Analysis Of Arm Movement Prediction By Using The Electroencephalography Signal, Reza Darmakusuma, Ary Setijadi Prihatmanto, Adi Indrayanto, Tati Latifah Mengko, Lidwina Ayu Andarini, Achmad Furqon Idrus

Makara Journal of Technology

Various technological approaches have been developed in order to help those people who are unfortunate enough to be afflicted with different types of paralysis which limit them in performing their daily life activities independently. One of the proposed technologies is the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The BCI system uses electroencephalography (EEG) which is generated by the subject’s mental activity as input, and converts it into commands. Some previous experiments have shown the capability of the BCI system to predict the movement intention before the actual movement is onset. Thus research has predicted the movement by discriminating between data in the “rest” …

Thin Film Studies Toward Improving The Performance Of Accelerator Electron Sources, Md Abdullah Al Mamun Apr 2016

Thin Film Studies Toward Improving The Performance Of Accelerator Electron Sources, Md Abdullah Al Mamun

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Future electron accelerators require DC high voltage photoguns to operate beyond the present state of the art to conduct new experiments that require ultra-bright electron beams with high average current and higher bunch charge. To meet these demands, the accelerators must demonstrate improvements in a number of photogun areas including vacuum, field emission elimination in high voltage electrodes, and photocathodes. This dissertation illustrates how these improvements can be achieved by the application of suitable thin-films to the photogun structure for producing ultra-bright electron beams.

This work is composed of three complementary studies. First, the outgassing rates of three nominally identical …

Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

Coal and coal combustion byproducts can have significant concentrations of lanthanides (rare earth elements). Rare earths are vital in the production of modern electronics and optics, among other uses. Enrichment in coals may have been a function of a number of processes, with contributions from volcanic ash falls being among the most significant mechanisms. In this paper, we discuss some of the important coal-based deposits in China and the US and critique classification systems used to evaluate the relative value of the rare earth concentrations and the distribution of the elements within the coals and coal combustion byproducts.

More Investigations In Capillary Fluidics Using A Drop Tower, Andrew Paul Wollman, Mark M. Weislogel, Brentley M. Wiles, Donald Pettit, Trevor Snyder

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A variety of contemplative demonstrations concerning intermediate-to-large length scale capillary fluidic phenomena were made possible by the brief weightless environment of a drop tower (Wollman and Weislogel in Exp Fluids 54(4):1, 2013). In that work, capillarity-driven flows leading to unique spontaneous droplet ejections, bubble ingestions, and multiphase flows were introduced and discussed. Such efforts are continued herein. The spontaneous droplet ejection phenomena (auto-ejection) is reviewed and demonstrated on earth as well as aboard the International Space Station. This technique is then applied to novel low-g droplet combustion where soot tube structures are created in the wakes of burning drops. …

The Impact Of Damage Accumulation On The Kinetics Of Network Strength Recovery For A Physical Polymer Gel Subjected To Shear Deformation, Travis Thornell, Krithika Subramaniam, Kendra Erk Mar 2016

The Impact Of Damage Accumulation On The Kinetics Of Network Strength Recovery For A Physical Polymer Gel Subjected To Shear Deformation, Travis Thornell, Krithika Subramaniam, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Shear rheophysical experiments were used to quantify the kinetics of strength recovery of model thermoreversible polymer gels that were fractured and ultimately sheared to different total magnitudes of strain (700 and 4000%) before resting for set periods of time. Relationships between the amount of strength recovered and the normalized ratio of resting times to characteristic relaxation times were developed. It was found that gels displayed fully healed networks within timescales that were 2-3 orders of magnitude greater than the gel’s characteristic relaxation time. Gels deformed to 700% applied strain either healed slower at lower gel concentrations as compared to experiments …

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study Of The Effect Of Rh Doping In Sr2Iro4, C. H. Sohn, Deok-Yong Cho, C. -T. Kuo, L. J. Sandilands, Tongfei Qi, Gang Cao, T. W. Noh Mar 2016

X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study Of The Effect Of Rh Doping In Sr2Iro4, C. H. Sohn, Deok-Yong Cho, C. -T. Kuo, L. J. Sandilands, Tongfei Qi, Gang Cao, T. W. Noh

Center for Advanced Materials Faculty Publications

We investigate the effect of Rh doping in Sr2IrO4 using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We observed appearance of new electron-addition states with increasing Rh concentration (x in Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4) in accordance with the concept of hole doping. The intensity of the hole-induced state is however weak, suggesting weakness of charge transfer (CT) effect and Mott insulating ground states. Also, Ir Jeff = 1/2 upper Hubbard band shifts to lower energy as x increases up to x = 0.23. Combined with optical spectroscopy, these results suggest a hybridisation-related mechanism, in …

Spin-Gapless Semiconductivity And Half Metallicity In Heusler Alloys, Bradley A. Staten, Pavel V. Lukashev

