Designing Self-Healable Aromatic Copolymers And Olefinic Composites, Samruddhi Yashwant Gaikwad Aug 2025

Designing Self-Healable Aromatic Copolymers And Olefinic Composites, Samruddhi Yashwant Gaikwad

All Dissertations

Self-healing polymers capable of recovering from mechanical damage are promising materials for advanced applications, especially those involving mechanical and/or physical fatigue. In these studies, we have developed techniques to achieve autonomous self-healing in commodity Styrene/n-butyl acrylate copolymers. The mechanism of self-healing in the designed polymers involves inter-and/or intrachain non-covalent interactions between π-cloud and polar linkages of acrylic nBA in random/preferentially alternating copolymers. A combination of spectroscopic tools, thermo-mechanical analysis, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations has been used to elucidate the mechanism of self-healing. These studies further show the incorporation of dipolar C-F groups to understand the effect of having fluorinated …

Synthesis And Radical Polymerization Of N,N-Diallyl Phthalimide, Oytura S. Maksumova, Feruza A. Pulatova, Dilnozakhon I. Tursunova, Feruza A. Makhmudova

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

The aim of this work is the synthesis of iodine N,N-diallylphthalimide and the study of its radical polymerization. In this regard, the synthesis of iodine N,N-diallylphthalimide was carried out in two stages: at the first stage, phthalic anhydride reacts with allylamine and forms allyl phthalimide, at the second stage, allyl phthalimide reacts with allyl iodide to form iodine N, N-diallyl phthalimide. Radical polymerization of the synthesized quaternary salt of N, N-diallyl phthalimide was studied in the presence of the initiator dinitrile azobisisobutyric acid at relatively low temperatures. Kinetic features of the polymerization reaction of iodine N, N-diallyl phthalimide were considered. …

Simplified Synthesis Of Conjugated Polymers Enabled Via 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-B]Pyrrole, Kenneth-John Jack Bell Apr 2022

Simplified Synthesis Of Conjugated Polymers Enabled Via 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-B]Pyrrole, Kenneth-John Jack Bell

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Conjugated polymers have attracted significant attention as the active layer material in organic electronics, such as organic photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes, partly due to the ability to influence a broad range of properties through structural design motifs. However, high performance conjugated polymers suffer from numerous synthetic steps, generation of toxic waste, and harsh reaction conditions all of which impart additional costs that inhibit their widespread utilization. Therefore, an emphasis on reducing synthetic complexity and utilizing abundant, commercially available starting materials is needed for organic electronics to reach their full potential. Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole (H2DPP) chromophores offer a simple one-pot synthesis …

A Model-Based Framework For The Smart Manufacturing Of Polymers, Santiago D. Salas Ortiz May 2019

A Model-Based Framework For The Smart Manufacturing Of Polymers, Santiago D. Salas Ortiz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is hard to point a daily activity in which polymeric materials or plastics are not involved. The synthesis of polymers occurs by reacting small molecules together to form, under certain conditions, long molecules. In polymer synthesis, it is mandatory to assure uniformity between batches, high-quality of end-products, efficiency, minimum environmental impact, and safety. It remains as a major challenge the establishment of operational conditions capable of achieving all objectives together. In this dissertation, different model-centric strategies are combined, assessed, and tested for two polymerization systems.

The first system is the synthesis of polyacrylamide in aqueous solution using potassium persulfate …

Optimizing Solvent Blends For A Quinary System, Thomas L. Hoy Jan 2016

Optimizing Solvent Blends For A Quinary System, Thomas L. Hoy

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Department of Polymer Engineering had received a grant from the Keck foundation to produce a process in which hundreds of copolymers can be formulated, synthesized, analyzed and then extrapolated to produce the optimal polymer for the desired material property. This process involves synthesizing approximately fifty polymers in a custom apparatus, none of which necessarily have the same monomer components. This leads to issue of which solvent or blend of solvents to use that would sufficiently dissolve both monomers and the resulting copolymer. If the monomers are not completely dissolved, a homogenous reaction will be impossible and if the copolymer …

