Quantification Of Volatile Residuals In Polydioxanone By Gas Chromatography: Method Development, Validation And Implementation, Clayton Joseph Culbreath
Quantification Of Volatile Residuals In Polydioxanone By Gas Chromatography: Method Development, Validation And Implementation, Clayton Joseph Culbreath
All Theses
Bioresorbable polymers are increasingly utilized for implantable medical devices to avoid complications related to explant and/or long term responses to foreign materials. As with all polymeric materials, residual levels of unreacted monomer, and other volatiles, drastically affect the mechanical and chemical properties as well as the parameters required to process the material into a device. The 1,4-dioxane-2-one (PDO) monomer is a six membered ring that forms an ether-ester polymer via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) with intermediate absorption rate properties that are ideal for numerous implant situations. Developing devices using poly(1,4-dioxane-2-one) (PPDO, PDO, PDX, PPDX, or PDS) is complicated by residual levels …
Role Of The Inner Shell Architecture On The Various Blinking States And Decay Dynamics Of Core-Shell And Core-Multishell Quantum Dots, Pooja Bajwa
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots, QDs) have received much attention in recent years due to their uniquely size-tunable properties leading to a number of promising applications. Some of their most popular applications include their use as fluorescent probes in biology, as electro-optical components and in photovoltaic devices. CdSe-based QDs are particularly important because of their ease of synthesis, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) across the whole visible spectrum and their photostabilty. Shelling of core QDs is usually carried out to improve their optical properties, minimize outer environmental effects on their properties, and avoid toxic element exposure to the environment. …

Fabrication Of Infrared Photodetectors Utilizing Lead Selenide Nanocrystals, Justin Anthony Hill
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal lead selenide and lead selenide / lead sulfide core/shell nanocrystals were grown using a wet chemical synthesis procedure. Absorbance and photoluminescence measurements were made to verify the quality of the produced nanocrystals. Absorbance spectra were measured at room temperature, while photoluminescence spectra were measured at 77 K. Organic ligands were exchanged for shorter ligands in order to increase the conductivity of the nanocrystals. Absorption and PL spectra for both core and core/shell nanocrystals were compared. Interdigital photodetector devices with varying channel widths were fabricated by depositing gold onto a glass substrate. Lead selenide nanocrystals were deposited onto these metallic …
The Effect Of Process Parameters And Surface Condition On Bond Strength Between Additively Manufactured Components And Polymer Substrates, Bharat Bhushan Chivukula
The Effect Of Process Parameters And Surface Condition On Bond Strength Between Additively Manufactured Components And Polymer Substrates, Bharat Bhushan Chivukula
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Additive patching is a process in which printers with multiple axes deposit molten material onto a pre-defined surface to form a bond. Studying the effect of surface roughness and process parameters selected for printing auxiliary part on the bond helps in improving the strength of the final component. Particularly, the influence of surface roughness, as established by adhesion theory, has not been evaluated in the framework of additive manufacturing (AM). A full factorial design of experiments with five replications was conducted on two levels and three factors, viz., layer thickness, surface roughness, and raster angle to examine the underlying effects …

Photoluminescence Studies Of Amorphous Boron Carbide And Tungsten Diselenide Thin Films, David M. Allendorfer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For many years scientists and engineers have been researching semi-conducting materials for use in a broad array of electronic devices. With the growing demand for faster, smaller and more efficient electronics, new materials must be characterized and their properties quantified. The focus of this thesis is to develop a system to measure photoluminescence in opto-electronic materials. Photoluminescence measurements are important because it can give researchers valuable information about a material’s band structure. This thesis begins by presenting the carrier recombination mechanisms and how they apply to photoluminescence. A system was developed to measure photoluminescence spectroscopy. This system was tested with …
Optimal Grading For Strength And Functionality Of Parts Made Of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks: Load Capacity Enhancement, Zhong Chen
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Uniform parts with stress concentrations or singularities are prone to failure under relatively small loads, which motivates researchers to seek methods to enhance the strength of these parts. This dissertation studies the optimization of material grading to design parts made of functionally graded interpenetrating polymer networks (FG-IPNs) to improve their load capacity.
An acrylate/epoxy IPN with variations of elastic Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and ultimate stress at failure is used for optimization of a plate with stress concentration. The grading is optimized by attaching the finite element method (FEM) solver to a general purpose bound-constrained optimizer. Two examples, a plate …

