An Investigation Of Various Properties Of The 60co-40cr Alloy, Roger David Moeller
An Investigation Of Various Properties Of The 60co-40cr Alloy, Roger David Moeller
Masters Theses
"The binary alloys of Co-Cr have had a few practical applications in our modern economy due to their high cost. The only extensive field of application has been developed in recent years in the manufacture of high temperature alloys for such equipment as gas turbines, jet engines, and turbo-superchargers. The use of these materials has been limited, due to their high cost, to small parts such as rotor blades in gas turbines. To reduce cost and to add desirable or eliminate undesirable properties, the binary alloys have, from the beginning, been modified with varying amounts of other metals. The modified …
The Solubility Of Copper In High-Iron And Low-Iron Slags, Charles Burroughs Gill
The Solubility Of Copper In High-Iron And Low-Iron Slags, Charles Burroughs Gill
Masters Theses
"A thesis giving the details of construction of a rotating induction furnace and its use to experimentally determine the amounts of copper absorbed in high-iron and low-iron slags at various temperatures. A rotating induction furnace is advantageous for slag study in that the slag is contained in a molten pure metal cup and does not come in contact with any refractory, which would be attacked by the slag and contaminate it. The molten pure metal cup is formed by melting the pure metal in a refractory crucible and spinning this inside an induction coil. The induction coil supplies heat for …
A Study Of Certain Properties Of A Cobalt-Chromium-Manganese Alloy For High Temperature Service, Robert Lewis Ray
A Study Of Certain Properties Of A Cobalt-Chromium-Manganese Alloy For High Temperature Service, Robert Lewis Ray
Masters Theses
"The vast amount of attention that has been given to the development of high-temperature service alloys since about 1940 has resulted in the production of numerous compositions for many elevated temperature applications. Particularly in the aircraft industry, with the jet engine, and the power industry, with the gas turbine, have these applications been most demanding. War research has developed a large number of high-temperature service alloys, many of which are in use today, and the alloy ingredients vary widely...it may be readily be seen that there is no one alloy, or one system of alloys which has been developed that …
Beneficiation Of A Zinc Rich Oxidized Ore From Nuevo LéOn, MéXico, Jorge Casas Nieto
Beneficiation Of A Zinc Rich Oxidized Ore From Nuevo LéOn, MéXico, Jorge Casas Nieto
Masters Theses
"Rich zinc ores are relatively rare now in this country but are still abundant in countries like México, that have not yet developed all their mineral potentialities. In almost all Mexican zinc districts there has been reported sporadic production of oxidized ores, although until now no specially designed plants have been built for the beneficiation of such ores. Generally the zinc carbonate and zinc silicate ores are hand picked and shipped to this country for beneficiation. The Mexican production of zinc ores has never been steady, because of economic factors such as bad transportation systems and lack of market for …
The Age Hardening Of Copper-Manganese-Nickel Alloys, William James Barnett
The Age Hardening Of Copper-Manganese-Nickel Alloys, William James Barnett
Masters Theses
"The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature. Air cooled and water quenched samples will have identical time hardness curves on being aged. Instead of requiring closely controlled conditions characteristic of many age hardening alloys, these alloys cannot be subjected to a thermal mechanical handling which will prevent hardening on their being subsequently heated to the aging temperature. …
Flotation Of The Oxidized Ores Of Zinc, Fred Henry Bunge
Flotation Of The Oxidized Ores Of Zinc, Fred Henry Bunge
Masters Theses
"There is no satisfactory method of concentrating the finely disseminated oxide ores of zinc. Gravity methods of concentrating such ores may be used for coarsely crystalline materials in which the zinc material is free at approximately 10- to 35-mesh or coarser. In addition, gravity methods of concentration do not give a satisfactory separation on those ores in which the gangue mineral is small. As a result there is need for a method of beneficiating various deposits of oxidized zinc ores. The two commercially important oxidized zinc minerals under consideration are smithsonite, the zinc carbonate and hemimorphite, frequently referred to as …
The Examination And Treatment Of Industrial Magnesium Foundry Wastes, Oden Cass Garst
The Examination And Treatment Of Industrial Magnesium Foundry Wastes, Oden Cass Garst
Professional Degree Theses
"The principle forms of magnesium foundry wastes not recovered by industry are fine dusts, such as, sawdust, rotary filings and grindings, and the melting- and refining-pot drosses. The Bureau of Mines has studied waste generation and has developed processes for the treatment of dresses for the recovery of secondary ingot metal and has also developed processes for the mechanical beneficiation of fine dusts. The studies on fine dusts were continued until suitable melting methods for the recovery of ingot metal, approximately meeting the applicable specifications, were developed...Recommendations are made for improved melting methods for magnesium sawdust that increase greatly the …
Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse
Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse
Professional Degree Theses
"Non-ferrous copper base alloys find many applications in industry. Among these alloys one finds the tin bronzes rather widely used for many purposes, and by delving still farther one finds pressure castings as one of their important applications. In many foundries the percentage of rejections due to leakage or porosity is quite high. This is obviously very costly since leakage is generally only found after machining. It is with a view to determine the causes for leakage in pressure castings and to devise methods for its prevention that the work described in this thesis was undertaken. It is not intended …
X-Ray Data Concerning Some Manganese-Copper Alloys, George Lester Mitsch
X-Ray Data Concerning Some Manganese-Copper Alloys, George Lester Mitsch
Bachelors Theses
"Until recently the only commercial method of producing metallic manganese in large ammounts sic was a pyrometallurgical process. Producing a metal of about 97% purity, it was not very satisfactory. With the advent of a process for producing a metal of 99.9 plus % purity electrolytically, introduced by the United States Bureau of Mines, for the first time was there a sufficient quantity of pure manganese available for alloy use. The manganese-copper system was chosen for study because of the inconsistencies in the reports of previous investigators, and because of the properties alloys of these components possess, such as magnetism, …
Constitution And Properties Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, James Harrison Jacobs
Constitution And Properties Of Manganese-Copper Alloys, James Harrison Jacobs
Masters Theses
"This work was undertaken because of the recently revived interest in the use of manganese as an alloying element. This revival of interest has been mainly due to the development of the process for electro-deposition of manganese by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Prior to the work of the bureau of Mines there was no commercial source of high purity manganese. Manganese made by the electrolytic process contains less than .03% impurities, while manganese made by other methods contains as high as 3% impurities. The use of high purity manganese as a base for alloys should open up an …

Die Steels And The Heat-Treatment Of Dies For Use In Die Casting Aluminum Base Alloys, Elmer Gammeter
Die Steels And The Heat-Treatment Of Dies For Use In Die Casting Aluminum Base Alloys, Elmer Gammeter
Professional Degree Theses
"Although the casting of metals is an ancient art, it was not until recent years that metals were cast in large quantities in metallic molds. The increasing demands on the industry for greater production brought about this change which essentially involves the introduction of molds capable of producing numerous castings in preference to the use of non-metallic molds which were destroyed in making the casting"--General Consideration of the Die Casting Process, page 1.
The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat
The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat
Masters Theses
"This particular study of the control of anode corrosion in connection with the production of zinc by electrolytic deposition from commercial solutions is a continuation of work started at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1929. It is not a new problem or even a new phase of the problem, but rather an attempt to confirm some of the ideas brought out in previous work and to perhaps more definitely establish some of the conclusions drawn from insufficient data, by more extensive tests and by attacking the problem from a slightly different angle"--Introduction, page 1.
Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans
Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans
Masters Theses
"In the main ore bodies of the Southeast Missouri Lead Belt the lead occurs as galena disseminated in dolomite. The concentration in the mills is by tabling and flotation. The grade of the concentrates and the recovery of the galena are excellent. However, in certain areas of some of the mines ore has been developed that does not concentrate so readily. Because of its reddish brown color this ore is known locally as "red ore", and the presence of oxidized lead has been suspected. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which oxidized lead minerals were …
Technical Methods Of Analysis For Mill Products, Daniel Elijah Huffman
Technical Methods Of Analysis For Mill Products, Daniel Elijah Huffman
Professional Degree Theses
"In mining and milling operations it is necessary that the assays be known as soon as possible, also that these results are more accurate than the sampling or the operation that produced the samples. This means that both speed and accuracy must be considered when selecting a method for the analysis of samples"--Technical Methods of Analysis, page 1.
