of Optimized And Sub-Optimum Two Degree Of Freedom Lining Tolerances On Modeled Inlet Acoustic Attenuation And Normal Incidence Impedance Measurement At Elevated Temperatures, David R. Burd
Doctoral Dissertations
"This work first investigates the effect of manufacturing tolerances on realized attenuation for two degree-of-freedom linings with the use of lining models and finite element duct propagation codes. Acoustic linings were created for two turbofan engines that optimize attenuation at takeoff/sideline and approach conditions. Lining physical and geometric parameters were set, which best meet the optimum impedance requirements at two target frequencies. Similar linings were created to investigate sub-optimum designs. Variations of these parameters representing realistic manufacturing tolerances were used to systematically examine the effect on installed impedance and predicted attenuation. Attenuation at sideline and approach conditions was found to …

This paper discusses challenge-based instructional (CBI) materials developed for courses in Statics and Dynamics. This effort is a component of a funded College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA) grant from the Department of Education, and focuses on student retention and development of adaptive expertise. Studies have shown that minority science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students leave STEM undergraduate fields in part due to lack of real world connections to their classroom learning experiences. Furthermore, in STEM fields the conventional approach is to teach for efficiency first and for innovation only in the latter years of the curriculum. This …

Nose gear failure is a high concern in the aviation industries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration reports, 55% of aircraft failures occur during takeoff and landing while 45% of failures occur during flight. The objective of this thesis is to determine the stress behavior and the displacement of a nose gear of an aircraft during landing using structural finite element analysis. The nose gear was first modeled using computer-aided design software and then imported into finite element software. The external forces were determined analytically and the interactions between components were carefully modeled using contact analysis. The tire was modeled …
Characterization Of Defects In Metal Sheets Via Infrared Thermography, Marc Anthony Harik
Characterization Of Defects In Metal Sheets Via Infrared Thermography, Marc Anthony Harik
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Defects in Aluminum, Stainless steel and galvanized steel sheets are studied in reflection mode infrared thermography. The effect of material properties, surface finish, heating intensity, heater emission spectra, pixel size and defect size are studied. Contrast is governed by heat quality, emissivity and defect geometry—which follows a logarithmic trend. The diameter detected via infrared thermography is found to be at least 30% larger than the measured diameter and sub-pixel defects can be detected. The use of gradient and Laplacian of temperature is introduced as a means of increasing defect contrast and mitigating heater variation.
Sustainable Resource Utilization In Manufacturing Of Printed Circuit Board Assembly: Exergy Analysis Of The Process, Subramaniam Saiganesh
Sustainable Resource Utilization In Manufacturing Of Printed Circuit Board Assembly: Exergy Analysis Of The Process, Subramaniam Saiganesh
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Engineering for sustainable development requires prudent utilization of resources under economic, environmental and societal constraints. Resource utilization must follow a holistic approach. This brings in a need for comprehensive metrics which are simple, standard and universal. Thermodynamics may offer a metric that focuses on both quality and quantity of energy resources which may carry information to be combined with other metrics. This metric may be a thermodynamic property called exergy or available energy, which provides a better insight into resource use in both energy and non-energy producing systems. This thesis is devoted to a study of the exergy concept in …

Numerical Modeling Of The Dynamic Response Of A Multi-Bilinear-Spring Support System, Trey D. Gilliam
Numerical Modeling Of The Dynamic Response Of A Multi-Bilinear-Spring Support System, Trey D. Gilliam
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is an International Space Station Experiment that features a unique nonlinear support system with no previous flight heritage. The experiment consists of multiple straps with piecewise-linear stiffness curves that support a cryogenic magnet in three-dimensional space inside of a vacuum chamber. The stiffness curves for each strap are essentially bilinear and switch between two distinct slopes at a specified displacement. This highly nonlinear support system poses many questions in regards to feasible computational methods of analysis and possible response behavior. This thesis develops a numerical model for a multi-bilinear-spring support system motivated by the Alpha Magnetic …
Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur
Near-Field Radiative Transfer: Thermal Radiation, Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation And Optical Characterization, Mathieu Francoeur
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on near-field radiative transfer, which can be defined as the discipline concerned with energy transfer via electromagnetic waves at sub-wavelength distances. Three specific subjects related to this discipline are investigated, namely nearfield thermal radiation, nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic (nano-TPV) power generation and optical characterization. An algorithm for the solution of near-field thermal radiation problems in one-dimensional layered media is developed, and several tests are performed showing the accuracy, consistency and versatility of the procedure. The possibility of tuning near-field radiative heat transfer via thin films supporting surface phononpolaritons (SPhPs) in the infrared is afterwards investigated via the computation of …
A Study Of Friction Testing Methods Applicable To Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Replicated Parts, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, G. Bissacco
A Study Of Friction Testing Methods Applicable To Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Replicated Parts, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, G. Bissacco
Conference Papers
For replication processes to be deemed successful it must be possible to remove the replicated parts from the tool after processing. With decreasing part and feature size the challenge of demoulding replicated parts increases since the resulting parts and replication tooling used are more delicate and can be easily damaged. Predictive demoulding force models can be used to optimise the part, tool and process parameters to maximise the likelihood of success. Developing accurate models for this process requires knowledge of the dominant interfacial contributions to friction and knowledge of the size scale at which the dominant contributions operate together with …
Pvd And Cvd Coatings For The Metal Forming Industry, Simon Montgomery, David Kennedy, Noel O'Dowd
Pvd And Cvd Coatings For The Metal Forming Industry, Simon Montgomery, David Kennedy, Noel O'Dowd
Conference Papers
Metal forming applications are, by their very nature, taxing on the tools and machines used to achieve a finished component. Material degradation and wear is of critical importance in any such operation as a failing in the tool or machine has the potential to cause health hazards and/or significant monetary losses. The wear of material is due to the contact of two opposing surfaces and their subsequent motion relative to each other. It can take many forms some examples of which are: a two or three body abrasive type, a rolling fatigue type or an adhesion type.
Much research has …

