Direct Numerical Simulation Of Transverse Ripples: 1. Pattern Initiation And Bedform Interactions, ‪Nadim Zgheib, J. J. Fedele, D. C. J. D. Hoyal, M. M. Perillo, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results of coupled direct numerical simulations between flow and a deformable bed in a horizontally periodic, turbulent open channel at a shear Reynolds number of Reτ = 180. The feedback between the temporally and spatially evolving bed and the flow is enforced via the immersed boundary method. Using the near-bed flow field, we provide evidence on the role of locally intense near-bed vortical structures during the early stages of bed formation, from the emergence of quasi-streamwise streaks to the formation of incipient bedform crestlines. Additionally, we take a new look at a number of defect-related bedform interactions, …

Coupled bed-flow direct numerical simulations investigating the early stages of pattern formation and bedform (ripple) interactions were examined in a previous paper (Part 1), making use of the resolved flow field. In this paper (Part 2), we compare our results to published experimental data and provide an extensive quantitative analysis of the bed using spectral analysis and two-point correlations. The effect of the mobile rippled bed on the flow structure and turbulence is investigated locally (at specific streamwise locations) and over the entire computational domain. We show that developing ripples attain a self-similar profile in both the shape and the …

Responsiveness Comparison Between A Lift-Type And Drag-Type Rotor In Waves, Yingchen Yang, Fredrick A. Jenet, Deyanira Jimenez, Brandon Benavides, Jesus Cerda, Angel Lopez

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Our recent progress on development of a vertical-axis unidirectional rotary wave energy converter (WEC) is discussed in this work. The WEC features a vertical-axis rotor that preforms unidirectional rotation in waves. The vertical axis arrangement makes the WEC respond well to waves from any direction with no realignment needs. And, the unidirectional behavior of the rotor promises no wave frequency discrimination, which is in comparison to reciprocating WECs that employ the resonant principle and are very frequency-specific. In our earlier proof-of-concept studies, we have successfully demonstrated two types of rotor designs: a lift type employing hydrofoil blades and a drag …

Single Tower Crane Allocation Models Using Ant Colony Optimization, Carlos Abelardo Treviño Dec 2017

Single Tower Crane Allocation Models Using Ant Colony Optimization, Carlos Abelardo Treviño

Theses and Dissertations

The construction industry greatly benefits from the utilization of heavy machines and equipment to accomplish successful projects. Tower cranes, in specific, have a crucial role in the transportation of material loads across the site. Because these machines are fixed to the ground, it is essential for planners and managers to position them in a location that provides the most efficient transfer of materials possible. This is commonly known as the tower crane allocation problem, and many researchers have attempted to optimize the tower crane location using mathematical, artificial intelligence, and simulation approaches. However, many works from the literature contain critical …

Design Of Metal Oxides/Metal Sulfides For The Improvement Of Sodium Ion Batteries, David E. Flores

Theses and Dissertations

Herein, the improvement in performance for sodium ion batteries (NIBs) is discussed from available literature and work conducted in the laboratory setting to demonstrate the ability of sodium to perform in the world of energy storage. The reason that sodium is being explored as an alternative to Lithium in energy storage devices is because of the potential depletion of the lithium in the world causing lithium prices to surge. Researchers show that many Sn, Sb, Ge, and other composites perform well as anode materials within NIBs. The research conducted in the dissertation applies the Forcespinning method to produce fibers for …

Study Of Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Systems For Concentrated Solar Power Plants, Hermes Chirino Dec 2017

Study Of Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Systems For Concentrated Solar Power Plants, Hermes Chirino

Theses and Dissertations

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) using phase change material (PCM) as the storage medium in the Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system is a promising technology for large scale utilization of solar thermal energy because heat latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems can store more energy as the latent heat during the melting process.

