Heat Transfer In Rarefied Gas At A Gas-Solid Interface, Yaşar Demirel, Satish C. Saxena Feb 1996

Heat Transfer In Rarefied Gas At A Gas-Solid Interface, Yaşar Demirel, Satish C. Saxena

Papers in Physical Chemistry

Modified expressions for the heat-transfer fluxes at the interface of a solid surface and a gas are given for different Knudsen-number regimes. These expressions for diatomic gases contain both a gas-reflection and a thermal accommodation coefficient. Parallel-plate, coaxial-cylindrical and concentric spherical surfaces are considered. A general expression for the thermal accommodation coefficient is based on experimental data. Sample numerical calculations of heat flux in different heat-transfer regimes are presented in terms of the reciprocal Knudsen number.

Real Time Control Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Using Neuro-Fuzzy Controllers, Amitava Jana Jan 1996

Real Time Control Of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Using Neuro-Fuzzy Controllers, Amitava Jana

Dissertations

The problem of real time control of a nonlinear dynamic system using intelligent control techniques is considered. The current trend is to incorporate neural networks and fuzzy logic into adaptive control strategies. The focus of this work is to investigate the current neuro-fuzzy approaches from literature and adapt them for a specific application. In order to achieve this objective, an experimental nonlinear dynamic system is considered. The motivation for this comes from the desire to solve practical problems and to create a test-bed which can be used to test various control strategies. The nonlinear dynamic system considered here is an …

Investigation Of Dynamic Friction In Lubricated Surfaces, Hanuman Rachoor Jan 1996

Investigation Of Dynamic Friction In Lubricated Surfaces, Hanuman Rachoor

Dissertations

The research reported in this dissertation is concerned with the development of friction models for lubricated contacts. A few analytical models have been developed to investigate the friction under dynamic velocity conditions. In this study, two different tribological situations such as conformal and non-conformal contacts have been chosen. Friction modeling covers boundary, mixed and full fluid film friction regions. A new theory based on the elastic properties of the surface materials, and fluid film properties of the lubricant at the contact has been developed to determine the dynamic friction in boundary, mixed and full hydrodynamic lubrication regions. In the full …

Design For Quality Manufacturability Analysis Of Total Nonconformity Damaged Parts, Samir R. Gami Jan 1996

Design For Quality Manufacturability Analysis Of Total Nonconformity Damaged Parts, Samir R. Gami

Theses

The competitive nature of modern manufacturing, demands that innovative approaches be applied in order to have a competitive edge. Shortening the product development cycle, the period from initial design to full production, is a priority for most manufacturers today. The DFQM methodology addresses the issue of quality manufacturability (QM) - the likelihood that defects will occur during manufacture of a product in a standard plant. As a consequence, DFQM helps to shorten the design cycle time. The DFQM architecture identifies a variety of design factors and variables that influence specific defects. This process of influencing defects can be described by …

Design And Analysis Of Environmentally Safe Cooling Systems For Machine Tools, Haiping Xu

Theses

Many cooling systems of metal cutting and both their advantages and disadvantages have been reviewed. The cutting forces' relationships, stress distribution, energy consumption and heat generation of orthogonal processes are discussed. A two-dimensional finite element model has been developed to design and analyze a new proposed cooling device, which comes from the idea of "A Novel Cooling Device" proposed by Billatos et al. First, a thermal calculation is completed to compare the temperature difference between two different shapes of coiled pipe. Then, three different cutting conditions, which were considered in the experiments by Childs et al, are conducted under three …

Energy Savings From Repair Of Uncontrolled Airflow In Eighteen Small Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr. Jan 1996

Energy Savings From Repair Of Uncontrolled Airflow In Eighteen Small Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr.

