The Relation Between The Arterial Stress And Restenosis Rate After Coronary Stenting, Linxia Gu, Shijia Zhao, Aswini K. Muttyam, James M. Hammel

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Two commercially available stents (the Palmaz–Schatz (PS) and S670 stents) with reported high and low restenosis rates, respectively, have been investigated in this paper. Finite element models simulating the stent, plaque, and artery interactions in 3 mm stenosed right coronary arteries were developed. These models were used to determine the stress field in artery walls after stent implantation. The material properties of porcine arteries were measured and implemented in the numerical models. The stress concentration induced in the artery by the PS stent was found to be more than double that of the S670 stent. It demonstrated a good correlation …

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir Sep 2010

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir

Publications (E)

The dynamics of wind turbine rotor blades are conventionally expressed in rotating frames attached to the individual blades. The tower-nacelle subsystem though, sees the combined effect of all rotor blades, not the individual blades. Also, the rotor responds as a whole to excitations such as aerodynamic gusts, control inputs, and tower-nacelle motion—all of which occur in a nonrotating frame. Multi-blade coordinate transformation (MBC) helps integrate the dynamics of individual blades and express them in a fixed (nonrotating) frame. MBC involves two steps: transforming the rotating degrees of freedom and transforming the equations of motion. Reference 1 details the MBC operation. …

Modeling Acoustic Scattering From The Seabed Using Transport Theory, Jorge Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk Sep 2010

Modeling Acoustic Scattering From The Seabed Using Transport Theory, Jorge Quijano, Lisa M. Zurk

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Radiative Transfer (RT) theory has established itself as an important tool for electromagnetic remote sensing in parallel plane geometries with random distributions of scatterers, and most recently it has also been proposed as a model for the propagation of elastic waves in layered ocean sediments. In this work the capabilities of this model are illustrated, as the RT method is used to predict backscattering strength from laboratory models of random media. The RT model is characterized by its flexibility on accommodating scatterers in a broad variety of sizes, shapes, and acoustic contrast relative to the background media. Additionally, this formulation …

Development Of A Pseudo-Uniform Structural Velocity Metric For Use In Active Structural Acoustic Control, Jeffery M. Fisher Aug 2010

Development Of A Pseudo-Uniform Structural Velocity Metric For Use In Active Structural Acoustic Control, Jeffery M. Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Active control of sound and vibration fields has become an strong area of research over the past few decades. In regards to the active control of acoustic radiation from vibration fields, known as active structural acoustic control (ASAC), there have been many different methods employed to understand structural and acoustic relationships and to control vibrations to limit the acoustic radiation. With active sound field control, sensors, usually microphones, need to be dispersed in the sound field, or an array of microphones must be placed directly in the sound field which, in many cases, uses up too much space for practical …

Cathode Polarizations Of A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Alessandro Zampieri, Martin Ise Aug 2010

Cathode Polarizations Of A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Alessandro Zampieri, Martin Ise

Faculty Publications

The concentration, activation, and total polarizations of the cathode in a cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) were theoretically and experimentally investigated. In the theoretical analysis, the exchange current density of the charge transfer was considered to be dependent on the PO2 determined by the preceding O2 diffusion, resulting in an interrelationship between activation and concentration polarizations. The established nonlinear polarization equations were then applied to solve the key parameters with area specific resistances and overpotentials of the polarizations experimentally measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on an operating cathode-supported SOFC. To ensure the consistency and meaningfulness of …

Optimization Of Selective Laser Sintering Process For Fabrication Of Zirconium Diboride Parts, Ming-Chuan Leu, Shashwatashish Pattnaik, Greg Hilmas

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) was investigated to fabricate Zirconium Diboride (ZrB2) parts for ultra-high temperature applications. Experiments were conducted to determine values of SLS process parameters (laser power, scan speed, line spacing, and layer thickness) that can be used to build ZrB2 parts with high integrity and sharp geometrical features. A sacrificial plate with a proper number of layers (determined from experimentation) separated from the main part was built in order to reduce thermal gradients when building the main part. The sacrificial plate was found to assist in eliminating cracks in the bottom of the main part. …

