In recent years, the requirement to reduce the levels of aircraft noise has started to affect the airfoil design process. The multidisciplinary aerodynamic shape optimization problem is treated in this thesis using a multi-objective approach. The objectives correspond to the design of transonic airfoil sections with low drag during cruise and low trailing edge noise levels during the approach condition. The optimization …

A Pilot Model For Investigating Biodynamic Coupling Due To Aeroservoelastic Accelerations, Brandon Cowen Apr 2011

A Pilot Model For Investigating Biodynamic Coupling Due To Aeroservoelastic Accelerations, Brandon Cowen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Supersonic Transport Aircraft tend to have slender fuselages with respect to their subsonic counterparts. This design feature leads to increased aeroservoelastic bending at low resonant frequencies closer to the frequencies of pilot commands and the corresponding rigid body accelerations. Aeroelastic accelerations of certain frequencies and phase lags at the pilot station have been seen to involuntarily pass through the pilot's body to the control inceptor. When the pilot commands rigid body accelerations in phase with the structural response, the structural accelerations grow. Thus biodynamic coupling represents the coupling between the feedthrough of pilot station acceleration through the pilot's body, with …

Direct Current Electrokinetic Particle Transport In Micro/Nano-Fluidics, Ye Ai

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Electrokinetics has been widely used to propel and manipulate particles in micro/nano-fluidics. The first part of this dissertation focuses on numerical and experimental studies of direct current (DC) electrokinetic particle transport in microfluidics, with emphasis on dielectrophoretic (DEP) effect. Especially, the electrokinetic transports of spherical particles in a converging-diverging microchannel and an L-shaped microchannel, and cylindrical algal cells in a straight microchannel have been numerically and experimentally studied. The numerical predictions are in quantitative agreement with our own and other researchers' experimental results. It has been demonstrated that the DC DEP effect, neglected in existing numerical models, plays an important …

Manipulating Particles For Micro- And Nano-Fluidics Via Floating Electrodes And Diffusiophoresis, Sinan Eren Yalcin Apr 2011

Manipulating Particles For Micro- And Nano-Fluidics Via Floating Electrodes And Diffusiophoresis, Sinan Eren Yalcin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The ability to accurately control micro- and nano-particles in a liquid is fundamentally useful for many applications in biology, medicine, pharmacology, tissue engineering, and microelectronics. Therefore, first particle manipulations are experimentally studied using electrodes attached to the bottom of a straight microchannel under an imposed DC or AC electric field. In contrast to a dielectric microchannel possessing a nearly-uniform surface charge, a floating electrode is polarized under the imposed electric field.

The purpose is to create a non-uniform distribution of the induced surface charge, with a zero-net-surface charge along the floating electrode's surface. Such a field, in turn, generates an …

Perspectives On Quality Coordination And Assurance In Global Supply Chains, Ling Li, John N. Warfield Jan 2011

Perspectives On Quality Coordination And Assurance In Global Supply Chains, Ling Li, John N. Warfield

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

The 2007 recall of Berko Electric Toe-Space Heaters made in the US, the recall of backpack blowers made in Japan, the recalls of toys and pet food produced in China have exposed the potential of global supply chain disruptions. This product recall storm leads to the issue of quality assurance in global supply chain management. Product recalls indicate that manufacturing companies are particularly vulnerable to ensure quality when they source via a global supply chain with poor visibility. Obviously, a supply chain cannot afford this kind of sourcing and supply structure that threatens the supply-chain integrity. This special issue on …

Methodology To Quantify Vertical Accelerations Of Planing Craft In Irregular Waves, Jennifer Suzanne Grimsley Oct 2010

Methodology To Quantify Vertical Accelerations Of Planing Craft In Irregular Waves, Jennifer Suzanne Grimsley

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Planing craft operating in waves at high speeds can experience high, repetitive vertical accelerations that are random and nonlinear in relation to the sea condition. A proper understanding of vertical accelerations is critical to meet statistically based criteria for structural design, habitability, and equipment selection. Historically, it was assumed that planing craft vertical accelerations fit the Exponential distribution, and design methods adopted this conclusion. However, several published papers have raised doubts regarding the accuracy and validity of this Exponential distribution assumption.

