Characterization And Tailoring Of Powder Used In Additive Manufacturing And Plasma Spheroidization, Caitlin S. Kriewall

Masters Theses

"There are many processes that use metal powder as the starting material for the production of parts. With the growth of these manufacturing techniques, more critical part applications are being considered. In order to fully understand the process and create consistent parts, powder properties need to be well understood. Selective laser melting (SLM) is a powder bed-based additive manufacturing process. During processing, heat-affected powders are generated and can deposit within the build area. The current work investigated the characterization of heat-affected 304L stainless steel powder using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to detect …

Microstructural Development And Its Effect On Aqueous Corrosion Of A Borosilicate Glass Ceramic For Waste Vitrification, Nicholas Stephen Roberts

Masters Theses

"Waste loadings of reprocessed spent nuclear fuel vitrified into borosilicate glass can be increased by precipitating environmentally stable phases concentrated with waste components in a chemically stable glass matrix. The principal objective of this thesis was to characterize the development of crystalline powellite (CaMoO4 and related phases) and oxyapatite (Ca2LN8Si6O26) in borosilicate glass-ceramics and to determine how the formation of those phases affected its chemical durability.

Borosilicate glasses provided by PNNL were re-melted and quenched at rates from over 300⁰C/s to ~0.05⁰C/s. Isothermal heat treatment experiments were conducted by quenching melts …

Masters Theses

"This thesis outlines the development of a system used for determining the surface thermal diffusivity of both non-irradiated and irradiated materials. The motivation for this work is to establish a modulated photothermal radiometry (PTR) system on the campus of Missouri University of Science and Technology. One of the main efforts described in this thesis is the design and construction of the physical apparatus. Along the way, it was necessary to perform a detailed sensitivity analysis of the system to determine whether the expected signal emitted from the sample falls within the bounds of detectivity for the HgCdTe (MCT) detector used …

Measurement Of Planar Fault Probabilities In Austempered Ductile Iron And 304l Stainless Steel, Nathan Peterson Jan 2018

Measurement Of Planar Fault Probabilities In Austempered Ductile Iron And 304l Stainless Steel, Nathan Peterson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

During plastic deformation both stacking and twin faults can be generated in face-centered cubic materials, including iron-based metals that contain thermally stable austenite. These planar faults are a critical component of the austenite to martensite transformation, forming shear bands that can act as nucleation sites. The measurement of these faults via x-ray diffraction has been long established, however it has not been applied widely to austempered ductile irons. The ability to measure these faulting probabilities could give insights into the transformation as a function of deformation. In this work both planar fault densities were measured in austempered ductile iron to …

Effect Of Hierarchical Structure And Orientation On Water-Repellent Legs Of Water-Walking Insects, Georgia Hurchalla Jan 2018

Effect Of Hierarchical Structure And Orientation On Water-Repellent Legs Of Water-Walking Insects, Georgia Hurchalla

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Some insects have the ability to walk on water surface due to hierarchical leg structure and wax coating. This work presents studies of water strider and fire ant leg immersion force profiles to measure resistance of legs to submersion and show orientation effects. A high-sensitivity microbalance measured force during immersion of insect legs at various angles into water droplets. Legs oriented parallel to water surface could support three to five times as much force before immersion, compared to legs in a perpendicular orientation. Water pressure affects the setae structure differently at parallel and perpendicular approaches, and complete wetting is more …

Effects And Limitations Of Residual Alloying Elements In Silicon Solid Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron, Julia Scruton Jan 2018

Effects And Limitations Of Residual Alloying Elements In Silicon Solid Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron, Julia Scruton

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Transitioning from traditional grades of ductile iron to solution strengthened ferritic ductile iron (SSFDI) grades can be difficult because of the need to reduce the amount of pearlite promoting elements, particularly copper and manganese, which are used in traditional grades. Knowing the acceptable threshold of residual alloying elements will allow for more cost-effective tailoring of the charge stream. Data were generated from a series of casting trials with the target grade of EN-GJS-500-14 where the levels of copper and manganese were varied from 0.05% to 0.3% and 0.15% to 0.4% respectively while maintaining silicon in the 3.8%-4.3% range. The pearlite …

Enhanced Hot Electron Lifetimes In Quantum Wells With Inhibited Phonon Coupling, Hamidreza Esmaielpour, Vincent R. Whiteside, Herath P. Piyathilaka, Sangeetha Vijeyaragunathan, Bin Wang, Echo Adcock-Smith, Kenneth P. Roberts, Tetsuya D. Mishima, Michael B. Santos, Alan D. Bristow, Ian R. Sellers

