Preparation And Characterisation Of Stabilized Nafion/Phosphotungstic Acid Composite Membranes For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (Pemfc) Automobile Engines, Rohit Agarwal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Membrane durability is one of the limiting factors for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) commercialisation by limiting the lifetime of the membrane via electrochemical / mechanical / thermal degradation. Lower internal humidity in the membrane at high temperature ( > 100 °C) and low relative humidity (25-50 %RH) operating conditions leads to increased resistance, lowering of performance and higher degradation rate. One of the promising candidates is composite proton exchange membranes (CPEMs) which have heteropoly acid (HPA) e.g. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) doped throughout the Nafion® matrix. HPA is primarily responsible for carrying intrinsic water which reduces the external water dependence. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymer-Derived Porous Sicn Ceramics, Yun Wei
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis and characterization of porous SiCN ceramics produced by the method of polymer-derived ceramics were studied in this work. The polymer-to-ceramic conversion technique is a novel revolution in the methods for fabricating porous materials with controlled morphologies and tailored properties. The porous SiCN ceramics can be successfully prepared from thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors (polysilazane) and the pore former (polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)). The fabrication procedures involved the mixing of the pre-ceramic precursor with appropriate concentration of the PVA, curing, pyrolysis and subsequent PVA removal, leaving pores in the ceramic matrix. The material obtained revealed a homogeneous amorphous microstructure consisting …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bulk metallic glasses have interesting combination of physical, chemical, mechanical, and magnetic properties which make them attractive for a variety of applications. Consequently there has been a lot of interest in understanding the structure and properties of these materials. More varied applications can be sought if one understands the reasons for glass formation and the methods to control them. The glass-forming ability (GFA) of alloys can be substantially increased by a proper selection of alloying elements and the chemical composition of the alloy. High GFA will enable in obtaining large section thickness of amorphous alloys. Ability to produce glassy alloys …

Nonthermal Laser-Induced Formation Of Crystalline Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100), M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The effects of laser-induced electronic excitations on the self-assembly of Ge quantum dots on Si (100) - (2×1) grown by pulsed laser deposition are studied. Electronic excitations due to laser irradiation of the Si substrate and the Ge film during growth are shown to decrease the roughness of films grown at a substrate temperature of ∼120 °C. At this temperature, the grown films are nonepitaxial. Electronic excitation results in the formation of an epitaxial wetting layer and crystalline Ge quantum dots at ∼260 °C, a temperature at which no crystalline quantum dots form without excitation under the same deposition conditions. …

Modeling And Measurement Of Thermal Residual Stresses And Isotope Effects On Thermo Physical Properties Of Zrb₂-Sic Ceramics, Michael P. Teague
Masters Theses
"Commercially available finite element modeling software (ABAQUS) was used to investigate the internal residual stresses that develop as a result of cooling from processing temperatures in ZrB₂-SiC ceramics. The size and shape of the SiC particles were varied to evaluate their effect on the residual stresses. Results were compared to experimental data and showed similar trends, where increasing SiC particle size increased tensile stress and also decreased strength. Models were used to analyze benefits of novel shaped SiC inclusions and also better understand the short comings of the composites. An attempt to validate the models using neutron diffraction to measure …

Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Aluminum Alloys, Wei Yuan
Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Aluminum Alloys, Wei Yuan
Masters Theses
"Efforts to reduce vehicle weight and improve safety performance have resulted in increased application of light-weight aluminum alloys and a recent focus on the weldability of these alloys. Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid state welding technique (derivative from friction stir welding (FSW), which was developed as a novel method for joining aluminum alloys). During FSSW, the frictional heat generated at the tool-workpiece interface softens the surrounding material, and the rotating and moving pin causes material flow. The forging pressure and mixing of the plasticized material result in the formation of a solid bond region. The present work …

