Design And Analysis For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides: Quarterly Progress Report 11/16/01- 2/15/02, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

An important aspect of the Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) program is the development of a casting process by which volatile actinide element (i.e., americium) can be incorporated into metallic alloy fuel pins. The traditional metal fuel casting process uses an inductively heated crucible.

This process works well for the fabrication of metal fuel pins traditionally composed of alloys of uranium and plutonium, but does not work well when highly volatile actinides are included in the melt. The problem occurs both during the extended time period required to superheat the alloy melt as well as when the chamber must be evacuated. …

Effect Of Cr3+ And So42- On The Structure Of Rust Layer Formed On Steels By Atmospheric Corrosion, Masato Yamashita, Hitoshi Uchida,, Desmond C. Cook .

Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of chromium ion (Cr3+) and sulfate ion (SO42-) on the structure of the rust layer formed by thin electrolyte-film corrosion of low-alloy steels has been examined. By using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, it was found that coexistence of Cr3+ and SO42- in the electrolyte film covering the steel surface quickly forms the Cr-goethite (α-(Fe 1-X, CrX)OOH) layer which has been known as the final protective rust layer. Scanning vibrating electrode measurements showed that the rust layer formed under the electrolyte film containing Cr3+ and SO42- …

Experimental Investigation Of Steel Corrosion In Lead Bismuth Eutectic (Lbe): Characterization, Species Identification, And Chemical Reactions, John Farley, Dale L. Perry, Allen L. Johnson

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The goal of the present research is to achieve a basic understanding of corrosion of steels by Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). Liquid LBE is under consideration in the transmuter as both a spallation target and as a blanket coolant. There have been previous studies of LBE, especially by the Russians, who have over 80 reactor-years experience with LBE coolant in their Alpha-class submarine reactors. However, a fundamental understanding and verification of its role in the corrosion of steels is still very incomplete. We have begun a program of post-experiment testing and analysis on steel samples that have been in intimate …

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

This research program will analyze various steel samples that have been exposed to LBE as part of the national program to develop LBE and transmutation technologies. This information will be paramount in developing engineering efforts to control, avoid, and/or minimize the effect of corrosion of steels by LBE in transmuter and LBE systems. Additionally, this program provides UNLV researchers with hands-on experience that will be crucial in developing the UNLV LBE program, supporting the University’s mission with the ISTC target complex, and the future development of additional facilities to examine LBE systems.

The research group plans to test the hypothesis …

Hydrogen-Induced Embrittlement Of Candidate Target Materials For Applications In Spallation-Neutron-Target Systems, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole, Zhiyong Wang, David W. Hatchett

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Spallation-neutron-sources, such as those under investigation for use in accelerator-driven transmutation systems, generate neutrons through the collision of high-energy protons, or charged hydrogen atoms, with heavy metal targets such as lead. As a result, these systems also tend to deposit a significant amount of hydrogen in the materials of the transmuter target and superstructure. This can result in accelerated corrosion and changes in the properties of the exposed materials. Of particular importance is a phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement, in which materials lose their ductility (ability to deform under stress) and become brittle (more susceptible to fracture) after reacting with hydrogen. …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Task V 4th Quarterly Report, Samir Moujaes Jan 2002

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Task V 4th Quarterly Report, Samir Moujaes

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The project is moving on target with the newly realigned objective set for the Phase I. Through close communications with Dr. Li and Dr. Jinsuo Zhang from LANL a realignment of the simulation work has been recommended. The reason for that is the vendor of STAR-CD/CHEMKIN had not perfected yet the final coupling of the post processing of output for any potential surface chemistry reaction taking place on the inside pipe surface of the LBE loop. This is because the coupling of CHEMKIN and STAR-CD has been done fairly recently.