Bioactive glasses are more promising than biopolymers in fabricating scaffolds for bone tissue repair because they convert to hydroxyapatite, when implanted in vivo. Both direct and indirect selective laser sintering (SLS) methods of 13-93 bioactive glass were considered in this research to study the feasibility of fabricating scaffolds for bone repair applications. Stearic acid was used as the binder in the indirect method to fabricate the scaffolds. The green scaffolds underwent binder burnout and sintering at various soaking conditions between 675⁰C and 700⁰C, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 23.6 MPa, which is higher than that of the human cancellous …

Additive manufacturing processes suffer from the effect of ripples, edge rounding and surface variations. To reduce their effect, ideal process parameters for the laser deposition process were investigated. Also, a new method was identified to analyze deposits by accurately plotting their contours. This was achieved through point cloud data of the deposits generated using coordinate measurement and 3D scanning. Curve fitting was performed on the data in Matlab to generate the contours of the deposit. The intercept values, heights, and contact angle of the curves give an indication of the uniformity of deposits and aid in reducing defects.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The manufacturing of a fuel cell Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is a significant cost driver in polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell technologies, primarily due to the inclusion of expensive materials in the catalyst layer. The selective deposition of a catalyst on the MEA of a fuel cell can drastically reduce the costs depending upon the catalyst, method used for deposition, and production volume. In this paper, testing and analysis of a novel catalyst iridium oxide is discussed. The performance of the catalyst will be compared with the conventional catalysts which will give us an estimate of its effectiveness however, in …

Development Of A Low Cost Imaging System For A Laser Metal Deposition Process, Shyam Barua, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The size of the melt pool created by the laser is one of the most important quality characteristic in a laser metal deposition process. This paper discusses the development of a low-cost vision system to automatically determine the size of the melt pool for in-process control. To cope with the intense infrared signal from the laser and melt pool, external ultraviolet illumination is paired with narrow bandpass filters on a usb microscope to achieve a clear image of the melt pool. The sensitivity of the melt pool to changes in system parameters and various substrate materials are also evaluated.

Effect Of Different Graphite Materials On Electrical Conductivity And Flexural Strength Of Bipolar Plates Fabricated By Selective Laser Sintering, Nannan Guo, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Graphite is an excellent material for bipolar plates used in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell due to its great chemical resistance, but the brittle nature makes it difficult to manufacture. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) based on layer-by-layer manufacturing technology can fabricate graphite bipolar plates with complex gas flow channels. To improve the performance of bipolar plates including electrical conductivity and flexural strength, different graphite materials (natural graphite, synthetic graphite, carbon black, and carbon fiber) were investigated to fabricate test samples. These samples then went through post processing including carbonization and infiltration. The results show that bipolar plates with electrical …

Multi-Axis Planning System (Maps) For Hybrid Laser Metal Deposition Processes, Frank W. Liou, Jianzhong Ruan, Todd E. Sparks

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper summarizes the research and development of a Multi-Axis Planning System (MAPS) for hybrid laser metal deposition processes. The project goal is to enable the current direct metal deposition systems to fully control and utilize multi-axis capability to make complex parts. MAPS allows fully automated process planning for multi-axis layered manufacturing to control direct metal deposition machines for automated fabrication. Such a capability will lead to dramatic reductions in lead time and manufacturing costs for high-value, low-volume components with high performance material. The overall approach, slicing algorithm, machine simulation for planning validation, and the planning results will be presented.

13-93 glass is a third-generation bioactive material which accelerates the bone’s natural ability to heal by itself through bonding with surrounding tissues. It is an important requirement for synthetic scaffolds to maintain their bioactivity and mechanical strength with a porous internal architecture comparable to that of a human bone. Additive manufacturing technologies provide a better control over design and fabrication of porous structures than conventional methods. In this paper, we discuss and compare some of the common aspects in the scaffold fabrication using two such processes, viz. selective laser sintering (SLS) and freeze extrusion fabrication (FEF). Scaffolds fabricated using each …

