Wettability Tailoring Of Nanotube Carpets: Morphology-Chemistry Synergy For Hydrophobic–Hydrophilic Cycling, Lymeng He, Anil Karumuri, Sharmila M. Mukhopadhyay

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Carpet-like arrays of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on graphitic carbon materials have been investigated in order to understand all-carbon hierarchical structures for multifunctional surface-active devices. Pure CNT carpets are seen to be super-hydrophobic as long as they are well aligned. For future applications involving aqueous environments, the ability to tailor the surface wettability and switch it on demand can be very useful, and enable unprecedented devices related to microfluidics, catalysis and sensing/detection systems. In this study, microwave plasma treatments were used to functionalize CNT carpets for a progressive increase in wettability so that they could eventually become super-hydrophilic. This change could …

Computer Simulation Of Pore Migration Due To Temperature Gradients In Nuclear Oxide Fuel, Ian Wayne Vance May 2017

Computer Simulation Of Pore Migration Due To Temperature Gradients In Nuclear Oxide Fuel, Ian Wayne Vance

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A phase-field simulation model is being presented that captures the thermal-gradient-driven migration of pores in oxide fuel associated with fuel restructuring. The model utilizes a Cahn-Hilliard equation supplemented with an advection term to describe the vapor transport of fuel material through the pore interior due to gradients in vapor pressure. In addition, the model also captures changes in a migrating pores’ morphology. Simulations demonstrate that the model successfully predicts pore migration towards the hottest portion of the fuel, the centerline. The simulations also demonstrate changes in pore shape that are in agreement with previous experimental observations. Initially isotropic pores are …

Ag Nano-Dendritic Three-Dimensional (3d) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Substrate For In-Situ Liquid Media Detection, Milind Mansing Pawar

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Continuous monitoring of certain environmental pollutants, biological species, chemical species, and explosives are of utmost importance in recent times. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides most promising option as it is a highly sensitive technique which allows for ultrasensitive detection of molecules and provides excellent structural information. To obtain rich results through Surface-enhanced Raman scattering, proper design of enhancing substrate plays vital role. Contemporary SERS substrates don’t provide ease to detect liquid analytes for in-situ spectroscopy. Liquid media detection through SERS relies on highly statistical binding of analytes to SERS-sensitive hot spots. Moreover, it becomes extremely difficult to detect flowing liquid …

Previous methods have characterized near wake vorticity of a single turbine as well as recovery distance for various turbine array configurations. This study aims to build from previous methods of analysis from the perspective of the rotor well within a turbine array and develop a model to examine points of significant imposition in relation to rotational effects. Hot wire anemometry was employed downstream of a turbine located in the middle of the third row in a …

Deposition Velocity Dependence On Urban Morphology, Rawand Muzafar Rasheed May 2017

Deposition Velocity Dependence On Urban Morphology, Rawand Muzafar Rasheed

Undergraduate Research & Mentoring Program

Understanding the interactions between the atmospheric boundary layer and urban structures provides insights into emerging problems such as green building design as well as dispersion and deposition of pollutants on urban structures. Characterization of deposition velocity dependence through the naphthalene sublimation method on model urban structures is conducted herein where the analogous fundamental transport mechanisms of momentum and mass transport is obtained via mass of naphthalene transferred. Via wind tunnel experiments, results show that deposition velocity of naphthalene from urban structures increases with increased number of urban structures ahead of the point of investigation. This is attributed to the wakes …

Infrared Energy Conversion In Plasmonic Fields At Two-Dimensional Semiconductors, Gregory Thomas Forcherio May 2017

Infrared Energy Conversion In Plasmonic Fields At Two-Dimensional Semiconductors, Gregory Thomas Forcherio

