Corrosion Behavior Of Zn-Ni Coatings Deposited By Electrolytic Plasma Processing, Giancarlo Rios

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In the current research project, three groups of Zn-Ni coatings of various Ni contents were deposited on comercial carbon steel by electrolytic plasma processing (EPP), a novel surface modification technique. The coating characteristics were studied along with their corrosion behavior in order to determine their potential as electroplated Cd coating replacements. The latter electroplated coatings are currently used in aerospace applications but are toxic and hazardous to humans and the environment. Coating surfaces and cross sections were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while compositional analysis was conducted by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Phase structure analysis was carried out by x-ray …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cobalt-Diamond-Like-Carbon (Co-Dlc) Nanocomposites, Gunjan Shebe

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In recent years, synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites has been receiving significant attention. These nanocomposites offer opportunities to develop active nanomaterials with various applications like magnetic data storage and biomedical applications. They can be designed to provide excellent magnetic properties. However, high saturation magnetization materials, such as Co are not biocompatible. Thus, designing nanocomposites with magnetic phase embedded in biocompatible protective shells is of immense interest. In this study, Co-DLC nanocomposites were synthesized using a hybrid CVD/PVD technique and different combination of processing parameters were used to vary the concentration of Co in the nanocomposites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed, that with …

Fabrication And Characeterization Of Granular Magnetic Gold Nanoparticles, Rishi Wadhwa

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In recent years, gold and magnetic nanoparticles have showed great potential in biomedical applications. Magnetic nanoparticles can be used in both in- vivo and in-vitro applications such as drug and gene delivery, hyperthermia treatment of cancer, MRI contrast enhancement, cell labeling and magnetic separation. Due to the surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR), gold nanoparticles strongly absorb and scatter visible and infrared light in resonance with SPR. They have been exploited for bioimaging and photothermal therapy applications. This is why different sizes and shapes of Au nanoparticles exhibit different colors. In this thesis, we are investigating a new type of nanoparticles, granular …

Probing And Tuning The Size, Morphology, Chemistry And Structure Of Nanoscale Cerium Oxide, Satyanarayana Kuchibhatla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cerium oxide (ceria)-based materials in the nanoscale regime are of significant fundamental and technological interest. Nanoceria in pure and doped forms has current and potential use in solid oxide fuel cells, catalysis, UV- screening, chemical mechanical planarization, oxygen sensors, and bio-medical applications. The characteristic feature of Ce to switch between the +3 and + 4 oxidation states renders oxygen buffering capability to ceria. The ease of this transformation was expected to be enhanced in the nanoceria. In most the practical scenarios, it is necessary to have a stable suspension of ceria nanoparticles (CNPs) over longer periods of time. However, the …

Articles

An industrially viable solution-based processing route using minimal amounts of solvent has been used to prepare bulk quantity nanopowders (average particle size 15.3 nm) for the fabrication of ZnO varistors. The xerogels, calcined powders and sintered materials were fully characterised. The preparation of varistors from nanopowders has been optimised by studying the effect of temperature on grain growth, densification and breakdown voltage. The varistors are prepared by sintering at 1050 C for 2 hours, a temperature that is significantly lower than that used in the current industrial process. Highly dense varistor discs prepared from the sintered material produce devices, with …

Preparation And Characterization Of (Gesbte)) Semiconductors For Phase-Change Optical Storage, Hessa Ali Humeid Al-Shamisi

Theses

In the last decade, the phase change optical recording based upon chalcogenide glasses has advanced remarkably at full-scale commercial applications in the form of rewritable compact disks (CD-RWs). The principle of phase-change optical recording is based on a thermally induced reversible transformation between amorphous and crystalline phases. The search for recording materials possessing fast crystallization rate and long data retention has been pursued. Research results have revealed that Ge-Sb-Te compounds exhibit fast crystallization, which has been explained in terms of their single-phase structure.