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Hot electrons established by the absorption of high-energy photons typically thermalize on a picosecond time scale in a semiconductor, dissipating energy via various phonon-mediated relaxation pathways. Here it is shown that a strong hot carrier distribution can be produced using a type-II quantum well structure. In such systems it is shown that the dominant hot carrier thermalization process is limited by the radiative recombination lifetime of electrons with reduced wavefunction overlap with holes. It is proposed that the subsequent reabsorption of acoustic and optical phonons is facilitated by a mismatch in phonon dispersions at the InAs-AlAsSb interface and serves to …

Induced Ferromagnetism In Multilayered Graphene In Proximity With Cofe2o4, Himanshu Verma, Dereje Seifu, Shashi P. Karna, Haiping Hong, Mohindar S. Seehra

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Composites of anisotropic diamagnetic multilayer Graphene (MLG) and ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 (CFO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized through a one-step sonication process in the presence of a surfactant. The samples were characterized at ambi- ent using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetometry (vibrating sample magnetometer). An induced ferromagnetism was observed in MLG with saturation magnetization MS = 18 emu/g(MLG). This induced ferromagnetism is attributed to ferrimagnetic CFO uniformly distributed on the surface of diamagnetic MLG. SEM images confirm uniform dense distribu- tion of CFO nanoparticles on MLG. MFM images …

Implementation Of Magnesium Alloy Az91d On Wire And Arc Additive Manufacturing, David Adrian Martinez Holguin Jan 2018

Implementation Of Magnesium Alloy Az91d On Wire And Arc Additive Manufacturing, David Adrian Martinez Holguin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As progress on Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques focusing on ceramics and polymers evolve, metals continue to be a challenging material to manipulate when fabricating products. Current methods, such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) and Electron Beam Melting (EBM) face many intrinsic limitations due to the nature of their processes. Material selection, elevated cost and low deposition rates are some of the barriers to consider when one of these methods is to be used for the fabrication of engineering products. The research here presented demonstrates the use of a Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) system for the creation of metallic …

Effect Of Curing Rate On The Microstructure And Macroscopic Properties Of Epoxy Fiberglass Composites, Ammar Patel, Olesksandr Kravchenko, Ica Manas-Zloczower Jan 2018

Effect Of Curing Rate On The Microstructure And Macroscopic Properties Of Epoxy Fiberglass Composites, Ammar Patel, Olesksandr Kravchenko, Ica Manas-Zloczower

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Curing rates of an epoxy amine system were varied via different curing cycles, and glass-fiber epoxy composites were prepared using the same protocol, with the aim of investigating the correlation between microstructure and composite properties. It was found that the fast curing cycle resulted in a non-homogenous network, with a larger percentage of a softer phase. Homogenized composite properties, namely storage modulus and quasi-static intra-laminar shear strength, remained unaffected by the change in resin microstructure. However, fatigue tests revealed a significant reduction in fatigue life for composites cured at fast curing rates, while composites with curing cycles that allowed a …

Data Driven Composites: The Challenge And Paths Forwards, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

The concept of “data driven” grew out of the general subject of data analytics, especially in the business world. The classical sequence proposed by Dykes (2010) shown below illustrates the general contents of the concept. Indeed, the idea of “predictive modeling” of the future behavior of a system has strong roots in the business community. In general, for engineering and other fields, the data driven challenge is to use the past with information from the present to predict the future behavior of a system. In turn, the user must pay for collection and processing, hosting and maintenance of the data, …

State Variable Methods Of Assessment, Prognosis, And Control Of Composite And Bonded Structures, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

It is generally recognized that the determination of material state is the baseline foundation for the assessment and prognosis of current and future performance of structural materials in which distributed damage leads to progressive property degradation. Many classes of composite materials, both naturally occurring and engineering designs, are governed by such behavior. However, finding appropriate measureable physical variables to make such assessments, especially for as-manufactured and subsequent real-time assessment and prognosis conditions is challenging. Measurement and analysis of multiple single defect initiation, interaction, and collective effects is the most rigorous current methodology, and is the foundation for certification and quality …

Global Prediction Of Discrete Local Damage Interactions Using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Rauhon Ahmed Shaik, Aishwarya Nandini, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

With the increasing demand for composites in many modern applications, it is important to predict the initiation of failure events. Due to the heterogeneous nature of these materials, a single damage mode will not lead to final failure, hence detecting the initiation and growth of a single crack (defect) will not yield accurate predictions of the strength or the material state. It is important to capture the interaction of various damage modes that tend to change the material state leading to initiation of failure. To assess the material state, one needs to determine the appropriate global physical variables that can …

