Physical And Optical Properties Of The Germanium-Arsenic-Selenium Glass Forming Region For Precision Glass Molding And Infrared Optics, Peter F. Wachtel Ii
All Dissertations
The growth and advancement of infrared optical systems for thermal imaging, multi-band imaging, hyperspectral imaging, medical diagnostics, and chemical sensing are pushing the material science community to better understand existing materials while also developing new materials. Additionally, the thermal imaging market continues to grow, and system designers are continually being asked to reduce size, weight, and power while reducing costs (SWaP-c). Market growth has shifted optics manufacturing towards higher volume processes such as precision glass molding, but this does require most materials to be recharacterized due to property changes resulting from the process. Affecting the SWaP-c requirements, manufacturing tolerances are …
Integrating Dft And Machine Learning To Predict Structural Properties In High Entropy Alloys, Nathan Linton
Integrating Dft And Machine Learning To Predict Structural Properties In High Entropy Alloys, Nathan Linton
All Dissertations
In the past decade, a paradigm shift in the design of metal alloys has been observed. These new alloys are commonly referred to as high entropy alloys (HEAs), multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs), or complex, concentrated alloys (CCAs). In contrast to conventional alloys, which consist of one main element (for example 80%) with other elements in small amounts, HEAs are made of four or more main elements ranging from 5 to 35% each element. Due to the large presence of multiple elements, HEAs have shown substantial material property improvements over conventional alloys such as steel. For example, they have high ductility …
Crevice Corrosion Mechanisms Of Cocrmo Alloys In Orthopedic Implants: Retrieval Analysis, Nano-Tribocorrosion And Cellular Responses, Hwaran Lee
All Dissertations
Mechanically assisted corrosion and non-mechanically (chemically) driven corrosion in modular junctions of orthopedic implants using cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys remain clinical concerns and may contribute to implant failure. The underlying corrosion mechanisms are not yet fully understood, leaving a critical research gap. We hypothesized that corrosion in modular junctions may be driven by aggressive local environments, including fretting, metal ion release (cobalt ion, Co2+), low pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This dissertation aims to (1) analyze corrosion modes and potential causes in modular junctions; (2) identify chemically driven corrosion modes on CoCrMo alloys using simulated inflammatory modular taper …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Magnetic Nanoparticles To Study Effective Magnetic Anisotropy For Biomedical And Catalytic Applications, Alexander Malaj
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on understanding how to tune the magnetic properties of nanoparticles through controlling the effective magnetic anisotropy (Keff), which is a key variable in determining a nanoparticle’s Néel relaxation time, which will dictate its magnetic behavior in various applications. In this work, magnetocrystalline anisotropy is tuned by synthesizing tri-metallic substituted ferrite (Fe3-x-yMnxCoyO4) nanoparticles with specific metallic compositions that were informed by computer simulations using density functional theory (DFT) to target magnetocrystalline anisotropy values. A drip synthesis was used to control the size and composition of the tri-metallic ferrites, which were revealed to be monodisperse and compositionally mixed by …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Lignin–Pva Hydrogels With Tunable Network Structures, Keturah Bethel
All Dissertations
The ability to directly tune the crosslinked network structure of hydrogels is crucial for their functional applications in various fields, such as water filtration, protein separation, and tissue engineering. By controlling the crosslink density of the hydrogel, one can directly alter the mesh size – i.e., the end-to-end distance between crosslink junctions – and, subsequently, directly alter the hydrogel performance. This work discusses the fabrication and characterization of soft composites containing the biopolymer, lignin, are discussed. Precisely, physically-crosslinked composite lignin–Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were fabricated via the freeze-thaw (F/T) pathway, whereby solutions containing specified amounts of PVA and lignin were …
Local Charge Distortion Due To Cr In Ni-Based Concentrated Alloys, Jacob Fischer
Local Charge Distortion Due To Cr In Ni-Based Concentrated Alloys, Jacob Fischer
All Theses
Due to the presence of multiple elements consisting of a range of atomic radii, local lattice distortion (LLD) is commonly observed in concentrated (and high entropy) alloys. However, since these elements also have diverse electronegativities, recent works show that atoms can have a range of atomic charges. In this work, using density functional theory (DFT), we investigate electronic charge distribution in face centered cubic (FCC) Ni-based alloys and find significant charge-density distortion in HEAs. Specifically, Cr atoms have large charge density distortion that results in a wide range of bond lengths, atomic charges, and electronic density of states in Cr-containing …

