Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Due to the high cost, complex preparation process and difficulty in structural design, the traditional methods for carbon fiber reinforced SiC ceramic composite preparation have great limitations. This paper presents a technique for the additive manufacturing multiple continuous carbon fiber bundle-reinforced SiC ceramic composite with core-shell structure using an extrusion-based technique. A conventional nozzle system was modified to print simultaneously a water based SiC paste with continuous carbon fibers. Different levels of binder contents were investigated to optimize the stickiness, viscosity, thixotropy and viscoelasticity of the paste. After sintering, SiC whiskers were generated on the surface of fiber, which is …

Spacecraft formation flying has attracted an increasing amount attention over the past several decades including a growing interest in relative motion at the collinear lib ration points. This current work builds on previous efforts by further developing and characterizing a two-level targeting (TLT) algorithm used to determine relative motion at lib ration points by performing a convergence study. A parametric study was conducted to identify the sensitivity of the algorithm to a variety of inputs and constraints. The parametric study revealed that the two-level targeting algorithm convergence properties significantly improve when using a higher order initialization estimate. The size of …

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed to study acoustic radiation in a quasi-two-dimensional nozzle with two independents spatially evolving turbulent boundary layers with an edge Mach number of 6. The emphasis of this work is to compare the radiated pressure fluctuations in a geometrically confined environment with those radiated from a single wall in an unconfined setting. The boundary-layer profile of the rms pressure fluctuation scaled by the mean shear stress at the wall is found to be in good agreement with prior flat-plate calculations at similar conditions. However, the normalized rms pressure fluctuation within the freestream p region is …

Spatial Transformation Of A Layer-To-Layer Control Model For Selective Laser Melting, Xin Wang, Robert G. Landers, Douglas A. Bristow
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique with challenges in its complexity of process parameters and lack of control schemes. Traditionally, people tried time-domain or frequency-domain control methods, but the complexity of the process goes beyond these methods. In this paper, a novel spatial transformation of SLM models is proposed, which transforms the time-domain process into a spatial domain model and, thus, allows for state-space layer-to-layer control methods. In a space domain, this also provides the convenience of modelling laser path changes. Finally, a layer-to-layer Iterative Learning Control (ILC) method is designed and demonstrates the methodology of …

High-Pressure Kinetic Interactions Between Co And H2 During Syngas Catalytic Combustion On Pdo, Ran Sui, John Mantzaras, Rolf Bombach, Meysam Khatoonabadi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The catalytic combustion of H2/CO/O2/N2 mixtures over PdO was investigated at pressures 3 to 10 bar, H2:CO volumetric ratios 1:5 to 3:1, and global equivalence ratios ψ = 0.13 and 0.23. The catalyst surface temperatures were controlled to 540-690 K, a range especially important for hybrid hetero-/homogeneous combustion approaches with large gas turbines at idle or part-load operation and for microreactors with recuperative small-scale turbines. In situ Raman measurements determined the major gas-phase species concentrations over the catalyst boundary layers in a channel-flow reactor, thermocouples monitored the surface temperatures, and surface characterization identified the catalyst oxidation state (PdO) and surface …

Microscale Transverse Compression Modeling: A Comparative Study Of The Analytical Mac/Gmc Methods To Experimental Results, Emily Zeitunian
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Composite materials require a multi-scale approach to fully understand its behavior. At the micro level, material behavior analysis is conducted most often using numerical or analytical approaches. These models, however, require validation from experimental data to ensure material predictions are accurate. This study compares a semi-analytical micromechanical analysis tool, MAC/GMC, to experimental results of in-situ microscale transverse compression testing conducted at AFRL facilities. Effective properties, stress-strain curves, stress and strain fields, and damage predictions are compared with experimental outputs. Both generalized method of cells (GMC) and high-fidelity generalized method of cells (HFGMC) theories implemented within MAC/GMC show results that agree …
Juggling A Devil-Stick: Hybrid Orbit Stabilization Using The Impulse Controlled Poincaré Map, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee
Juggling A Devil-Stick: Hybrid Orbit Stabilization Using The Impulse Controlled Poincaré Map, Nilay Kant, Ranjan Mukherjee
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The control design for juggling a devil-stick between two symmetric configurations is proposed. Impulsive forces are applied to the devil-stick at the two configurations; and impulse of the force and its point of application are modeled as the control inputs. The dynamics of the devil-stick is described by a single return Poincaré map, and it is shown that the control objective of juggling can be achieved by stabilizing a hybrid orbit. The impulse controlled Poincaré map (ICPM) approach, recently proposed for stabilization of continuous-time orbits of underactuated systems, is extended to achieve asymptotic stabilization of the hybrid orbit. The applicability …
Investigating Ground Interactions Of A Rotocraft Landing Vehicle On Titan, Adam Rozman
Investigating Ground Interactions Of A Rotocraft Landing Vehicle On Titan, Adam Rozman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The exploration of celestial bodies has recently advanced from rovers to rotorcraft. This includes the recent flights of Mars Ingenuity and the upcoming Dragonfly mission to explore the terrain of Saturn’s moon Titan as part of NASA’s New Frontiers Program. Flight-based landers can travel quickly to sites kilometers apart and land in complex terrain. Although cruise conditions for these rotorcrafts are well understood, studies are necessary to understand take-off and landing. In ground effect conditions, a rotor wake impinges and reflects off the ground, creating changes in aerodynamics such as increased lift. Additionally, operating over loose surfaces, the rotors can …

