Generative Adversarial Networks For Extrapolation Of Corrosion In Automobile Images, Andre Von Zuben
Generative Adversarial Networks For Extrapolation Of Corrosion In Automobile Images, Andre Von Zuben
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Deep learning has shown success in several applications involving pattern recognition, expert systems, and scientific discovery. However, existing methods struggle with industrial applications, which are often challenged by non-ideal datasets. In many cases, the datasets are small, poorly labeled, noisy, or have unbalanced class distribution or any combination of such problems. In this Master's research, we propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) strategy that is able to circumvent limitations imposed by tiny datasets. As a case study, we use the extrapolation of corrosion in automobiles and feed our deep learning framework with only a few dozen images instead of the …
Modeling Human Control Behavior In Command-Following Tasks, Sajad Koushkbaghi
Modeling Human Control Behavior In Command-Following Tasks, Sajad Koushkbaghi
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Humans interact with a variety of complex dynamic systems on a daily basis. However, they are often the lesser understood component of human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems. In this dissertation, we present the results of two HITL experiments to investigate the control strategies that humans use when performing command-following tasks. The first experiment is designed to investigate the control strategies that humans use to interact with nonlinear dynamic systems. Two groups of human subjects interact with a dynamic system and perform a command-following task. One group interacts with a linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamic system and the other group interacts with a Wiener …
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Formation Control With Bounded Controls And Collision Avoidance: Theory And Application To Quadrotor Unmanned Air Vehicles, Zachary S. Lippay
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This dissertation presents new results on multi-agent formation control and applies the new control algorithms to quadrotor unmanned air vehicles. First, this dissertation presents a formation control algorithm for double-integrator agents, where the formation is time varying and the agents’ controls satisfy a priori bounds (e.g., the controls accommodate actuator saturation). The main analytic results provide sufficient conditions such that all agents converge to the desired time-varying relative positions with one another and the leader, and have a priori bounded controls (if applicable). We also present results from rotorcraft experiments that demonstrate the algorithm with time-varying formations and bounded controls. …

The Effects Of Reference-Command Preview On The Strategies That Humans Use In Command-Following Tasks, Amelia J. S. Sheffler
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
This thesis presents results from an experiment in which 22 human subjects each interact with a dynamic system 40 times over a one-week period. For each interaction, a subject performs a command-following task, where the reference command is the same for all 22 subjects but different on each trial. The subjects are divided into 2 groups of 11 subjects. One group performs the command-following task without reference-command preview. The other group is provided with 1-s preview of the reference command. The experimental results are used to examine the effects of reference-command preview. For the group with 1-s reference-command preview, the …
Small-Satellite Attitude Control Using Sinusoidal Actuator Motion: Experiments On The International Space Station, K. Ryan Lush
Small-Satellite Attitude Control Using Sinusoidal Actuator Motion: Experiments On The International Space Station, K. Ryan Lush
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
In this work, we design, build, and test two 1.25U CubeSats. These small satellites were deployed on the International Space Station to perform attitude control experiments in microgravity. These CubeSats use an oscillating-mass actuation system for attitude control as opposed to traditional flywheels. Each CubeSat uses 3 pairs of servomotors to oscillate masses about 3 orthogonal axes. The servomotors have strict rotational stroke limits. Thus, they cannot spin continually. To oscillate each pair of masses, the angle of each servomotor is commanded using signals that are continuous and piecewise sinusoidal with amplitudes that do not violate the servomotor stroke constraints. …

Experimental Comparison Of Two Sampled-Data Adaptive Control Algorithms For Rejecting Sinusoidal Disturbances, William Grayson Woods
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
We review two adaptive control algorithms that address the problem of rejecting sinusoids with known frequencies that act on an unknown asymptotically stable linear time-invariant system. We present modifications to the algorithms that address the problems of sensor noise and actuator saturation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms and compare the performance of the algorithms via numerical simulation and experimental testing.
Formation Control With Collision Avoidance For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Air Vehicles With Speed Constraints, Christopher Heintz
Formation Control With Collision Avoidance For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Air Vehicles With Speed Constraints, Christopher Heintz
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Advances in the miniaturization of powerful electronic components and motors, the democratization of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), and improvements in the performance, safety, and cost in lithium batteries has led to the proliferation of small and relatively inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Many of these UAVs are of the multi-rotor design, however, fixed-wing designs are often more efficient than rotary-wing aircraft, leading to a reduction in the power required for a UAV of a given mass to stay airborne. Autonomous cooperation between multiple UAVs would enable them to complete objectives that would be difficult or impossible for a single …

Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela
Wayne State University Dissertations
Sound source localization is typically conducted in open space so that the line of sight is not blocked among individual sensors. This research presents a new technology that enables one to see acoustically through a solid Plexiglass enclosure to locate a sound source stationed inside at some arbitrarily selected locations. By using SODAR technology, non-invasive laser-assisted microphones, analog, and digital signal processing (band-pass filtering, fast Fourier transform algorithm, cross-correlations, and triangulations) satisfactory sound source localization results were obtained. In this project, the enclosure walls were flat; only the azimuth angle of a sound source could be determined. To obtain the …

Development And Validation Of A Force Measuring Device For A Laboratory Wave Tank, Jacob K. Colling
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The ability to predict the hydrodynamic force exerted on floating bodies plays a critical role in creating more effective control strategies for wave energy converters (WECs). Developing a test apparatus capable of directly measuring the forces exerted on a floating body subjected to a wavefield provides the means to validate theoretical prediction methods with experimental results and to develop data-based prediction methods for hydrodynamic forces. This report will discuss the development and validation of a device that measures the total vertical force exerted on a test artifact. The device requirements and design are discussed to examine the factors taken into …
On-Ice Detection, Classification, Localization And Tracking Of Anthropogenic Acoustic Sources With Machine Learning, Steven J. Whitaker
On-Ice Detection, Classification, Localization And Tracking Of Anthropogenic Acoustic Sources With Machine Learning, Steven J. Whitaker
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Arctic acoustics have been of concern in recent years for the US navy. First-year ice is now the prevalent factor in ice coverage in the Arctic, which changes the previously understood acoustic properties. Due to the ice melting each year, anthropogenic sources in the Arctic region are more common: military exercises, shipping, and tourism. For the navy, it is of interest to detect, classify, localize, and track these sources to have situational awareness of these surroundings. Because the sources are on-water or on-ice, acoustic radiation propagates at a longer distance and so acoustics are the method by which the sources …
Characterization Of Hydraulic Flow Noise Induced By Spool Valves, Carter A. Paprocki
Characterization Of Hydraulic Flow Noise Induced By Spool Valves, Carter A. Paprocki
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The purpose of the hydraulic flow noise research was to investigate the relationship between operational valve parameters and flow noise generation. The primary consideration was correlating the flow noise generated by the valve with the distinct valve open positions. This data would allow future valve designs to account for features that cause increased flow noise and move those features away from high flow valve displacements. By implementing this, companies would be able to design quieter hydraulic systems that will not expose operators to the current levels of sound found on machines. The experiments were conducted using two valves with different …
Precise Landing Of Vtol Uavs Using A Tether, Jeremy W. Rathjen
Precise Landing Of Vtol Uavs Using A Tether, Jeremy W. Rathjen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, are often considered the solution to complex robotics problems. The significant freedom to explore an environment is a major reason why UAVs are a popular choice for automated solutions. UAVs, however, have a very limited flight time due to the low capacity and weight ratio of current batteries. One way to extend the vehicles' flight time is to use a tether to provide power from external batteries, generators on the ground, or another vehicle. Attaching a tether to a vehicle may constrain its navigation but it may also create some opportunities for …
Torque Vectoring To Maximize Straight-Line Efficiency In An All-Electric Vehicle With Independent Rear Motor Control, William Blake Brown
Torque Vectoring To Maximize Straight-Line Efficiency In An All-Electric Vehicle With Independent Rear Motor Control, William Blake Brown
Theses and Dissertations
BEVs are a critical pathway towards achieving energy independence and meeting greenhouse and pollutant gas reduction goals in the current and future transportation sector [1]. Automotive manufacturers are increasingly investing in the refinement of electric vehicles as they are becoming an increasingly popular response to the global need for reduced transportation emissions. Therefore, there is a desire to extract the most fuel economy from a vehicle as possible. Some areas that manufacturers spend much effort on include minimizing the vehicle’s mass, body drag coefficient, and drag within the powertrain. When these values are defined or unchangeable, interest is driven to …
The Effect Of Noise-Reducing Acoustic Panels On The Noise Levels And Overall Safety Of Infant Sleep Machines, Pranav Poola
The Effect Of Noise-Reducing Acoustic Panels On The Noise Levels And Overall Safety Of Infant Sleep Machines, Pranav Poola
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Infant sleep machines (ISMs) are devices used to help infants fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer amounts of time, yet they can often be too loud for infantile ears, which could potentially be dangerous. This research aimed to minimize the risks of infant sleep machines without reducing the effectiveness of the infant sleep machines themselves through the use of acoustic panels. Based on previous studies, it was hypothesized that the acoustic panels would reduce the noise levels of the ISM to less than recommended limits of 50 dB-A. A specific corner of a designated room was prepared with …
Nonlinear Model Development And Validation For Ball And Plate Control System, Zachary Richter
Nonlinear Model Development And Validation For Ball And Plate Control System, Zachary Richter
Master's Theses
Ball and plate balancing control systems are commonly studied due to the complex dynamics associated with the instability of the system in open-loop. For simplicity, mathematical models describing the ball and plate dynamics are often linearized and the effects of complex motion are assumed to be negligible. These assumptions are rarely backed with evidence or explanations validating the simplified form of the dynamical equations of motion. This thesis focuses on developing a nonlinear model that more accurately defines the dynamics of the system, in order to quantify the error of linear and nonlinear models when compared to a Simscape physical …
Development And Applications Of Adjoint-Based Aerodynamic And Aeroacoustic Multidisciplinary Optimization For Rotorcraft, Ramiz Omur Icke
Development And Applications Of Adjoint-Based Aerodynamic And Aeroacoustic Multidisciplinary Optimization For Rotorcraft, Ramiz Omur Icke
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is one of the most popular proposed solutions for alleviating traffic problems in populated areas. In this context, the proposed types of vehicles mainly consist of rotors and propellers powered by electric motors. However, those rotary-wing components can contribute excessively to noise generation. Therefore, a significant noise concern emerges due to urban air vehicles in or around residential areas. Reducing noise emitted by air vehicles is critically important to improve public acceptance of such vehicles for operations in densely populated areas.
Two main objectives of the present dissertation are: (1) to expand the multidisciplinary optimization to …