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Conversion of infrared energy within plasmonic fields at two-dimensional, semiconductive transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) through plasmonic hot electron transport and nonlinear frequency mixing has important implications in next-generation optoelectronics. Drude-Lorentz theory and approximate discrete dipole (DDA) solutions to Maxwell’s equations guided metal nanoantenna design towards strong infrared localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Excitation and damping dynamics of LSPR in heterostructures of noble metal nanoantennas and molybdenum- or tungsten-disulfide (MoS2; WS2) monolayers were examined by parallel synthesis of (i) DDA electrodynamic simulations and (ii) near-field electron energy loss (EELS) and far-field optical transmission UV-vis spectroscopic measurements. Susceptibility to second-order nonlinear frequency …

Synthesis Of Graphene Oxide Membranes And Their Behavior In Water And Isopropanol, Ashish Aher, Yuguang Cai, Mainak Majumder, Dibakar Bhattacharyya

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Graphene oxide (GO) membrane has been synthesized on commercial polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes (Pore size: 17 nm) using the drop casting method followed by baking at 90 C for 24 h. Baking resulted in the reduction of GO and removal of bulk water intercalated in the GO sheets. Deposited GO film showed high stability under shear stress variation. This work shows that water adsorption on the GO membrane determines its permeation performance. Despite the higher viscosity of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), its permeability was 7 times higher than water through the baked (“dry”) GO membranes, which were never contacted with water. However, …

Graphene is known to be a key material for improving the performance of hydrogen sensors. High electrical conductivity, maximum possible surface area with respect to volume, and high carrier mobility are a few of the properties that make graphene ideal for hydrogen sensing applications. The problem with utilizing graphene is the difficulty in depositing uniform, thin layers onto substrate surfaces. This study examines a new method of optimizing graphene deposition by utilizing an airbrush to deposit both graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) onto glass substrates. The number of depositions were varied among samples to study the effect …

An Investigation Of The Use Of Cerium And Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes For The Protection Of Polymeric Epoxy Compounds In The Low Earth Orbit Environment, Jessica Miriam Piness

Dissertations

Low Earth orbit presents many hazards for composites including atomic oxygen, UV radiation, thermal cycling, micrometeoroids, and high energy protons. Atomic oxygen and vacuum ultraviolet radiation are of concern for space-bound polymeric materials as they degrade the polymers used as matrices for carbon fiber composites, which are used in satellites and space vehicles due to their high strength to weight ratios. Epoxy-amine thermosets comprise a common class of matrix due to processability and good thermal attributes. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have shown the ability to reduce erosion in polyimides, polyurethanes, and other polymers when exposed to atomic oxygen. The POSS …

Design And Synthesis Of Polymer Brush Surfaces With Complex Molecular Architectures And Morphologies, Wei Guo

Dissertations

The combination of surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) and postpolymerization modification (PPM) is a powerful technique for the fabrication of functional soft surfaces. Better understanding the influence of the aforementioned factors on the PPM effectiveness is valuable for fulfilling the potential of the PPM approach for the fabrication of functional soft surfaces. Specifically, by carefully balancing modification reactivity and limitation of mass transport, polymer brush with composition heterogeneity and gradient along the normal direction of the surface otherwise unattainable by methods of direct polymerization can be fabricated via the PPM approach which opens doors to new routes to polymer brush with complex …

Effect Of Chain Rigidity On Network Architecture And Deformation Behavior Of Glassy Polymer Networks, Kyler Reser Knowles May 2017

Effect Of Chain Rigidity On Network Architecture And Deformation Behavior Of Glassy Polymer Networks, Kyler Reser Knowles

Dissertations

Processing carbon fiber composite laminates creates molecular-level strains in the thermoset matrix upon curing and cooling which can lead to failures such as geometry deformations, micro-cracking, and other issues. It is known strain creation is attributed to the significant volume and physical state changes undergone by the polymer matrix throughout the curing process, though storage and relaxation of cure-induced strains remain poorly understood. This dissertation establishes two approaches to address the issue. The first establishes testing methods to simultaneously measure key volumetric properties of a carbon fiber composite laminate and its polymer matrix. The second approach considers the rigidity of …

Polyisobutylene Telechelic Prepolymers By In Situ End-Quenching And Post-Polymerization Modifications, Bin Yang

