Multidentate Resorcinarene Surfactants For The Phase Transfer Of Metal Nanoparticles And Nanodiamonds: Applications In Catalysis And Diamond Film Growth, Vara Prasad Sheela

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

One main objective of the present work is to functionalize cuboctahedral platinum nanoparticles with various multidentate resorcinarene surfactants and study their influence in determining their catalytic activity. We hypothesized that catalytically active and recyclable catalysts can be achieved by incomplete yet strong passivation of the nanoparticle surfaces by using multidentate resorcinarene surfactants. We have developed phase transfer protocols for functionalizing cuboctahedral platinum nanoparticles with resorcinarene thiol or amine. Fluorescence assay confirmed that both these nanoparticles contained almost comparable unpassivated metal area. The activity of such phase transferred nanoparticles was tested in the catalytic hydrogenation of allyl alcohol. The conversion of …

Diamond This Film Patterning Technique Using Selective Nucleation Growth, Characterization And Application, Weican Xiao

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Diamond is the hardest bulk material with the highest thermal conductivity. It is also an excellent wide band gap material; hence, diamond is suitable for electronic, mechanical and biological applications. Unfortunately, natural diamond is prohibitively expensive for most technological applications. Polycrystalline diamond, with properties close to those of natural diamond, has been synthesized since the 1950s. Among many methods employed for diamond thin film synthesis, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using microwave plasma (MW) is quite popular for several reasons. Well-confined plasma that does not touch the reaction chamber walls can be produced directly on the substrate. Hence, contamination in the …

Numerical Analysis And Design Optimization Of Organic Bulk Hetero-Junction Solar Cells Using The Mixed Finite Element And Arc-Length Methods, James L. Dean

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the high coupling and non-linear nature of the semiconductor equations, numerical stability becomes a major problem when using a purely Newtonian numerical method in solving these equations. Presented is a robust mixed finite element formulation with application for organic solar cell devices that incorporates the arc-length predictor-corrector method to bypass such stability issues. The simulated device represents a multilayered solar cell using organic bulk hetero-junction materials including donor materials Poly[2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-diyl[4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4- b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl]] (PCPDTBT) and poly 3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with acceptor fullerene materials [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the photoactive …

Simple Analysis And Possible Solutions Of The Unusual Interfacial Reactions In Li-S Batteries, Xin-Ping Ai, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Rechargeable Li-S batteries are a promising power source with realizable energy densities several times higher than current Li-ion batteries. However, the capacity utilization and cycling stability of the existing Li-S technologies are still insufficient for battery applications. The causes for the electrochemical instability of this redox system arise probably from the changes in the surface structures and electrochemical microenvironments of the Li anode and sulfur cathode during charge-discharge reactions, which includes the frustrated electron transfer in the sulfur-carbon interface, the dissoluble diffusion of the polysulfide intermediates, and the shuttle reaction inbetween the sulfur and Li electrodes. To deal with these …

Methodological Significance Of "Property-Activity Relationship" For Catalyst Studies, Jun-Tao Lu, Li Xiao, De-Li Wang, Yu-Bao Sun, Yan-Ge Suo, Lin Zhuang Jun 2012

Methodological Significance Of "Property-Activity Relationship" For Catalyst Studies, Jun-Tao Lu, Li Xiao, De-Li Wang, Yu-Bao Sun, Yan-Ge Suo, Lin Zhuang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Instead of attempting the structure-activity relationship (SAR), which is commonly regarded as the core problem for catalyst studies, this paper highlights the methodological significance of “property-activity relationship (PAR)”. The “property” here refers to an index (such as the adsorption energy of an intermediate) or a group of indexes reflecting the behavior of a catalyst which interacts with reactants or intermediates, and is a bridge between structure and activity. Because property is related to activity more directly than structure to activity, PAR should be simpler, less difficult and, therefore, more feasible to be accessed than SAR. Once the key property is …

This study examines the creation of a nano-featured biosensor platform designed for the rapid and selective detection of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The foundation of this sensor is carbon nanotubes decorated with gold nanoparticles that are modified with a specific, surface adherent ribonucleiuc acid (RNA) sequence element. The multi-step sensor assembly was accomplished by growing carbon nanotubes on a graphite substrate, the direct synthesis of gold nanoparticles on the nanotube surface, and the attachment of thiolated RNA to the bound nanoparticles. The application of the compounded nano-materials for sensor development has the distinct advantage of retaining the electrical behavior …

Interfacial Friction Between Semiflexible Polymers And Crystalline Surfaces, Nikolai V. Priezjev Jun 2012

Interfacial Friction Between Semiflexible Polymers And Crystalline Surfaces, Nikolai V. Priezjev

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the friction at an interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive crystalline surfaces are reported. We consider a coarse-grained bead-spring model of linear chains with adjustable intrinsic stiffness. The structure and relaxation dynamics of polymer chains near interfaces are quantified by the radius of gyration and decay of the time autocorrelation function of the first normal mode. We found that the friction coefficient at small slip velocities exhibits a distinct maximum which appears due to shear-induced alignment of semiflexible chain segments in contact with solid walls. At large slip velocities, the friction …

Implementation And Optimization Of An Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy Setup, Ervin Gina Jun 2012

Implementation And Optimization Of An Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy Setup, Ervin Gina

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES) is utilized for determining the unoccupied electron states of materials. It is a complementary technique to the widely used photoemission spectroscopy (PES) as it analyzes what PES cannot, the states above the Fermi energy. This method is essential to investigating the structure of a solid and its states. IPES has a broad range of uses and is only recently being utilized.