This study analyzes the different dimensionless parameters from the 1-D transient enthalpy-based mathematical model used to simulate the heat transfer and flow within the LHTES system. These dimensionless parameters are varied and analyzed with the main objective of increasing thermal energy storage efficiency and exergy efficiency of …

Nitrogen Doped Carbon Nanofibers Derived From Water-Soluble Precursors, Lee Cremar, Ben Jones, Nicole Martinez, Gustavo Mejia, Hilario Cortez, Edgar Muñoz, Rocío Nava, Karen Lozano

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Nitrogen doped carbon fibers were synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a water soluble precursor. The PVA fine fibers were first developed by centrifugally spinning an aqueous based solution using Forcespinning® technology. The precursor fibers were then exposed to sulfuric acid vapors to partially carbonize and stabilize the fibers for further heat treatment. For nitrogen doping, the fibers were exposed to two different heat treatment routes. One was under a nitrogen atmosphere at 850°C followed by exposure to ammonia gas at 500°C. The second route consisted of heating the treated fibers in pure ammonia gas only, up to 850°C. Both heating …

Suspension-Driven Gravity Surges On Horizontal Surfaces: Effect Of The Initial Shape, ‪Nadim Zgheib, T. Bonometti, S. Balachandar Nov 2017

Suspension-Driven Gravity Surges On Horizontal Surfaces: Effect Of The Initial Shape, ‪Nadim Zgheib, T. Bonometti, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results from highly resolved direct numerical simulations of canonical (axisymmetric and planar) and non-canonical (rectangular) configurations of horizontal suspension-driven gravity surges. We show that the dynamics along the initial minor and major axis of a rectangular release are roughly similar to that of a planar and axisymmetric current, respectively. However, contrary to expectation, we observe under certain conditions the final extent of the deposit from finite releases to surpass that from an equivalent planar current. This is attributed to a converging flow of the particle-laden mixture toward the initial minor axis, a behaviour that was previously reported for …

The dispersion of C60 within the polymer solution was achieved by high power sonication. The study aims to a better understanding on the effect of C60 nanoparticles on the macromolecular chains. Raman Wide Angle X Ray spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and Thermogravimetric Analysis were used to inspect the interactions between the nanofiller and macromolecular chains. The experimental results revealed a completely different behavior of fullerene dispersed within polymeric matrices than using carbon nanotubes or nanofibers as nanofiller. …

A Vertical Axis Rotor For Wave Energy Conversion, Yingchen Yang, Joab Soto, Francisco Salazar Oct 2017

A Vertical Axis Rotor For Wave Energy Conversion, Yingchen Yang, Joab Soto, Francisco Salazar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The present work augments vertical-axis unidirectional wave energy converter (WEC) designs with a new approach. The enabling technique is the hydrodynamic design of a special rotor, which consists of a series of uniquely shaped blades in a certain formation. Specifically, individual blades are realized by revolving a two-dimensional symmetric hydrofoil about its chord line. Then the blades are arranged around a vertical shaft in a desired formation to form the rotor. When driven by an approaching flow through interaction, the rotor naturally rotates about the vertical shaft in a predefined direction. The approaching flow could be from any spatial direction, …

Characterization Of Lift And Drag On Two Dimensional Airfoils With And Without Sinusoidal Leading Edges, Gregorio I. Acosta Aug 2017

Characterization Of Lift And Drag On Two Dimensional Airfoils With And Without Sinusoidal Leading Edges, Gregorio I. Acosta

Theses and Dissertations

An experimental investigation was taken on a 63-021 NACA airfoil, to characterize lift and drag and how the effects of sinusoidal leading edges affect the aerodynamic properties. A theoretical model is also purposed by implementing a perturbation on thin-airfoil theory.

Two sets of airfoils were machined and tested inside a low-speed open circuit wind tunnel. Data from a pressure scanner and particle image velocity will give an insight of how the modified leading edges affect the aerodynamic properties. A Fourier series expansion was used to solve for the lifting-line model, by use of thin-airfoil theory and complex number theory.

