Machine Learning Design And Experimental Production Of Recycled Aluminum Alloys With Magnesium And Iron, Skylar Patten

Recycling aluminum saves up to 95% of the energy required for primary production but introduces impurities such as iron that limit alloy performance. The Al-Mg-Fe system, though commercially used, remains underexplored. This work applies machine learning with Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization (MOBO) using Thermo-Calc simulations to design Al-Mg-Fe-Si-Cu-Zn alloys with improved castability and reduced porosity. The optimization targeted freezing range, shrinkage, drag coefficient, and microstructural parameters, identifying compositions with high Mg, Si, and Cu and low Zn as optimal. Predicted alloys were experimentally cast and characterized, with yield strengths exceeding 95 MPa and elongation comparable to commercial 319 aluminum in the …

Electrochemical glucose sensing technologies have undergone significant evolution, with continual advancements aimed at improving sensitivity, selectivity, and user convenience. This review systematically explores the development of emerging nonenzymatic glucose sensor designs. Nonenzymatic sensors are critically evaluated for their ability to overcome enzymatic limitations, leveraging novel materials and catalytic mechanisms. Additionally, the emergence of smartphone-integrated glucose monitoring systems is highlighted as the fifth generation, representing a paradigm shift toward personalized, real-time healthcare management. Thylakoid-based photosynthetic biofuel cells (TBFCs) harness the inherent light-driven electron transfer pathways of photosynthesis to enable sustainable solar-to-electrical energy conversion. While TBFCs offer a unique route toward biohybrid energy systems, their practical deployment is hindered by sluggish electron transfer kinetics, unstable redox mediators, and inefficient interfacing between biological and electrode components. Vegetable oil-based lubricants have attracted increased research attention in recent decades as sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based lubricants in metal machining. Current work in situ investigated the mechanisms of the interparticle interactions that evolve in dilute aqueous alumina suspensions subjected to alternating current (AC) electric field and the effects of solid loading of suspensions. The interactions were investigated for alumina suspension compositions in the 0.005‒0.04 vol.% solid loading range. Field‐induced interactions evolved via particle motion and dynamic assembly, chain formation parallel to the direction of the applied field and chain growth, chain cross‐linking, and chain thickening. This study presents a novel low-temperature, combustion synthesis (CS) approach for the rapid production of belite-rich cements. CS leverages the exothermic heat released from the combustion of biofuels such as lignin and/or biomass, intermixed with pelletized limestone and quartz. At an imposed furnace temperature of ∼700°C (as opposed to 1200°C–1300°C required in a conventional kiln), the source materials are rapidly transformed to belite, resulting in energy, emissions, and economic benefits. High entropy alloys (HEAs) are an exciting new class of materials. HEAs combine multiple elements in concentrations ranging from 5% to 35%. The large variation in concentrations increases the alloy’s entropy, stabilizing it. The stabilization is due to both an increased configurational entropy and increases the vibrational entropy when the alloy is at higher temperatures. This was seen for both MoNbTaW and FeNiMoW by combining the atomistic techniques: density functional theory (DFT) and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). This study presents the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of a novel core-shell nanoparticle composed of a maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) core and a europium-doped cerium oxide (EuCNP) shell, developed for potential use in cancer theranostics. Using a co-precipitation method, Fe2O3–EuCNP core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized and compared against control samples of CNPs, EuCNPs, and Fe2O3. Improper healing of bone fractures and limited regeneration of bone following bone tumor resection remain a prevalent complication worldwide. Long-term effects of this include joint instability, limited movement, and arthritis. Bone infections (osteomyelitis), reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation via excessive inflammation, and underlying conditions such as osteoporosis can contribute to suboptimal bone tissue regeneration. ROS accumulation stimulates osteoblast apoptosis, while promoting osteoclast differentiation. These processes inhibit mineralization and osteogenesis. Highly stretchable strain sensors are essential components in soft electronics, enabling integration of sensing and signal transmission into deformable systems. This thesis explores the fabrication and characterization of coaxial core–shell fibers composed of a conductive carbon grease core and an elastomeric silicone shell. These fibers were produced using coaxial direct ink writing (DIW), a versatile additive manufacturing technique that allows continuous deposition of multi-material filaments. The goal was to achieve mechanically compliant yet electrically stable fibers capable of withstanding large deformations, suitable for applications in wearable electronics and soft robotics.