Uncertainty Analysis In Laser Deposition Finish Machining Operations, Jomy Francis, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) from Missouri S&T is a laser based metals rapid manufacturing process that uses machining to improve the final part's surface finish. When free-form machining, the absence of enough deposited material results in inconsistent scallop heights which result in poor surface finish or incorrect geometry in the final part. This paper investigates a probabilistic approach to various uncertainties involved in the deposition and subsequent machining of an arbitrary part. Furthermore, this paper analyses the machine errors which makes the response of Scallop Height to exceed the predefined maximum scallop height when traveling along the tool …

Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were performed in which liquid droplets were videographically recorded impacting horizontal superhydrophobic surfaces. The superhydrophobic surfaces were micropatterned with alternating ribs and cavities and coated with a hydrophobic coating. The following surface types were also tested for comparison: smooth uncoated, micropatterned uncoated, and smooth coated surfaces. Three liquid types were used: pure water, ethanol, and a 50/50 water/glycerine mixture. Acquired data demonstrated that the maximum droplet spread diameter exhibited a greater Weber number dependence than that previously reported in the literature. The time delays between impact and maximum spread and between impact and ejection of a vertical jet were …

Determination Of Cap Model Parameters Using Numerical Optimization Method For Powder Compaction, Cong Lu Aug 2010

Determination Of Cap Model Parameters Using Numerical Optimization Method For Powder Compaction, Cong Lu

Dissertations (1934 -)

Many advantages are inherent to the successful powder metallurgy (P/M) process especially in high volume manufacturing. The strength/density distribution of the compacted product is crucial to overall success. The finite element analysis (FEA) method has become an effective way to numerically simulate strength/density distribution in a P/M compact. The modified Drucker-Prager cap (DPC) model has been shown to be a suitable constitutive relationship for metal powder compaction simulation. The calibration of the modified DPC model involves a procedure known as a triaxial compression test. Equipment for completing a triaxial compression test on metal powders is neither readily available nor standardized …

Diffuse Ultrasonic Scattering In Advanced Composites, Christer Stenström Aug 2010

Diffuse Ultrasonic Scattering In Advanced Composites, Christer Stenström

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Non destructive testing (NDT) is a noninvasive technique used for characterization and inspection of the integrity of objects. NDT is an important tool for research, manufacturing monitoring and in-service inspections. Ultrasonic testing is the most used NDT technique, which for advanced composites can identify several types of defects, like delamination and interlaminar cracks. Diffuse ultrasonics has shown to be able to extract information at the microscale of metals and therefore it is believed it can be used for advanced composites to extract microstructural information, i.e. at the level of fibers.

In this thesis, diffuse ultrasonic methods, together with spatial variance …

On Nonlinear Response Of Micro And Nano Capacitive Resonators, Martin William Knecht

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The nonlinear response of an electrostatically actuated micro/nano-resonator is investigated. The resonator is parametrically actuated using an electrostatic force with a first order fringe correction. Viscous damping and the Casimir effect are included. The resonator is studied using the Method of Multiple Scales in a direct approach of the problem and then compared numerically using a Reduced Order Model based on the application of a Galerkin procedure. In addition to primary resonance (ω0), parametric resonances are found at half (½ω0), twice (2ω 0), and three-halves ([special characters omitted]ω0) natural frequency. The frequency response is investigated for excitations near primary and …

Blast traumatic brain injury (BTBI) has become an important topic of study because of the increase of such incidents, especially due to the recent growth of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This thesis discusses a project in which laboratory testing of BTBI was made possible by performing blast loading on experimental models simulating the human head. Three versions of experimental models were prepared – one having a simple geometry and the other two having geometry similar to a human head. For developing the head models, three important parts of the head were considered for material modeling and analysis – the skin, …

Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel Aug 2010

Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is increasing interest in self-assembled materials for energy storage, flexible electronics and hydrophobic barriers. Inorganic/organic hybrid thin films and especially organosilane-based coatings already have demonstrated their ability to achieve those goals. However, some fundamental points of their formation process by molecular self-assembly remain unexplained. Although the literature widely reports the effect of temperature on the final nanostructure, until now, no one has taken into account the importance of time during their synthesis.