A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper
A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The main objective of the present work is to demonstrate a method for prediction of aerothermal environments in the engineering design of hypersonic vehicles as an alternative to the current heritage method. Flat plate and stagnation point boundary layer theory require multiple assumptions to establish the current engineering paradigm. Chief among these assumptions is the similarity between mass and heat transfer. Origins of these assumptions are demonstrated and their relationship to conservative engineering design is analyzed, as well as conditions where they possibly break down. An alternative approach for assessing aerothermal environments from the fluid domain is presented, which permits …
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation presents new results on multi-agent formation control and applies the new control algorithms to quadrotor unmanned air vehicles. First, this dissertation presents a formation control algorithm for double-integrator agents, where the formation is time varying and the agents’ controls satisfy a priori bounds (e.g., the controls accommodate actuator saturation). The main analytic results provide sufficient conditions such that all agents converge to the desired time-varying relative positions with one another and the leader, and have a priori bounded controls (if applicable). We also present results from rotorcraft experiments that demonstrate the algorithm with time-varying formations and bounded controls. …

Particularly, lack of knowledge and understanding in continuous inkjets (CIJ) and drop-on-demand (DOD) technologies is identified as significant. Motivated by these needs, this dissertation is dedicated to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and scaling studies to improve existing inkjet technologies and develop new designs of efficient coating with single and/or multiple piezoelectric sensors to produce on-demand droplets. This dissertation study aims at developing a new DOD type coating technology, …
In-Situ Characterization Of Burr Formation In Finish Machining Of Inconel 718, Hamzah M. Zannoun
In-Situ Characterization Of Burr Formation In Finish Machining Of Inconel 718, Hamzah M. Zannoun
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
One of the undesirable byproducts that occur during the machining process is the development of burrs, which are defined as rough excess material that forms around the geometric discontinuities of a part. Burrs are especially problematic because they have negative impacts across the triple bottom line: economic, environmental, societal. For one, they are expensive to remove because the deburring process is entirely manual and requires skill. Further, burr material is typically discarded which is adding to the already mounting waste generated from machining such as in coolant and chip disposal. Lastly, there are many societal implications, such as operator injury …
Formation Control With Collision Avoidance For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Air Vehicles With Speed Constraints, Christopher Heintz
Formation Control With Collision Avoidance For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Air Vehicles With Speed Constraints, Christopher Heintz
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Advances in the miniaturization of powerful electronic components and motors, the democratization of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), and improvements in the performance, safety, and cost in lithium batteries has led to the proliferation of small and relatively inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Many of these UAVs are of the multi-rotor design, however, fixed-wing designs are often more efficient than rotary-wing aircraft, leading to a reduction in the power required for a UAV of a given mass to stay airborne. Autonomous cooperation between multiple UAVs would enable them to complete objectives that would be difficult or impossible for a single …

Guiding A Human Follower With Interaction Forces: Implications On Physical Human-Robot Interaction, George L. Holmes, Keyri Moreno Bonnett, Amy Costa, Devin Michael Burns, Yun Seong Song
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work challenges the common assumption in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) that the movement intention of a human user can be simply modeled with dynamic equations relating forces to movements, regardless of the user. Studies in physical human-human interaction (pHHI) suggest that interaction forces carry sophisticated information that reveals motor skills and roles in the partnership and even promotes adaptation and motor learning. In this view, simple force-displacement equations often used in pHRI studies may not be sufficient. To test this, this work measured and analyzed the interaction forces (F) between two humans as the leader guided the blindfolded follower …

