Selective Laser Melting 17-4 Ph Stainless Steel And The Effect Of Varied Thermal Treatments On Fatigue Behavior., Sean Daniel Dobson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fatigue failure is the leading source of loss in industry. In order for new means of manufacturing to move towards mainstream use a complete understanding of material and mechanical behavior must be gained. This endeavor seeks to aide in that task by observing the fatigue behavior of selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing (AM) specimens and the effect of differing thermal treatment conditions for an optimized AM process. Stainless steel 17-4 PH specimens were fabricated using SLM AM and thermally treated to three conditions: as-built, solutionized and hardened, and direct hardened. These specimens were characterized for material (powder quality, density, …

Enhancement Of Phase Change Material Sorbitol By Nanoparticle Inclusion For Improving Thermal Energy Storage Capabilities, Joshua Kasitz

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Thermal management of electronic devices has become an increasingly vital field of study with the rapid miniaturization of many key electrical components. With the significant improvement of semiconductor manufacturing and intensified focus on interconnects, electronic devices have decreased in size at an incredible rate. Decreasing spatial requirements is essential to improving device capabilities as the electronic system is able to incorporate more components. Currently, electronic systems are drastically limited by the capabilities of their cooling mechanisms. Smaller devices lead to large increases in the energy density of the system and require more powerful cooling systems to maintain proper component operating …

Effects Of Polytetrafluoroethylenemicro–Particles On Mechanical Andtribological Properties Of Glass Fiberreinforced Polyoxymethylene, Kunnan Singh Jasbir Singh May 2020

Effects Of Polytetrafluoroethylenemicro–Particles On Mechanical Andtribological Properties Of Glass Fiberreinforced Polyoxymethylene, Kunnan Singh Jasbir Singh

Student Works (2020-2029)

Reinforcing polyoxymethylene (POM) with glass fibers (GF) enhances its mechanical properties, but at the expense of tribological performance. Formation of a transfer film to facilitate tribo–contact is compromised due to the abrasiveness of GF. As a solid lubricant, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) significantly improves friction and wear resistance. The effects of chemically etched PTFE micro–particles on the fiber– matrix interface of POM/GF/PTFE composites have not been systematically characterized. This research investigated the effects of PTFE micro–particles on mechanical and tribological properties of POM/GF/PTFE composites. Since PTFE is immiscible with most polymers, the surface was etched using sodium naphthalene salt dissolved …

In-Service Performance Evaluation Of Concrete Sloped End Treatments In Iowa, Jessica Lingenfelter

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sloped end treatments were historically developed as low-cost, low-maintenance end treatments for rigid features like concrete barriers and bridge rails. Crash testing indicated that sloped end treatments are associated with significant instability for impacting vehicles. However, the in-service performance of these features has not been evaluated. An in-service performance evaluation (ISPE) was performed to evaluate vehicle crashes with sloped end treatments in Iowa between 2008 and 2017. Researchers generated a geographic inventory of sloped end treatment locations, reviewed crash narratives and scene diagrams for crashes near these sloped end treatments, and calculated an estimated crash rate and crash cost for …

Evaluation And Update Of Mash Test Vehicles, Kellon B. Ronspies

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) requires full-scale crash testing of roadside features using worst practical impact conditions. Vehicle selection for full-scale crash testing is intended to be representative of the contemporary passenger vehicle fleet. Researchers at the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF) investigated attributes of passenger vehicle sales to determine if the vehicle selection criteria shown in MASH should be revised to accommodate changes in the vehicle fleet. A methodology was considered to affordably re-analyze the vehicle fleet when necessary to ensure MASH vehicle selection criteria are reflective of vehicles currently on roadways.

Representative vehicles were documented using …

Thermal Modeling Of Additive Manufacturing Using Graph Theory: Validation With Directed Energy Deposition, Jordan Severson Apr 2020

Thermal Modeling Of Additive Manufacturing Using Graph Theory: Validation With Directed Energy Deposition, Jordan Severson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Metal additive manufacturing (AM/3D printing) offers unparalleled advantages over conventional manufacturing, including greater design freedom and a lower lead time. However, the use of AM parts in safety-critical industries, such as aerospace and biomedical, is limited by the tendency of the process to create flaws that can lead to sudden failure during use. The root cause of flaw formation in metal AM parts, such as porosity and deformation, is linked to the temperature inside the part during the process, called the thermal history. The thermal history is a function of the process parameters and part design.