In the present work, electrical properties of Ge-Sb-Te thin films using Impedance Spectroscopy, Current-Voltage, and Capacitance-Voltage techniques …

The space exploration mission of NASA requires human and robotic presence for long duration beyond the low earth orbit (LEO), especially on Moon and Mars. Developing a human habitat or colony on these planets would require a diverse range of materials, whose applications would range from structural foundations, (human) life support, (electric) power generation to components for scientific instrumentations. A reasonable and cost-effective approach for fabricating the materials needed for establishing a self-sufficient human outpost would be to primarily use local (in situ) resources on these planets. Since ancient times, glass and ceramics have been playing a vital role on …

Ultra-thin polymer films attached to solid substrates (supported films) have attracted significant interest in recent years. Supported films are used in the design of advanced materials like photoresists, lubricants and other electronic devices. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of supported polymer films have also been of significant interest. The Tg has been shown to depend on the thickness of the polymer film on the surface and the inherent nature of the surface. The effect of end-grafting of a polymer chain to a surface, on the Tg of the polymer has been studied previously.1 Reports on the study of glass transition behaviors …

Damping Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen Jan 2008

Damping Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen

Articles

The damping property of magnetorheological (MR) elastomers is characterized by a modified dynamic mechanical-magnetic coupled analyzer. The influences of the external magnetic flux density, damping of the matrix, content of iron particles, dynamic strain and driving frequency on the damping properties of MR elastomers were investigated experimentally. The experimental results indicate that the damping properties of MR elastomers greatly depend on the interfacial slipping between the inner particles and the matrix. Different from general composite materials, the interfacial slipping in MR elastomers is affected by the external applied magnetic field.

Design Issues For Therapeutic Ultrasound Angioplasty Waveguides, Declan Noone, Graham Gavin, Garrett Mcguinness

Conference Papers

Therapeutic ultrasound angioplasty is a new minimally invasive cardiovascular procedure for disrupting atherosclerotic lesions. Mechanical energy is transmitted in the form of ultrasound waves via long, flexible wire waveguides navigated to the lesion site through the vascular system. The underpinning principle of this technology is that plaque may be disrupted through a combination of direct contact ablation, pressure waves, cavitation and acoustic streaming, which all depend on the amplitude and frequency of displacements at the distal tip of the wire waveguide. This study identifies a number of key design issues for clinical devices of this type, and describes testing procedures …

Anomalous Magnetic Ordering In Prba₂Cu₄O₈ And Cmba₂Cu₃O₇, H. A. Blackstead, M. P. Smylie, William B. Yelon, Qingsheng Cai, Mehmet Kahveci Jan 2008

Anomalous Magnetic Ordering In Prba₂Cu₄O₈ And Cmba₂Cu₃O₇, H. A. Blackstead, M. P. Smylie, William B. Yelon, Qingsheng Cai, Mehmet Kahveci

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A review of temperature-dependent magnetization data for nonsuperconducting PrBa2Cu4O8 and CmBa2Cu3O7 suggests that the failure of each to superconduct is related to the presence of Pr and Cm on their respective Ba sites. This defect is manifested, in each case, by short c-axis lattice parameters and anomalous high-temperature magnetic ordering which has been incorrectly attributed to ordering of the entire magnetic sublattice. Instead, it is shown that the anomalous high-temperature ordering as seen in the magnetization data is consistent with the ordering of magnetic ions substituted on the Ba site.

Thermal Analysis Of Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate) On Silica, Boonta Hetayothin, Frank D. Blum Jan 2008

Thermal Analysis Of Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate) On Silica, Boonta Hetayothin, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The physical properties of polymers at interfaces can be quite different from those in bulk due to the interaction between the absorbed polymer and the surface. This phenomenon can be probed through the dynamic behavior of the polymer chains at the interface which can be experimentally probed by techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR),1 viscoelasticity, and calorimetry. At the polymer-air interface, polymer chains have more flexibility than those at the polymer-substrate interface. On the other hand, at the silica-polymer interface, where chains are more restricted on the surface, a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) results as compared with …

Effect Of Carbon Nanofiber-Matrix Adhesion On Polymeric Nanocomposite Properties—Part Ii, Khalid Lafdi, William Fox, Matthew Matzek, Emel Yildiz

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

A successful integration of two independent phases with good adhesion is imperative for effective translation of superior carbon nanofiber filler properties into a physically superior carbon nanocomposite. Carbon nanofibers were subjected to electrochemical oxidation in 0.1 M nitric acid for varying times.