Focused-Based Multifractal Analysis Of The Wake In A Wind Turbine Array Utilizing Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Naseem Ali, Hawwa Falih Kadum, Raúl Bayoán Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Hot-wire anemometry measurements have been performed in a 3×3 wind turbine array to study the multifractality of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. A multifractal spectrum and Hurst exponents are determined at nine locations downstream of the hub height, bottom and top tips. Higher multifractality is found at 0.5D and 1D downstream of the bottom tip and hub height. The second order of the Hurst exponent and combination factor shows the ability to predict the flow state in terms of its development. Snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to identify the coherent and incoherent structures and to reconstruct the stochastic …
Large Scale Screening Of Low Cost Ferritic Steel Designs For Advanced Ultra Supercritical Boiler Using First Principles Methods, Lizhi Ouyang
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
Advanced Ultra Supercritical Boiler (AUSC) requires materials that can operate in corrosive environment at temperature and pressure as high as 760°C (or 1400°F) and 5000psi, respectively, while at the same time maintain good ductility at low temperature. We develop automated simulation software tools to enable fast large scale screening studies of candidate designs. While direct evaluation of creep rupture strength and ductility are currently not feasible, properties such as energy, elastic constants, surface energy, interface energy, and stack fault energy can be used to assess their relative ductility and creeping strength. We implemented software to automate the complex calculations to …
Loss-Induced Enhanced Transmission In Anisotropic Density-Near-Zero Acoustic Metamaterials, Chen Shen, Yun Jing
Loss-Induced Enhanced Transmission In Anisotropic Density-Near-Zero Acoustic Metamaterials, Chen Shen, Yun Jing
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Anisotropic density-near-zero (ADNZ) acoustic metamaterials are investigated theoretically and numerically in this paper and are shown to exhibit extraordinary transmission enhancement when material loss is induced. The enhanced transmission is due to the enhanced propagating and evanescent wave modes inside the ADNZ medium thanks to the interplay of near-zero density, material loss, and high wave impedance matching in the propagation direction. The equi-frequency contour (EFC) is used to reveal whether the propagating wave mode is allowed in ADNZ metamaterials. Numerical simulations based on plate-type acoustic metamaterials with different material losses were performed to demonstrate collimation and subwavelength imaging enabled by …
Development Of Metal Matrix Composite Gridlines For Space Photovoltaics, Omar K. Abudayyeh
Development Of Metal Matrix Composite Gridlines For Space Photovoltaics, Omar K. Abudayyeh
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Space vehicles today are primarily powered by multi-junction photovoltaic cells due to their high efficiency and high radiation hardness in the space environment. While multi-junction solar cells provide high efficiency, microcracks develop in the crystalline semiconductor due to a variety of reasons, including: growth defects, film stress due to lattice constant mismatch, and external mechanical stresses introduced during shipping, installation, and operation. These microcracks have the tendency to propagate through the different layers of the semiconductor reaching the metal gridlines of the cell, resulting in electrically isolated areas from the busbar region, ultimately lowering the power output of the cell …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
Single-crystal semiconductors have been at the forefront of scientific interest for more than 70 years, serving as the backbone of electronic devices. Inorganic single crystals are typically grown from a melt using time-consuming and energy-intensive processes. Organic semiconductor single crystals, however, can be grown using solution-based methods at room temperature in air, opening up the possibility of large-scale production of inexpensive electronics targeting applications ranging from field-effect transistors and light-emitting diodes to medical X-ray detectors. Here we demonstrate a low-cost, scalable spray-printing process to fabricate high-quality organic single crystals, based on various semiconducting small molecules on virtually any substrate by …

