The most common gas sensors are based on chemically induced changes in electrical resistivity and necessarily involve making imperfect electrical contacts to the sensing materials, which introduce errors into the measurements. We leverage thermal- and chemical-induced changes in microwave propagation characteristics (i.e., S-parameters) to compare ZnO and surface-anchored metal-organic-framework (HKUST-1 MOF) thin films as sensing materials for detecting ethanol vapor, a typical volatile organic compound (VOC), at low temperatures. We show that the microwave propagation technique can detect ethanol at relatively low temperatures (<100 >°C), and afford new mechanistic insights that are inaccessible with the traditional dc-resistance-based measurements. In addition, …100>

Locally slender open cross-section members are susceptible to significant twisting and high warping torsion stresses. Torsion considerations are complicated by whether it is derived as a first-order effect from loading or a second-order effect from instability. Previous direct torsion experiments on lipped channels have shown significant inelastic reserve in limited cases. The current design for combined bending and torsion interaction has some limitations, including only considering the first yield in torsion and ignoring the cross-section slenderness in torsion. A parametric study is conducted to predict the torsion capacity in locally slender cross-sections. Shell finite element models of lipped Cee and …

Amino-Polymer For Co2 Capture By Vacuum Swing Adsorption, Sean Billy
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The applications of sorbent compounds in conjunction with amines and other additives is an innovative method at combating CO2 pollution. An ideal solution would use an amine sorbent to trap the high levels of absorbed CO2 with a low binding energy (less than 45 kJ/mol) and subsequently release them into a stored vessel at ambient temperature with a vacuum swing adsorption system. Attempts at finding a best mixture will be conducted through the usage of a vacuum swing system, utilizing a bed syringe containing the sorbent mix and a vacuum syringe to pull on and subsequently release the CO2 into …

Stereolithography is a type of 3D printing that allows liquid photopolymer resin to be cured into layers that make up a 3D object. Creation of such resins for these purposes can require a significant amount of time to test and develop, and commercial resins also require some amount of testing for printer settings before use. This paper reviews how stereolithography works, the materials used, and experimentation done to compare the resin properties to the determined curing times. Using several commercially available resins, varying base exposure and layer exposure times were used to determine the lowest possible curing time that gave …

Analysis And Comparison Of Nir Pigments For "Cool" Coating Applications, Karey Steinmetz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal of this research is to compare our own formulation of near infrared radiation (NIR) pigment coating to commercialized ones. These near infrared coatings are designed to be used on roofs of buildings to keep the buildings from absorbing the heat from the sun’s radiation. This would keep the building cooler and use less energy and money to cool the building. In this study, Styrofoam was used to build a lab-scale house and were put under heat lamps that mimicked the sun. Temperatures were taken at three different locations to determine the effectiveness of the pigmented coatings. Color and …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of recycling PLA filament for 3D printing on its material properties. After examining these effects, PLA and carbon fiber additives were mixed with recycled PLA pellets in different ratios to attempt to regain material properties lost in the recycling process. To complete these findings, an experiment was design and executed.
The research found that tensile strength during multiple iterations of recycling remained mostly unaffected, however, the strain degraded exponentially. In the PLA additive study, high ratios of PLA additive were able to increase the strength and strain properties of the …
Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Analysis Of Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Fly Ash Mortar By Means Of Transmission Line Modeling, Padraig Stack
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is an important non-destructive tool that allows for a deeper understanding of the electrochemical processes and mechanisms occurring in an electrochemical cell. Equivalent electrical circuits (EECs) are used to model the impedance data into electrical components, such as resistors and capacitors, on a circuit. Current potentiostat offers software packages that can analyze the frequency response, but the software only supports “simple” EEC that can be written as fixed electrical components in some combination of series and parallel. Park and Macdonald propose a transmission line model (TLM) that does not use lumped-element models, instead, the values of …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Electrochemical chloride removal (ECR) was tested to see its effectiveness in preventing corrosion on rebar samples within 3.5 wt% sodium chloride concrete. In order to do this, three scenarios were evaluated using electrochemical techniques such as cyclic potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectrsoscopy as well as visual inspections. The three scenarios that were evaluated were one with no chlorides present within the concrete, one that was a worst-case scenario where extreme pitting and corrosion were initiated, and one that had chlorides present and received the ECR treatment. Cyclic polarization curves showed that the ECR and reference without chlorides had similar …
Rational Design Of Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs)-Based Functional Materials Towards Better Air Quality, Zan Zhu
Theses and Dissertations
Air pollution is a major threat to environmental safety and public health. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and airborne microorganisms are three typical air pollutants. Conventional strategies to prevent and mitigate air pollution have been employed, which, however, are generally passive. For instance, VOC sensing through solid-state devices is a conventional approach, which, however, is not capable of capturing and removing VOCs. On the other hand, air filters and face masks are useful equipment to protect people from inhaling PM and airborne microorganisms. But most commercial filters can only capture them on the surfaces, which may cause secondary …

