Comparative Study Of Decision Tree Models For Bearing Fault Detection And Classification, Armin Moghadam, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Fault diagnosis of bearings is essential in reducing failures and improving functionality and reliability of rotating machines. As vibration signals are non-linear and non-stationary, extracting features for dimension reduction and efficient fault detection is challenging. This study aims at evaluating performance of decision tree-based machine learning models in detection and classification of bearing fault data. A machine learning approach combining the tree-based classifiers with de-rived statistical features is proposed for localized fault classification. Statistical features are extracted from normal and faulty vibration signals though time do-main analysis to develop tree-based models of AdaBoost (AD), classification and regression trees (CART), LogitBoost …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The powder bed-based additive manufacturing (AM) process contains uncertainties in the powder spreading process and powder bed quality, leading to problems in repeatability and quality of the additively manufactured parts. This work focuses on identifying the uncertainty induced by particle size distribution (PSD) on powder flowability and the laser melting process, using Ti6Al4V as a model material. The flowability test results show that the effect of PSDs on flowability is not linear, rather the PSDs near dense packing ratios cause significant reductions in flowability (indicated by the increase in the avalanche angle and break energy of the powders measured by …

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

High entropy alloys (HEAs) can be manufactured in many conventional ways, but it becomes difficult of fabricating heterogeneous materials and structures. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method generally melts pure elemental powders or prefabricated alloy powders without alloying process. In-situ alloying in SLM, which is also called Laser Additive Alloying (LAA), using pure elemental powders becomes a promising method for creating HEA with heterogeneous structures. However, the effect of the diffusion of elements in the molten pool on the formation of HEA remains unclear. In this paper, the well-discussed Cantor HEA was studied in an in-situ alloying situation, where pure elemental …

Data-Driven Modeling Of Mechanical Behaviors Of Additively Manufactured Materials, Ziyang Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a revolutionary technology that greatly improves the flexibility of fabricating parts with complex structures and eliminates the cost of making molds. While AM techniques offer unique benefits over traditional manufacturing processes, it is challenging to predict the mechanical behaviors of additively manufactured parts based on design and process parameters. With recent advances in machine learning, data-driven methods have the potential to overcome such limitations. In this work, data-driven modeling frameworks were proposed to predict the tensile, flexural, and compressive behaviors of additively manufactured plastics and composites. Ensemble learning was used to predict the tensile strength of …

Closed Loop Recycling Of Low Friction Polymers In Fused Granule Fabrication Additive Manufacturing Processes, Neil Thompson, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Plastic waste is a critical worldwide problem that impacts additive manufacturing (AM). Extensive research has explored how plastic waste in AM can be reduced by recycling prints into new filament, with varying success. An alternative to filament-based extrusion is “fused granule fabrication” (FGF), which extrudes from pellets or granules. This method is often used for large area additive manufacturing (LAAM) of polymers. This paper expands upon the knowledge base from previous research on LAAM and examines the extent to which PETG can be recycled and reprinted through the same FGF tool without significant loss to its material properties. The metric …

Durability Of Vacuum Infusion Tooling Produced From Fused Granular Fabrication Additive Manufacturing, Nathan Northrup, Jason Weaver, Andy R. George

Faculty Publications

Large area additive manufacturing (LAAM) has the capability to create tooling that is lower cost than conventionally manufactured tooling and still has sufficient properties for many applications. A vacuum infusion mold was printed from fiberglass-ABS and evaluated for wear and suitability for small vacuum infusion runs. The mold was designed to accentuate high wear as a “worst case” scenario. The mold was able to produce 10 parts successfully before any noticeable change occurred to the surface finish. By 14 parts, the surface finish had roughened sufficiently that demolding was difficult and resulted in damage to the part. Profilometry measurements showed …

Airflow Impact Upon Remote Laser Welding Quality, Baixuan Yang

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Laser induced plasma-plume and condensed particles attenuate the laser beam energy, resulting in keyhole instability and lacking penetration. There are various airflow devices that are currently used in both industrial and laboratory laser welding settings to suppress the detrimental effect of plasma plume and hot spatters. A systematic experimental and numerical study is presented in this dissertation that investigates different external airflow effects on the remote laser welding process used in automotive manufacturing applications.

The vertical airflow impact on the remote laser welding was first studied experimentally. The airflow velocity profiles of a coaxial vertical flow device were measured using …

Prediction And Validation Of Residual Stresses In Additively Manufactured Metal Parts, Jose Mayi Rivas Jan 2022

Prediction And Validation Of Residual Stresses In Additively Manufactured Metal Parts, Jose Mayi Rivas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Selective Laser Melted (SLM) Additively Manufactured (AM) metal parts are of special interest to many industries because their designs can be made arbitrarily complex while still maintaining bulk type mechanical properties. However, the large thermal gradients inherent to the SLM process generate residual stresses (RS) and distortions that are detrimental to the fit, functionality and integrity of parts. Predicting the state of stresses in as-built 3D printed parts is a difficult problem that currently has only been approached with the use of transient thermomechanical Finite Element Models (FEMs). The nonlinearities associated with AM processes are difficult to capture in these …

Quantitative Methods For Total Lifecycle Risk Likelihood And Impact Assessment In Sustainable Product Design Decision Making, Christian Enyoghasi

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Sustainable products promise significant economic, environmental, and societal benefits. Numerous methods are available for use during the new product development process to identify alternate product designs that optimize sustainability performance. Once any such design is selected and the product is launched, many uncertainties are likely to affect its performance over the total lifecycle. Such uncertainties give rise to risks that can influence the overall product sustainability performance. However, comprehensive quantitative methods to evaluate the likelihood or the impact of different risks to enable sustainable product design decision making are lacking.

This research aims to address this gap by developing a …

In-Situ Characterization Of Surface Quality In Γ-Tial Aerospace Alloy Machining, David Adeniji Jan 2022

In-Situ Characterization Of Surface Quality In Γ-Tial Aerospace Alloy Machining, David Adeniji

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The functional performance of critical aerospace components such as low-pressure turbine blades is highly dependent on both the material property and machining induced surface integrity. Many resources have been invested in developing novel metallic, ceramic, and composite materials, such as gamma-titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl), capable of improved product and process performance. However, while γ-TiAl is known for its excellent performance in high-temperature operating environments, it lacks the manufacturing science necessary to process them efficiently under manufacturing-specific thermomechanical regimes. Current finish machining efforts have resulted in poor surface integrity of the machined component with defects such as surface cracks, …

In-Situ Characterization Of Burr Formation In Finish Machining Of Inconel 718, Hamzah M. Zannoun Jan 2022

In-Situ Characterization Of Burr Formation In Finish Machining Of Inconel 718, Hamzah M. Zannoun

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

One of the undesirable byproducts that occur during the machining process is the development of burrs, which are defined as rough excess material that forms around the geometric discontinuities of a part. Burrs are especially problematic because they have negative impacts across the triple bottom line: economic, environmental, societal. For one, they are expensive to remove because the deburring process is entirely manual and requires skill. Further, burr material is typically discarded which is adding to the already mounting waste generated from machining such as in coolant and chip disposal. Lastly, there are many societal implications, such as operator injury …