Research in the Capitol

In recent years, ever increasing interest in spin-based electronics (spintronics) has resulted in the search for a new class of materials that can provide a high degree of transport spin polarization. An ideal candidate would act like insulator for one spin channel and a conductor or semiconductor for the opposite spin channel (e.g. half metals (HM), spin gapless semiconductors (SGS)). In this work, we present results of our computational and theoretical study (Staten, et al., J. Appl. Phys. 117, 17D115 (2015)) of Heusler compounds with potential commercial applications in the field of spintronics. We show that naturally these materials are …

Closing A Synthetic Carbon Cycle: Carbon Dioxide Conversion To Carbon Monoxide For Liquid Fuels Synthesis, Yolanda Andreina Daza Mar 2016

Closing A Synthetic Carbon Cycle: Carbon Dioxide Conversion To Carbon Monoxide For Liquid Fuels Synthesis, Yolanda Andreina Daza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

CO2 global emissions exceed 30 Giga tonnes (Gt) per year, and the high atmospheric concentrations are detrimental to the environment. In spite of efforts to decrease emissions by sequestration (carbon capture and storage) and repurposing (use in fine chemicals synthesis and oil extraction), more than 98% of CO2 generated is released to the atmosphere. With emissions expected to increase, transforming CO2 to chemicals of high demand could be an alternative to decrease its atmospheric concentration. Transportation fuels represent 26% of the global energy consumption, making it an ideal end product that could match the scale of CO …

Hydrogen Effects On X80 Steel Mechanical Properties Measured By Tensile And Impact Testing, Xuan Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effect of hydrogen charging current density and tensile strain rate on the mechanical properties of X80 pipeline steel were investigated by slow strain rate test (SSRT), Charpy impact test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in this thesis. The results show that both the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of X80 steel were deteriorated significantly after charging with hydrogen. With a strain rate of 5 x 10-5 s-1, the relative tensile strength and plasticity loss of X80 steel had no significant change within the range of assumed hydrogen partial pressures at room temperature. At room …

Radiation Effects On An Active Ytterbium-Doped Fiber Laser, Adam C. Poulin Mar 2016

Radiation Effects On An Active Ytterbium-Doped Fiber Laser, Adam C. Poulin

Theses and Dissertations

This is the first published research focused on the impact of gamma and mixed gamma/neutron radiation on an actively lasing ytterbium-doped fiber laser. While the gain medium of the ytterbium-doped fiber laser was irradiated, the power was measured in-situ and the spectrum was recorded intermittently. Two radiation sources were used, a 60Co cell and a reactor. Three irradiation experiments were conducted per radiation source; pristine fibers were used for the first two experiments, and fibers from the second experiment were re-irradiated for the third experiment. The results indicate that as the total dose increased linearly with time, the laser …

Creep Of Hi-Nicalon™ S Ceramic Fiber Tows At 700°C In Air And In Silicic Acid-Saturated Steam, Matthew W. Piper

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft structural and engine components are subjected to elevated temperature and steam environments during operation. Turbine blades experience particularly harsh conditions that are approaching the operating temperature limits of current Nickel-based superalloys even with active cooling. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), which demonstrate high specific strength and specific stiffness and maintain these properties at elevated temperatures such that active cooling is not required, are prime candidates to replace superalloys as the materials for turbine blades. Ceramic matrix composites are composite materials that consist of a ceramic matrix with fiber reinforcement. This research investigated a silicon carbide (SiC) fiber, Hi-Nicalon™ S, which …

Cement Heat Of Hydration And Thermal Control, Ahmadreza Sedaghat Mar 2016

Cement Heat Of Hydration And Thermal Control, Ahmadreza Sedaghat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Heat of hydration is a property of Portland cement and a direct result of the chemical reaction between cement and water. The amount of heat released is dependent upon the cement mineralogical composition, curing temperature, water to cement ratio, and cement fineness. High temperature resulting from heat of hydration (thereon referred to as HOH) of cement can affect the hydration process, and consequently the kinetics of development of the mechanical properties of concrete. One of the main reasons triggering the interest in HOH of cement is its implication in thermal cracking of concrete. The high temperature gradient between the inner …

Given the demand for constantly scaling microelectronic devices to ever smaller dimensions, a SiO2 gate dielectric was substituted with a higher dielectric-constant material, Hf(Zr)O2, in order to minimize current leakage through dielectric thin film. However, upon interfacing with high dielectric constant (high-κ) dielectrics, the electron mobility in the conventional Si channel degrades due to Coulomb scattering, surface-roughness scattering, remote-phonon scattering, and dielectric-charge trapping. III-V and Ge are two promising candidates with superior mobility over Si. Nevertheless, Hf(Zr)O2/III-V(Ge) has much more complicated interface bonding than Si-based interfaces. Successful fabrication of a high-quality device critically depends on understanding and engineering the bonding …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Graphene-based membranes demonstrating ultrafast water transport, precise molecular sieving of gas and solvated molecules shows great promise as novel separation platforms; however, scale-up of these membranes to large-areas remains an unresolved problem. Here we demonstrate that the discotic nematic phase of graphene oxide (GO) can be shear aligned to form highly ordered, continuous, thin films of multi-layered GO on a support membrane by an industrially adaptable method to produce large-area membranes (13 × 14 cm2) in < 5 s. Pressure driven transport data demonstrate high retention (> 90%) for charged and uncharged organic probe molecules with a hydrated radius above 5 Å as well as modest (30–40%) retention of …

