Design And Optimization Of Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conductive Material For Use In Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Utilizing Carbon Nanotubes, Shiuan Duo Chiang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Triple phase boundary (TPB) is considered to be an important limiting factor of the fuel cell performance. Triple phase boundary is a geometrical line where the ionic, electronic and gaseous fuel phase of the fuel cell comes in contact. Electrochemical reactions of the fuel cell occur at the TPB sites. The TPB length greatly impacts the efficiency of the fuel cells. Carbon nanotubes have recently been shown to enhance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of the fuel cell and transfer electrons with its conductive properties. CNT also provides porosity in the electrode and could facilitate mass transport. CNT allows for oxygen …

With an increase in the need for energy efficient data centers, a lot of research is being done to increase the use of Air Side Economizers (ASEs), Direct Evaporative Cooling (DEC), Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC) and multistage I/DEC cooling. The cooling strategies used to control these systems is based on typical meteorological year (TMY) weather data and thermodynamic principles. But the main drawback of these control strategies is that they do not account for the nonlinearities developed by the conditions inside the data center. So, the primary objective of this study is to use Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for predicting …

On The Development Of A Human Thumb Tracking Device For Telemanipulation, Abdul Hafiz Abdul Rahaman
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The human thumb is the first digit of the hand and influences the grasping capability of the human hand. Based on literature, most sensor gloves available capture the motion of the fingers, however, they lack the ability to capture the motion of the thumb. This research focuses on developing a methodology and associated hardware to capture the complex joint motion of the thumb and map it to an in-house developed multi-degree of freedom robotic thumb. A sensor device was developed to measure four joint angles of the human thumb, namely three flexion/extension (flex/ext) joint angles of carpometacarpal (CMC), metacarpophalangeal (MCP), …

Research Of A Non-Linearity Control Algorithm For Uav Target Tracking Based On Fuzzy Logic Systems, Chaoying Pei, Jingjuan Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Qian Zhang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Target tracking is one of the most widely used applications of UAVs and visual based tracking is the main method for non-cooperative tracking. In non-cooperative tracking missions, the UAV circles around the target and the gimbal rotates to keep the optic axis of the onboard camera pointing to the target. Compared with the biaxial gimbal, the single-axis gimbal system consists of only one torque motor, forming a great lightweight sensor suite, which also increases the requirement of the control accuracy. In the process of tracking moving target using a UAV with single-axis gimbal, there are still several challenges: (1) The …

Improvement to an existing design is an ongoing and never-ending process in every field. The improvement can be in a myriad of areas like an increase in strength, reduction in weight, stiffness to a loading condition and so on. The way it is achieved can range from changing the properties of the material used by incorporating various manufacturing processes or by using an alternative material which can sustain the same loading conditions or for that matter, work better than the existing material. Composite materials like Carbon Fiber, Glass Fiber or Kevlar Fiber reinforced plastics, to name few, are being used …

Stochastic Finite Element Thermal Analysis Of A Ball Grid Array Package, Rahul Upreti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
This study provides an insight into the factors which have a major impact on the probability of failure of a Ball Grid Array package. A stochastic finite element analysis was done on the package using First-order reliability method (FORM). The effects of uncertainty in material thermal conductivities, heat source, heat transfer coefficient and ambient temperature were studied. The average temperature at the die-junction interface was selected as failure criterion because the excess temperature at the junction is often a cause of failure. The performance of Finite Difference Method(FDM) and Semi-Analytic Complex Variable Method(SACVM) in computing sensitivities are compared. Results show …

The energy used by Information Technology Equipment (ITE) and the supporting data center equipment keeps rising as data center expansion continues worldwide. To contain the rising operation costs, data center administrators are resorting to cost cutting measures by not adhering to the ambient data center environment standards. In many cases, free cooling techniques are adopted to partially or completely relieve the usage of refrigeration units, which adds to huge cost savings but also allows for the increased risk of particulate and gaseous contaminations. The ASHRAE TC9.9 subcommittee, on Mission Critical Facilities, Data Centers, Technology Spaces, and Electronic Equipment, has provided …