Our final effort has been to generate using an innovative …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Many of the international efforts to develop transmutation technology, including the U.S., Russian, and European scientific communities, have determined that lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a potential material for use as a both a spallation target and a coolant. To exploit this potential, a more thorough understanding of the effect and rates of corrosion on steels, particularly non-Russian alloys, inside the LBE systems is required. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE systems has been observed to drastically reduce the corrosion of structural steels in LBE. However, the transport of oxygen and formation of corrosion products is not well understood; …

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Alloy EP-823 has been developed as a structural material for Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) systems, such as those under development for nuclear transmutation systems, as well as other applications. However, very little data regarding the mechanical properties of this alloy exists in the open literature, particularly in the temperature regime of interest for transmutation systems. To address this need, the UNLV research team, in collaboration with researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory, has developed a research program to evaluate tensile properties of Alloy EP-823 stainless steel at elevated temperatures, which is not being performed at any other facility to date. …

Formation Of Copper Dots In Copper Decoration Technique, Swee Yong Pung Jan 2002

Formation Of Copper Dots In Copper Decoration Technique, Swee Yong Pung

Student Works (2000-2009)

Copper ions are dissolved from highly pure copper plate into the methanol during copper decoration process. As a result, copper concentration in methanol is increased with time. The copper concentration in methanol measured by ICP-OES is correlated well with the calculated value based on the magnitude of current and time during the process. Consequently, higher magnitude of current can be applied to build up copper concentration in methanol in shorter period. When copper ions are ejected in methanol, they are positively charged. They experience force from electric field and migrate towards oxide surface. Eventually, these copper ions will be discharged …

Analysis Of Corrosion Of Steel By Lead Bismuth Eutectic, John Farley, Dale L. Perry Nov 2001

Analysis Of Corrosion Of Steel By Lead Bismuth Eutectic, John Farley, Dale L. Perry

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

We examined stainless samples that were exposed to LBE in experiments conducted by the Russians, under contract to Los Alamos. We examined both corroded and uncorroded samples using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), the Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDAX) Spectroscopy, and the X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS). We found that the surface of the corroded sample is covered by oxygen-containing compounds, presumably mostly iron oxide. In samples exposed for shorter times or lower temperatures, we found that some areas were covered by an oxide layer, and some areas was uncovered. We found that the level of Cr in the uncovered area is …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report August 16,2001- November 15, 2001, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the AAA proposed application.

Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with very limited density. The transport of oxygen and corrosion products, their interaction and variation of corrosion/precipitation along the flow are not well understood.

The first subtask of this project involves using a …

Quantitative Analysis Of Ultra-Fine Goethite In Rust Layer On Steel Using Mossbauer And X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy, Masato Yamashita, Toshihei Misawa, H. E. Townsend, D. C. Cook

Physics Faculty Publications

We have proposed determination procedure of the relative amounts of rust constituents of steel. Mossbauer spectroscopy provides the relative amounts of crystalline rust constituents including ultra-fine crystals. A quantitative analysis of ultra-fine crystals is possible with the resolution of several percent by comparing the Mossbauer results with the relative amounts of rust constituents determined by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy.

Electrodeposition Of Copper On Polished Copper Electrode, Jia Tsung Ling Jan 2000

Electrodeposition Of Copper On Polished Copper Electrode, Jia Tsung Ling

Student Works (2000-2009)

This project studies the surface morphology of the copper deposit from three different bath solutions on polished copper (3.1 mm in diameter) electrode by using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The behaviour of glycine as an additive in a bath solution containing 0.3 M of copper (II) sulphate and 2.2 M of sulphuric acid was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. In this project, glycine did not involved directly in the reaction of CU²⁺/CU couple but increased the potential and current density of the plating process. However, glycine has the properties for inhibiting the deposition of copper onto the copper disc. Moreover, block …

Characterization Of Iron Oxides And Atmospheric Corrosion Of Steel, Sei Jin Oh

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The study of corrosion behavior was performed using three different analytical techniques, which provided information on the formation, development and layering of iron oxides on the corrosion products as a function of atmospheric conditions, exposure time and type of steel. In particular, the protective layer formed on weathering steel was investigated as a function of different amounts of alloying elements in the steel, atmospheric conditions and exposure times. Combined together, the results provided a better understanding of the atmospheric corrosion behavior of steel, and formed a part of database of the atmospheric corrosion characteristics.