Thermal Analog To Afm Force-Displacement Measurements For Nanoscale Interfacial Contact Resistance, Brian D. Iverson, John E. Blendell, Suresh V. Garimella
Faculty Publications
Thermal diffusion measurements on PMMA-coated Si substrates using heated AFM tips were performed to determine the contact resistance between an organic thin film and Si. The measurement methodology presented demonstrates how the thermal contrast signal obtained during a force-displacement ramp is used to quantify the resistance to heat transfer through an internal interface. The results also delineate the interrogation thickness beyond which thermal diffusion in the organic thin film is not affected appreciably by the underlying substrate.
Elastohydrodynamic Analysis Of Spur Gears Using Load-Sharing Concept: Running-In And Steady-State, Saleh Akbarzadeh
Elastohydrodynamic Analysis Of Spur Gears Using Load-Sharing Concept: Running-In And Steady-State, Saleh Akbarzadeh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Gears are widely used in industry and hence their performance is of vital importance. Under the typical operating conditions of gears, the lubricant layer formed between the teeth of the pinion and the gear cannot completely separate the surfaces and contact of asperities of the pinion and gear occurs. This case is usually referred to as mixed lubrication problem. In this research the load-sharing concept has been employed to predict the performance of the pinion-gear system. The load-sharing concept is an efficient method to solve the mixed lubrication problem and is capable to predict the thickness of the lubricant film, …

Fabrication, Characterization, Modeling And Testing Of A Nanostructured Bulk Thermoelectric Cooler, Dinesh Pinisetty
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
New generation micro/nano devices are emerging to monitor, control and act on living systems. Particularly, in the field of cryobiology, there is a need to monitor and control temperature at the cellular level. An important step towards achieving this aim is to fabricate a novel bulk nanostructured thermoelectric cooler (TEC). As a first step towards achieving efficient localized control of temperature in biological systems, Bismuth-telluride (Bi2Te3) and Antimony-Telluride (Sb2Te3) arrays of nanowires and nanotubes were fabricated, characterized and modeled. A thermal conductivity model originally developed by Dames and Chen for superlattice nanowires was extended to nanotubes. Based on this model …
The Effect Of Anisotropic Surface Energy On The Stability Of Micro And Nano Wires, Ping Du
The Effect Of Anisotropic Surface Energy On The Stability Of Micro And Nano Wires, Ping Du
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A liquid thread of radius R will break up into drops if the axial wavelength of the surface perturbation L > 2πR. If L < 2πR, the thread is stable and will remain intact. This is Rayleigh’s stability criterion based on a continuum model. We use molecular dynamics to simulate the evolution of Lennard-Jones liquid threads with equilibrium radius R = 2.3-6.6, where R has been non-dimensionalized by the distance at which the Lennard-Jones potential equals zero. We find that if R is fixed, the wavelength L is bounded by Lmin and Lmax. For L > Lmax the thread always breaks up and stays as drops, and for L < Lmin the thread remains intact. However, for Lmin < L < Lmax, the thread oscillates continuously among several shapes. The appearance of various shapes can be explained by the energy fluctuation of the system.
We also simulate the evolution of Lennard-Jones nanowires with equilibrium radius R = 1.57, 2.58, 3.59, and 4.60 by molecular dynamics. The wires …
Experimental And Analytical Study Of The Surface Texturing Enhanced Lubrication Elements, Yifan Qiu
Experimental And Analytical Study Of The Surface Texturing Enhanced Lubrication Elements, Yifan Qiu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Surface texturing is a method that modifies the frictional surface of a nominally flat tribocomponent by shallow patterns. It is found that with added patterns to the surface of a mechanical face seal or thrust bearing, their tribological performance improves, i.e. both friction and wear rate decrease. The current research concentrates on the analysis of hydrodynamic effect responsible for the performance enhancement of the spiral groove patterns and dimples on mechanical seal-like structures and the experimental evaluation of the tribological behavior of these structures. Surface textures considered are: dimple texture and spiral groove pattern. In the research on the dimple …
