Silk As A Biomaterial Paste For Biomimetic Composite, Sang Hyun Park Aug 2016

Silk As A Biomaterial Paste For Biomimetic Composite, Sang Hyun Park

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Silk is a highly promising biomaterial with unique bio-physicochemical properties, such as excellent mechanical and optical properties, biocompatibility and programmable biodegradability. Among many different types, silk from domesticated silkworm, bombyx mori has received wide attention owing to its availability in virtually unlimited quantities and ease of extraction. In this study, we investigated silkworm silk as a protein glue to realize nacre-like composites. We have employed spin assisted layer-by-layer technique to fabricate ultrathin free-standing biocomposite films. Two different composites have been studied: (i) graphene oxide (GO)/silk and (ii) chitin/silk. From our prior work, it is known that the adsorption of amphiphilic …

Dna Bound Avicel Network: The Beginnings Of A Self-Healing Material, Emily R. Coleman, Michael R. Ladisch, Eduardo Ximenes, Marissa Karp, Kathleen Howell, Seockmo Ku, Nathan Mosier, Iman Beheshti Tabar Aug 2016

Dna Bound Avicel Network: The Beginnings Of A Self-Healing Material, Emily R. Coleman, Michael R. Ladisch, Eduardo Ximenes, Marissa Karp, Kathleen Howell, Seockmo Ku, Nathan Mosier, Iman Beheshti Tabar

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Self-healing materials could potentially provide many improvements to engineering projects, including reduced maintenance and cost, and increased lifespan. It is desired to create a self-healing material proof of concept, which can then be altered for eventual application to the surfaces of small satellites with the goal of increasing material lifetimes. The intrinsic properties and abilities of DNA base pairing will be studied as a first test of proof of concept. The exploratory research reported in this short communication utilizes oxidation of small (50µm) particles of Avicel using TEMPO, followed by activation of Avicel particles via an EDC (1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride) …

Alginate Hydrogels As Three-Dimensional Scaffolds For In Vitro Culture Models Of Growth Plate Cartilage Development And Porcine Embryo Elongation, Taylor D. Laughlin Jul 2016

Alginate Hydrogels As Three-Dimensional Scaffolds For In Vitro Culture Models Of Growth Plate Cartilage Development And Porcine Embryo Elongation, Taylor D. Laughlin

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The establishment of in vitro culture models utilizes tissue engineering principles to design functional mimics of in vivo environments in vitro. Advantages for the use of in vitro culture models include ethical alleviation of animal models for therapeutic testing, cost efficiency, and a greater ability to study specific mechanisms via a systematic, ground-up approach to development. In this thesis, alginate hydrogels are utilized in the development of in vitro culture models of porcine embryo elongation and growth plate cartilage development. First, the effect of scaffold and modifications to the scaffold were explored in both projects. In order to modulate …

Design Of Nanoparticle-Based Carriers For Targeted Drug Delivery, Xiaojiao Yu, Ian Trase, Muqing Ren, Kayla Duval, Xing Guo, Zi Chen Jul 2016

Design Of Nanoparticle-Based Carriers For Targeted Drug Delivery, Xiaojiao Yu, Ian Trase, Muqing Ren, Kayla Duval, Xing Guo, Zi Chen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nanoparticles have shown promise as both drug delivery vehicles and direct antitumor systems, but they must be properly designed in order to maximize efficacy. Computational modeling is often used both to design new nanoparticles and to better understand existing ones. Modeled processes include the release of drugs at the tumor site and the physical interaction between the nanoparticle and cancer cells. In this paper, we provide an overview of three different targeted drug delivery methods (passive targeting, active targeting, and physical targeting) and compare methods of action, advantages, limitations, and the current stages of research. For the most commonly used …

Solution Casting And Mechanical Testing Of Arabinan-Cellulose Nanocomposites, Kevin Su, Alina Lusebrink Jun 2016

Solution Casting And Mechanical Testing Of Arabinan-Cellulose Nanocomposites, Kevin Su, Alina Lusebrink

Materials Engineering

The purpose of this work was to investigate methods to produce consistent, reliable, and testable thin films of arabinan-cellulose nanocomposites. Mechanical properties and composition of the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus spines served as motivation for this research. The high specific strength and stiffness, biodegradability, and sustainability of these spines inspired the creation of composites fabricated from the same materials found in cactus spines: arabinan and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). Arabinan serves as the matrix material and NCC as the reinforcement. To explore the feasibility of using a non-toxic solvent, different solution casting techniques with water as a solvent were investigated. Ultrasonication was …

Reducing Food And Packaging Waste Through Developing Edible Fruit Based Packaging Prototypes, Melanie Thatcher Jun 2016

Reducing Food And Packaging Waste Through Developing Edible Fruit Based Packaging Prototypes, Melanie Thatcher

Materials Engineering

Packaging is used to contain, preserve, protect, and advertise both manufactured and natural products. In 2013 it was reported that over thirty percent of solid waste in the United States was from packaging. One way to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment is to create a solution that is edible and sourced from a waste or secondary food product that is not currently being utilized. Food-contact packaging made from recycled materials must meet strict U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations to be utilized as raw material for packaging. Fruit pomace is a candidate material since it may …

A Numerical Approach To Investigate The Influence Of Deformable Blockages On Blood Flow In An Elastic Vessel, Tai-Hsien Wu Apr 2016

A Numerical Approach To Investigate The Influence Of Deformable Blockages On Blood Flow In An Elastic Vessel, Tai-Hsien Wu

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

In this work, we presented a new numerical approach to study the deformation of blockages and fluid properties in an elastic blood vessel. In computational hemodynamics, only few of the current numerical models considered the elasticity of vessels, and those models were difficult to extend to other topics like the deformation of blockages in elastic blood vessels. In addition, the approach that we employed is especially effective on visualization. A validation for the present method is carried out by comparing the simulation results with a theoretical prediction of the deformation of the pulmonary blood vessel in a steady flow. Subsequently, …

Inhibition Of Bacterial Growth And Prevention Of Bacterial Adhesion With Localized Nitric Oxide Delivery, Julia Osborne Jan 2016

Inhibition Of Bacterial Growth And Prevention Of Bacterial Adhesion With Localized Nitric Oxide Delivery, Julia Osborne

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Bacterial infections continue to be a problem at the site of an indwelling medical device, and over the years, various bacterial strains have become more resistant to current antibiotic treatments. Bacterial infection at an indwelling medical device can be dangerous and affect the performance of the medical device which can ultimately lead to the failure of the device due to bacterial resistance to treatment.

Nitric Oxide (NO) has been shown to possess antibacterial properties to prevent and inhibit bacterial growth. NO releasing coatings on indwelling medical devices could provide a reduction in bacterial infections that occur at the device site …