Accurate characterization of the iron oxides …

Mechanical Alloying Of Nitrogen Into Iron Powders, J. Rawers, D. Govier, D. C. Cook Jan 1996

Mechanical Alloying Of Nitrogen Into Iron Powders, J. Rawers, D. Govier, D. C. Cook

Physics Faculty Publications

Mechanical alloying of nitrogen into bcc-fe powder is a very effective and efficient means of obtaining very high concentration of nitrogen in micron-size iron particles. Mechanical alloying increases the concentration of nitrogen in the iron powder far in excess of the bcc-Fe lattice low nitrogen solubility, however most of the infused nitrogen resides on the nano-size grain boundaries and in nano-size bct-fe that forms during mechanical alloying.

Identification And Characterization Of The Iron-Zinc Intermetallics Formed In Galvanneal Steel, Richard Frederick George Grant Apr 1995

Identification And Characterization Of The Iron-Zinc Intermetallics Formed In Galvanneal Steel, Richard Frederick George Grant

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The demand to improve the corrosion resistance of steel sheet, particularly for use within the automotive industry, has led to a dramatic increase in the use of coated steels in place of cold-rolled sheet steel. Galvanneal steel results from the post annealing of the zinc-coated steel sheet, in which iron and zinc are interdiffused to form an iron-zinc alloy coating. Within this alloy coating, four main iron-zinc phases, Zeta, Delta, Gamma-1, and Gamma may be present. Manufacture of the most suitable coating requires identifying which phases form during the galvannealing process, an understanding of the properties of each phase and …

Calculated Point Defect Properties Of The Intermetallic Compounds Nickel Titanium (Niti) And Iron Titanium (Feti), Russell T. Lutton

Theses and Dissertations

Atomistic simulation with a modified version of the DYNAMO code was used to calculate the point defect properties of the intermetallic compounds nickel titanium and iron titanium. The calculated energies are believed to be experimentally accurate to within +/- 0.1 eV. Vacant Ni or Fe lattice sites were preferred and had energies of 6.356 eV for NiTi and 5.899 eV for FeTi. Removing a Ti atom resulted in a neighboring antisite defect caused by migration of a Ni or Fe atom into the vacant Ti site. These configurations had energies of 7.024 eV for NiTi and 6.336 eV for FeTi. …

Effects Of Sample Orientation On The Corrosion Of Zinc In Ammonium Sulfate And Sodium Hydroxide Solutions, D. Abayarathna, Edward Boyd Hale, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Y. M. Wang, D. Radovic

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The corrosion and electrochemical properties of three zinc single crystal surfaces with different orientations have been investigated. In near-neutral 1 M (NH4)2SO4, the corrosion rates on all three surfaces were found to be similar. However, the SEM morphologies of the corresponding corroded surfaces were markedly different from each other, but consistent with preferential attack of {1120} surfaces. In alkaline 0.5 N NaOH solution, the three sample orientations showed significantly different reactivities, with the (1120) surface exhibiting the highest reactivity and corrosion rate. Here, passivation ultimately occurred and the difference in the corrosion performance of …

Premartensitic Anelasticity In Indium-Thallium Alloys., Manfred Wuttig, C. Y. Lei, Tetsuro Suzuki

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The linear and nonlinear low frequency internal friction of In-24 at. pct Tl displays a Curie-Weiss type behavior in the temperature range above the transformation temperature. The critical temperature equals the martensite start temperature. It is proposed that the origin of the observed internal friction is the diffusion-controlled interaction of substitutional atoms with the premartensitic strain modulation, tweed.