Satellite Drag Coefficient Modeling For Thermosphere Science And Mission Operations, Piyush M. Mehta, Smriti N. Paul, Nicholas H. Crisp, Philip L. Sheridan, Christian Siemes, Günther March, Sean Bruinsma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Satellite drag modeling remains the largest source of uncertainty affecting space operations in low Earth orbit. The uncertainty stems from inaccurate models for mass density and drag coefficient. Drag coefficient modeling also impacts scientific knowledge on the physics and dynamics of the upper atmosphere through the estimation of high-fidelity mass density from measurements of acceleration on-board satellites. Efforts over the last decade have pushed drag coefficient modeling in the right direction, however, have resulted in multiple methods and tools. We provide a comprehensive review of the drag coefficient modeling methods and tools. Current scale differences between thermospheric data sets mostly …

Effects Of Wheel Rotation On Long-Period Wake Dynamics Of The Drivaer Fastback Model, Matthew Aultman, Rodrigo Auza-Gutierrez, Kevin Disotell, Lian Duan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations were performed to capture the long-period dynamics within the wake of a realistic DrivAer fastback model with stationary and rotating wheels. The simulations showed that the wake developed as a low-pressure torus regardless of whether the wheels were rotating. This torus shrank in size on the base in the case of rotating wheels, leading to a reduction in the low-pressure footprint on the base, and consequently a 7% decrease in the total vehicle drag in comparison to the stationary wheels case. Furthermore, the lateral vortex shedding experienced a long-period switching associated with the bi-stability in …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
While many technologies such as electrically assisted turbocharging, exhaust energy recovery and mild hybridization have already proven to significantly increase heavy-duty engine efficiency, the key challenge to their widespread adoption has been their cost effectiveness and packaging. This research specifically addresses these challenges through evaluation and development of a novel technology concept termed as the Integrated Turbogeneration, Electrification and Supercharging (ITES) system. The concept integrates a secondary compressor, a turbocompound/expander turbine and an electric motor through a planetary gearset into the engine cranktrain. The approach enables a reduced system cost and space-claim, while maximizing the efficiency benefits of independent technologies. …

Modularized designs have been widely used in today's consumer electronic devices and flexible RF springs are used for electrical connections between the modules. In the meantime, aluminum alloy material becomes a common chassis option. It is well known that the oxidized chassis surface introduces a certain level of nonlinearity when contacted by the springs, as known as passive intermodulation (PIM). PIM is one of the well-known root causes of the RF desensitization (desense). This paper is focused on investigating the relationship between PIM and contact conditions of the springs, especially contact area. The PIM level behavior is explained mathematically by …

Fuel-Rich Hetero-/Homogeneous Combustion Of C3h8/O2/N2 Mixtures Over Rhodium, John Mantzaras, Ran Sui, Rolf Bombach
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The catalytic (heterogeneous) and gas-phase (homogeneous) combustion of C3H8/O2/N2 mixtures over rhodium was investigated experimentally and numerically at 5 bar and at fuel-rich equivalence ratios π = 2.0-3.5 relevant to propane Catalytic Partial Oxidation (CPO). In situ spatially-resolved Raman measurements of major gas-phase species concentrations and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) of formaldehyde were applied in an optically accessible channel-flow reactor to monitor the catalytic and gas-phase processes, respectively, while accompanying 2D simulations were carried out with detailed hetero-/homogeneous chemical reaction mechanisms. Due to the high gas-phase reactivity of propane, homogeneous chemistry could not be ignored over most of the …

Regulation Of Dendrite-Free Li Plating Via Lithiophilic Sites On Lithium-Alloy Surface, Yufang He, Mengyun Zhang, Aiping Wang, Bo Zhang, Hiep Pham, Qiao Hu, Li Sheng, Hong Xu, Li Wang, Jonghyun Park, Xiangming He
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Lithium (Li) deposition behavior plays an important role in dendrite formation and the subsequent performance of lithium metal batteries. This work reveals the impact of the lithiophilic sites of lithium-alloy on the Li plating process via the first-principles calculations. We find that the Li deposition mechanisms on the Li metal and Li22Sn5 surface are different due to the lithiophilic sites. We first propose that Li plating on the Li metal surface goes through the "adsorption-reduction-desorption-heterogeneous nucleation-cluster drop "process, while it undergoes the "adsorption-reduction-growth "process on the Li22Sn5 surface. The lower adsorption energy contributes to the easy adsorption of Li on …