Extracting avalanche distributions from experimental microplasticity data can be hampered by limited time resolution. We compute the effects of low time resolution on avalanche size distributions and give quantitative criteria for diagnosing and circumventing problems associated with low time resolution. We show that traditional analysis of data obtained at low acquisition rates can lead to avalanche size distributions with incorrect power-law exponents or no power-law scaling at all. Furthermore, we demonstrate that it can lead to apparent data collapses with incorrect power-law and cutoff exponents. We propose new methods to analyze low-resolution stress-time series that can recover the size distribution …
Reduced Dimensionality Effects In Gd-Based Magnetocaloric Materials, Hillary Faith Belliveau
Reduced Dimensionality Effects In Gd-Based Magnetocaloric Materials, Hillary Faith Belliveau
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is a promising alternative to conventional gas compression based cooling techniques. Understanding impacts of reduced dimensionality on the magnetocaloric response of a material such as Gadolinium (Gd) or its alloys is essential in optimizing the performance of cooling devices, which is also the overall goal of this thesis. We have determined, in the first part of the thesis, that laminate structures of pure Gd produced by magnetron sputtering have several disadvantages. The target material (pure Gd), ultra-high vacuum components, and the electrical energy it takes to run the manufacturing process are all …

Finite Element Simulation Of Pzt-Aided Interrogation Of Composite Laminates Exhibiting Damage, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Centre for Advanced Materials
Piezoelectricity has proved effective in capturing changes in structures caused by various damage mechanisms. In one approach, piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are mounted on the surface of the host structure and utilized as both actuators and sensors to interrogate the structure and monitor its health. This is achieved by subjecting the PWAS to a transient electric pulse and reading the resulting voltage. Changes in the stiffness of the substrate due to structural damage affect the response of the PWAS, which could be correlated to integrity of the structure. Applying this technique to fibrous composite laminates encounters particular challenges due …

Composite Metallic Nanofoam Structures, David Bahr, Matthew Howard, Mohamad Zbib, Raheleh Rahimi, John Balk
Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)
Metallic nanofoams made of metals such as nickel (Ni) or gold (Au) with ligament sizes on the order of 10’s to 100’s of nm’s exhibit several remarkable properties as a consequence of their low relative density and high specific surface area, such as outstanding strength to weight ratios, enhanced plasmonic behavior and size-effect-enhanced catalytic behavior. However, these metallic nanofoams suffer from macroscopically brittle behavior due to plastic deformation in individual ligaments. With little or no barriers for slip, work-hardening is not possible within ligaments and extremely localized plasticity, once initiated, leads to a few ligaments necking and what appears to …

Characterization And Modeling To Design And Develop Tailored-Property Filled Glass Composites, Kevin Ewsuk
Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)
Particle-filled-glass composites (FGCs) are being developed as new materials with structure and properties engineered for materials joining (e.g., for solid oxide fuel cells). Relative to conventional sealing glasses used to make hermetic glass-to-metal (GtM) seals, FGCs with tailored properties offer significant potential as more crack resistant hermetic seals with better performance and reliability. Additionally, compared to process sensitive crystallizable glasses, FGCs offer broader processing latitude and robustness, and afford greater control of seal microstructure and properties. FGCs are being developed using a combination of fundamental materials science and materials engineering, employing: 1) experimentally-validated molecular modeling to better understand and control …

Powerful Artificial Muscles For Morphing Composites And Other Applications, Ray Baughman
Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)
Three successive generations of twist-spun artificial muscles are described and used to make morphing composites and textiles that are electrically, thermally, or chemically powered.1 Our first generation of twist-spun muscles, which are electrochemically powered by volume changes induced by double-layer charge injection, provide torsional rotation speeds of 590 rpm, and torsional strokes of 250° per millimeter of actuator length, which is 1000 times that for earlier artificial muscles. Our second generation muscles, which require no electrolyte and are based on guest-infiltrated carbon nanotube yarns, can torsionally actuate at 11,500 rpm and deliver 85 times higher power density during contraction …

Although theoretically the patent system is meant to bolster innovation, the current United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is cumbersome and involves a significant time investment to locate inactive patents less than 20 years old. This article reports on the development of an open source database to find these public domain ideas. First, a search strategy is explained. Then the operation and use of free and open source software are detailed to meet the needs of open hardware innovators. Finally, a case study is presented to demonstrate the utility of the approach with 3-D printing. The results showed how …

Deterministic Three-Dimensional Composite Structures For Energy Storage, Paul Brown
Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)
Through mesoscale design of a 3D current collector, high power density and high energy density primary and secondary (rechargeable) large format and microbatteries (Figure 1) were fabricated. At the most fundamental level, mesostructuring enables optimization of the trade-off between energy and power density in energy storage systems due to unavoidable ohmic and other losses that occur during charge or discharge. Of course, it is at fast charge and discharge, where these effects are most important. By efficient design of the ion and electron transport pathways, we and others have shown it is possible to significantly improve the power-energy relationship. We …

