Effect Of Sorbitol Plasticizer On Bioplastics Properties Based On Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (Opefb) And Jackfruit Seed Starch, Nia Sasria, Vita Nur Afifah, Gusti Umindya Nur Tajalla
Makara Journal of Science
In bioplastics, natural materials that are easily decomposed are used to minimize plastic waste. In this research, the compositions used were cellulose from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB), jackfruit seed starch, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a filler with sorbitol as a plasticizer. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a sorbitol plasticizer on bioplastic properties. The study began by extracting jackfruit seed starch and OPEFB cellulose. Subsequently, bioplastics were prepared by varying sorbitol, namely 0 (S – 0), 0.5 mL (S – 0.5), 1 mL (S – 1), and 1.5 ml (S – 1.5), with CMC 20%. …

Chitosan (CS) and Aloe vera (AV) are functional and antibacterial materials compatible with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which confers medical and healthcare potential. This study prepared and then characterized the influence of CS/AV ratios on the tensile properties of CS/AV/PVA nanofibrous membranes for wound care dressing materials. The CS/AV/PVA membranes were fabricated using an electrospinning technique at varying AV/CS/PVA volume ratios: 0:0:100, 0:20:80, 5:15:80, 10:10:80, 15:5:80, and 20:0:80. All membranes were subjected to tensile testing as per the ASTM 882 standard, and the nanofiber’s morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Changes in the tensile strength related to the formation of …

Effect Of Temperature On Physicochemical Properties Of Plasticized Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose K100–Carbopol 934 Films Containing Propylene Glycol As Plasticizer, Braja Bihari Panda, Rudra Narayan Sahoo, Amit Kumar Nayak
Makara Journal of Science
This paper studies the effect of different temperatures on different important physicochemical characteristics of plasti-cized hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K100-Carbopol 934 films containing propylene glycol (as a plasticizer), such as the rheology, thickness, folding endurance, tensile strength, elongation, and in vitro swelling with diffusion ki-netics. Rheology of HPMC K100-Carbopol 934 blend dispersions containing propylene glycol (before film casting) demonstrates that the flow is shear thinning and pseudoplastic. In the study of in vitro swelling, the relaxation-controlled transport is the predominant process of solvent diffusion into these plasticized HPMC K100–Carbopol 934 blend films under study. The results suggest that the solvent transport …

Water pollution affects life sustainability; hence, several efforts have been exerted to overcome this problem. For ex-ample, nanofiber membrane technology is introduced to retain solutes while allowing only water molecules to pass through the system. Therefore, this study aimed to maximize the technology for water filtration using the electrospin-ning method by combining Styrofoam waste-based polymer with activated carbon from coconut shell waste (ACCS). The nanofiber diameter produced ranged from 590 nm to 610 nm with porous characteristics and without beads. The carbon content varied from 68.04% to 69.84%, according to the energy dispersive X-ray measurement, demonstrating the composite’s effectiveness. The …

The development of innovative food packaging technologies, particularly those capable of monitoring freshness, has become increasingly important in the food industry. This research explores the development of a pH-responsive freshness sensor using polyvinyl alcohol–red cabbage (PVA/RC) nanofibers. The nanofibers are fabricated through the electrospinning technique and meticulously analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results underscore the fine structure of the nanofiber matrix, with an average diameter of ~68 nm. FTIR analysis substantiates the presence of anthocyanin compounds from RC within the PVA/RC nanofibers, which confirms the integration of beneficial components into …

The waste of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste in Indonesia is a pressing concern due to its slow degradation and potential environmental damage. One promising solution is to utilize polyethylene terephthalate hydrolase from Ideonella sakaiensis (IsPETase), an enzyme that specifically degrades PET. However, inducing the expression of IsPETase synthetic gene in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) has been challenging because much of it remains insoluble. This study aimed to express IsPETase in E. coli Arctic Express (DE3) and optimize the conditions to enhance its production. First, pET22b(+)pelB-IsPETase was inserted into E. coli Arctic Express (DE3). The …

The emerging technology in biomedical engineering requires biocompatible materials, which are also referred to as biomaterials. For a material to be considered biocompatible, it should not interact with human tissues in a harmful way, and vice versa. Various properties of biocompatible materials, such as mechanical and optical properties, have to be considered for different biomedical applications. One of the most popular applications of biomaterials is for contact lenses. Hydrogels, specifically poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels, are among the most popular ones in ophthalmologic applications, especially in soft contact lenses. This paper reviews the use of PHEMA hydrogels as one of the …