This dissertation discloses the physics, fabrication, and characterization of high-performance scintillator detectors based on epitaxial InAs quantum dots (QDs) in GaAs. The detector crystals grown include monolithically integrated In0.35GaAs photodetectors with Al0.92-0.6In0.03-0.35Ga0.05As metamorphic buffer layers (MBL). A device fabrication process was developed for the lithographic patterning, chemical etching, contact metallization and readout integration of materials grown by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on 3-inch GaAs (001) wafers. Low capacitance integration with readout electronics was achieved through wire bonds to custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) with commercial components.

Piezoelectric materials possess a unique ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical signals and have broad industrial applications. However, monolithic piezoelectric materials such as piezoceramics and piezopolymers often suffer from inherent trade-offs among mechanical strength, elasticity, and durability. Piezoelectric composites, typically consisting of a polymer matrix with ceramic reinforcements, offer a solution by combining the advantages of each constituent. Although copper smelter dust (CSD) is classified as hazardous waste, it also serves as a valuable secondary resource, offering potential for the recovery of critical elements. In this study, CSD samples were collected from the waste heat boiler (WHB) and electrostatic precipitator (ESP) units connected to the flash smelting furnace at a copper smelter. The representative samples were extensively characterized by particle size, and chemical and mineralogical analyses. This study investigates the degradation of norfloxacin using a Ba0.8Ca0.2TiO3 (BCTO) perovskite composite synthesized via a simple solid-state method. Variety of characterization techniques, including photoluminescence spectra, powder X-Ray Diffraction, UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectra, FE-SEM and Fourier-Transform Infrared spectra confirm the structural and optical properties of BCTO. Electrical characterization further elucidates its conductive properties. The BCTO composite demonstrates an impressive 87% degradation rate of norfloxacin, attributed to its reduced electron-hole recombination, enhanced light harvestation, and improved charge carrier mobility. Kinetic studies indicate that the degradation process adheres to a pseudo-first-order model, with BCTO outperforming both pure BaTiO3 and conventional photocatalysts. These …

Bioglass® 45S5 is widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its excellent bioactivity. However, its low mechanical strength remains a major limitation. In this study, 25 wt% barium titanate (BaTiO3; BT) was incorporated into 45S5 scaffolds to improve mechanical performance and modulate bioactivity. The 3D scaffolds were fabricated using the foam replication method and exhibited interconnected porosity, with average pore sizes of 471 ± 94 μm (45S5) and 598 ± 58 μm (45S5/BT25), closely resembling human bone. Thermal management technology is a crucial strategy for reducing energy consumption in buildings by utilizing stored solar energy. This study developed a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based phase-change material (PCM), selected for its superior physicochemical stability, high latent enthalpy, and environmental compatibility. To enhance thermal conductivity, 20 vol% magnetite (Fe₃O₄) was incorporated into the PEG matrix. The composite was synthesized via an ultrasonic-assisted method (37 kHz, 80°C, 1 h). X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the crystalline structure of PEG and the cubic phase of Fe3O4, while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) validated the synthesis by identifying Fe–O, C–H, and O–H functional groups. Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is a promising photocatalyst for visible-light-driven environmental remediation. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is highly dependent on synthesis conditions, particularly hydrothermal temperature, which governs its structural, optical, and electronic properties. In this study, BiOI was synthesized via a hydrothermal method at temperatures of 120℃, 150℃, 180℃, and 210℃ to investigate the effect of temperature on its photocatalytic performance systematically. This research investigates the effect of Pt and Pd decoration on the structure of SnO2 slant nanorods (SNRs) films produced using DC magnetron sputtering with Oblique Angle Deposition (OAD), as well as their impact on the films' physical properties and gas sensing applications. Pt and Pd were deposited onto the SnO2 SNRs for the same duration of 20 s each. Following deposition, all the films were heat-treated temperature at 400℃ for 2 h. The study explores the process of creating porous AC from coconut husks using hydrochloric acid and carbonization at varying temperatures, followed by doping AC with nickel oxide to create an AC/NiO polymer composite with varying thicknesses. The electrical characteristics and energy storage performance of BNKT-BT lead-free piezoceramics were examined. All ceramics were produced via the mixed oxide technique. The findings indicated that the density of this ceramic system varied between 5.61 and 5.83 g/cm3. Conditions with 2.0 mol% (BT=0.02) and 6.0 mol% (BT=0.06) exhibited the largest dielectric constant (er) at both ambient temperature and elevated temperature, with values of 1307 and 4272, respectively. The ceramic sample with BT = 0.06 exhibited the highest values of %strain ~0.13 and a d*33 ~179.65 pm/V. Furthermore, BT-doped ceramics yielded optimal energy storage densities compared to undoped BNKT ceramics. The …
