Manganese titanate (MnTiO3) powder was prepared via a sol-gel method using manganese acetate and tetrabutyl titanate as raw materials, and citric acid as a chelating agent. Through high temperature nitridation of MnTiO3 powder in ammonia, the MnO/TiN composite was obtained. The phase structure, composition and morphology of the composites were characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. The electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes were studied by performing cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge and discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The Ni/Ag2O/RuO2-Pt composite cathode was prepared by sol-gel method using RuCl3 and H2PtCl6 as raw materials. The effects of heat treatment conditions and AgNO3 concentrations on hydrogen evolution properties were investigated. The morphology and composition of Ni/Ag2O/RuO2-Pt composite cathode have been characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM-EDS. It is demonstrated that the surface structure of Ni/Ag2O/RuO2-Pt composite cathode is more compact, with fewer cracks and larger surface roughness than pure nickel. In this paper, the effects of overcharge, charge-discharge C rate and pore size on cycle lifetime of 4.5’ electrochemical impregnated nickel electrode were investigated. In the case of the electrode was overcharged to 170% of nominal capacity, the initial capacity of the electrode could be maintained 2.7 Ah up to 150 cycles without deterioration and a discharge capacity of 1.7 Ah (remaining 63% of 2.7 Ah) could be delivered after 300 cycles. Without overcharge, more than 300 charge-discharge cycles could be realized without loss of capacity and a discharge capacity of electrode could be maintained about 76% of initial capacity …

In this work, the LiFePO4/C composites were prepared by the spray drying and carbothermal method, and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The effects of the organic assisted templates on the morphologies and electrochemical properties of the LiFePO4/C composites were investigated. A new concept of seawater battery with electrochemical capacitance (SWB-EC) has been proposed using carbon fibre brush (CFB) as the cathode material, and three testing prototypes have been made accordingly. The discharge performances of the CFB before- and after-oxidation and Mg alloy sacrifice anode were studied by cyclic voltammetry and constant current discharge tests under steady state conditions. Results show that the oxidized CFB exhibits the pseudo-capacitive characteristic and its activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in stirred seawater highly increases, comparing with the non-oxidized CFB. The citric acid modified glassy carbon electrode (CA/GC) was constructed by potentiostatic technique and used for simultaneous determinations of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The CA/GC electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards AA, DA and UA. The oxidation peaks are well separated with the potential differences between AA and DA, DA and UA, and AA and UA being 170, 130 and 300 mV, respectively, which is large enough to determine AA, DA and UA simultaneously. A microfluidic reactor for synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) was synthesized out of a silicon wafer and Pyrex glass. Microfabrication techniques were used to etch channels into the silicon wafer. Holes were wet-drilled into the Pyrex glass using a diamond-tip drill bit. The Pyrex wafer was anodically bonded to the etched silicon wafer to enclose the microfluidic reactor. Conditions for anodic bonding were created by exposing the stacked substrates to 300V at ~350oC under 5.46N of force. Initial results have been recently reported that suggest a potential correlation exists between the full-width-halfmaximum (FWHM) of the Y(3d) peak obtained by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the critical current density a YBa2Cu3O7-x film can carry. In particular, the Y(3d5/2) demonstrated a stronger correlation. Transport currents were determined by the 4-point contact method using the 1μV/cm criterion. An apparent correlation was also suggested between the Y(3d) FWHM and ac loss data points were acquired to further test the usefulness of the correlations. The antiferrodistortive (AFD) structural transitions of calcium titanate (CaTiO3) at ambient pressure have been extensively studied during the last few years. It has been found that none of the AFD polymorphs is polar or ferroelectric. However, it was recently shown theoretically and later experimentally confirmed that a ferroelectric transition in CaTiO3 can be induced by tensile strains. The ferroelectric instability is believed to be strongly coupled to the AFD soft modes. In order to more effectively monitor the health of composite structures, a fuzzy fiber sensor has been developed. The fuzzy fiber is a bundle of glass fibers with carbon nanotubes or nanofibers (CNTs or CNFs) grown on the surface. The nanotube coating makes the fiber bundle conductive while the small conductive path increases sensitivity. The fuzzy fiber sensor can replace conventional metal foil strain gauges in composite applications. The electrical response of the sensor is monitored in real time to measure strain, vibration, cracking and delamination. Continuous monitoring provides instant notification of any problems. We apply generalized ellipsometry, well-known to be sensitive to the optical properties of anisotropic materials, to determine the amount of fibronectin protein that adsorbs onto a Ti slanted columnar thin film from solution. We find that the anisotropic optical properties of the thin film change upon organic adsorption. An optical model for ellipsometry data analysis incorporates an anisotropic Bruggeman effective medium approximation. We find that differences in experimental data from before and after fibronectin adsorption can be solely attributable to the uptake of fibronectin within the slanted columnar thin film. The fatigue crack propagation (FCP) as well as the sustained loading crack growth (SLCG) behavior of two solid-solution-strengthened Ni-based superalloys, INCONEL 617 (Special Metals Corporation Family of Companies) and HAYNES 230 (Haynes International, Inc., Kokomo, IN), were studied at increased temperatures in laboratory air under a constant stress-intensity- factor (K) condition. The crack propagation tests were conducted using a baseline cyclic triangular waveform with a frequency of 1 3 Hz. Holographic methods show much promise to enable direct determination of atomic structure with minimal assumptions and approximations. The approach can, in principle, provide three dimensional information on atomic positions. However, significant developments in experimental techniques, instrumentation and in data collection and analysis are needed. A review of the holography method is given with a focus on X-ray fluorescence holography. Methods for analysis of X-ray holographic data are also reviewed. Three types of self-assembled carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets, for example, carboxylic functionalized multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs-COOH), pure multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs), and pure single-walled CNTs (SWNTs), were prepared as substrates by ambient environment vacuum filtration of suspensions of the nanotubes. To enhance hydrogen storage on the CNTs, platinum particles were deposited on the three types of CNT sheets using two processes: electrodeposition (ED) using a DC power source and electrochemical deposition under cyclic voltammetry (CV). A method of sintering a ZrB2-SiC composite body at ambient pressures, including blending a first predetermined amount of ZrB2 powder with a second predetermined amount of SiC powder, wherein both powders are characterized by the presence of surface oxide impurities. Next the blended powders are mixed to yield a substantially homogeneous powder mixture and a portion of the substantially homogeneous powder mixture is formed into a green body. This report presents the findings of scoping study into the potential application of hemp lime biocomposite as a construction material in Irish context. The research was carried out under STRIVE funding administered under the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) examining the state of play of hemp lime in construction toward assessing its potential application in Ireland.