Preparation Of Styrene Acrylic Copolymer Toner Resin By Solution Polymerization., Neo Su Siang

Student Works (2010-2019)

This project has investigated solution polymerization to produce toner resins. There are three stages: (i) synthesis of low molecular weight styrene acrylic copolymer; (ii) synthesis of high molecular weight styrene acrylic copolymer; (iii) mixing high and low molecular weight copolymers. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was used to study molecular weight distributions, Melt Flow Index (MFI) Instrument to study the flowability of resin, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to study the thermal properties of resin, and acid number to quantitate the amount of acidic group in the resin. A comparison of properties between the experimental samples, patent’s claims, and commercial resins had …

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Polymerizable ionic liquid surfactants were synthesized and polymerized, yielding engineered advanced polymers that can be tailored for diverse applications. First, 1-(2-acryloyloxyundecyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (IL-BF4) was synthesized and was copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) via microemulsion polymerization. The resulting polymer gels can be transformed into porous materials by anion exchange, and the porosity of the material can be tuned through the solvent shifting. Second, an ionic liquid composed of a 1-(2-acryloyloxyundecyl)-3- methylimidazolium (IL) cation and 2-acryloamido-2-methyl-propylsulfonate (AMPS) anion was synthesized and polymerized by UV irradiation, and introductory data are illustrated for humidity sensitive preparations suitable for chemFETs, for proton conducting …

Determinations Of Molecular Weight And Molecular Weight Distribution Of High Polymers By The Rheological Properties, Joan Y. Z. Huang Jul 1989

Determinations Of Molecular Weight And Molecular Weight Distribution Of High Polymers By The Rheological Properties, Joan Y. Z. Huang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Several methods are reviewed by which the molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polymeric material were determined from the rheological properties. A poly (arylene ether) polymer with six different molecular weights was used in this investigation. Experimentally measured MW and MWD were conducted by GPC/LALLS (Gel Permeation Chromatography/Low Angle Laser Light Scattering), and the rheological properties of the melts were measured by a Rheometric System Four rheometer. It was found that qualitative information of the MW and MWD of these polymers could be derived from the viscoelastic properties, with the methods proposed by Zeichner and Pate1, and …

Removing Fluoride From Drinking Water By Organic Polymers, Eleni Davou Achilleos Jul 1985

Removing Fluoride From Drinking Water By Organic Polymers, Eleni Davou Achilleos

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fluoride is a substance that can provide beneficial or detrimental effects depending on the total amount ingested. Naturally occurring high fluoride concentrations exist in many drinking water supplies. The fluoride removal methods developed in the past have been found to be either impractical and/or not cost effective.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether organic polymers can effectively remove fluoride. The water used in this study contained naturally occurring fluoride concentrations between 4.5 to 5.5 mg/1 and it was collected from the City of Franklin, Virginia, water supply system. Laboratory jar test procedures, which simulated a conventional water …

Analysis Of Moisture Absorption And Diffusion In Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Resin-Matrix Composite Materials, Stephen Stern Tompkins Apr 1978

Analysis Of Moisture Absorption And Diffusion In Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Resin-Matrix Composite Materials, Stephen Stern Tompkins

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The diffusion of moisture through fiber reinforced polymeric-matrix composite materials has been studied analytically. The diffusion in the orthotropic, nonhomogeneous material was modeled, in detail, with a two-dimensional transient diffusion analysis. An effective diffusivity for the composite was determined in terms of the fiber volume fraction and the resin diffusivity. This effective diffusivity is in better agreement with recent data than those previously determined using less complex models.

The influence of both material and environmental parameters on the moisture content of the composite was determined analytically. Predicted moisture contents were compared over a wide range of values for emittance, solar …
