Scalmalloy® is a novel alloy designed to work with the unique processing inherent in additive manufacturing (AM). This alloy is post-processed using a single artificial aging treatment rather than a multistep heat treatment, as often noted in traditional manufacturing processes. Much of the literature details the impact of direct aging treatments around the temperature and time recommended by the manufacturer, 325 °C for 4 h; however, few studies have explored the impact of delayed artificial aging on the resulting mechanical and microstructural behavior. This study explored this missing link and determined the impact that the time between the fabrication of …

Multiphase Iterative Algorithm For Mixed-Integer Optimal Control, Chaoying Pei, Sixiong You, Yu Di, Ran Dai
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mixed-integer optimal control problems (MIOCPs) frequently arise in the domain of optimal control problems (OCPs) when decisions including integer variables are involved. However, existing state-of-the-art approaches for solving MIOCPs are often plagued by drawbacks such as high computational costs, low precision, and compromised optimality. In this study, we propose a novel multiphase scheme coupled with an iterative second-order cone programming (SOCP) algorithm to efficiently and effectively address these challenges in MIOCPs. In the first phase, we relax the discrete decision constraints and account for the terminal state constraints and certain path constraints by introducing them as penalty terms in the …

Modern manufacturing faces significant challenges, including efficiency bottlenecks and high error rates in manual assembly operations. To address these challenges, we implement artificial intelligence (AI) and propose a gaze-driven assembly assistant system that leverages artificial intelligence for human-centered smart manufacturing. Our system processes video inputs of assembly activities using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network for assembly step recognition, a Transformer network for repetitive action counting, and a gaze tracker for eye gaze estimation. The application of AI integrates the outputs of these tasks to deliver real-time visual assistance through a software interface that displays …

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) support industrial automation that incorporates people, hardware, signal, computation, and control using networking to achieve desired results. The complex automated CPS design demands a standard and comprehensive approach to appropriately identify the system requirements, define the architecture, and model the relationships among the software and hardware components. Systems Modeling Language (SysML) provides the capability for a comprehensive modeling to capture the desired design requirements in the systems architecture. SysML enables performance estimation of the model by analyzing constraints while identifying interactions among the components through various behavioral diagrams. In this paper, SysML is applied to the design …

Parts experience significant local thermal variations during the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) process, providing a potential source of defects. Near real-time thermal predictions can enable better process planning and facilitate corrections on subsequent layers to enable the engineering of laser parameter and scan path combinations that avoid defect inducing scenarios. This paper considers an experiment-based Discrete Green's Function (DGF) thermal model for temperature field prediction in LPBF. An analytical framework is developed and used to calculate an experimental DGF (i.e., powder bed's single pulse temperature response) from spatiotemporal Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) camera data. The extracted …

Ti-6Al-4V is a well-known alloy for its low density and excellent corrosion resistance, making it popular in aerospace, marine, medical, and automotive applications. However, at elevated temperatures, the alloy forms oxides, leading to embrittlement. In additive manufacturing, particularly in the direct energy deposition (DED) process, which involves high temperatures, the alloy experiences oxidation. An inert gas chamber provides shielding during the process but limits the size of the manufactured components, and deposition in a vacuum chamber can alter the chemical composition of the alloy. Local shielding is a technique generally used for such applications, but it uses a high volume …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mechanical behavior of Haynes282 is heavily dependent upon the microstructure state, calling for mesoscale model to study the relationship between the underlying microstructure and macroscopic performance. In this work, we employ crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) to explore the deformation mechanisms of Hanyes282 subjected to tensile (short-term) and creep (long-term) tests. Haynes282 is a newly developed Ni-based superalloy, containing relatively low volume fraction (≤20%) of spherical γ′ precipitate phase. A dislocation-density based model is developed to describe the tensile and the creep behavior, where a dimension reduction algorithm is proposed to obtain more accurate inter-particle spacing. Furthermore, dislocation-particle interaction …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Achiral metasurfaces with near-field optical chirality have attracted great attention in molecular sensing and chiral emission control. Here, the circular dichroism (CD) response of an achiral metasurface induced by spatially selective coupling with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) molecules is demonstrated. A designed achiral metasurface with a V-shaped resonator exhibits large optical chirality with a strongly dissymmetric distribution under circular polarization. By introducing a PMMA molecule layer on top of the metasurface, which covers the area with large optical chirality, CD in absorption of 0.38 and a dissymmetric factor of optical chirality gc of 0.16 are obtained. Furthermore, an analysis of the …