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

The thermoset epoxy resin Diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol F (EPON 862), crosslinked with the Diethylene Toluene Diamine (DETDA) hardening agent, are utilized as the polymer matrix component in many graphite (carbon fiber) composites. Since it is difficult to experimentally characterize the interfacial region, computational molecular modeling is a necessary tool for understanding the influence of the interfacial molecular structure on bulk-level material properties. The purpose of this research is to evaluate and compare the interfacial shear stress and dipole moment for the pristine carbon fiber composite and the one with the moisture content at the interface. Molecular models are established …

Development And Characterization Of Novel Materials For The Advancement Of Additive Manufacturing By Material Extrusion 3d Printing, Jose Gilberto Siqueiros

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The development of additive manufacturing technologies has been under the spotlight from the past decade due to its enormous potential to disrupt current manufacturing processes. Material extrusion 3D printing (ME3DP) is the most common type of additive manufacturing technology as it experienced an exponential growth after the expiration of the fused deposition modeling patent filed in 1989 by Scott Crump. The large interest behind this technology is generated from the capacity to create complex shapes, rapid prototyping, relatively ease of use, low cost, and high accessibility. The gradual evolution of material extrusion 3D printing calls to become a technology ordinarily …

Hafnium oxide, or hafnia, is a high temperature refractory material with good electrical, chemical, optical, and thermodynamic properties. The effects of dopants have been widely studied, especially after the discovery of ferroelectricity induced in hafnia thin films. While attractive and used in the opto-electronic, memory devices, and semiconductor industries, there is a lack in the literature on enhancing the mechanical properties of hafnium oxide, specifically through doping it with tungsten, another material of interest particularly for future high temperature device applications. Thus, this work aimed to grow hafnia thin films doped with varying amounts of tungsten. The samples were grown …

Heterogeneous Integration Of Metallic, Semiconducting And Dielectric Two-Dimensional Layered Material Inks For Electronics And Sensing Device Platforms, Jay Amrish Desai Jan 2018

Heterogeneous Integration Of Metallic, Semiconducting And Dielectric Two-Dimensional Layered Material Inks For Electronics And Sensing Device Platforms, Jay Amrish Desai

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In monolayers of two-dimensional (2-D) layered materials, the motion of electrons is confined to a 2-D plane yielding a "zero" effective thickness with regard to the electrons. These monolayers are commonly obtained by exfoliating membranes from the bulk crystal to overcome the weak interplanar Van der Waals bonding using the so-called top-down approach. The bottom-up approach is another avenue to realize these materials, where atoms and molecules coalesce together into increasingly larger assemblies for the realization of the bulk three-dimensional (3-D) crystal. The unique properties of many of these 2-D materials make them highly sought out candidates for advancing conventional …

A New Approach To Multiplanar, Real-Time Simulation Of Physiological Knee Loads And Synthetic Knee Components Augmented By Local Composition Control In Fused Filament Fabrication, Joshua Taylor Green

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Despite numerous advances in biomedical engineering, few developments in surgical simulation have been made outside of computational models. Cadavers remain the primary media on which surgical research and simulation is conducted. Most attempts to quantify the effects of orthopedic surgical methods fail to achieve statistical significance due to limited quantities of cadaver specimen, large variations among the cadaver population, and a lack of repeatability among measurement techniques. The general purpose of the research covered in this dissertation is to develop repeatable simulation of physiological loads and develop techniques to fabricate a synthetic-based replacement of cadaver specimens. Future work applying this …

Direct Strength Approach To Predict The Flexural Strength Of Cold-Formed Z-Section Purlins On Sloped Roofs, Ali Parva, Michael W. Seek

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

In this study, the strength of cold-formed Z-section purlins is predicted considering the effects of roof slope in real roof systems. The study applies to simple span purlins with torsion restraints at support locations and at paired locations along the length of the member. A previously developed method has shown through comparisons to base tests that when the biaxial bending and torsion stresses are incorporated into the analysis, the Direct Strength Method can accurately predict the strength of a purlin. These stress distributions can deviate substantially from the constrained bending approximation typically assumed in analysis and therefore impacts the local …

The Influence Of Organic Pigments On Coating Properties, Sarah Medeiros

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to identify the qualities of two synthesized organic pigments added to a coating. These high-performance pigments were benzodipyrrolidone and benzodifuranone, which are π-conjugated monomers. These pigments were each formulated into two different pigment concentrations and compared with a control that had no pigment. This project is limited by time constraints and the number of variables that can be tested in that time. Performance testing was conducted to evaluate the qualities of these coatings. The results demonstrated that the coatings were reproducible and most tests had results that were equal to or exceeded the …