The data center energy efficiency largely depends on the thermal management of servers. Currently, air cooling is the most widely used thermal management technique …
A New Adaptive Multiscale Approach For The Dynamic Modeling And Simulation Of Biomolecular Systems, Ashley Chase Guy
A New Adaptive Multiscale Approach For The Dynamic Modeling And Simulation Of Biomolecular Systems, Ashley Chase Guy
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation presents three developments in the simulation of sub-micron dynamical systems. First, a new thermostat formulation is shown to strictly enforce the constant temperature constraint necessary in many thermodynamic ensembles. This formulation also allows the system to quickly evolve to a low-potential state. Next, this new thermostat formulation is leveraged to extend a continuum-regime multiscale formulation to the atomistic regime allowing for equivalent time histories to be generated in significantly less computation time. Finally, an adaptive multiscale formulation allows for potential forces with time varying magnitudes to contribute to the overall dynamics similarly resulting in equivalent time histories in …

Acclimation is the process in which an IT equipment adjusts to a change in its environment such as a change in temperature and humidity, allowing it to maintain performance across a range of environmental conditions. In commissioning of a new cold shipped IT equipment in data centers, environmental acclimation is an important step. Proper acclimation also minimizes the risk of powering on a machine that may still be wet due to moisture condensation. An experimental study is carried out to find how the acclimation occurs and the factors influencing it. These experiments are designed with various temperature ranges and using …

Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation Of Metal Additive Manufacturing., Venkata Karthik Nadimpalli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) is increasingly being used to make functional components. One of the barriers for AM components to become mainstream is the difficulty to certify them. AM components can have widely different properties based on process parameters. Improving an AM processes requires an understanding of process-structure-property correlations, which can be gathered in-situ and post-process through nondestructive and destructive methods. In this study, two metal AM processes were studied, the first is Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM) and the second is Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF). The typical problems with UAM components are inter-layer and inter-track defects. To improve the …
Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin
Active Permanent Magnet Attitude Control For Cubesats Using Mu-Metal Shielding, Maxwell Martin
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cube-Satellites (CubeSats) are nanosatellites composed of cube shaped units, each nominally 10cm to a side and around 1kg in mass. Due to their inherent size and weight limitations, it is often impractical to use conventional attitude, or rotational, control methods such as thrusters on these small satellites. Several methods, including magnetorquer rods and small reaction wheels, are often used instead of traditional methods to work around the size and weight limitations. As a new alternative to these methods, a permanent magnet mounted on a rotatable shaft could be used to achieve attitude control. In much the same way that a …
An Underwater Vehicle Navigation System Using Acoustic And Inertial Sensors, Khalid M. Alzahrani
An Underwater Vehicle Navigation System Using Acoustic And Inertial Sensors, Khalid M. Alzahrani
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) have become an essential tool for different underwater tasks. Compared with other unmanned systems, the navigation and localization for UUVs are particularly challenging due to the unavailability of Global Positioning System (GPS) signals underwater and the complexity of the unstable environment. Alternative methods such as acoustic positioning systems, Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), and the geophysical navigation approach are used for UUV navigation. Acoustic positioning systems utilize the characteristics of acoustic signals that have a lower absorption rate and a more extended propagation distance than electromagnetic signals underwater. The significant disadvantage of the INS is the “drift,” …
Numerical Simulation Of A High Strain Rate Biaxial Compression Apparatus, Michael Lagieski
Numerical Simulation Of A High Strain Rate Biaxial Compression Apparatus, Michael Lagieski
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Few experimental methods today are capable of exploring the strength of materials at high strain rates (105 s-1). Those that are capable, such as the Split Hopkinson Bar, Taylor Anvil and Plate Impact suffer from instability and are generally limited to one dimensional wave propagation. Of particular interest is material response under biaxial compression, similar to that seen in inertial confinement fusion. Laser fusion fuel pellets typically undergo large strain rates as well as plastic deformation and non-linear behavior. This work briefly outlines an experimental procedure designed to replicate these large strain rates under biaxial compression using …

The Water Entry Of Multi-Droplet Streams And Jets, Nathan B. Spiers, Zhao Pan, Jesse Belden, Tadd T. Truscott
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Water entry has been studied for over a century, but few studies have focused on multiple droplets impacting on a liquid bath sequentially. We connect multi-droplet streams, jets and solid objects with physical-based scaling arguments that emphasize the intrinsically similar cavities. In particular, the cavities created by the initial impact of both droplet streams and jets on an initially quiescent liquid pool exhibit the same types of cavity seal as hydrophobic spheres at low Bond number, some of which were previously unseen for jets and droplet streams. Low-frequency droplet streams exhibit an additional three new cavity seal types unseen for …