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Uncontrolled airflow, including duct leakage, pressure imbalances caused by closed interior doors, and exhaust/intake airflow imbalance, was characterized in 70 commercial buildings. In 18 of these buildings, uncontrolled airflows were repaired and energy savings from these repairs were monitored. In most buildings the retrofit was duct repair. In other cases, outdoor airflow was reduced and return air transfers were provided. Cooling energy use was reduced by an average 15.1% in these 18 buildings. With an average repair cost of $455 and average cooling energy savings of $195 per year, uncontrolled airflow retrofits proved to be very cost-effective. Various factors indicate …

The Steady Boundary Layer Due To A Fast Vortex, Andrew J. Bernoff, Harald J. H. M. Van Dongen, Seth Lichter Jan 1996

The Steady Boundary Layer Due To A Fast Vortex, Andrew J. Bernoff, Harald J. H. M. Van Dongen, Seth Lichter

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A point vortex located above and convected parallel to a wall is an important model of the process by which a boundary layer becomes unstable due to external disturbances. Often it has been assumed that the boundary layer due to the passage of the vortex is inherently unsteady. Here we show that for a vortex convected by a uniform shear flow, there is a steady solution when the speed of the vortex cv is sufficiently fast. The existence of the steady solution is demonstrated analytically in the limit of large vortex velocity (cv→∞) and numerically …

Termes De Signes Positif Et Négatif En Analyses Exergétiques Des Flux De Chaleur, Jim Mcgovern, Pierre Le Goff Jan 1996

Termes De Signes Positif Et Négatif En Analyses Exergétiques Des Flux De Chaleur, Jim Mcgovern, Pierre Le Goff

Articles

In various technical plants there are heat transfer rates at temperatures above that of the environment and other simultaneous heat transfer rates at temperatures below the temperature of the environment. This is the case in cryogenic industrial processes where a cooling effect is produced from a heat source. This is also the case for all absorption refrigeration plants or absorption plants that provide refrigeration and heat pumping, notably for air-conditioning of buildings. In these cases exergetic analysis leads to equations in which some terms are positive and others are negative. This can pose problems in the definition of exergetic, or …

The tools offered by MATLAB's Signal Processing Toolbox, can help to make these concepts more tangible and provide a perspective for students. Some basic tools relevant to an undergraduate DSP course will be introduced, including examples of tool use and graphic results. The tools presented will be applied in the areas of synthesis and analysis of signals, FFT computation, impulse response …

Knowledge-Based System For Casting Process Selection, Ahmet Er, Edward Sweeney, Voya Kondic Jan 1996

Knowledge-Based System For Casting Process Selection, Ahmet Er, Edward Sweeney, Voya Kondic

Articles

Design of casting entails the knowledge of various interacting factors that are unique to casting process, and, quite often, product designers do not have the required foundry-specific knowledge. Casting designers normally have to liaise with casting experts in order to ensure the product designed is castable and the optimum casting method is selected. This two-way communication results in long design lead times, and lack of it can easily lead to incorrect casting design. A computer-based system at the discretion of a design engineer can, however, alleviate this problem and enhance the prospect of casting design for manufacture. This paper proposes …

A Finite Element Model Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations In Rayleigh Flow, Carlos A. Gutierrez, Walter Eversman Jan 1996

A Finite Element Model Of Thermoacoustic Oscillations In Rayleigh Flow, Carlos A. Gutierrez, Walter Eversman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The work reported here describes a portion of the development of a finite element model of thermoacoustic oscillations in ducted flows, including three dimensional geometries and nonuniform mean flows with steady heat addition. The thermoacoustic problem is not modeled by a form of the convected wave equation but instead by the conservation equations in primitive form. In this paper the three-dimensional model is reduced to one dimension, applicable to a uniform geometry, but allowing an axially nonuniform flow with sharp gradients in temperature, density, and Mach number. The steady mean flow is computed as a Rayleigh flow. Calculations are shown …

Investigation Of Electrotribological And Arc Erosion Behavior Of Cu-15vol.%Cr In Situ Composite, Zhongyu Chen Jan 1996

Investigation Of Electrotribological And Arc Erosion Behavior Of Cu-15vol.%Cr In Situ Composite, Zhongyu Chen

Masters Theses

Electrotribological and arc erosion behavior of Cu-15vol.%Cr in situ composite was investigated in terms of coefficient of friction, interfacial resistance, bulk temperature, and wear rate as a function of normal pressure, sliding speed, and electrical current. Microstructural change due to electrical sliding was studied to understand wear mechanisms. Cu-15vol.%Cr in situ composite was selected in this research because it exhibits an excellent combination of mechanical strength and electrical/thermal conductivity.

It was found that the average coefficient of friction decreased with increasing electrical current under dry electrical sliding. The average coefficient of friction was lower under lubricated electrical sliding than that …