Synthesis Of Nanostructured Conducting Polymers And Their Application As Gas Sensors, Zhe-Fei Li
Masters Theses
"A single-step, bottom-up technique based on a nanostructured conducting polymer has been used to fabricate sensors. Small amounts of aqueous solutions of aniline, a dopant, and an oxidant were placed on an interdigitated electrode array. Ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation of the solutions enhanced polymerization, yielding a highly porous film of polyaniline nanofibers with mean diameters of around 100 nm and lengths on the order of 1 µm. Solutions that were not irradiated formed bulk-like polyaniline films. Nanofibers and bulk polyaniline sensors were exposed to vapors in an argon carrier gas including: chloroform, a weak proton donor; toluene, a vapor that causes polymer …

Thermal Characterization And Vibration Of Solder Alloys, Brandon Lee Brinkmeyer
Masters Theses
"Recent legislation and growing environmental concerns have forced the electronics industry to discontinue the use of tin-lead (SnPb) solder. Although the legislation did not directly affect aerospace and defense industries, future transitions to lead-free (LF) solders are inevitable. Differences exist between these high reliability systems and consumer electronics, first of which is a very small production rate and a long life cycle which often leads to repair or rework procedures which introduce the potential for mixing of SnPb and LF solder. In this study, Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) was mixed with Sn-37Pb solder in amounts of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 …

Elevated Temperature Behavior Of A Magnesium Based Bulk Metallic Glass, Neal C. Ross
Masters Theses
"Bulk metallic glasses are a new material set that possess interesting and exceptional engineering properties. Their study has been a major focus of research in metallurgy since the early 1990s, and recently their properties have led to application in specialized applications. Limitations including material cost, maximum attainable cast diameters, and high density have prevented the widespread use of these materials. In particular, the high density of most bulk metallic glasses has significantly reduced their appeal to the aerospace community. In an effort to overcome this, research is being performed on producing lower density glass forming systems based on magnesium and …

The nucleation and growth of indium on a vicinal Si (100) - (2×1) surface at high temperature by femtosecond pulsed laser deposition was investigated by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED). RHEED intensity relaxation was observed for the first ∼2 ML during the growth of In (4×3) by step flow. From the temperature dependence of the rate of relaxation, an activation energy of 1.4±0.2 eV of surface diffusion was determined. The results indicate that indium small clusters diffused to terrace step edges with a diffusion frequency constant of (1.0±0.1) × 1011 s-1. The RHEED specular …

We have fabricated single crystal-like BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films by flux-mediated epitaxy using pulsed laser deposition(PLD). The Bi–Cu–O flux composition and its thickness were optimized using composition spread, thickness gradient, and temperature gradient libraries. The optimized BFO thin films grown with this technique showed larger grain size of ∼2μm and higher dielectric constant in the range of 260–340 than those for standard PLD grown films. In addition, the leakage current density of the films was reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to that of standard PLD grown films.

A New Method Of Synthesizing Black Birnessite Nanoparticles: From Brown To Black Birnessite With Nanostructures, Shizhi Qian, Marcos A. Cheney, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Sang W. Joo, Wensheng Hou, Joseph M. Okoh
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
A new method for preparing black birnessite nanoparticles is introduced. The initial synthesis process resembles the classical McKenzie method of preparing brown birnessite except for slower cooling and closing the system from the ambient air. Subsequent process, including wet-aging at 7◦C for 48 hours, overnight freezing, and lyophilization, is shown to convert the brown birnessite into black birnessite with complex nanomorphology with folded sheets and spirals. Characterization of the product is performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 adsorption (BET) techniques. Wet-aging and lyophilization times are shown to …

