Equilibrium And Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Thermal Conductance At Solid-Gas Interfaces, Zhi Liang, William Evans, Pawel Keblinski

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Thermal Conductance at Solid-Gas Interfaces with Different Interfacial Bonding Strengths is Calculated through Green-Kubo Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics (EMD) Simulations. Due to the Finite Size of the Simulation System, the Long-Time Integral of the Time Correlation Function of Heat Power Across the Solid-Gas Interface Exhibits an Exponential Decay, Which Contains the Information on Interfacial Thermal Conductance. If an Adsorbed Gas Layer is Formed on the Solid Surface, It is Found that the Solid-Gas Interface Needs to Be Defined at a Plane Outside the Adsorbed Layer So as to Obtain the Correct Result from the Green-Kubo Formula. the EMD Simulation Result …

Single Network Adaptive Critics Networks-Development, Analysis, And Applications, Jie Ding, Ali Heydari, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solving infinite time optimal control problems in an approximate dynamic programing framework with two-network structure has become popular in recent years. In this chapter, an alternative to the two-network structure is provided. We develop single network adaptive critics (SNAC) which eliminate the need to have a separate action network to output control. Two versions of SNAC are presented. The first version, called SNAC outputs the costates and the second version called J-SNAC outputs the cost function values. Special structure called Finite-SNAC to efficiently solve finite time problems is also presented. Illustrative infinite time and finite time problems are considered; numerical …

A New Method For Failure Modes And Effects Analysis And Its Application In A Hydrokinetic Turbine System, Liang Xie Jan 2013

A New Method For Failure Modes And Effects Analysis And Its Application In A Hydrokinetic Turbine System, Liang Xie

Masters Theses

"The traditional failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a conceptual design methodology for dealing with potential failures. FMEA uses the risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of three ranked factors to prioritize risks of different failure modes. The three factors are occurrence, severity, and detection. However, the RPN may not be able to provide consistent evaluation of risks for the following reasons: the RPN has a high degree of subjectivity, it is difficult to compare different RPNs, and possible failures may be overlooked in the traditional FMEA method. The objective of this research is to develop a …

Part Height Control Of Laser Metal Additive Manufacturing Process, Yu-Herng Pan Jan 2013

Part Height Control Of Laser Metal Additive Manufacturing Process, Yu-Herng Pan

Masters Theses

"Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) has been used to not only make but also repair damaged parts in a layer-by-layer fashion. Parts made in this manner may produce less waste than those made through conventional machining processes. However, a common issue of LMD involves controlling the deposition's layer thickness. Accuracy is important, and as it increases, both the time required to produce the part and the material wasted during the material removal process (e.g., milling, lathe) decrease. The deposition rate is affected by multiple parameters, such as the powder feed rate, laser input power, axis feed rate, material type, and part …

Consensus Protocols In Networked Multiagent Systems For Cluttered And Hostile Environments, Gerardo De La Torre, Eric N. Johnson, Tansel Yucelen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Consensus refers to the agreement of networked agents upon certain quantities of interest and has widespread applications in diverse areas in science and engineering. This paper focuses on a new consensus protocol for networked multiagent systems operating in cluttered and hostile environments. Specifically, a consensus optimization algorithm is introduced that renders the Laplacian potential to be a nonincreasing function while minimizing a cost function and satisfying state and cost constraints. In addition, we show how to choose this cost function and the aforementioned constraints in order to decay the Laplacian potential to zero strictly. The proposed framework depends on a …

Neuropredictive Control And Trajectory Generation For Slung Load Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Eric N. Johnson, Tansel Yucelen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a neuropredictive trajectory generation architecture for slung load systems. The presented architecture integrates the real-time trajectory generation method with a system uncertainty identifying neural network. It is shown that the effect of system uncertainty on a model predictive control approach can be mitigated by the use of neural networks. A numerical example of an uncertain slung load system is shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented framework.

Consensus Protocols For Networked Multiagent Systems With Relative Position And Neighboring Velocity Information, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The consensus problem appears frequently in the coordination of multiagent systems in science and engineering and involves the agreement of networked agents upon certain quantities of interest. In this paper, we focus on a new consensus protocol for networked multiagent systems. The proposed control protocol consists of a standard term capturing relative position information and a new term capturing neighboring velocity information. In particular, the addition of the latter term results in an increase of the rate of system convergence while maintaining a fixed graph structure and without increasing the maximum eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian. Furthermore, in certain cases, …

Constraint Enforcement Methods For Command Governor Based Adaptive Control Of Uncertain Dynamical Systems, Simon P. Schatz, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnsony, Florian Holzapfelz