The main objective of this study was to improve and complete the understanding of mechanisms responsible for the self-organization of organic/inorganic molecules into a highly ordered, layered …

A Shovel With A Perforated Blade Reduces Energy Expenditure Required For Digging Wet Clay, Sridhar Harivanam, Richard W. Marklin, Paula E. Papanek, Vikram Cariapa

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: A shovel with a blade perforated with small holes was tested to see whether a worker would use less whole-body energy to dig wet clay than with a shovel with an opaque blade.

Background: A perforated shovel is hypothesized to require less whole-body energy on the basis of adhesion theory; a smaller surface area would require less physical effort to dig and release soil from the blade.

Method: The study involved 13 workers from an electric utility who dug wet clay with two 1.5-m long-handled point shovels, which differed only in blade design (perforated and opaque). Oxygen consumption was …

Pre-Swing Deficits In Forward Propulsion, Swing Initiation And Power Generation By Individual Muscles In Hemiparetic Walking, Carrie L. Peterson, Allison Kinney, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune Aug 2010

Pre-Swing Deficits In Forward Propulsion, Swing Initiation And Power Generation By Individual Muscles In Hemiparetic Walking, Carrie L. Peterson, Allison Kinney, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Clinical studies of hemiparetic walking have shown pre-swing abnormalities in the paretic leg suggesting that paretic muscle contributions to important biomechanical walking subtasks are different than those of non-disabled individuals. Three-dimensional forward dynamics simulations of two representative hemiparetic subjects with different levels of walking function classified by self-selected walking speed (i.e., limited community=0.4–0.8 m/s and community walkers=>0.8 m/s) and a speed-matched control were generated to quantify individual muscle contributions to forward propulsion, swing initiation and power generation during the pre-swing phase (i.e., double support phase proceeding toe-off). Simulation analyses identified decreased paretic soleus and gastrocnemius contributions to forward propulsion …

Relationships Between Muscle Contributions To Walking Subtasks And Functional Walking Status In Persons With Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Allison Kinney, Carrie L. Peterson, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune Aug 2010

Relationships Between Muscle Contributions To Walking Subtasks And Functional Walking Status In Persons With Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Allison Kinney, Carrie L. Peterson, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Walking speed is commonly used to predict stroke severity and assess functional walking status (i.e., household, limited community and community walking status) post-stroke. The underlying mechanisms that limit walking speed (and functional walking status by extension) need to be understood to improve post-stroke rehabilitation. Previous experimental studies have shown correlations between paretic plantarflexor output during the pre-swing phase and walking speed and suggest that the paretic hip flexors can compensate in some hemiparetic subjects. Modeling and simulation studies of healthy walking have shown that the ankle plantarflexors, soleus (SOL) and gastrocnemius (GAS), and uniarticular hip flexors (IL) are essential contributors …

Design And Testing Of Orifice Valves For Use In Freight Railcars Hydraulic Suspension System, Awni K. Alshakhshir

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The work presented in this thesis describes the specific steps undertaken to design and test two spool type control valves that will be part of Amsted Rail’s innovative vertical hydraulic damper system. The design challenge lies in the requirement that these spool valves must maintain a linear relation between pressure drop, flow rate, and position, during the extension and retraction cycles of the hydraulic damper. To this end, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted on spools having different land geometries in order to acquire the optimum apertures that will produce the desired performance based on simulation data provided by …

Electrorheological Fluid Effect Of Polymer Coated Carbon Nanofibers And/Or Fullerenes In Liquid Crystals, Steven S. French Aug 2010

Electrorheological Fluid Effect Of Polymer Coated Carbon Nanofibers And/Or Fullerenes In Liquid Crystals, Steven S. French

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

An ER fluid is a ‘smart’ visco-elastic material, with flow properties influenced by external electric fields, whereby its viscosity increases within the field and returns to its inherent viscosity without the field present. This unique behavior opens many possibilities for new technologies. The optimization of ER fluid performance depends on the chemical and structural compositions of the particles in suspension and the suspension itself. Recent inclusion of nano-particles within ER fluids has shown a relationship to favorable ER trends. Therefore, this research involved nano-laden ER fluid samples of fullerenes (C60) and/or polymer coated carbon nano-fibers as the dispersed phases. These …