This thesis describes the setup, calibration and operation of an IPES experiment. The IPES setup consists of an electron gun which emits electrons towards a sample, where photons are released, which are measured in isochromat …

An Exploratory Investigation Into How Cold Working Can Affect The Acoustic Performance Of Thin Aluminum Foil In A Ribbon Microphone, Alexander (Alex) Stanley

Materials Engineering

Ribbons of 4 μm thin 99.1% pure aluminum foil were cut and corrugated to replace the stock ribbon in an Apex 205 ribbon microphone. Prior to corrugation, half of the ribbons were sandwiched between two KimWipes and two pieces of cardstock then hammered to impart strain hardening. Each ribbon was placed into the microphone capsule and the frequency response of each ribbon was measured. A 10 second sine sweep from 20-20,000 Hz was played through a KRK Rokit 5 speaker and recorded through a ribbon microphone placed 6 inches away from the speaker cone. The signal generated by the ribbon …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Torsional Micro-Hinge Structures, Mike Madrid Marrujo Jun 2012

Fabrication And Characterization Of Torsional Micro-Hinge Structures, Mike Madrid Marrujo

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Fabrication and Characterization of Torsional Micro-Hinge Structures

Mike Marrujo

There are many electronic devices that operate on the micrometer-scale such as Digital Micro-Mirror Devices (DMD). Micro actuators are a common type of DMD that employ a diaphragm supported by torsional hinges, which deform during actuation and are critical for the devices to have high stability and reliability. The stress developed within the hinge during actuation controls how the actuator will respond to the actuating force. Electrostatically driven micro actuators observe to have a fully recoverable non-linear viscoelastic response. The device consists of a micro-hinge which is suspended by two …

The Effect Of Polarization And Ingan Quantum Well Shape In Multiple Quantum Well Light Emitting Diode Heterostructures, Patrick M. Mcbride Jun 2012

The Effect Of Polarization And Ingan Quantum Well Shape In Multiple Quantum Well Light Emitting Diode Heterostructures, Patrick M. Mcbride

Master's Theses

Previous research in InGaN/GaN light emitting diodes (LEDs) employing semi-classical drift-diffusion models has used reduced polarization constants without much physical explanantion. This paper investigates possible physical explanations for this effective polarization reduction in InGaN LEDs through the use of the simulation software SiLENSe. One major problem of current LED simulations is the assumption of perfectly discrete transitions between the quantum well (QW) and blocking layers when experiments have shown this to not be the case. The In concentration profile within InGaN multiple quantum well (MQW) devices shows much smoother and delayed transitions indicative of indium diffusion and drift during …

Master's Theses

Abbott Vascular encountered strength and variability issues when attempting to resistively weld 304 Stainless Steel to equiatomic Nitinol. Initial observations suggested that passivation layer (Cr2O3, TiO2) formation affected the weld interface. One hundred 304 Stainless Steel/Nitinol pairs were allowed to oxidize in air at room temperature for allowed periods of time (.1, 1, 3, 5, 7, 12, 16, 24, 168, and 336 hours). Each pair was welded resistively with constant current. A Miyachi/Unitek Advanced Data Analysis Monitor (ADAM) recorded the peak resistance at the instance the weld was made. Resistances were compared to Instron …

Deposition, Characterization, And Fabrication Of A Zinc Oxide Piezoelectric Thin Film Microspeaker Using Dc Reactive Sputtering, Adam Olzick

Master's Theses

A piezoelectric microspeaker device that could be used in a variety of acoustic applications was designed and fabricated using a thin film ZnO layer that was reactively DC sputtered onto a single crystalline n-type silicon substrate. When tested the microspeaker did not produce sound due to complications in the etching process, the thickness of the diaphragms, and clamping effects. Instead, a characterization approach was taken and the structural, optical, electrical, and piezoelectric properties of the ZnO were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy were utilized to discover the ZnO’s structural properties. Using the XRD and SEM, …

Challenges In Transdisciplinary, Integrated Projects: Reflections On The Case Of Faculty Members’ Failure To Collaborate, Linda Vanasupa, Kathryn E. Mccormick, Carolyn J. Stefanco, Roberta J. Herter, Margot Mcdonald

Materials Engineering

In this article we describe the challenges of transdisciplinary teamwork involving four faculty members from dissimilar epistemological traditions in the process of developing a manuscript on the lessons learned in our teaching collaboration. Our difficulty originated in implicit mental models and assumptions that caused incongruence between our intent to collaborate and the (habituated) relationship structure of the partnership. The dynamics are described through the lens of Tannenbaum and Schmidt’s leadership model and Aristotle’s causality. We suggest that successful collaboration necessitates careful attention to the process of establishing the collaboration, its structure, and the metacognitive capacities to see one’s own thinking, …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Gold And Silver Nanoparticles In Formal And Informal Settings, Mathew Wynn Jun 2012

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Gold And Silver Nanoparticles In Formal And Informal Settings, Mathew Wynn

Materials Engineering

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized through the reduction of AgNO3 using NaBH4. The borohydride anions were adsorbed onto silver nanoparticles. The repelling forces of the borohydride anions prevented the aggregation of particles, but the addition of an electrolyte or agitation induced aggregation. A yellow hue was given off by the silver nanoparticle sol that, using a spectrophotometer, had plasmon resonance at 386 nm. The silver nanoparticles were estimated to be 10 to 20 nm in diameter. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized through the reduction of HAuCl4 using Na3C6H5O7. The gold nanoparticle sol gave off a red hue that had plasmon resonance at …