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, research has been conducted in order to improve the transient behavior of adaptively controlled uncertain nonlinear dynamical systems. In this paper, an adaptive control architecture is extended in order to achieve predictable transient performance in the presence of state constraints. The methodology at hand is based on a robust command governor framework, which is a dynamical system adjusting the trajectory of a given command in order to track a certain desired closed-loop reference model both in transient time and steady-state. Specifically, the command, which is applied on the reference model and the actual system, is changed by the command …

Robustness Of A Derivative-Free Adaptive Control Law In The Presence Of Unmodeled Dynamics, Tansel Yucelen, Anthony J. Calise Jan 2013

Robustness Of A Derivative-Free Adaptive Control Law In The Presence Of Unmodeled Dynamics, Tansel Yucelen, Anthony J. Calise

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although adaptive control theory offers mathematical tools to achieve required system performance without excessive dependence on modeling, its application to safety-critical systems can be limited by the presence of unmodeled dynamics. This paper examines the robustness to unmodeled dynamics of a recently developed derivative-free adaptive control law. In contrast to derivative-based adaptive laws it is shown, using a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, that robustness to unmodeled dynamics is improved by increasing the adaptation gain. This is accomplished by including a bias term in the set of basic functions employed by the adaptive control law. It is shown that derivative-based adaptive laws do …

Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson Jan 2013

Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on a new connectivity control architecture for networked multiagent systems based on hybrid protocols. Specifically, for a group of agents subject to Δ-disk proximity graphs, we consider the consensus problem while preserving connectedness with a priori given bounds on the control inputs. The bounds on the control inputs are shown not to depend on potential functions or system states. Instead, the bounds are user selected continuous functions. By using the proposed framework, we show that the maximum distance among neighboring agents decreases strictly, and hence the connectivity problem is solved while satisfying the consensus objective. © 2013 …

Separate-Channel Integrated Guidance And Autopilot For Automatic Path-Following, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan, Hiroyuki Takano Jan 2013

Separate-Channel Integrated Guidance And Autopilot For Automatic Path-Following, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan, Hiroyuki Takano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An integrated guidance and autopilot scheme for a path-following uninhabited aerial vehicle is presented in this study. A fixed-wing aircraft usually performs a bank-to-turn maneuver to change its flight direction. The novel approach presented here, however, assumes that each of the three channels of the integrated guidance and autopilot can be independently designed. This concept makes the design process simple. A virtual target moving on the prespecified path for the uninhabited aerial vehicle is introduced to facilitate the algorithm development. A first-/ second order sliding structure with a second order sliding mode and a high-order sliding mode differentiator for the …

Parameter Optimization For Controlling Aluminum Loss When Laser Depositing Ti-6al-4v, Richard Charles Barclay

Masters Theses

"The ability to predict the mechanical properties of engineering materials is crucial to the manufacturing of advanced products. In the aerospace industry, Ti-6Al-4V is commonly used to build structures. Any deviation from the alloy's standard properties can prove detrimental. Thus, the compositional integrity of the material must be controlled. The ability to directly build and repair large, complicated structures directly from CAD files is highly sought after. Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology has the potential to deliver that ability. Before this process can gain widespread acceptance, however, a set of process parameters must be established that yield finished parts of …

Rotary Displacement Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Headman Sanei

Masters Theses

“This study proposes a novel piezoelectric energy harvester for rotary motion applications. It is based on an annular unimorph plate, mounted on a shaft rotating at a constant angular velocity, under constant amplitude point-wise force. The mathematical model and the analysis was proposed for the inverse problem of a rotating disk under a static stationary force. The disk, however, is assumed to be stationary subjected to a traveling force. The distributed parameter electromechanical equations governing the behavior of the system are provided in closed-form, incorporating both an AC and a simple rectifier circuit. The performance of the energy harvester was …

Manufacturing And Performance Evaluation Of Out-Of-Autoclave Sandwich Composites, Sriram Nagarajan Jan 2013

Manufacturing And Performance Evaluation Of Out-Of-Autoclave Sandwich Composites, Sriram Nagarajan

Masters Theses

"Composite sandwich structures are being increasingly employed in applications which require high strength, high in-plane and flexural stiffness coupled with a reduction in weight. Sandwich composites used in the aerospace industry are typically manufactured using high pressure autoclave processing which is expensive and time consuming. A viable low cost alternative is the Out-of-autoclave (OOA) process. One of the most dominant failure modes in sandwich composites is the debonding that occurs at the facesheet skin to core interphase leading to severe degradation of structural properties of the sandwich. A well formed adhesive bond at the skin to core interphase and improved …

Enhancement Of Vortex Induced Vibrations Using Roughness Strips, Ashwin Vinod Jan 2013

Enhancement Of Vortex Induced Vibrations Using Roughness Strips, Ashwin Vinod

Masters Theses

"The current experimental work focuses on studying the effects of surface roughness on vortex induced vibration (VIV) of an elastically mounted circular cylinder which is free to vibrate in a direction transverse to the flow. Flow separation in known to occur due to viscous effects when a fluid flows over a bluff body. The separation of fluid causes shedding of alternating vortices in the downstream region, which in turn impart an alternating force on the bluff body. The vibrations incurred due to such forces are called as Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) and have been traditionally known to be harmful to …