This thesis is composed of three life-cycle analysis (LCA) studies of manufacturing to determine cumulative energy demand (CED) and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The methods proposed could reduce the environmental impact by reducing the CED in three manufacturing processes.

First, industrial symbiosis is proposed and a LCA is performed on both conventional 1 GW-scaled hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H)-based single junction and a-Si:H/microcrystalline-Si:H tandem cell solar PV manufacturing plants and such plants coupled to silane recycling plants. Using a recycling process that results in a silane loss of only 17 versus 85 percent, this results in a CED savings of 81,700 …

The impacts of the two-beam interference heating on the number of core-shell and embedded nanoparticles and on nanostructure coarsening are studied numerically based on the non-linear dynamical model for dewetting of the pulsed-laser irradiated, thin (< 20 nm) metallic bilayers. The model incorporates thermocapillary forces and disjoining pressures, and assumes dewetting from the optically transparent substrate atop of the reflective support layer, which results in the complicated dependence of light reflectivity and absorption on the thicknesses of the layers. Stabilizing thermocapillary effect is due to the local thickness-dependent, steady- state temperature profile in the liquid, which is derived based on the mean substrate temperature estimated from the elaborate thermal model of transient heating and melting/freezing. Linear stability analysis of the model equations set for Ag/Co bilayer predicts the dewetting length scales in the qualitative agreement with experiment.

Compared to the mish metal-based AB5 MH alloy commonly used in Ni/MH batteries, the transition metal-based AB2 MH alloy not only reduces the rare earth dependency, it also has higher specific energy. In order to further improve the performance of AB2 MH alloy, it's crucial to full understand its multi-phase nature, which includes the main C14/C15 Laves phases and the secondary non-Laves phases.

The advancing complexity of advanced microelectronic devices is placing rigorous demands on currently used PVD and CVD deposition techniques. The ALD deposition method is proposed to meet the film thickness and conformality constraints needed by the semiconductor industry in future manufacturing processes. Unfortunately, there is a limited number of chemical precursors available that have high thermal stability, reactivity, and vapor pressure suitable for ALD film growth to occur. Colloid self-assembly under external control is a new route to fabrication of advanced materials with novel microstructures and appealing functionalities. The kinetic processes of colloidal self-assembly have attracted great interests also because they are similar to many atomic level kinetic processes of materials. In the past decades, rapid technological progresses have been achieved on producing shape-anisotropic, patchy, core-shell structured particles and particles with electric/magnetic charges/dipoles, which greatly enriched the self-assembled structures.