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis Of Railroad Bearings For Wayside Hot-Box Detector Optimization, Arthur Mealer, Constantine Tarawneh, Stephen Crown

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The railroad industry utilizes wayside detection systems to monitor the temperature of freight railcar bearings in service. The wayside hot-box detector (HBD) is a device that sits on the side of the tracks and uses a non-contact infrared sensor to determine the temperature of the train bearings as they roll over the detector. Various factors can affect the temperature measurements of these wayside detection systems. The class of the railroad bearing and its position on the axle relative to the position of the wayside detector can affect the temperature measurement. That is, the location on the bearing cup where the …

Hysteresis Heating Of Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element, Oscar O. Rodriguez, Arturo A. Fuentes, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert E. Jones Jun 2017

Hysteresis Heating Of Railroad Bearing Thermoplastic Elastomer Suspension Element, Oscar O. Rodriguez, Arturo A. Fuentes, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert E. Jones

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE’s) are increasingly being used in rail service in load damping applications. They are superior to traditional elastomers primarily in their ease of fabrication. Like traditional elastomers they offer benefits including reduction in noise emissions and improved wear resistance in metal components that are in contact with such parts in the railcar suspension system. However, viscoelastic materials, such as the railroad bearing thermoplastic elastomer suspension element (or elastomeric pad), are known to develop self-heating (hysteresis) under cyclic loading, which can lead to undesirable consequences. Quantifying the hysteresis heating of the pad during operation is therefore essential to predict …

Front Dynamics Of Elliptical Gravity Currents On A Uniform Slope, S. J. Zhu, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar, A. Ooi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In the present investigation, we report data from direct numerical simulations of elliptical, finite release, Boussinesq gravity currents propagating down a uniform slope. The study comprises a series of simulations of elliptical gravity currents on a range of slope angles. The shape parameters are varied to study the effects of the initial cross-sectional aspect ratio (Λ0) and mean height to lock radius ratio (Γ) on the dynamics of the gravity current. It is found that the long-time development of the current spatial mass distribution is influenced by its initial shape at smaller slope angles (θ=5∘ and 10∘) whereas the long-time …

The fracture analysis of the SCB was studied using two mixtures gradation, Superpave and Coarse Matrix High Binder. The aggregate phase in the model was achieved by using two-dimensional aggregate images with different angularity indexes. The study of the variability of the SCB extends to the random generation of aggregate particles and air voids in the model, in addition to changing the properties at the interface between the aggregate and mastic phases. Results indicate the strong influence of the …

Casimir And Van Der Waals Effects On Electrostatically Actuated Nems Resonator Sensors, Christian Reyes May 2017

Casimir And Van Der Waals Effects On Electrostatically Actuated Nems Resonator Sensors, Christian Reyes

Theses and Dissertations

The behavior of nano and micro-electromechanical systems (N/MEMS) cantilever beams under electrostatic actuation is studied. The cantilever system is actuated by soft AC voltage that is set to a frequency of near half natural and near natural frequency of the beam. These actuating frequencies result in primary and parametric resonances, respectively. Two methods are used to analytically model the behavior of the cantilever. The first method is Method of Multiple Scales (MMS), which is a perturbation method that works for small parameters. The second method is the Reduced Order Method (ROM), which is a Galerkin method that works for large …

Design And Implementation Of A Pid Controller For The Low-Speed Wind Tunnel, Carlos F. Vasquez May 2017

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to investigate the implementation of an external PID controller on an existing variable frequency motor drive (VFD) while using MODBUS communication to read/write data from a LabVIEW station. LabVIEW is the chosen user interface and programming language. It allows human-machine interfacing for the collecting, displaying of information, and automation of the system. The main objective was to develop a new controller to facilitate the operation of the wind tunnel. The current setup makes the operator set the motor frequency manually which then correlates to a test section wind velocity. This involved a calibration period …

Development Of Prognostic Techniques For Surface Defect Growth In Railroad Bearing Rolling Elements, Nancy De Los Santos, Robert Jones, Constantine Tarawneh, Arturo A. Fuentes, Anthony Villarreal Apr 2017