Biopolymeric Mucin And Synthetic Polymer Analogs: Their Structure, Function And Role In Biomedical Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam, Thomas D. Dziubla

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Mucin networks are viscoelastic fibrillar aggregates formed through the complex self-association of biopolymeric glycoprotein chains. The networks form a lubricious, hydrated protective shield along epithelial regions within the human body. The critical role played by mucin networks in impacting the transport properties of biofunctional molecules (e.g., biogenic molecules, probes, nanoparticles), and its effect on bioavailability are well described in the literature. An alternate perspective is provided in this paper, presenting mucin’s complex network structure, and its interdependent functional characteristics in human physiology. We highlight the recent advances that were achieved through the use of mucin in diverse areas of bioengineering …

Characterization Of Superabsorbent Poly(Sodium-Acrylate Acrylamide) Hydrogels And Infuence Of Chemical Structure On Internally Cured Mortar, Matthew J. Krafcik, Kendra Erk Mar 2016

Characterization Of Superabsorbent Poly(Sodium-Acrylate Acrylamide) Hydrogels And Infuence Of Chemical Structure On Internally Cured Mortar, Matthew J. Krafcik, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Internal curing of mortar through superabsorbent polymer hydrogels is explored as a solution to self-desiccation. Four different hydrogels of poly(sodium-acrylate acry- lamide) are synthesized and the impact of chemical composition on mortar is assessed with relative humidity and autogenous shrinkage testing. The hydrogels are characterized with swelling tests in different salt solutions and compression tests. Chemical composition af- fected both swelling kinetics and gel network size. Mortar containing these hydrogels had increased relative humidity and markedly reduced autogenous shrinkage. Additionally, the chemical structure of the hydrogels was found to signifcantly impact the mortar’s shrink- age. Hydrogels that quickly released most …

While several scaffolds have been proposed for skeletal muscle regeneration, multiscale hierarchical scaffolds with the complexity of extracellular matrix (ECM) haven’t been engineered successfully. By precise control over nano- and microscale features, comprehensive understanding of the effect of multiple factors on skeletal muscle regeneration can be derived. In this study, we engineered carbon-based scaffolds with hierarchical nano- and microscale architecture with controlled physico-chemical properties. More specifically, we built multiscale hierarchy by growing carbon nanotube (CNT) carpets on two types of scaffolds, namely, interconnected microporous carbon foams and aligned carbon fiber mats. Nanostructured CNT carpets offered fine control over nano-roughness and …

Bond–Slip Behavior Of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer/Concrete Interface In Single Shear Pull-Out And Beam Tests, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan, Kent A. Harries Mar 2016

Bond–Slip Behavior Of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer/Concrete Interface In Single Shear Pull-Out And Beam Tests, Tayyebeh Mohammadi, Baolin Wan, Kent A. Harries

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

It has been assumed that the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface is subjected to in-plane shear condition when intermediate crack debonding failure occurs. Therefore, the single shear pull-out test results are often used to predict the intermediate crack debonding failure in beams. In this study, the behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer-strengthened concrete beams and single shear pull-out specimens were studied experimentally and numerically. The bond–slip behavior of the fiber-reinforced polymer/concrete interface was obtained by single shear pull-out and beam tests. In all beam specimens, a concrete wedge located at the edge of the notch detached with the fiber-reinforced polymer debonding failure. This phenomenon …

effective and physically meaningful analytical predictive model is developed for the evaluation the lattice-misfit stresses (LMS) in a semiconductor film grown on a circular substrate (wafer). The two-dimensional (plane-stress) theory-of-elasticity approximation (TEA) is employed in the analysis. The addressed stresses include the interfacial shearing stress, responsible for the occurrence and growth of dislocations, as well as for possible delaminations and the cohesive strength of a buffering material, if any. Normal radial and circumferential (tangential) stresses acting in the film cross-sections and responsible for its short- and long-term strength (fracture toughness) are also addressed. The analysis is geared to the GaN …

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Microstructural Alterations In Bearing Steel In Rolling Contact Fatigue, Sina Mobasher Moghaddam Mar 2016

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Microstructural Alterations In Bearing Steel In Rolling Contact Fatigue, Sina Mobasher Moghaddam

Open Access Dissertations

Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) is one the most common failure modes in bearings. RCF is usually associated with particular microstructural alterations. Such alterations (i.e. white etching cracks, butterflies, etc.) which lead to RCF failure are known to be among the most concerning matters to bearing industry.

In the current work, an analytical as well as experimental approaches are used to investigate “butterfly wing” formation, crack initiation and propagation from inclusions. A new damage evolution equation coupled with a FE model is employed to account for the effect of mean stresses and alternating stresses simultaneously to investigate butterfly formation. The proposed …