Effects Of Additive Manufacturing Techniques On The Magnetocaloric Properties And Chemical Stability Of Lafexcoysi13-X-Y Alloys, Binyam Wodajo
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) is an emerging process to fabricate net shape, intricate, engineering components with minimal material waste; however, traditionally it has been largely applied to structural materials. AM of functional materials, such as magnetic materials, has received much less attention and the field is still in its infancy. To date, AM of magnetocaloric regenerators for magnetic refrigeration (an energy-efficient alternative to the conventional vapor-compression cooling technology), remains a challenge. There are several magnetic refrigerator device designs in existence today that are predicted to be highly energy-efficient, on condition that suitable working materials can be developed. This challenge in manufacturing …

Effect Of Thiosulfate On The Passivation Of Zinc-Alloyed Anodes, (Z32120 And Z13000) At 80°C After 288h Immersion In 3.5% Nacl Solution, Thwelt Thinzar Zaw
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this research, the inhibition of passivation on Zn alloys (Z32120 with Al) and Z13000 without Al) in artificial seawater (3.5% NaCl) mixing with different thiosulfate concentrations (100ppm, 150ppm, 200ppm) were investigated electrochemically after 288h immersion at 80°C and compared the results with that of testing without thiosulfate in the environment. According to the Potentiodynamic polarization test results, it is found that the presence of thiosulfate (S2O32-) in the solution hinders the passivation that was formed during the immersion of Zn alloys between 120h and 288h at 80°C in the absence of thiosulfate. Thiosulfate effect promotes Cl- penetration for not …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Although the past twenty years have seen dramatic advancement in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), these batteries are nearing their theoretical limit. Next generation energy storage technologies must therefore be developed to meet the ever-increasing demands for batteries with higher capacity, longer cycle lifetime, and increased safety. All-solid-state lithium battery (ASSLIB) technology is one of the promising candidates. It is equipped with a solid-state electrolyte (SSE) replacing the flammable organic liquid electrolyte used in current LIBs. The SSE's high modulus is expected to prevent lithium dendrites and enables the use of a lithium metal anode to contribute to its high capacity without …

An Approach For Material Model Identification Of A Composite Coating Using Micro-Indentation And Multi-Scale Simulations, Pouya Shojaei, Riccardo Scazzosi, Mohamed Trabia, Brendan O’Toole, Marco Giglio, Xing Zhang, Yiliang Liao, Andrea Manes
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
While deposited thin film coatings can help enhance surface characteristics such as hardness and friction, their effective incorporation in product design is restricted by the limited understand-ing of their mechanical behavior. To address this, an approach combining micro-indentation and meso/micro-scale simulations was proposed. In this approach, micro-indentation testing was conducted on both the coating and the substrate. A meso-scale uniaxial compression finite element model was developed to obtain a material model of the coating. This material model was incorporated within an axisymmetric micro-scale model of the coating to simulate the indentation. The proposed approach was applied to a Ti/SiC metal …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a clean and efficient energy conversion device. The development of intermediate-temperature SOFCs has made it preferable to use metallic interconnects (MICs) to greatly reduce the cost and significantly increase the efficiency compared to ceramic interconnect materials. However, gaseous chromium species will evaporate from the chromium-containing layer formed on the surface of commonly used MICs and balance of plant (BoP) components. Volatile chromium species have been shown to form solid deposits which poison the cathodes of SOFCs, causing drastic cell performance degradation and thereby limiting commercialization. In order to alleviate the Cr poisoning and …

Calcite Depression In Bastnaesite-Calcite Flotation System Using Organic Acids, Emmy Muhoza
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Bastnaesite is the primary source of light REEs, namely cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), to name a few. Bastnaesite is typically concentrated using the froth flotation beneficiation method. Flotation of bastnaesite suffers from high reagent consumption due to the similar surface characteristics of bastnaesite and associated gangue minerals, including calcite. Additionally, complex stages of high-temperature conditioning are often required to suppress the detrimental impact of dissolved calcium ions on the flotation of bastnaesite. This research seeks to investigate the capabilities of organic acids in the bastnaesite-calcite flotation systems to selectively depress calcite minerals and effectively chelate calcium …

Most of the energy lost during the conversion process comes in the form of waste heat. The world's energy consumption loses over 60% of its energy after conversion. In order to increase the efficiency of the conversion process, it is essential to harness waste heat and reutilize this energy resource. Heat recovery technology as thermoelectric (TE) technology is one of the growing alternatives to harvest excessive amounts of energy lost as waste heat for a more efficient, safe, and sustainable future. Due to the Seebeck effect, TE materials have the potential to convert waste heat directly into electricity, improving efficiency …