This research identifies and resolves inefficiencies in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) workflow of the Missouri S&T Racing Formula SAE Team’s aerodynamic development. Key bottlenecks were found in simulation runtime, laborious simulation preparation, an overly manual simulation submission process, and unchecked mesh quality. A fully reimagined workflow was implemented with simulation parameters to adjust vehicle attitudes. From this, an automated design sweep could be executed to generate aero maps of the developing vehicle using the Design Manager Project. A Python-based submission app handles the terminal interfacing and macro editing that significantly slowed the job submission process before. Using a university …

Process-Structure-Property Relationships In Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced 17-4 Ph Steel, Ben Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a metal additive manufacturing method that produces non-traditional microstructures as a result of the rapid solidification and thermal cycling inherent to the process. When using LPBF-produced material in application, these unique microstructures challenge the applicability of well-developed mechanical property databases achieved by conventional heat treatments. For wider adoption of this technology, a more holistic understanding is necessary on how process attributes develop material structure, which dictate mechanical properties. This dissertation explores the process structure-property relationships in LPBF 17-4 PH steel through systematic evaluation of atmospheric processing and heat treatment effects on microstructure and mechanical …

Influence Of Alloy Composition On The Process Robustness Of Steels Consolidated Via Laser-Directed Energy Deposition, Jonathan Kelley
Masters Theses
"To ensure consistent quality of additively manufactured parts, it is advantageous to identify alloys which can meet performance criteria while being robust to process variations. Toward this end, this work investigated the effect of alloy composition on the robustness of steels consolidated via laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED). Ultra-high-strength low-alloy steel (UHSLA) and pure iron powders were mixed in-situ to produce 10 compositions containing 10-100% UHSLA by mass. JMatPro material simulations roughly predicted phases and mechanical properties. Two sets of experiments were used to evaluate the sensitivity of as-built hardness (all 10 compositions) and tensile properties (5 select compositions) to process …

Quasi-2D perovskite made with organic spacers co-crystallized with inorganic cesium lead bromide inorganics is demonstrated for near unity photoluminescence quantum yield at room temperature. However, light emitting diodes made with quasi-2D perovskites rapidly degrade which remains a major bottleneck in this field. In this work, It is shown that the bright emission originates from finely tuned multi-component 2D nano-crystalline phases that are thermodynamically unstable. The bright emission is extremely sensitive to external stimuli and the emission quickly dims away upon heating. After a detailed analysis of their optical and morphological properties, the degradation is attributed to 2D phase redistribution associated …

Nitrogen pickup during air induction melting can result in porosity and a loss of fracture toughness in ultrahigh-strength quenched and tempered steel castings. Nitrogen atoms are easily adsorbed into liquid steel upon exposure to the air, and argon shrouding alone has limited effectiveness. Previous studies have shown that proper charge sequencing and maintaining a high amount of dissolved oxygen in the melt prior to tapping and deoxidation can limit nitrogen pickup in the melt. In the current study, the effect of melt practice and charging procedure on nitrogen pickup was studied as a function of hold time in a series …

This study explores additive manufacturing of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites using the Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) process. Carbon/Nylon 12 and Carbon/PEEK composites were fabricated and evaluated through mechanical (compression, tensile, flexural, and impact) and thermal (DSC and TGA) tests. Carbon/PEEK exhibited superior mechanical performance, with 97.5% higher tensile strength, 79.8% higher elastic modulus, and 59.6% higher flexural strength compared to Carbon/Nylon 12. Thermal testing showed that Carbon/PEEK had higher thermal stability, beginning degradation at 350 °C versus 298 °C for Carbon/Nylon. These results indicate that CBAM-fabricated Carbon/PEEK composites are suitable for applications requiring high strength and temperature resistance.