Japan, Van Hoose Smith
Japan, Van Hoose Smith
Professional Degree Theses
"This ore is mined from a quartz vein which is refined by small seams of graphitic clay material, and the walls of the vein consist of a sort of graphitic shaley material. The above graphitic materials break down under treatment into a rather peculiar clay which was called primary colloidal slime. The milling process in use consists of stamp milling followed by the separation into sand and primary slime in Dorr Duplex Classifiers. The primary slime overflow from these classifiers, which is all practically thru 220 mesh, is thickened and treated by flotation. Normally and with a good supply of …
A Study Of Anode Corrosion And Its Influence On Cathode Purity In Electrolytic Zinc Production, Harold John Roesser
A Study Of Anode Corrosion And Its Influence On Cathode Purity In Electrolytic Zinc Production, Harold John Roesser
Masters Theses
"Anode corrosion is a problem with which electrolytic zinc producers have been concerned from the beginning of the practice. It has been attacked here from the view of modern practice, using alloyed anodes"--Introduction, page 1.
Flotation Of A Western Complex Ore, Guy Verdier Martin
Flotation Of A Western Complex Ore, Guy Verdier Martin
Masters Theses
"The flotation of the complex sulphide ore, which is the subject of this investigation, has been in progress on a large scale for several years. As the operation has been successful it follows that the ore dressing methods have been developed in much detail. For further improvements an intense investigation is required. The complex nature of the ore opens many avenues of research along some of which clues may be found that will lead to ultimate savings. It is along a few of these avenues that this investigation has been directed. Hence an effort was made to add to the …
Comparison Of Results Obtained On Ores From The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District After Grinding To Different Sizes And Concentrating By Flotation, Hans Maucher
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to compare the phenomena observed in concentrating a zinc ore by flotation, using a constant and new flowsheet as described a few pages later and varying only the sizes to which the headsamples are ground previous to each test"--Summary, page 1.
Producer Gas Practice In The Steel Industry, Horace Wilfred Hodges
Producer Gas Practice In The Steel Industry, Horace Wilfred Hodges
Professional Degree Theses
"The sources of energy for the industries are: 1. Water power; 2. coal, lignite, peat and Wood; 3. Natural and Artificial Gas; 4. Oil; 5. The Sun;s Rays; 6. The tides. The latter two sources may be eliminated from immediate practical use, owing to their cost and limited application. Therefore, the burden for many years will rest upon Water power, coal, gas and oil. We may also eliminate water power from the source of energy of the steel industry, due to the Mill's geographical location. Hence, for the near future, the steel industry's soul rests upon the production of coal, …
The Testing Of Steel For Wear By Abrasives, Thomas Evan Eagan
The Testing Of Steel For Wear By Abrasives, Thomas Evan Eagan
Professional Degree Theses
"The tests herein reported were conducted with the idea of finding a steel which would give improved wear as roll shells in the comminution of ores...Not only must the wear be considered, but also the physical properties. It is desirable to have a steel of such Tensile and impact values that no failure by breakage would occur until the shell was worn very thin. The ideal condition being to wear the shell down to zero thickness, but such cannot be accomplished"--Introduction, page 2.
Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke
Laboratory Concentration Of The Missouri Iron Ores Of Iron Mountain And Pilot Knob, Strathmore Ridley Barnott Cooke
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether the more important iron ores of Missouri would be amenable to beneficiation to produce high grade concentrates. In the southeastern section of Missouri are found many small deposits of high grade iron ores, and a few large deposits of comparatively low grade ore. The former consist chiefly of red and brown hematite and limonite ores that are in no need of beneficiation. the low grade iron orebodies are relatively large in extent, and, if they could be beneficiated successully [sic] and economically would be of value. Accordingly, the major portion of …
Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes
Salts In Tri-State Mill Waters: Their Ill-Effect On The Flotation Of Zinc And Their Removal, Warren Lincoln Howes
Masters Theses
"The application of the flotation process has become one of the greatest innovations in modern ore dressing. In a comparatively short span of years it has grown to be one of the most powerful tools of the ore dressing engineer. Flotation is particularly adapted for the recovery of finely ground mineral and has thus enabled the miner to open up enormous deposits of low grade, disseminated ores for profitable treatment. In conjunction with other methods, the process has raised the recovery in practically every ore dressing plant by the treatment of slimes which otherwise would go to waste, carrying valuable …
A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman
A Power Study Of A Laboratory Ball Mill, Frederick Clearman
Masters Theses
"Ball milling practice in the ore dressing industry is largely empirical. Although many investigators have worked on various of its phases, the present operating methods are mostly a matter of cut-and-try, with the result that the industry is not guided by its underlying principles. Consequently, practice varies extensively with regard to nearly all conditions of operations. Even in neighboring concentrators such factors as speed, ball charge, and ore load differ in similar ball mills. Since fine grinding is continually becoming of more importance, and often accounts for thirty per cent of the milling cost, it is very necessary that a …
The Coarse Crushing Plant Of The Desloge Consolidated Lead Company, Horace Reynolds Stahl, Robert Gibson O'Meara
The Coarse Crushing Plant Of The Desloge Consolidated Lead Company, Horace Reynolds Stahl, Robert Gibson O'Meara
Professional Degree Theses
"The Desloge consolidated Lead Company is located at Desloge, Missouri, in the disseminated lead district of St. Francois County. The crushing plant was built during 1925 to replace crushing installations at three mines. The plant was designed to deliver 2,000 tons of 7 to 9 mm. feed per day to the concentrating plant. Operating conditions have since improved so that the present tonnage is about 2,200 toms of 6.5 mm. feed per day, operating 16 hours. The essential mineral is galena, more or less finely disseminated in a dolomitic gangue. The ore is comparatively soft and easily crushed"--Introduction, page 1.
Beneficiation Of Manganese Ores, Michael V. Healey
Beneficiation Of Manganese Ores, Michael V. Healey
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to study the means of beneficiating domestic manganese ores in order that a marketable product may be made. Within the limits of the paper the term "Manganese ores" is applied to those ores mined primarily for their manganese content, to the exclusion of manganiferous iron and silver ores"--Object, page 1.
On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers
On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers
Professional Degree Theses
"After making a survey of the available information on the subject of permanent growth in grey iron castings, it was found that very little definite information is available and such as is available does not seem to satisfy all conditions. As is perhaps generally known, grey iron castings withstand a growth in volume upon repeated heating and cooling, which growth is a permanent deformation and is not a function of the temperature co-efficient"--Review of Published Work, page 3.

Effect Of The Use Of Old Retorts As Grog And Of Zinc Oxide Upon The Properties Of Bodies For The Manufacture Of Retorts, Elmer Gammeter
Masters Theses
"In the fall of 1924 the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy began an investigation of the properties of raw materials used in the manufacture of retorts for the zinc industry. The investigation proceeded cooperatively until December, 1926, when the Bureau of Mines withdrew from ceramic research. The School then took over and is completing the problem as outlined. The first phase of the investigation had for its object the determination of the properties of the fireclays and body mixtures now in …
Electrothermic Dry Distillation Of Zinc, Ira Nathan Goff
Electrothermic Dry Distillation Of Zinc, Ira Nathan Goff
Masters Theses
"Although the work described in this thesis cannot be considered as complete, until certain mechanical changes have been made and the furnace operated continuously over a considerable period of time, this electrothermic dry distillation process for the extraction of zinc from ores offers excellent commercial possibilities. The literature has been reviewed, the process that was used at East St. Louis described, and the results of work at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, Rolla, Missouri along the line of electrothermic metallurgy of zinc considered"--Summary, page 58.
