Handling Of Glass Mat Thermoplastic From Manufacturing Station To Heating Station To Molding Machine, Ramulu Srinivas Neela Dec 1991

Handling Of Glass Mat Thermoplastic From Manufacturing Station To Heating Station To Molding Machine, Ramulu Srinivas Neela

Theses

GMT composite sheets are a family of continuous glass fiber roving impregnated with thermoplastic resin with parts formed by compression molding. Significance of GMT sheets comes by its cost-effective performance sufficient to penetrate automotive, industrial, construction, and other markets not willing to pay for higher cost, fiber-reinforced composite systems. GMTs in comparison to traditional sheet metals and sheet molding compounds (SMCs) are lighter, corrosion resistant, require no special storage, exhibit faster cycle times, require no chemical reaction, produce less scrap, possess recycling benefits, are ready for painting, and exhibit maximum opportunities for parts consolidation due to exceptional strength, formability, lower …

Study Of A Non-Contact Gaging System Of Inspection, Gordhanbhai Ketan Patel Dec 1991

Study Of A Non-Contact Gaging System Of Inspection, Gordhanbhai Ketan Patel

Theses

The quality control function has traditionally been performed using manual inspection methods and statistical sampling procedures. Manual inspection is generally a time - consuming procedure which involves precise, yet monotonous work. It often requires that parts be removed from the vicinity of the production machines to a separate inspection area. This causes delays and often constitutes a bottleneck in the manufacturing schedule.

As a solution to the above problem a Non - Contact Gaging System developed by Optical Gaging Products, Inc., has been used here to study the feasibility of using an automated inspection system and a procedure of developing …

Advanced Manufacturing Applications Of Cost Estimating Techniques For Metal Cutting Industries, Zubair Hamid Dec 1991

Advanced Manufacturing Applications Of Cost Estimating Techniques For Metal Cutting Industries, Zubair Hamid

Theses

In this work, different cost estimating techniques in metal cutting industry were studied. A basic understanding of estimation concepts were given. The typical breakdown of total cost was also given and discussed in details. Practical applications of cost estimating is studied. The effect of different parameters which relate to the lot sizes or quantity were discussed. All these results show that total cost is minimum at a point which is called least cost point, after that cost increases because of the addition of extra resources, in terms of man, machine and increase in administrative expenses.

Design For Manufacturability (Computer Aided Optimum Gear Design), Narayan R. Mareddy Dec 1991

Design For Manufacturability (Computer Aided Optimum Gear Design), Narayan R. Mareddy

Theses

Design for manufacturing has design as the first manufacturing step. It is important to recognize the importance of design clubing with manufacturing to reduce the production, set up time. In this thesis concepts of design, manufacturing and four different ways of bringing design and manufacturing together are discussed in detail.

As there are large number of variables in the gear rating equations, it is very difficult to achieve optimum design by manual methods unless an extensive trial and error process is carried out. An algorithm has been developed which allows rapid convergence to the optimum gear design. The algorithm has …

Automation Of Part Inspection In A Coordinate Measuring Machine, Madhu N. Kanoor Oct 1991

Automation Of Part Inspection In A Coordinate Measuring Machine, Madhu N. Kanoor

Theses

Some of the drawbacks in inspecting a part using a Direct Computer Controlled Coordinate Measuring Machine are that a programmer has to generate a part program for the inspection process, and such programs have to be generated for each part to be inspected. These programs will be restricted to a kind of CMM, thus preventing the portability of the program t o other kinds of CMM.

If a part program can be generated off line after a part has been designed in a CAD system. an operator can inspect the part without any prior knowledge of the esoteric CMM programming …

Surface topography is found to be a function of …

Investigation Of Stagnation Flow Heat Transfer For A Heated Horizontal Round Plate, Ching-Hua Wei May 1991

Investigation Of Stagnation Flow Heat Transfer For A Heated Horizontal Round Plate, Ching-Hua Wei

Dissertations

The heat transfer characteristics in stagnation flow are investigated through three cases in this study. The first is forced convection by an array of air jets; the second is free convection of a downward-facing heated round plate; the third is free convection of an upward-facing heated round plate.

The first case is investigated by systematic experiments which examine the heat transfer characteristics mainly by five air jets impinging normally to a flat plate, with varying nozzle diameters, and Reynolds numbers, at different distances between the nozzles and the plate. The empirical formulas of heat transfer around the stagnation point and …

Implementation Of Automated Assembly, Kang H. Kong May 1991

Implementation Of Automated Assembly, Kang H. Kong

Theses

Research has shown that about 60 - 80% wealth producing activities is related to manufacturing in major industrial countries.

Increased competition in industry has resulted in a greater emphasis on using automation to improve productivity and quality and also to reduce cost.

Most of the manufacturing works such as machining, painting, storage, retrieval, inspection and transportation have changed to automation successfully, except assembly. Manual assembly is predominant over automatic assembly techniques due to inherent assembly problem and the fact that the assembly machines lack the innate intelligence of human operator and lack sufficient flexibility to changeover when product designs and …

The theory was then used to predict the distribution of polymeric particulate sizes after jet milling. The agreement between the predictions and actual results was within 5 %.

Encouraged by the successful work of the simulation of the …

The application of the genetic algorithm for solving the planning problems for various printed circuit board assembly machines is presented. The genetic algorithm finds the sequence of component placement/insertion and arrangement of feeders simultaneously, for achieving the shortest assembly time. Three types of assembly planning problems are modeled such that they can be solved by the genetic algorithm. The algorithm uses links (parents) to represent possible solutions and applies genetic operators to generate new links (offspring) in an iterative procedure to obtain the optimal solution. Some examples are provided to illustrate the solutions generated by the genetic algorithm, and these …