Development Of Prognostic Techniques For Surface Defect Growth In Railroad Bearing Rolling Elements, Nancy De Los Santos, Robert Jones, Constantine Tarawneh, Arturo A. Fuentes, Anthony Villarreal

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Prevention of bearing failures which may lead to catastrophic derailment is a major safety concern for the railroad industry. Advances in bearing condition monitoring hold the promise of early detection of bearing defects, which will improve system reliability by permitting early replacement of failing components. However, to minimize disruption to operations while providing the maximum level of accident prevention that early detection affords, it will be necessary to understand the defect growth process and try to quantify the growth speed to permit economical, non-disruptive replacement of failing components rather than relying on immediate removal upon detection. The study presented here …

A Vertical Axis Wave Turbine With Hydrofoil Blades, Yingchen Yang, Isaiah Diaz, Sergio Soto Quintero Feb 2017

A Vertical Axis Wave Turbine With Hydrofoil Blades, Yingchen Yang, Isaiah Diaz, Sergio Soto Quintero

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This work discusses a new wave energy converter (WEC) design that, when deployed in waves, performs unidirectional rotation about a vertical shaft. The uniqueness of this new WEC design is on utilizing omnidirectional water flow generated by waves to drive a rotor to perform unidirectional rotation about a vertical axis. This unique feature circumvents the frequency-dependent issue of common WECs, and eliminate realignment needs to cope with dynamically changing wave propagation directions. The key component of the WEC is a rotor, which has a vertical shaft with a number of blades mounted to it. Each blade has a hydrofoil-shaped cross …

Frequency Response Reduced Order Model Of Primary Resonance Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plate Resonators, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Reynaldo Oyervides Feb 2017

Frequency Response Reduced Order Model Of Primary Resonance Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plate Resonators, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Reynaldo Oyervides

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the amplitude-frequency response of soft AC electrostatically actuated MEMS clamped circular plates. Alternating Current (AC) frequency is near half natural frequency of the plate. This results in primary resonance of the system. Two methods are used and compared, namely the Method of Multiple Scales (MMS), and Reduced Order Model (ROM). Both methods are in excellent agreement for amplitudes less than 0.4 of the gap. For amplitudes between 0.4 and 1 of the gap only seven terms ROM accurately predicts the behavior of the system. The effects of the voltage and damping parameters on the frequency response …

Models For The Residual Life Of Railroad Bearing Grease In Laboratory And Industry Applications, Douglas Timmer, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert Jones Jan 2017

Models For The Residual Life Of Railroad Bearing Grease In Laboratory And Industry Applications, Douglas Timmer, Constantine Tarawneh, Robert Jones

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Adequate lubrication in railroad bearings is crucial to the safe operation of these components. An investigation of the residual life of railroad bearing grease was conducted in a laboratory setting. The data was collected using a split-split-plot design of experiments. The Oxidation Induction Time (OIT), which is the time required for the remaining antioxidants in a sample of grease to be consumed in a test, is the response variable for this study. Low values of OIT indicate small remaining amounts of antioxidants in the grease and thus small remaining residual life in the grease. OIT measurements were made using differential …

Onboard Load Sensor For Use In Freight Railcar Applications, Constantine Tarawneh, Jazmin Ley, Dylan Blackwell, Stephen Crown, Brent Wilson Jan 2017

Onboard Load Sensor For Use In Freight Railcar Applications, Constantine Tarawneh, Jazmin Ley, Dylan Blackwell, Stephen Crown, Brent Wilson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Approximately 40% of intercity freight transportation occurs by rail, making it the most widely used method of transporting large commodities. This trend is expected to persist over the next thirty years as our highway systems are strained and experiencing increased congestion and costly delays. Currently, the load of freight railcars is typically measured by weighbridges or retrofitted tracks at isolated locations. This practice is not efficient and limited by the fact that the load of the railcar cannot be monitored continuously, not to mention the inherent inaccuracies of such systems. Hence, there is great merit for an onboard load sensor …