Processing Of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Composites For Ultra High Temperature Applications Using Organosilicon Polymer Precursors, James Robert Nicholas Jan 2013

Processing Of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Composites For Ultra High Temperature Applications Using Organosilicon Polymer Precursors, James Robert Nicholas

Masters Theses

"The current work is on the development of continuous fiber reinforced ceramic materials (CFCCs) for use in ultra high temperature applications. These applications subject materials to extremely high temperatures (> 2000⁰C). Monolithic ceramics are currently being used for these applications, but the tendency to fail catastrophically has driven the need for the next generation of material. Reinforcing with continuous fibers significantly improves the toughness of the monolithic materials; however, this is a manufacturing challenge. The development of commercial, low-viscosity preceramic polymers provides new opportunities to fabricate CFCCs. Preceramic polymers behave as polymers at low temperatures and are transformed into ceramics …

Effects Of Initial Conditions On Rayleigh-Taylor Instability Using Elastic-Plastic Materials, Pamela Susan Roach Jan 2013

Effects Of Initial Conditions On Rayleigh-Taylor Instability Using Elastic-Plastic Materials, Pamela Susan Roach

Masters Theses

"When an elastic-plastic solid is accelerated by a fluid of lower density, Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) is observed, and the instability is mitigated by the material's mechanical strength, initial conditions, and the acceleration that drives the instability. Such instances of RTI are observed in supernovas, explosive welding, and inertial confinement fusion. In contrast to Newtonian fluids, experimental study of RTI in accelerated solids is traditionally hindered by difficulty to measure material properties and exceedingly small time scales. An understanding of the role initial conditions and material properties have on the growth of RTI will lead to better control of the instability. …

Development Of A Postprocessor For A Multi-Axis Cnc Milling Center, Mihir Satish Adivarekar

Masters Theses

"Most of the current college design and manufacturing curricula are primarily focused on computer aided design (CAD), while less emphasis is given to computer aided manufacturing (CAM). A great opportunity has been missed as the benefits of CAD/CAM cannot then be fully learned. Postprocessor plays a vital role in integration of CAD//CAM with computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines. Hence, postprocessor must be developed accurately. This thesis is composed of one paper. Paper I proposes a novel methodology to determine compensation vectors for the post processor of multi-axis milling center. The new approach that has been implemented in Paper I involves …

A Generalized Approach For Compliant Mechanism Design Using The Synthesis With Compliance Method, With Experimental Validation, Ashish B. Koli

Masters Theses

"Compliant mechanisms offer numerous advantages over their rigid-body counterparts. The synthesis with compliance technique synthesizes compliant mechanisms for conventional rigid-body synthesis tasks with energy/torque specifications at precision positions. In spite of its usefulness, the method suffers from some limitations/problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate these sensitivities with the synthesis with compliance technique and improve upon existing method. A new, simple but efficient, method for synthesis with compliance using an optimization approach is proposed, and its usefulness and simplicity demonstrated over the existing method. The strongly and weakly coupled system of kinematic and energy/torque equations in the existing …

A Friction Prediction Model For Small Si Engines, Avinash Singh Jan 2013

A Friction Prediction Model For Small Si Engines, Avinash Singh

Masters Theses

"A substantial portion of the input fuel energy in an SI engine is lost towards overcoming the frictional forces from various rubbing parts. These frictional losses are very significant in small engines and these losses can be reduced by incorporating some design changes. A semi-empirical friction prediction model was studied and modified with the help of the experimental results for small SI engines. This model is dependent upon engine geometry and speed. The model divides the frictional work into different sub-assemblies of the engine and these sub-assemblies are in turn divided to determine the friction associated with individual components. A …

Paste Development And Co-Sintering Test Of Zirconium Carbide And Tungsten In Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication, Ang Li Jan 2013

Paste Development And Co-Sintering Test Of Zirconium Carbide And Tungsten In Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication, Ang Li

Masters Theses

"Ultra-high temperature ceramics are being investigated for future use in aerospace applications due to their superior thermo-mechanical properties, as well as oxidation resistance, at temperatures above 2000°C. However, their brittle properties make them susceptible to thermal shock failure. Components fabricated as functionally graded materials (FGMs) can combine the superior properties of ceramics with the toughness of an underlying refractory metal by fabricating graded composites. This paper discusses the grading of two materials through the use of a Freeze-form Extrusion Fabrication (FEF) system to build FGMs parts consisting of zirconium carbide (ZrC) and tungsten (W). Aqueous-based colloidal suspensions of ZrC and …