Experimental And Computational Study On Fracture Mechanics Of Multilayered Structures, Hai Thanh Tran
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many devices in electronics are in the form of multilayered structures. These structures can fail catastrophically if they contain defects or cracks. Enhancing their fracture properties is therefore critical to improve the reliability of the systems. The interface-dominated fracture mechanics of multilayered structure was studied using experiments and finite element (FE) modeling by considering two examples: thin films on polymer substrates in flexible electronics and Cu leadframe/epoxy molding compound (EMC) in micro-electronics packaging.
In the first example, aluminum-manganese (Al-Mn) thin films with Mn concentration up to 20.5 at.% were deposited on polyimide (PI) substrates. A variety of phases, including supersaturated …

C-3 Examination Of Anodized Aluminum For Surface Defects After Thermal Cycles, Boon-Chai Ng
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
A major cost in the fabrication of test sockets is the interposer, an interface layer that reroutes one connection to another. The interposer must have high resistivity with low loss, a smooth surface finish, high strength, resistance to chemicals involved in the process, and be extremely thin. Currently, the most common materials used for interposer are plastics, such as Torlon, Semitron, and PEEK. While these satisfy the requirements for test sockets, they do not perform well under higher ambient temperatures. Finding a less expensive, alternative material would be preferable.
In this study, anodized aluminum samples were subjected to repeat thermal …

Mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSNP) supported-lipid bilayers, termed ‘protocells,’ represent a potentially transformative class of therapeutic and theranostic delivery vehicles. The field of targeted drug delivery poses considerable challenges that cannot be addressed with a single ‘magic bullet’. Consequently, the protocell has been designed as a modular platform composed of interchangeable biocompatible components. The mesoporous silica core can have variable size and shape to direct biodistribution and controlled pore size and surface chemistry to accommodate diverse cargos. The encapsulating supported lipid bilayer can be modified with targeting and trafficking ligands as well as polyethylene glycol (PEG) to effect selective binding, endosomal …
Biomarker Detection At Risk Forecasting Level Using Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Combined With Surface Acoustic Wave, Jun Liu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) technique is used to lower the detection limit of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) which is able to be utilized in forecasting the risk of having certain kinds of cancers, especially colon and rectal cancer. By incubating silver nanocubes (Ag NCs) on the surface of the chips, the detection limit goes down to below 1ng/mL of CEA. Also, when combining MEF with surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, the incubation time between antigen and antibody will decrease significantly with the fluorescence signal keeping similar or higher level.
Molecular Tetrapods For Optoelectronic Applications, Jianzhong Yang
Molecular Tetrapods For Optoelectronic Applications, Jianzhong Yang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Most conjugated molecules including polymers and small molecules applied in organic solar cells (OSCs) have linear structures containing multiple aromatic groups connected in series. However, unfavorable film forming ability and grain boundaries both originated from high crystallinity of linear small molecules are detrimental to device performances. Thus, among multi-dimensional structures, tetrapodal molecules are especially interesting owing to their unique ability to mutually interlock, which prevents dislodging and provides high structural stabilities. Such molecular design can also increase absorption cross-sections and provide more extensively percolating pathways for charge transport, making such molecular tetrapods promising in OSCs applications. In my dissertation, I …

Water-Soluble Glass Substrate As A Platform For Biodegradable Solid-State Devices, Shihab Md Adnan, Kwangman Lee, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Matthew O'Keefe, D. E. Day, Chang-Soo Kim
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A biodegradable glass material is utilized as a novel functional element of solid-state devices. A water-soluble borate glass substrate serves as the structural platform on which thin film device is built. The glass substrate completely dissolves in a saline solution in approximately 40 h. Intentional failure of the spiral device (RLC resonator circuit) as a result of rapid structural disintegration by dissolution is demonstrated in DC, AC, and RF ranges that agrees well with simulation. Adopting water-soluble glass elements is expected to be a viable approach to develop reliable all-inorganic biodegradable devices that are fully functional during an intended operational …