Predicting The Ductility Of Tungsten Based Bcc Refractory High Entropy Alloys: A Computational Science Driven Study, Akshay Korpe
All Theses
Bcc refractory high entropy alloys (HEAs) are a relatively new category of metallic alloys that promise excellent irradiation resistance and strength retention at high temperatures but exhibit brittle behavior at room temperatures limiting their formability. Understanding the deformation mechanisms and predicting their ductility at room temperature is a topic of interest in contemporary research.
In this work, multiple independent ductility criteria for quantifying the ductility of these HEAs were studied, calculated and compared using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and continuum mechanics frameworks. These ductility parameters were calculated for various W-Ta-Cr-V alloys and the trends were analyzed for each criteria …

On The Structure, Energy, And Segregation Behavior Of Grain Boundaries In Metallic Systems, Yasir Mahmood
All Dissertations
Nearly all structural metallic systems are multi-component polycrystalline aggregates; their microstructures are composed of crystalline grains that are internally joined at grain boundaries (GBs). This thesis focuses on GB structure, energy, and chemistry, as these greatly influence many material properties and processes, including boundary dynamics during processing treatments or under operating conditions.
Using atomistic simulations, we examine the impact of metastable GB structures on solute segregation. A wide range of GB geometries and metastable structures are used in our study. The Al-Mg alloy is used because it is of interest for light weighting. The atomistic simulation results are used to …

Temperature Gradient Effect On Solid-Liqid Interface Properties Of Al-Cu Alloy: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Prashant Kumar Jha
All Theses
Aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) alloys are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their favorable strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance. These properties make Al-Cu alloys an excellent choice for aircraft structural components that require high strength and low weight. Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has emerged as a promising processing method for Al-Cu alloys in aerospace manufacturing. AM enables the production of lightweight optimized geometries difficult to manufacture through conventional subtractive methods. AM also reduces material waste by only depositing material where needed in the part geometry. The rapid solidification conditions in AM processes motivate …

Preparation Of High Entropy Titanite Pyrochlore And Radiation Stability Study, Adam Gootgeld
Preparation Of High Entropy Titanite Pyrochlore And Radiation Stability Study, Adam Gootgeld
All Theses
Pyrochlore has been studied as a host phase for safe storage of radionuclides and exists naturally with long-term stability with good long-range order [1]. High entropy oxides show promising tunable properties that could demonstrate favorable bulk deposit of radioactive materials such as spent nuclear fuel (Uranium and other actinides). It is proposed that using high entropy oxides (HEOs) as the cation in this framework will shift the gibbs free energy so that radioactive nuclear waste will be stabilized for safe, long-term, eco-friendly storage. We have established a consistent method to fabricate high entropy titanite pyrochlores. In this study, ion beam …
Carbon Fibers From Athabasca Oil-Sand Asphaltenes, Blake Reardon
Carbon Fibers From Athabasca Oil-Sand Asphaltenes, Blake Reardon
All Theses
Carbon fibers possess ultra-high specific strength and modulus. Therefore, the material is popular in aerospace, automotive, and sports industries. Approximately 95% of all carbon fibers are spun from a high-cost precursor, polyacrylonitrile (PAN). There is a need for a cheaper grade of carbon fiber for low-cost applications because about half of carbon fiber cost is associated with precursor cost. A promising alternative to the high-cost PAN precursor is petroleum-based asphaltene. Asphaltenes are highly aromatic and have a high carbon content but lack the purity of the PAN precursor. Processes like the molten- sodium desulfurization upgrading have been used to harvest …
Molecular Dynamics Simulation On Molybdenum Disulfide: Thermal-Mechanical Properties And Phase Transitions Under External Loading, Mahabubur Rahman
Molecular Dynamics Simulation On Molybdenum Disulfide: Thermal-Mechanical Properties And Phase Transitions Under External Loading, Mahabubur Rahman
All Dissertations
Due to their remarkable properties, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received much scientific interest throughout the past decade. Two layers of chalcogen atoms (S, Se, Te) sandwich a layer of transition metal atoms (Mo, W, Ta) to form the three-atom thick unit cell in TMDs. The interaction between TMD "single layers" is mediated by neighboring chalcogen planes and bonded by Van der Waals forces. Due to this weak out-of-plane interaction, bulk samples can be thinned down to a single layer by exfoliation. Among the TMDs, Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) shows promise in the field of electronics, optics, and sensing …

