This thesis describes the derivation of a new set of nonlinear, 6--DOF equations of motion of a receiver aircraft undergoing an aerial refueling, including the effect of time-varying mass and inertia properties associated with the fuel transfer and the tanker's vortex induced wind effect. Since the center of mass of the receiver is time--varying during the fuel transfer, the equations are written in a reference frame that is geometrically fixed in the aircraft. The major purpose of this study was to investigate failure of composite laminates with multiple unloaded holes in close proximity. The least square boundary collocation method for anisotropic materials was utilized to determine the state of stress. The approach utilized collocation on both the internal and external boundaries, making it relatively easy to implement. The method compared favorably to both published and finite element solutions. A failure prediction approach for an infinite, symmetric and balanced laminate, with two holes in close proximity was presented. Silicon chips continue to grow in capabilities, complexity and performance. Silicon chips typically integrate functional components such as logic and level two (L2) cache memory in their architecture. This functional integration of logic and memory results in improved performance of the chip. However, the integration also introduces a layer of complexity in the thermal design and management of silicon chips. Closed-form analytical solutions for laminated composite beams with tubular and rectangular cross-sections are developed for evaluating the thermal induced stresses. The derivations are based on modified lamination theory and parallel axis theorem. The present approach includes variation of ply stiffness along the contour of the cross-section. The interlaminar shear stress of cantilever composite beam with rectangular cross-section under a transverse load is analytically proved to be independent of temperature change in uniform temperature environment. The objective of the research was to develop an understanding of how a flame propagates through an electronic enclosure. FLUENT®, a Navier-Stokes solver, was chosen due to its widespread commercial use, the availability of turbulence models and its ability to handle combustion. The relevance of this study with respect to the aerospace and domestic appliance industry was shown through case reports. Initial observations were made on arc discharges, chemical compounds and their relevance to establishing the flame. Experimental bench tests highlighted the instigating factors for flame ignition. The principal investigation undertaken in this research is the development and subsequent implementation of a feedback linearizing nonlinear controller and extended Kalman filter for a laboratory-based Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) device. The Maglev hardware is both highly nonlinear and open-loop unstable in its dynamic response. The control and estimation scheme proposed in this work is first validated using an increasingly sophisticated level of simulations. For the performance verification of the controller, a new set of nonlinear, 6-DOF, rigid body equations of motion for the receiver aircraft has been used. Closed form expressions for determining the displacement and twisting angle of tapered composite tubes are developed. The analytical expressions are developed based on the modified laminated plate theory which includes the tubular wall curvature of the laminate. It is found that the axial deformation and the twisting angle calculated by the current method agree well with the results obtained from the finite element method. The project considers the problem of motion synchronization of free flying robotic spacecraft and serviceable floating objects in space. The synchronization maneuvers are based on sample and hold nonlinear translational and attitude control laws. GPS pseudorange signals and a vision based sensor unit are modeled to give position measurements; position and velocity estimates are extracted from the measurements based on Extended Kalman Filter models. The present research is an experimental study of the enhancement of boiling heat transfer using microporous coating techniques. The current research is divided into four major phases. During the first phase, the effects of different metal particle sizes in the coating compound for thermally non-conductive microporous coating on pool boiling performance of refrigerants and water are investigated. The test surfaces, solid copper blocks with 1-cm² base, were tested at atmospheric pressure in saturated FC-72, R-123, and water. Results showed that the surface treatment by non-conductive microporous coating significantly enhanced both nucleate boiling and critical heat flux of all three refrigerants. …

Though several theoretical models predict a high thermal conductivity for CNT reinforced polymer composites, the experimental validation are not so encouraging.