Microstructural analysis and micro-hardness measurements were performed on different planes of 316L stainless steel fabricated by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique. A fine cellular network was observed within the steel microstructure, where morphology of most cells changed from columnar on XZ-plane (vertical section) to equiaxed on XY-plane (horizontal section). Correspondingly, morphology of most grains was found to alter from columnar for the XZ-plane to equiaxed in the case of the XY-plane. Moreover, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a fully austenitic structure for both the planes. The average micro-hardness value for the XZ-plane and XY-plane was insignificantly (≈ 3%) different, …

Determination Of Chemical Notch, KChem On Aluminum And Steel When Subjected Under Slow Strain Rate Test In Corrosive Environment, Joshua Teo Lee Kuok
Masters Theses
When designing for any mechanical components or system, the question would arise as to how the material would react to the loads subjected on it? Would the component survive its service load? How would it react to environmental corrosion? To answer these questions, the technique used in this thesis paper is the Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT) method. Aluminum and steel were chosen as the material to be tested in this paper. Al 7075-T651, and Al 6061-T651 was chosen due to its wide range of application, high strength to weight ratio and ease of machinability. It is highly used in …

Development Of A Self-Orienting Cubesat Solar Array, Eric Mcgill
Honors Theses
The sponsor of this conceptual design project was the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at WrightPatterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. AFIT was striving to give CubeSats more capability to conduct research, reconnaissance, and other functions. One of the major barriers for AFIT to overcome to give CubeSats more capability was the ability of the CubeSat to generate usable power while in orbit. All of AFIT’s CubeSats generated the power needed while in orbit with solar panels that are rigidly mounted to the outside of the craft. AFIT believes that a new design for the solar array used …
Influence Of Reverse Shoulder Implant Positioning On Patient-Specific Muscle Forces: A Simulation Study, Kayla Marie Pariser
Influence Of Reverse Shoulder Implant Positioning On Patient-Specific Muscle Forces: A Simulation Study, Kayla Marie Pariser
Honors Theses
A reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is a common treatment used to stabilize the shoulder and improve range of motion in patients with torn rotator cuff muscles. Shoulder stability relies on the shoulder muscles. With rotator cuff tears, the RTSA enables the deltoid muscle to become the primary stabilizer of the shoulder joint. To improve stability, RTSAs increase the deltoid muscle moment arm and decrease the required torque about the shoulder joint for movement. Currently, there is not standardized, objective method for a surgeon to position an implant on a specific patient. This study is part of a larger, ongoing …

A Cost Effective Design For A Propeller Thrust/Torque Balance, Nicholas Barrett Sadowski
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Wind tunnel balances are used with aircraft models, propellers, and components to measure applied forces and moments. The design and manufacture of a balance is often for a specific test, test article and conditions. This paper discusses the theory, design, calibration, and testing of a new small propeller balance for use in a low-speed wind tunnel. The new balance is named the ODU15X15.
Theory discussed herein covers how the two measurement components, thrust and torque, affect the balance design. These loads generate strains which are in turn read by strain gages arranged in Wheatstone bridges. The design follows well known …

Manufacturing Process Simulation – On Its Way To Industrial Application, Dennis Otten, Tobias A. Weber, Jan-Christoph Arent
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Manufacturing process simulation (MPS) has become more and more important for aviation and the automobile industry. A highly competitive market requires the use of high performance metals and composite materials in combination with reduced manufacturing cost and time as well as a minimization of the time to market for a new product. However, the use of such materials is expensive and requires sophisticated manufacturing processes. An experience based process and tooling design followed by a lengthy trial-and-error optimization is just not contemporary anymore. Instead, a tooling design process aided by simulation is used more often. This paper provides an overview …

The HHSTT located at Holloman Air Force Base conducts hypersonic testing in a unique way. Rather than perform cost prohibitive flight testing or hypersonic wind tunnel testing, a rocket-powered sled propels test articles down a track. This test setup has been used to test at speeds up to 2885 m/s (~Mach 8.6). The sled is kept on the rails by utilizing slippers, fabricated to wrap around the rail [1]. This slipper design keeps the sled from separating from the rail during a test due to the airflow producing lift, in a designed effort to minimize the wear that occurs during …
