Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the last two decades substantial advances have been made in the understanding of the scientific basis of urban climates. These are reviewed here with attention to sustainability of cities, applications that use climate information, and scientific understanding in relation to measurements and modelling. Consideration is given from street (micro) scale to neighbourhood (local) to city and region (meso) scale. Those areas where improvements are needed in the next decade to ensure more sustainable cities are identified. High-priority recommendations are made in the following six strategic areas: observations, data, understanding, modelling, tools and education. These include the need for more …

Ab-10-C037: Effects Of Noise From Building Mechanical Systems On Elementary School Student Achievement, Lauren M. Ronsse, Lily M. Wang Jan 2010

Ab-10-C037: Effects Of Noise From Building Mechanical Systems On Elementary School Student Achievement, Lauren M. Ronsse, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This project seeks to determine what relationship, if any, exists betweenbackground noise levels in elementary classrooms due to the building mechanicalsystems and student performance on achievement tests. Previous research inclassroom acoustics has clearly identified that lower background noise levelsresult in higher speech intelligibility which is crucial for the learning process;however, there is a lack of data correlating lower noise levels to improved studentachievement scores. For this study, background noise level measurements were madein 14 elementary schools in a public school system in Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA.The measurements were made in unoccupied classrooms with the central buildingmechanical systems activated. Second and …

Model-Based Nonlinear Control Of Active Tilting-Pad Bearings, An Wu Jan 2010

Model-Based Nonlinear Control Of Active Tilting-Pad Bearings, An Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A promising mechanical bearing candidate for active operation is the tilting-pad bearing. The proposed active tilting-pad bearing has linear actuators that radially translate each pad. The use of feedback control in determining the actuator forces allows for the automatic, continuous adjustment of the pad position during the operation of the rotating machine. In the first part of the dissertation, we develop a nonlinear dynamic model of the active bearing system. The hydrodynamic force produced by the fluid film is modeled as a nonlinear, squeeze-film damper plus repellent spring. A model-based nonlinear controller is then designed to exponentially regulate the rotor …

Uv-Lithographic Patterning Of Micro-Features On A Conical Mold Insert, Justin P. Huber Jan 2010

Uv-Lithographic Patterning Of Micro-Features On A Conical Mold Insert, Justin P. Huber

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In past studies, several techniques have been employed to create microscopic features on relatively simple surfaces. Of these, lithography-based techniques have proven effective at manufacturing large fields of deterministic microasperities and microcavities on planar and cylindrical substrates. The present study focuses on adapting UV-lithography to a more complex substrate. Machined from stainless steel, a conical mold insert introduces an interesting geometry designed for the injection molding of radial lip seal elastomer. The distinct shape of this mold insert poises unique challenges to a conventional lithography procedure. Spray application is investigated as a feasible means to deposit layers of photoresist on …

Investigation Of The Design Of A Bistable Micro-Chemical-Mechanical Device Utilizing Lateral Buckling, Susan Lyn Barnes Jan 2010

Investigation Of The Design Of A Bistable Micro-Chemical-Mechanical Device Utilizing Lateral Buckling, Susan Lyn Barnes

Honors Theses

The Gracias Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University has developed microgrippers which utilize chemically-actuated joints to be used in micro-surgery. These grippers, however, take up to thirty minutes to close fully when activated biochemicals in the human body. This is very problematic and could limit the use of the devices in surgery. It is the goal of this research to develop a gripper that uses theGracias Laboratory's existing joints in conjunction with mechanical components to decrease the closing time. The purpose of including the mechanical components is to induce a state of instability at which time a small perturbation would cause …

Three Dimensional Finite Element Simulation Of Polymer Melting And Flow In A Single-Screw Extruder : Optimization Of Screw Channel Geometry, Atakan Altinkaynak Jan 2010

Three Dimensional Finite Element Simulation Of Polymer Melting And Flow In A Single-Screw Extruder : Optimization Of Screw Channel Geometry, Atakan Altinkaynak

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Single-screw extrusion is one of the widely used processing methods in plastics industry, which was the third largest manufacturing industry in the United States in 2007 [5]. In order to optimize the single-screw extrusion process, tremendous efforts have been devoted for development of accurate models in the last fifty years, especially for polymer melting in screw extruders. This has led to a good qualitative understanding of the melting process; however, quantitative predictions of melting from various models often have a large error in comparison to the experimental data. Thus, even nowadays, process parameters and the geometry of the extruder channel …

Advanced Mechanics Of Materials With Microstructure, Shreehari Elangovan Jan 2010

Advanced Mechanics Of Materials With Microstructure, Shreehari Elangovan

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The study of advanced materials aimed at improving human life has been performed since time immemorial. Such studies have created everlasting and greatly revered monuments and have helped revolutionize transportation by ushering the age of lighter–than–air flying machines. Hence a study of the mechanical behavior of advanced materials can pave way for their use for mankind’s benefit. In this school of thought, the aim of this dissertation is to broadly perform two investigations. First, an efficient modeling approach is established to predict the elastic response of cellular materials with distributions of cell geometries. Cellular materials find important applications in structural …

Gains In Knowledge And Perception Of Engineering After Participation In An Engineering Design Web-Experience Are Gender-Dependent, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow, Gail Wheatley, David Tomasko Jan 2010

Gains In Knowledge And Perception Of Engineering After Participation In An Engineering Design Web-Experience Are Gender-Dependent, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow, Gail Wheatley, David Tomasko

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Web-based activities have the potential to teach engineering in both formal and informal science education settings, maximizing outreach efforts. To date, many activities available on the internet teach about engineering, but few allow students to truly “do” engineering.

This project utilized web animation and interaction in the design of a web-based experience focused on engineering design. In this activity, targeted toward middle school students, users played the role of engineer and engaged in the process of designing a cell phone for the older adult market. It was hoped that this web-based activity would increase participant understanding of what engineering is …