Dissertations

This volume focuses on the development of telechelic polyisobutylene (PIB) prepolymers by combining end-capping of living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene (IB) with suitable reactants and post-polymerization modifications. Alkylation kinetics of PIB tert-chloride with alkoxybenzenes using either TiCl4 or AlCl3 were investigated. Quantitative para-position end-capped products were only achieved if the alkoxybenzene/AlCl3 molar ratio was greater than unity; while no such molar ratio is required for TiCl4, but the alkylation rate was slower than AlCl3 under the same conditions. Photopolymerization kinetics analysis of PIB triphenol tri(meth)acrylates with low and high Mns, …

Application Of Raman Spectroscopy To Study Of Biological Systems, Neva Agarwala

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Raman spectroscopy is an important tool of molecular characterization based on inelastic scattering of monochromatic light by molecules. Since Raman spectra reflect unique vibrational properties of materials, the method offers a potential of selective molecular identification. Furthermore, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) also is capable of a high sensitivity, since inelastic scattering of light from the molecules is strongly enhanced when Raman-active molecules are located close to roughened noble metal surfaces. In this thesis, Raman characterization protocols of liquid biological samples are optimized. Raman spectra of two different cell cultures, yeast cells and HeLa cells, were collected and interpreted. The potentiality …

Development Of Many-Body Potential For Deformation Study In Al-Tin Nanolayered Composites, Paul Yaohan Simanjuntak

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

A novel interatomic potential of ternary Al-Ti-N has been developed to study the deformation behavior of Al-TiN nanolaminates. The ternary nanolayered Al-TiN composite has attracted a lot of interest due to its combination of strength and ductility. The current analysis on the system has been primarily concentrated on continuum models which are inadequate to explain the key deformation events such as nucleation and interaction of dislocations. Progress in the preferred atomistic approach has been hampered however by the lack of available interatomic potential optimized for the ternary system. I developed a many-body potential based on embedded atomic model (EAM) by …

Oxide core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) have attracted considerable interest for their multifunctional properties. Luminescent ZnO, ferroelectric BaTiO3, and inverse spinel iron oxide can be exploited to develop magneto-luminescent and multiferroic nanomaterials. The novel sonochemical method has been used to synthesize the nanomaterials. Atomic-scale spectroscopy establishes the core-shell nature and multifunctional properties of the nanomaterials. Magnetic hysteresis (coercivity, remnant, and saturation magnetization) and temperature dependent data indicate the key structural difference between the oxidized and reduced ZnO/iron oxide CSNPs. Variation in the coercive field and remnant and saturation magnetization further confirms the presence of different iron oxides in the shell region. Temperature …

Re-Evaluation Of Acceptance Testing Criteria For Structural Masonry Using The Prism Test Method, James Bristow May 2017

Re-Evaluation Of Acceptance Testing Criteria For Structural Masonry Using The Prism Test Method, James Bristow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The current acceptance criteria for structural masonry in accordance with International Building Code allows for the prism test method to be used. However, without a proper understanding of the effects of variable material properties such as individual masonry unit compressive strength and the various material moduli of elasticity, as well as the effect of field conditions on the unit’s performance, masonry prisms may “fail” to reach the design compressive strength (f’m).

By identifying causes of failure and evaluating the failure magnitude, it is concluded that when the masonry prism test method is utilized for acceptance testing of as-built masonry structures, …

Near-Field Thermal Radiation For Solar Thermophotovoltaics And High Temperature Thermal Logic And Memory Applications, Mahmoud Elzouka

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation investigates Near-Field Thermal Radiation (NFTR) applied to MEMS-based concentrated solar thermophotovoltaics (STPV) energy conversion and thermal memory and logics. NFTR is the exchange of thermal radiation energy at nano/microscale; when separation between the hot and cold objects is less than dominant radiation wavelength (~1 μm). NFTR is particularly of interest to the above applications due to its high rate of energy transfer, exceeding the blackbody limit by orders of magnitude, and its strong dependence on separation gap size, surface nano/microstructure and material properties.

Concentrated STPV system converts solar radiation to electricity using heat as an intermediary through a …