The statistical behavior of planing craft vertical accelerations are examined for the Parent and Peak data sets from twenty-eight …

Analytic Construction Of Periodic Orbits In The Restricted Three-Body Problem, Mohammed A. Ghazy Jul 2010

Analytic Construction Of Periodic Orbits In The Restricted Three-Body Problem, Mohammed A. Ghazy

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the analytical solution properties surrounding a nominal periodic orbit in two different planes, the plane of motion of the two primaries and a plane perpendicular to the line joining the two primaries, in the circular restricted three-body problem. Assuming motion can be maintained in the plane and motion of the third body is circular, Jacobi's integral equation can be analytically integrated, yielding a closed-form expression for the period and path expressed with elliptic integral and elliptic function theory. In this case, the third body traverses a circular path with nonuniform speed. In a strict sense, the in-plane …

Turbulent Flow Studies Of A Scaled Model Of A Large Mining Truck - Computations And Experiment, Wayne Randolph Sexton

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modern mining operations are highly reliant on the amount of material that can be removed from the earth, transported to processing, and then processed. The companies that design and build mining dump trucks concentrate on improving the material payload capacity. Currently, the largest trucks are 400ton-class trucks. The design of these large mining dump trucks certainly does not stem from aerodynamics, but rather, from functionality and payload As a result, the shear size and asymmetric functional design creates interesting turbulent wakes on, around, and behind these trucks. This research focuses on the turbulent flow behind the truck. Computational Fluid Dynamic …

Indentation Creep Analysis For Self Similar Indenters, Sandeep V. Thube Oct 2009

Indentation Creep Analysis For Self Similar Indenters, Sandeep V. Thube

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In indentation creep experiments, it is difficult to characterize the mechanical properties of small size specimens using conventional methods. This study uses finite element modeling to investigate rate-sensitive deformation of materials with different hardness and strain rate sensitivities for self similar indenter tip geometries. The simulation model is developed using commercially available finite element software Abaqus/Standard. Our study investigates the difference between strain rate sensitivity of hardness (vH) and of flow stress (vu) and their relation to the hardness/modulus ratio. It reveals that the commonly held assumption that vH = vu is violated except for materials with low hardness/modulus …

Traditionally unplanned maintenance activities are executed as and when the resources are available. This thesis presents a method for planning and scheduling these jobs with many of the traditional Lean manufacturing principles first adapted appropriately and then applied to Lean Maintenance. This method begins with identifying the priority …

Towards The Efficient Probabilistic Characterization Of Tropical Cyclone-Generated Storm Surge Hazards Under Stationary And Nonstationary Conditions, Senanu Kudjo Agbley Jul 2009

Towards The Efficient Probabilistic Characterization Of Tropical Cyclone-Generated Storm Surge Hazards Under Stationary And Nonstationary Conditions, Senanu Kudjo Agbley

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The scarcity of observations at any single location confounds the probabilistic characterization of tropical cyclone-generated storm surge hazards using annual maxima and peaks-over-threshold methods. The EST and the JPM are indirect approaches aimed at estimating the probability distribution of the response variable of interest (i.e. storm surge) using the probability distributions of predictor variables (e.g. storm size, storm intensity etc.). In the first part of this work, the relative performance of the empirical simulation technique (EST; Borgman et al., 1992) and the joint probability method (JPM; Myers, 1970) is evaluated via stochastic simulation methods. It is shown that the JPM …

Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge Jul 2009

Stability Analysis, Modeling, Simulation And Experimental Testing Of An Ems Maglev System With Structural Flexibility, Aravind M. Hanasoge

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Vehicle-guideway interaction studies of Magnetically Levitated (Maglev) vehicles indicate that structural flexibility can adversely affect the overall stability and performance of such systems. This is one of the reasons why guideways are generally made very rigid. This in turn leads to increased cost of the overall system since guideway construction forms a significant portion of the overall cost. In this dissertation, the influence of structural flexibility on the stability of Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) Maglev systems is studied. It is shown how inherently unstable and flexible structure EMS Maglev systems can achieve guaranteed stability by using collocated actuators and sensors, along …

Numerical/Experimental Investigation Of Plunge Stage And Effect Of Donor Material In Friction Stir Welding, Saptarshi Mandal Jul 2009

Numerical/Experimental Investigation Of Plunge Stage And Effect Of Donor Material In Friction Stir Welding, Saptarshi Mandal

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) was developed in 1991 as a robust solid-state joining technique that uses a specially shaped rotating tool to generate heat and plasticize material around the tool. The tool then mixes plasticized material along the joint line to produce the weld. Over the last decade, FSW has become increasingly popular for welding aluminum. The combination of attractive properties of the weld and cost-efficiency has led researchers to investigate the feasibility of using FSW for steel. One of the major impediments for using friction stir welding for harder materials such as steel is tool wear. It is well-documented …