Adjustable Height Pedestal Grinder Stand, Josef Zagorski, Zachary Wedel, Michael Sitar, Daniel Zevenbergen
Mechanical Engineering
Pedestal grinders are one of the most common machines found in machine shops today. The current industry standard for mounting a grinder is on a fixed single pillar, cast iron pedestal. A fixed pedestal allows for no vertical adjustment for shop users of different sizes and is a safety hazard. This report further defines this problem and proposes an iterative design process to meet the needs and wants of the customer. The adjustable-height pedestal grinder stand Senior Project team used this problem and design process to successfully complete the project within the allotted time. The first major deliverable and milestone …
Vibration Isolation For Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Seth Ewing, Ryan Mcmullen, Jason Behrens, Stephen Deherrera
Vibration Isolation For Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Seth Ewing, Ryan Mcmullen, Jason Behrens, Stephen Deherrera
Mechanical Engineering
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) works by scanning a fine metal wire over a conductive sample in order to image samples on the atomic level. The microscope uses a feedback loop with a PID controller to maintain a constant tunneling current between the sample and the tip. In order to obtain clear imaging at the atomic level, the microscope and the sample need to be isolated from external vibrations in a vacuum chamber. The scope for this project is to build and test a single-stage vibration isolation system that effectively attenuates the amplitude of external vibrations acting on the microscope. This …