Consequently, the first step …

Laser Micropatterning Effects On Corrosion Resistance Of Pure Magnesium Surfaces, Yahya Efe Yayoglu Apr 2020

Laser Micropatterning Effects On Corrosion Resistance Of Pure Magnesium Surfaces, Yahya Efe Yayoglu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnesium and its alloys are good candidates to manufacture medical implants. They have excellent biocompatibility and because they biodegrade secondary surgical operation to remove the implant could be eliminated. However, in aqueous environments, magnesium alloys rapidly corrode, resulting in premature degradation of the implant along with biologically intolerable hydrogen gas generation. In literature, there are multiple studies focused on creating water repelling hydrophobic magnesium surfaces in order to decrease corrosion rates. Hydrophobic properties can be achieved by creation of a roughness profile on an initially smooth surface combined with a treatment that reduces the free surface energy. In theory, hydrophobic …

Quantifying Wicking In Functionlized Surfaces, Maureen Winter, Ryan Regan, Alfred Tsubaki, Craig Zuhlke, Dennis Alexander, George Gogos

UCARE: Research Products

Wicking remains the enigmatic key factor in many research areas. From boiling in power plants, to anti-icing on plane wings, to medical instruments, to heat pipes, efficiency and safety depend on how quickly a surface becomes wet. Yet wicking remains difficult to quantify and define as a property of the surface. This experiment strives to measure the wicking property by examining the rate that a liquid can be pulled out of a container. A superhydrophilic surface is placed in contact with the liquid at the bottom of a tube so that the volume flow rate across the surface can be …

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Natural materials are made from weak constituents, yet exhibit an excellent synergy of high stiffness, strength, and damage-tolerance. They consist of alternate layers of the hard and soft phases with a complex hierarchical structural organization. The ice-templating technique provides an approach to fabricate multilayered architectures for engineering applications. In this technique, an aqueous ceramic suspension is solidified unidirectionally leading to phase separation into alternating layers of ice-crystals and ceramic particles. Ice-crystals are sublimated by freeze-drying process and resultant ceramic foams are sintered to impart strength. The fabricated sintered ceramic foams contain alternate layers of oriented ceramic lamella walls and pores. …

Through-Thickness Reinforcement And Repair Of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure And Tension Of Adhesively Bonded Joints, Aleric Alden Sanders

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Repair and reinforcement of composite honeycomb structures is an area of concern as higher demands are being placed on high strength, lightweight structural materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics and corresponding honeycomb structures. A common issue with these structures is when a delamination in the facesheet may form and spread, leading to a failure scenario. An investigation of adding a through thickness reinforcement (TTR) to these structures at the sample level that undergo four-point-bending, tension, and joining methods is conducted throughout this thesis. The embedding of pultruded carbon fiber rods is found to be an ideal addition to composite …

Compaction And Residual Stress Modeling In Composite Manufactured With Automated Fiber Placement, Von Clyde Jamora Apr 2020

Compaction And Residual Stress Modeling In Composite Manufactured With Automated Fiber Placement, Von Clyde Jamora

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Automated fiber placement is a state-of-the-art manufacturing process that allows for complex layup patterns and can quickly place, cut, and restart composite tows. However, with this type of manufacturing process layup defects are inevitable, and manufacturing defects propagate after curing. Process modeling is the considered approach for exploring the defect prediction. Two different but related works were conducted, which are the thermochemical and hyperelastic model and the residual deformation model. For the model before cooling, a hyperelastic model and a thermo-chemical were made to simulate the compaction and heat transfer. Temperature dependent properties that are a function of degree of …

Synthesis Of Epoxy Monoethanolamide From Bauhinia Monandra Seed Oil, Adewale Adewuyi, Rotimi A. Oderinde

Makara Journal of Technology

In this study, we synthesized epoxidised monoethanolamide (EMA) from Bauhinia monandra seed oil (BMO) via a simple reaction route. In this process, BMO was transesterified to obtain a mixture of methyl esters, which was subjected to a urea adduct complexation reaction. The unsaturated methyl esters (BME) from the urea adduct complexation reaction were then epoxidised using performic acid produced in situ in a one-pot reaction system. The epoxidised methyl esters were converted to EMA by reacting them with monoethanolamine (1:10). The progression of the reaction was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and the …