This research considers the problem of using bistable laminates as a mechanical deterrent to the impending impact of a particle. The structure will be controlled through an algorithm that will utilize piezoelectric devices to activate them in unison with the bistable laminate to successfully deter. A novel experimental setup will be constructed to ensure that the bistable laminate stays fixed when acting as a mechanical deterrent. Piezoelectricity is the main driving force of the bistable laminate to morph and this study will use a Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuator that contains piezoelectric ceramic rods in a patch to transfer electrical …
Carbon Fibers From Bio-Based Precursors Derived From Renewable Sources, Sagar Kanhere
Carbon Fibers From Bio-Based Precursors Derived From Renewable Sources, Sagar Kanhere
All Dissertations
Carbon fibers have the highest strength and modulus among all known fibers and are used as reinforcements in high-performance composites [1]. Carbon fibers also have a very low density relative to metals. Therefore, carbon fibers possess ultrahigh specific strength and modulus, which make them desirable for high-performance light-weight composites. A vast majority of commercial carbon fibers are produced from PAN precursors that are expensive, which limits the use of PAN-derived carbon fibers to aerospace applications (e.g., airplanes). However, for costsensitive applications, there is a need for low-cost, moderate performance carbon fibers. Lignin is a low-cost by-product of pulping and biorefining …
Controlled Manipulation Of Droplets On Fibers: Fundamentals And Printing Applications, Yueming Sun
Controlled Manipulation Of Droplets On Fibers: Fundamentals And Printing Applications, Yueming Sun
All Dissertations
In this dissertation, the drop interactions with a single fiber is discussed under an application angle for the development on new Drop-on-Demand (DOD) printhead using a fiber-in-a-tube platform[1] to print highly viscous materials[2]. To control the drop formation and manipulation on fiber, one needs to know how the fiber wetting properties and the fiber diameter influence drop formation. And then, one needs to know the effects of fiber movement in the device on drop formation. These two questions constitute the main theme of this dissertation.
Before this study, it was accepted that the liquids could not form axisymmetric droplets if …
Creep Behavior Of A Ti-Based Multi-Principal Element Alloy, Benjamin Elbrecht
Creep Behavior Of A Ti-Based Multi-Principal Element Alloy, Benjamin Elbrecht

Abstract
The understanding of microstructural damage mechanisms is the foundation of better understanding existing materials and future material development. There are significant challenges to measuring these damage mechanisms in-situ as continuous observation of the state of the microstructure is difficult or impossible for many experimental setups. This thesis presents a method for measuring grain boundary sliding (GBS) and local strain concentrations in-situ via a Heaviside function based algorithm. GBS is the shearing of two grains along their shared grain boundary and is a common damage mechanism in creep which presents as a discontinuity that can be measured with a Heaviside …