The strength of adhesion between the nanofiber and an epoxy matrix was characterized by flexural strength and modulus. The surface functional groups formed and their concentration of nanofibers showed a dependence on the degree of oxidation. The addition of chemical functional groups on the nanofiber surface allows them to physically and chemically adhere to the continuous resin matrix. …

Carbon Nanoadditives To Enhance Latent Energy Storage Of Phase Change Materials, Shadab Shaikh, Khalid Lafdi, Kevin P. Hallinan

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Latent energy storage capacity was analyzed for a system consisting of carbon nanoparticlesdopedphase changematerials (PCMs). Three types of samples were prepared by doping shell wax with single wall carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs), multiwall CNTs, and carbon nanofibers. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the latent heat of fusion. The measured values of latent heat for all the samples showed a good enhancement over the latent heat of pure wax. A maximum enhancement of approximately 13% was observed for the wax/SWCNT composite corresponding to 1% loading of SWCNT. The change in latent heat was modeled by using an approximation for the intermolecular …

Effects Of Internal Oxidation On Thermo-Mechanical Properties Of Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed Conicraly Coatings, Travis Patterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) with MCrAlY (M=Co and/or Ni) bond coats have been widely used in hot sections of gas turbines to protect underlying superalloys from high temperatures, oxidation, and hot corrosion. Deposition of MCrAlY bond coats using atmospheric plasma spray (APS), as oppose to conventionally employed vacuum/low-pressure plasma spray and high velocity oxy-fuel deposition, allows greater flexibility in ability to coat economically and rapidly for parts with complex geometry including internal surfaces. There were three objectives of this study. First, relationships between APS spray parameters and coating microstructure was examined to determine optimum spray parameters to deposit APS CoNiCrAlY …

Molecular motion of polymer chains is an important determinant in understanding the physical properties of polymeric materials. Glass transition temperature (Tg) is a physical property of polymers, which is of primary interest. The study of the dynamics of polymer segments assists in understanding the dependence of Tg on polymer structure.1 For decades, studies have addressed the molecular motion in various polymers. Some of them have probed the dynamics of polymer backbones.2,3 the properties of a polymer at an interface may change because of the type of polymer, the substrate, or other variables. The side chain of a polymer can also …

Dynamics Of Adsorbed Pma-D₃ - Effect Of Substrate, Frank D. Blum, Burak Metin, Macduff O. Okuom

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the last few years, our group has focused much of our attention on studying the dynamics of polymers adsorbed at interfaces. Much of our work, to date has been on labeled poly(vinyl acetate)-d3 (PVAc-d3)1 and poly(methyl acrylate)-d3 (PMA-d3)2 on silica. We have been able to probe the effects of adsorbed amount,3 molecular mass,4,5 and the effect of overlayer.6 These studies have provided a view of the adsorbed polymer consistent with a motional gradient in the layer with the more mobile segments being those at the air-polymer interface and the less-mobile segments at the substratepolymer interface. However, we have not …

Quantitative Thickness Mapping In High-Angle Annular Dark-Field (Haadf) Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (Stem), Haritha Nukala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Only a few methods are currently available for the measurement of sample thicknesses in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). These methods, Convergent-Beam Electron Diffraction (CBED) and thickness mapping in Energy-Filtered TEM (EFTEM), are either elaborate or complex. In this present work, I have investigated and come up with a simple straight-forward method to measure the local thickness of a TEM sample with the atomic number (Z-contrast) imaging using High-Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). HAADF STEM shows atomic number contrast for high scattering angles of the electrons, owing to predominant electron scattering at the potential of the …

Production Of Bulk Ceramic Shapes From Polymer Derived Ceramics, Arnold Hill Jan 2008

Production Of Bulk Ceramic Shapes From Polymer Derived Ceramics, Arnold Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A method has been developed to produce bulk ceramic components from a class of ceramics known as polymer derived ceramics. In the past polymer derived ceramics have been limited to thin film applications or in the fabrication of MEMS devices. The reason being that when the polymer is into a ceramic, large quantities of gas are generated which produce internal pressure that fractures the ceramic components. The method developed here solves that issue by casting into the polymer a 3 dimensional network of polymer fibers in the form of a foam which, during pyrolysis, burns out and leaves a network …
