Fabrication And Characterization Of Lignin–Pva Hydrogels With Tunable Network Structures, Keturah Bethel
Fabrication And Characterization Of Lignin–Pva Hydrogels With Tunable Network Structures, Keturah Bethel
All Dissertations
The ability to directly tune the crosslinked network structure of hydrogels is crucial for their functional applications in various fields, such as water filtration, protein separation, and tissue engineering. By controlling the crosslink density of the hydrogel, one can directly alter the mesh size – i.e., the end-to-end distance between crosslink junctions – and, subsequently, directly alter the hydrogel performance. This work discusses the fabrication and characterization of soft composites containing the biopolymer, lignin, are discussed. Precisely, physically-crosslinked composite lignin–Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were fabricated via the freeze-thaw (F/T) pathway, whereby solutions containing specified amounts of PVA and lignin were …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Preparation Parameters On The Structural And Mechanical Properties Of Gelatin/Elastin/Sodium Hyaluronate Scaffolds Fabricated By The Combined Foaming And Freeze-Drying Techniques, Mansour Qamash, S. Misagh Imani, Meisam Omidi, Ciara Glancy, Lobat Tayebi
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of different preparation parameters, including agitation speed, agitation time, and chilling temperature, on the structural and mechanical properties of a novel gelatin/elastin/sodium hyaluronate tissue engineering scaffold, recently developed by our research group. Fabricated using a combination of foaming and freeze-drying techniques, the scaffolds were assessed to understand how these parameters influence their morphology, internal microstructure, porosity, mechanical properties, and degradation behavior. The fabrication process used in this study involved preparing a homogeneous aqueous solution containing 8% gelatin, 2% elastin, and 0.5% sodium hyaluronate (w/v), which was then subjected to mechanical agitation at speeds …
Structural Design And Application Of Polymeric Silicon Elastomers, Jacob Wyant
Structural Design And Application Of Polymeric Silicon Elastomers, Jacob Wyant
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this project was to determine how the polymeric structure and mechanical properties of this elastomer are affected by the ratio between the polydimethylsiloxane macromolecular chains and the crosslinkers. These were determined via tensile and compression testing. Then, spiropyran was added to observe how this fluorescence and crosslinking agent affected the elastomer. Also, the elastomer’s fluorescent and icephobic nature were tested. The elastomers with a higher ratio of crosslinker to macromolecular chain could withstand higher tensile and compressive strains but failed at lower stresses than their counterparts with lower concentrations of crosslinkers. The elastomers were also found to …
Molecular Modeling Of High-Performance Polymers, Sagar Umesh Patil
Molecular Modeling Of High-Performance Polymers, Sagar Umesh Patil
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
High-performance polymers are extensively used in the aerospace and aeronautics industries due to their low density, high specific strength, and high specific stiffness. These properties along with better infiltration with reinforcements [carbon nanotubes (CNTs), glass, etc.] capability make them an excellent candidate to fabricate Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) tailored for specific applications. The applications range from products used daily to deep space exploration. These materials are subjected to varying temperatures and pressures during fabrication and in service. Therefore, the evolution of their intrinsic properties needs to be studied and their ability to sustain extreme environmental conditions in outer space needs …
New Methods For Understanding And Controlling The Self-Assembly Of Reacting Systems Using Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics, Stephen Thomas
New Methods For Understanding And Controlling The Self-Assembly Of Reacting Systems Using Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics, Stephen Thomas
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This research aims at developing new computational methods to understand the molecular self-assembly of reacting systems whose complex structures depend on the thermodynamics of mixing, reaction kinetics, and diffusion kinetics. The specific reacting system examined in this study is epoxy, cured with linear chain thermoplastic tougheners whose complex microstructure is known from experiments to affect mechanical properties and to be sensitive to processing conditions. Mesoscale simulation techniques have helped to bridge the length and time scales needed to predict the microstructures of cured epoxies, but the prohibitive computational cost of simulating experimentally relevant system sizes has limited their impact. In …
Molecular Modeling Of Aerospace Polymer Matrices Including Carbon Nanotube-Enhanced Epoxy, Matthew Radue
Molecular Modeling Of Aerospace Polymer Matrices Including Carbon Nanotube-Enhanced Epoxy, Matthew Radue
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Carbon fiber (CF) composites are increasingly replacing metals used in major structural parts of aircraft, spacecraft, and automobiles. The current limitations of carbon fiber composites are addressed through computational material design by modeling the salient aerospace matrix materials. Molecular Dynamics (MD) models of epoxies with and without carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforcement and models of pure bismaleimides (BMIs) were developed to elucidate structure-property relationships for improved selection and tailoring of matrices.
The influence of monomer functionality on the mechanical properties of epoxies is studied using the Reax Force Field (ReaxFF). From deformation simulations, the Young’s modulus, yield point, and Poisson’s ratio …
Quantitative Analysis Of The Reaction Between Gliadin And Citric Acid Under Weak Acidic And Weak Alkaline Conditions, Wei Li
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Gliadin was reacted with citric acid under weak acidic and weak alkaline conditions in both wet and dry states and the reaction mechanism was studied. The low morphological stability in an aqueous environment and inferior mechanical properties have restricted the applications of plant proteins, although these materials possess a unique structure, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Carboxylic acids such as citric acid are inexpensive and nontoxic chemicals and are preferred for crosslinking proteins and cellulose to improve the desired properties of the materials.
In this study, gliadin was chosen as a model of plant proteins to react with citric acid. However, previous …
Crosslinked Conventional Size And Nanoparticle Size Acrylic Latexes And Their Blends: Investigation Of The Effects Of Crosslinking, Particle Size And Distribution, Glass Transition Temperature And Blending On Film Formation, Properties And Morphology, Ravi Ghanshyambhai Joshi
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Synthetic latexes have many product applications including functioning as a binder in paints and coatings. For many years, researchers in industry as well as in academe have been exploring various strategies to improve performance of acrylic latexes mainly to replace traditionally used solvent borne coatings due to increasing environmental concerns and strict governmental regulations. The main goal of the study is to investigate the effects of type (pre-coalescence or post-coalescence) and level of crosslinking, particle size (nano particle size ~ 20-25 nm vs. conventional particle size ~ 120-130 nm) and distribution, glass transition temperature (Tg), and blending on latex film …