Fundamental And Applied Experimental Investigations Of Corrosion Of Steel By Lbe Under Controlled Conditions: Kinetics, Chemistry Morphology, And Surface Preparation, John Farley, Allen L. Johnson
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
Advanced nuclear processes and facilities (e.g., transmutation of nuclear waste, fast reactors, and spallation neutron sources) impose special demands on materials, which must withstand high temperatures, high radiation fields, and chemical corrosion. Proposed schemes for transmuting nuclear waste require a nonmoderating coolant such as lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) or liquid sodium. While LBE corrodes most steels, small amounts of oxygen in the LBE greatly reduces the corrosion rate, and could ideally re-grow a damaged oxide layer in situ. The protective oxide layer would thus be self-healing. However, a fundamental understanding of the role of oxygen and passivating oxide layers is presently …
Effect Of Silicon Content On The Corrosion Resistance And Radiation-Induced Embrittlement Of Materials For Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems, Ajit K. Roy
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The beneficial effects of Si on both the metallurgical and corrosion properties of Cr-Mo steels have previously been demonstrated at UNLV. Therefore, additions of Si ranging from 0.5-2.0 weight percent (wt%) was attempted in this investigation to explore Si effect on both the high temperature tensile properties and corrosion behavior of T91 grade steel. Corrosion studies in the presence of molten LBE could not be performed due to a lack of proper experimental facilities at UNLV. Therefore, detailed corrosion studies involving Si-containing T91 grade steels were performed in an aggressive aqueous solution of acidic pH. Further, significant efforts have been …

Theoretical Modeling Of Protective Oxide Layer Growth In Non-Isothermal Lead Alloy Coolant Systems, Yitung Chen, Taide Tan, Jinsuo Zhang, Jichun Li
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
In advanced nuclear energy systems, lead alloys emerge as strong candidates for transmutation and advanced reactor systems as nuclear coolants and spallation neutron targets. However, it is widely recognized that corrosion of materials caused by lead alloys presents a critical barrier to their industrial use. A few experimental research and development projects have been set up by different groups such as at Los Alamos National Laboratory to study the corrosion phenomena in their test facilities and to develop mitigation techniques and materials. One of the central or main techniques under development is to use active control of oxygen thermodynamic activity …
Development Of Nanostructure Based Corrosion-Barrier Coatings On Steel For Transmutation Applications, Biswajit Das
Development Of Nanostructure Based Corrosion-Barrier Coatings On Steel For Transmutation Applications, Biswajit Das
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
Advanced transmutation systems require structural materials that are able to withstand high neutron fluxes, high thermal cycling, and high resistance to chemical corrosion. The current candidate materials for such structures are ferritic and ferritic-martensitic steels due to their strong resistance to swelling, good microstructural stability under irradiation, and the retention of adequate ductility at typical reactor operating temperatures.
In parallel, lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) has emerged as a potential spallation target material for efficient production of neutrons, as well as a coolant in the accelerator system. While LBE has excellent properties as a nuclear coolant, it is also highly corrosive to …
Final Report: Phase Stability And Segregation In Alloy 22 Base Metal And Weldments, Jeffrey Lacombe
Final Report: Phase Stability And Segregation In Alloy 22 Base Metal And Weldments, Jeffrey Lacombe
Publications (YM)
At the outset of this project, the design of the waste disposal containers relied heavily on encasement in a multi-layered container, featuring a corrosion barrier of Alloy 22, a Ni-Cr- Mo-W based alloy with excellent corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions. The fundamental concern from the perspective of the Yucca Mountain Project, however, was the inherent uncertainty in the (very) long-term stability of the base metal and welds. Should the properties of the selected materials change over the long service life of the waste packages, it was conceivable that the desired performance characteristics (such as corrosion resistance) would …

Modeling And Simulations Of Diphasic Composites For Development Of High Energy Density Dielectrics, Sandeep K. Patil
Modeling And Simulations Of Diphasic Composites For Development Of High Energy Density Dielectrics, Sandeep K. Patil
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research is focused on diphasic dielectric composites for high energy density storage applications in pulsed power and power distribution systems. Composite materials are particularly attractive because they can synergistically combine high permittivity with high breakdown strength of the individual phases. Energy density, which captures permittivity and dielectric breakdown strength as vital material parameters, dominates this research challenge. Avenues for increasing the effective permittivity and breakdown strength may be found by gaining fundamental understanding of the response of diphasic dielectrics to an applied electric field. Improved understanding of these characteristics will ultimately lead to dielectrics with increased energy storage densities. …
